Gareth Malone Goes to GlyndebourneSunday,21 August 2011

UK Choirmaster Gareth Malone has been given the task of finding 50 teenagers from across East Sussex, to sing on the main stage of one of the world's most prestigious opera houses, Glyndebourne.

In the second programme Gareth has his chorus of 50 teens. To prepare them for their time at Glyndebourne, Gareth takes his chorus to the Royal Opera House to see Puccini's La Boheme. Many know absolutely nothing about opera - it's an inspiring experience.

Gareth has only six weeks of music rehearsals to teach his chorus the music and get them singing to Glyndebourne's high standards. But the music is hard. Gareth begins individual tuition with 18-year-old Stefan, the one male reserve. Stefan is fully committed and Gareth wants to see him on stage at the end, but is his singing strong enough?

Two weeks in, rehearsals move onto the set. But the chorus aren't ready and miss their cues. Worried his conducting may be to blame, Gareth has a lesson from conductor Nicholas Collon.

Like Stefan, 15-year-old Kiya lacks confidence with her singing, and Gareth gives her individual tuition. As the pressure increases, the boys start to lose interest - they mess around, some skive and a few leave. 16-year-old Korrel is one of the boys playing truant. Gareth tries to keep him on board as his attendance worsens. Can he keep him in the show?

Everest - Shooting the ImpossibleSunday,21 August 2011

Just climbing Mount Everest is hard enough - how do you make a film at the same time?

This nail-biting special goes behind the scenes of the critically-acclaimed feature length documentary, The Wildest Dream - Conquest Of Everest (Sunday, August 21st at 8.30pm on ABC1).

The Wildest Dream follows renowned mountaineer Conrad Anker as he retraces British explorer George Mallory's final attempt in 1924 to be the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

But how do you shoot a drama documentary on Everest? It is one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth and nearly one in 14 people who attempt the summit die on the mountain.

Everest: Shooting the Impossible follows Conrad Anker's nail-biting ascent up the North East Ridge with a 30-strong team specially selected for their filmmaking and climbing skills.

As the team climbs to the 29,029 foot (8,848 metre) summit they must keep filming all the way but their attempt on Everest makes huge demands on the climbers. They have to spend significant amounts of time in the 'death zone', the area above 26,000 feet where, cell by cell, the body begins to die.

Soon altitude sickness forces some to leave the mountain and weather conditions cause equipment failure. Emotions fray as they venture into areas riven with crevasses, to shoot key sequences.

As the monsoon season approaches, high winds and heavy snowfall threaten to disrupt Anker’s plans to climb the notorious Second Step, reach the summit, and get back down the mountain alive!

Jack Dee: Live In LondonMonday,22 August 2011

All the sarcastic magic of one of Britain's best comedians is captured in this outrageously funny live performance.

Known for his sardonic and grumpy persona, award-winning comedian Jack Dee has enjoyed a phenomenally successful worldwide career, delighting audiences at high-profile venues since the 1990s.

Having completed 70 live dates around the UK playing to 100,000 people, Jack Dee's Live and Uncut tour in 1998 culminated in a sell-out, six-week run at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End.

This show captures all the excitement of the side-splittingly funny final night, as Jack captivates the audience with his observational humour delivered in his trademark deadpan style.

Jack is clearly in his element as he throws harsh words at hecklers and has the crowd howling in recognition with his unique take on the imitations of everyday life.

He might be keeping a straight face, but the audience just can't stop laughing!

Except Valemont has a secret. A dangerous one.

Our eyes into this mysterious world of privilege and power belong to Sophie Fields (Kristen Hager).

She assumed another student's identity and enrolled in the college herself, intent on discovering exactly what happened to the brother she hadn't seen for years - and who murdered him.

Through a series of text and video messages on Eric's phone, Sophie pieces together the mystery that was her brother's life at Valemont...and discovers that his fate may soon be her own.

In a last ditch effort to get to the truth Gabriel (Tyler Hynes) attempts to force Sophie to change into a vampire with a vial of garlic water but his plan goes awry when something shows up and...

07:30PM New Series

Mega Builders: Spanning The HarlemWednesday,24 August 2011

The biggest. The most complex. The most stressful. The most dangerous ... This new series follows mega-builds that are making history and the people who are making them happen.

Watch a mission to turn a plane into a jet car; find out how they quake-proof the San Fransisco bridge or create the largest man-made island.

In the first episode, Spanning the Harlem, the Big Apple is getting its first new swinging bridge in a century. It's taking a team of mega-builders to pull off the 140 million dollar job.

They will use a 288-wheel extreme machine, called 'The Transporter' to lift the massive bridge span off the ocean barge that carried it to New York from Alabama where it was built.

"We could drop this baby in the ocean. No one knows what could happen," says the man in charge, Lou Manilowski as he tackles the most expensive project of his career.

Viewers get up close and personal across each step of the tense and dangerous work to build the New York Bridge.

From swinging the bridge off the barge, to building the massive foundation mid-stream before harnessing the tides of the Harlem River to float the bridge span into its final position, this is extreme engineering.

New Yorkers gasp as the three million pound steel bridge span balances on a barge and floats past Manhattan. Brawn, brains and tempers are tested to their limit with only five months to complete this feat.

Beauty and the Beast: The Ugly Face Of Prejudice: Michael And LauraWednesday,24 August 2011

Michael Boateng is a 21-year-old student at Liverpool University, studying Psychology and English Literature.

Michael has a facial disfigurement as the result of an accident when he was eight months old. He was sleeping on his mother's bed and rolled off, becoming trapped against hot water pipes and sustaining severe burns to his head. The burns resulted in him eventually losing an ear and undergoing four skin graft operations and the need for a prosthetic ear.

When Michael was about 11 years old he says he became very angry with the world and his grades started to drop off, so his Mum decided to put him in touch with the charity Changing Faces. Michael speaks very highly of Changing Faces - he feels it did him a great deal of good to meet other people with facial disfigurements. He is now on the Young Person's Council for the charity and acts as an ambassador.

Laura Summers is a 25-year-old model, occasional TV personality and PR girl from Manchester.

Laura regularly spends £2000 a month on personal trainers and cosmetic treatments, such as fake nails and eyelashes, spray tans, sunbeds, real hair extensions, teeth whitening, laser hair removal, tanning injections, facials and body scrubs to name just a few. She says she'd rather get in to debt than let herself go; she has gone without food in the past, in order to be able to afford treatments. The most she's ever spent in a single month was £6000 on cosmetic work alone.

Robert Blecker Wants Me DeadWednesday,24 August 2011

Robert Blecker Wants Me Dead, the engrossing and often disturbing documentary that looks inside the puzzling and unlikely friendship between Robert Blecker, one of America's most impassioned crusaders for capital punishment, and Daryl Holton, a mass murderer awaiting execution on Tennessee's death row.

Blecker, a professor at New York Law School, shares some startling common ground with Holton: both believe that the death penalty is a just and necessary punishment. For a year and a half - by phone, mail and even the occasional visit - the condemned man who wants to die and the scholar who believes he should, warily spar with one another through a series of death-watches, postponements and court-ordered stays. As the clock ticks down towards the day when Holton will walk to the electric chair, they explore together the meaning of mercy, courage, and the morality of the death penalty.

The resulting portrait is funny, disturbing and vital: Robert Blecker Wants Me Dead is a penetrating personal look at one of the most compelling and confounding moral questions of our time.
