Chris Humfrey's Wild LifeSunday,8 May 2011

Meet Chris Humfrey, a zoologist who lives with his young family and their really big dog in an idyllic bush haven in country Victoria. But the Humfreys also share their home with a few other pets - more than 2000 and each one of them needs care and attention 24/7. This isn't your average family home. It's a private zoo where human and animal sagas unfold on a daily basis. Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of Chris Humfrey's Wild Life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo.

Last week, Chris and Nicole auditioned two new presenters to join their team. But before they are allowed out to do shows at schools, Chris needs to ensure they are up to scratch in their animal handling skills. So he has designed some challenges involving some of the zoo's more dangerous animals. Meanwhile, in inner city Melbourne, Adam is about to put all his training to good use. One of the snakes he keeps at home has escaped and he needs to find it - fast. After three weeks of intensive training, Chris considers new recruit Laura is skilled enough in handling wild animals to keep some at home. So it's time to move in the tanks and enclosures for her new animal friends - ready for her first ever Wild Action show. Chris, always keen to spread the word about endangered Australian native animals, is off to appear on a morning TV chat show. But with wild animals on live television - anything can happen.

Human Planet: Cities: Surviving The Urban JungleSunday,8 May 2011 Final

The final episode of Human Planet looks at the environment which has been made by humans for humans. Cities are our greatest success story and now over half the world's population lives in the urban jungle. They are built to keep untamed nature out, but nature cannot be pushed away. From bed bugs sucking our blood at night, to rats in our restaurants, gangs of monkey muggers and rutting elks in downtown USA, many animals have adapted to living in a world of bricks and steel.

Not all urban animals are seen as pests. In the ancient city of Fez in Morocco the leather tanneries depend on poo from wild pigeons. Even futuristic Dubai would falter without falcons. In the suburbs of Jaipur we meet a Bisnoi woman who breastfeeds an orphaned fawn. On Manhatten's rooftops we join city slicker beekeepers. And on a much larger scale people are starting to realise that nature is key to the continued success of humanity. As consumption in our cities increases, so does the need to protect the natural world with its finite resources. In Masdar in Abu Dhabi, British architect Sir Norman Foster is helping create a carbon neutral future city. The human planet is starting to realise that the city is the place where we need nature most.

Moby DickSunday,8 May 2011 New Mini Series

Nantucket. The little island off the east coast of the United States is the capital of American whaling in 1850. Sailors, traders, harpooners - they all hope to make big money on land or on a whaler - and if not, then at least to have big adventures. One of them is Ishmael (Charlie Cox), who wanders through the bustling harbour in search of a whaling boat that will take him out to sea. Together with the homeless boy Pip (Daniel Gordon) and the fear-inspiring Polynesian harpooner Queequeg (Raoul Trujillo), he signs on as a crew member of the Pequod.

The commander of the whale boat is the charismatic, some would say despotic, Captain Ahab (William Hurt), an experienced seaman and whale hunter who lost his leg several years earlier in a struggle with the gigantic white sperm whale Moby Dick. Now he is obsessed with taking revenge on the legendary creature. Neither his long-suffering wife (Gillian Anderson) nor his crew suspect the true extent of his obsessive thirst for vengeance. Only Starbuck (Ethan Hawke), the First Mate of the Pequod, a very religious and level-headed man, fears that this journey will not be a regular whale-catching expedition…

On deck, Ahab finally tells his crew what the real goal of their voyage is: the death of Moby Dick. Ishmael, who is now friends with the harpooner Queequeg, is fascinated by his captain's charisma, willpower and determination. He casts Queequeg's dark premonitions to the winds.

Artscape: Man On The MoveTuesday,10 May 2011

Chunky Move has been a giant on the Australian contemporary dance landscape since 1995. Artscape: Man On The Move, tracks the 16-year history of this seminal Melbourne-based dance company through the eyes of its founder, and outgoing Artistic Director, Gideon Obarzanek. The program follows Obarzanek and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations of two major new works, Connected and Faker.

Connected teams five dancers with a suspended kinetic sculpture by Californian artist Reuben Margolin. Like past Chunky Move performances Glow and Mortal Engine, Connected is a visually unique work that marries dance and technology. In Connected the dancers are seen building their performance at the same time as they construct a large wave-like kinetic sculpture which attaches to their bodies with multiple strings.

Faker by comparison is a self-reflective solo work performed by Obarzanek himself. His first performance in 15 years, it's also the first solo work he has ever choreographed. Inspired by a real workshop that Obarzanek had with a young female dancer, Faker is essentially a show-about-a-show that never happened. It's a work that explores doubt, tension, exploitation, notions of expertise and the failed expectations of the choreographic process.

It's a compelling departing gesture from a man who has premiered over 25 new dance productions, and who has nurtured Chunky Move to become one of Australia's most successful contemporary dance exports.

Angry BoysWednesday,11 May 2011 New Series

The world premiere of the highly-anticipated 12-part comedy series Angry Boys, starts Wednesday 11 May, 9pm on ABC1. The chameleon of character invention, writer/performer Chris Lilley brings to life six vastly different characters, but they all have one thing in common - they will entertain and intrigue, as their private worlds are revealed.

Still living on the family farm in Dunt, identical twins Daniel and Nathan Sims, who appeared in We Can Be Heroes, are back. Joining the boys in the series are four new characters; former surfing world champion Blake Oakfield, a family man and founding member of a surfie gang - the Mucca Mad Boys; S.mouse a U.S. rapper famous for having produced the biggest selling hip-hop single of all time; Japanese mother Jen Okazaki, a shrewd businesswoman, she also manages her son's skateboarding career; and Juvenile Justice Centre for Boys officer Ruth Sims, aka Gran. Gran takes pride in looking after the 'worst boys in the state' and can be as tough on the boys as she is kind to them.

The series kicks off in Dunt, South Australia, home to identical twins Daniel and his 90 percent deaf brother Nathan. They dam surf, they skate, they do 'mainees' in the street in their mother's hotted up Nissan Pulsar. In their bedroom are the 'Wall of Legends', pictures of the people they consider their heroes - surfer Blake Oakfield, Japanese skater Tim Okazaki, U.S. rapper S.mouse, bikini model Emily Chase, their late dad and their prison officer grandmother, 'Gran'. Gran lives and works at Garingal Juvenile Justice Centre for Boys together with her co-worker Penny. In her spare time, Gran cares for her 23 guinea pigs and makes superhero pyjamas for the young inmates.

Angry Boys will be repeated on ABC2 – Tuesday, May 17 at 10:30pm

Machete Maidens Unleashed!Thursday,12 May 2011

Karate-kickin' midgets! Papier-mâché monsters! Busty babes with blades! Filipino genre films of the '70s and '80s had it all. Boasting cheap labour, exotic scenery and non-existent health and safety regulations, the Philippines was a dreamland for exploitation filmmakers whose renegade productions were soon engulfing drive-in screens around the globe like a tidal schlock-wave!

Now, the all-too-often overlooked world of the drive-in filler from Manila gets the Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood) treatment. This is the ultimate insiders' account of a faraway back lot where stunt men came cheap, plot was obsolete and the make-up guy was packin' heat!

Machete Maidens Unleashed! features interviews with cult movie icons Roger Corman, Joe Dante, John Landis, Sid Haig, Eddie Romero, Australian Brian Trenchard-Smith and a large assembly of cast, crew and critics, each with a jaw-dropping story to tell about filmmaking with no budget, no scruples, no boundaries and - more often than not - no clothes.

Strap yourselves in for a non-stop Filipino femme-fest, all the way from the jungles of the Pacific via the trash cans of the critics!

A Quiet Word With Catherine TateSaturday,14 May 2011

In A Quiet Word With Catherine Tate, comedian Tony Martin leads the British comic actress on a merry dance through her award-winning career, from her early work on The Bill - accurately recreated here - to her massively successful three seasons of The Catherine Tate Show and popular tenure as the Doctor's assistant on Doctor Who.

Tate reveals what it's like to shoot a comedy scene with the Prime Minister, what it's like to hurl abuse at the Queen on national television, and what it's like to break the record for most uses of the F-word in a single sketch. Martin excavates the origins of her most famous characters, finds out how Tate got a new word into the Oxford dictionary, and baffles her with a reference to a TV show she can't recall making, in this loose and entertaining Quiet Word.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors is out on the farm tonight, checking out the latest innovations to help our farmers put food on our tables. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, agricultural scientist Chris Russell, and Rural Woman of the Year 2010 Sue Middleton.

Inventions featured on the program:

COCONUT PRESS - by inventor Dr Dan Maxwell Etherington from NSW

Dan was born in Kenya in 1936 where his parents were farmers. He has studied and worked in Kenya, the UK, South Africa, the USA, and Australia. In 1992 a village soap maker in Mozambique appealed to a visiting consultancy team to come up with a method of producing oil directly from his community's coconuts. As the team leader, Dan could not forget the plea. If such a technology existed or could be developed, it could radically transform the lives of poverty-stricken coconut farmers around the world.

The coconut press allows villagers to make virgin coconut oil in significant quantities within their own farm or village within one hour of opening a coconut. The process involves grating the mature coconut flesh, drying this shredded coconut to specific moisture content and then expelling the oil with the Coconut Press. The oil is filtered by racking and sedimentation.

ROSDI - by inventors Greg Leslie and Bruce Sutton from NSW

The Rosdi project began with a simple research question: ‘If a reverse osmosis membrane could be incorporated into a drip irrigation line, would the suction in the root zone of a plant provide sufficient energy to extract water for plant growth while preventing the movement of salt into the soil?’ Child's stuff really, but Associate Professor Greg Leslie and Honorary Professor Bruce Sutton decided to have a look at it anyway.

The Rosdi irrigation system lets plants draw water through salt filters in irrigation pipes at their roots, using the tiny amounts of energy naturally created by evaporation at their leaves. The system is able to determine if there is enough suction energy created at the roots of plants by natural evaporation to draw the water through a reverse osmosis filter.

MOISTURE MANAGER – by inventors Ross Hubbard and Richard Sulman from SA

Many years ago Ross started asking farmers what they wanted in a multi-purpose machine. Farmers love machines, and the wish list was very long! But most importantly, they wanted a stump-jump mechanism incorporated into the parallelogram design. Undeterred when engineers told him that such an idea was impossible, Ross teamed up with Richard and got to work.

The Moisture Manager is a highly flexible, multipurpose planter that is designed to cope with a huge range of soil types and weather conditions. It incorporates both a hydraulically operated parallelogram planter, and a built in ‘stump-jump’ device that allows the invention to be used as a traditional field cultivator as well as a parallelogram planter, a world first.

Emily has only recently started working for the owners of Green Lanterns - the famous mystery author Hugo Doré (Paul McGann) and his wife, Harriet (Sasha Behar). But her new role comes with a house that has its own fair share of history and mystery…

As Creek and Joey investigate, things take a turn for the worse when a piercing scream is heard in the garden and Harriet is seen falling from a window. But who pushed her and why? When Emily is arrested, she swears she didn't commit the murder.

With Emily on trial, Creek and Joey race against time to try and prove her innocence, uncover the mystery behind the murder and find the real culprit.

Using his powers of deduction and belief that nothing is as it seems, Creek uncovers a number of intriguing clues which lead him to the unbelievable truth and the revealing of one of the greatest acts of illusion he has encountered yet.

A deftly-written and witty script with plenty of twists and turns makes this feature-length drama certain to delight fans and newcomers alike.
