What’s in a Name?

Here is an explanation of how my state got its name.

The name California comes from Spanish conquistadors. It was named after Califia, which was a

mythical island paradise that was described in a Spanish romance written around the year 1510

titled Las Serges de Esplandian.

This is the nickname that my state has been given.

The Golden State

Here is an explanation of how my state got its nickname.

California was officially given the nickname “The Golden State” in 1968. It was given this

nickname for several reasons including the beautiful golden poppies that grow throughout the

state in the spring, the Golden Gate Bridge, the golden California sunsets, and the discovery of

gold in California’s early history.
