1 Introduction

This kit provides you with information about a Recognition process. Recognition is the process by which you can receive a nationally recognised qualification.

To be awarded a qualification you need to:

Submit evidence of your skills and knowledge Perform work under supervision Answer some knowledge questions

2 Glossary

The following is a list of the main words commonly used in training and assessment.

ASSESSMENT The process of collecting evidence and evaluation of your skills, experience and knowledge against the standards required in the workplace

ASSESSOR Trained accredited assessors who are employed in a Registered Training Organisation

CANDIDATE Applicant for Recognition

CERTIFICATE Record of qualification

COMPETENCY Ability to apply skills and knowledge in the workplace

EVIDENCE Proof of your skills, experience and knowledge. For example licences, supervisor’s report, etc.

PATHWAYS Options to complete a qualification through Recognition or training

RECOGNITIONThe process for formally assessing and recognising competencies, skills and knowledge

RTO Registered Training Organisation accredited to conduct training and assessments

TESTIMONIAL A signed statement about your work from a supervisor or employer

TRAINING PACKAGE A set of national standards, guidelines and qualifications for industry areas used for assessment

UNITS OF COMPETENCY

Specific knowledge and skills required to meet the workplace and industry standards. Units of competencies make up qualifications. A unit is the smallest set of skills that can be assessed.

3 Recognition3.1 Why do I need Certificate III in Steel Fixing? Certificate II is fast becoming the construction industry benchmark for competency.

Certificate III

Who would need this? Certificate III is trade level.

It would suit those people who: have worked as a rigger for a long time want to fast track into other qualifications need little or no supervision

What would be the outcome? Full Qualification at trade level – Certificate III in Steel Fixing

A Certificate III in Steel Fixing is a nationally recognised qualification. It is issued by Registered Training Organisations such as TAFE.

A licence is a state based permit recognised nationally. You need to apply to a state agency such as NSW WorkCover Authority to get a licence.

Differences between a qualification and a licence

3.2 Can I apply for Recognition?You should apply if you believe that you have got sufficient experience and can prove it through both documentary evidence and a practical activity. Ideally you would:

hold a licence have been working as a rigger for at least 3 years or have experience in the full range

of Steel Fixing activities be prepared to work with an experienced assessor to generate evidence

3.3 What are some of the skills and knowledge required to obtain Certificate II in Steel Fixing?

7 AppealAn appeal is a disagreement you have with a decision made about you. If you are not satisfied with a Recognition decision, you can appeal it.

When you appeal against a Recognition decision, you will be able to:

Present your case Have the Recognition decision reviewed within a reasonable time Receive the results of the review in writing Discuss options and select an option or options which best suit your needs and

circumstances

8 Evidence8.1 Definition of evidenceEvidence refers to the things you can collect to show you can perform the skills required to get a qualification.

Reliable and valid evidence is: Current (within the last 5 years) Authentic (refers to work performed by you presented on a document which is signed

and dated ) Valid (reflects your current ability to perform a task) Sufficient (enough evidence to ensure that you satisfy all aspects of the qualification)

Your assessor will plan with you what kinds of evidence you can produce to demonstrate your skills and knowledge such as work reports, observations and answer to questions.
