Home learning for Year 3

Week Beginning: 08/06/2020

Spelling:This week you will be looking at the Year 3 WOW words. These are words that can be really tricky to spell, but the government want you to know them! Please click on the link below to complete at least three games to help you practise some of these words.

https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/74/36-Random-selection-of-12-words-taken-from-years-3-and-4-word-list

Challenge: Are there a few words that you found really tricky in the game or kept forgetting how to spell them? Please use the Queensway spelling sheet and choose one of the activities to help you practise the spellings. Why don’t you really challenge yourself and choose an activity from the sheet that you haven’t chosen before!

Grammar:This week in grammar we would like you to focus on pronouns. Please click on the link below and follow the guided lesson. There are multiple videos to explain pronouns to you and then there are three activities for you to complete.

Remember that you can use this grammar lesson to help with your writing!

Reading:This week we would like you to focus on your inference skills. It is really important to look at illustrations when reading a book and think about what the illustrations tell the reader, without using words. Please look at the picture below and answer the following questions. Mr Grant and I have recorded a short video on our YouTube channel where we are modelling answering a few of the questions below to show you the detail we are looking for.

Magic Carpet

Page 2: misspenniston.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewIf you would like to practise your inference skills even further, grab a book from home, maybe the one you are currently reading and

1. How does this picture make you feel? Why?2. How do you think the boy is feeling? 3. Do you think the dog is feeling a different emotion to the boy? Why?4. What do you think the boy is thinking?5. What is happening in the picture? 6. What do you think is about to happen? Why?7. What does his bedroom tell you about him as a character? 8. What does the title tell you about the story?

Challenge: If you would like to practise your inference skills even further, grab a book from home, maybe the one you are currently reading and discuss the illustrations with your adult.

Here are some questions to help you:1. What is happening in the picture? How do you know?2. How does the setting/ character feel?3. Why do you think…?4. What does the colour show about the atmosphere?5. How do you think … is feeling? How do you know?6. What do you think happened just before or just after this photo? 7. How can you tell … is feeling …?8. Does the title tell you anything about the story?

English:This week we will be focusing on adventure and mystery stories. These stories often have a magical aspect and include lots of adventure. This week we are going to be focusing on… Peter Pan!

Task 1: Please find an overview of Peter Pan on our class blogs. It would be a

Page 3: misspenniston.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewIf you would like to practise your inference skills even further, grab a book from home, maybe the one you are currently reading and

good idea to familiarise yourselves with the story. However, this is a very basic overview and lacks the detail that your stories will include.

After reading the story of Peter Pan talk through your own adventure story idea with an adult. Please think about the following questions:

1. Who is your main character? What is special about them?2. Is there just one main character?3. Where is your story set? Does the setting change throughout your story? 4. What is the main adventure to the story?5. What is magical about your story?6. Which parts of Peter Pan will you innovate?7. Which parts of Peter Pan will you keep the same?

Task 2: Who remembers creating story mountains in year 3? It’s now time for you to put your own ideas into a story mountain. Please watch the YouTube video where Mr Grant is modelling breaking up his story into a story mountain. After watching the modelled story mountain video, it is over to you! Make sure you think about each stage of your adventure story.

Task 3: Now that you have planned your story and thought in detail about your adventure and characters, it’s time to get writing! This week, we would like you to write only the opening to the story.

Please use the model below to help. Remember, you could always magpie my first sentence to get you started! (Please remember to vary your sentences by adding in conjunctions such as: because, if, so, while, after, although and when).

ModelEvery evening as the clock struck 7, the Angel family would carefully place the dinner on to boil as the small cottage let smoke escape through the chimney. The stream nearby would bubble and groan as the mysterious creatures would lurk underneath the water. The Angel family always spoke of adventures that they could imagine themselves in, riding on their magic carpet. However, something tonight felt different.

Maths:This week we are going to be focusing on Pictograms. I have heard you were all amazing at Pictograms last year, so I am sure you are all going to enjoy the maths learning this week 😊

Task 1: Please follow the link below to complete a recap on pictograms. You haven’t looked at these since last year, so we thought a small recap would be helpful. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zg4d2hv

Task 2: Now it’s time to put your skills to the test and create your own pictogram. You will need to ask your family what their favourite fruit is. You could even get other family members involved and ring and ask them for their answers. Please view the video on our YouTube channel where Miss Penniston models creating her very own pictogram based on the teacher’s favourite fruits here at school. You need to watch carefully and make sure you are setting out your pictogram correctly

Page 4: misspenniston.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewIf you would like to practise your inference skills even further, grab a book from home, maybe the one you are currently reading and

with labels.

Task 3: Please use the pictogram you created and answer the following questions, thinking about answering in full sentences with lots of mathematical reasoning.

1. What was the most popular fruit in your family? How do you know?2. What was the least favourite fruit in your family?3. What did each picture represent? 4. What does the biggest number take away the smallest number equal?5. How many more votes would you need to make the second favourite, the

overall favourite?

Task 4: Now that you are feeling confident creating your own pictograms, see if you can create another one based on a different topic, such as, how many different coloured cars you saw on a walk. Instead of having a picture for each car, you could create a key that explains that one yellow car represents 3 yellow cars. So, for example, if you saw 6 yellow cars, you would draw 2 of them onto your pictogram as they each represent 2 cars. Please post a picture of your pictogram on our class blog 😊 Remember that Miss Penniston explains this challenge in the maths video!

Challenge: Below are some questions relating to you being able to understand and interpret the pictograms and bar graphs. Have a go! (We have also put a picture of these questions onto the blog so that you can view them slightly bigger).

As mentioned previously, the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership (NOSSP) have launched Oxfordshire School Games at home- Sock Fest! Please follow the link below to look at the challenges they have set you! Every fortnight they upload new challenges for you to take part in. https://www.activeoxfordshire.org/school-games/

Topic:This week we will be continuing to look at plants in science. You have now looked at what a plant needs to survive and how to carry out an investigation. This week we would like you to focus on the different parts of a plant and the function/ job of each part.

Please watch the video below. You will need a pencil, piece of paper and access to the video. Please make sure you listen to the whole lesson, including answering some questions, writing a conclusion from last week and also making some new predictions! After the lesson has ended, please answer the questions below.

Page 6: misspenniston.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewIf you would like to practise your inference skills even further, grab a book from home, maybe the one you are currently reading and

1. Can you remember what your star words were?2. Can you explain what each one means? 3. What does the word ‘function’ mean?4. What is the function of the roots in a plant?5. What do flowers produce?6. Can you explain what is similar and different about the two plants from the

investigation last week?7. What was the dependent variable from last week and how do you know?8. What is your prediction about the plant in the cupboard?

If you would like to share some of the work you have completed, you can upload a photo of the work onto our class blog or even leave us a comment.

E safety information:10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1) Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2) Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3) Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4) Never give out your passwords.

5) Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

6) Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7) Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9) Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10) If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
