Hello and I hope everyone is keeping well. As we continue to be away from the school this week, I have set out some more schoolwork for you to continue with at home.

Note: As I have said in previous weeks, complete the work as best you can and do not worry if you get stuck in any area. Just skip on to the next thing and do your best in each topic area! That will be enough!

FAO Parents - Again I’d like to thank you for your efforts at home with the children during this busy time.

FAO Parents - If you wish to submit pictures of your child’s science or art activities for possible display on the school website, you are welcome to submit pictures for these two activities through the school email address ([email protected]). Parental permission is required to email to the school and display such material.

Extra Activities are not compulsory, but you may find them helpful for understanding new subject areas and I suggest checking them out as you go along.

History and Geography – this is the second week of the “Vikings in Ireland” project. On completion you are welcome to send a picture of the project through the school email address and it may be displayed on the school website.

The closing date for the “We are Writers” was the 29th May 2020. If possible, try to submit your writing activity as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We have had excellent writing pieces submitted so far from Finn, Ella, Aidan, Zac, Leah, Freya, Eli, Megan, Aaron, Conall, Sophia, Hazel and Ailbhe in 3rd class.

As mentioned last week, we also received great pictures from Leah and Ruby of their bridge building projects and (as mentioned above) you are welcome to submit art, science or project work to the school email address.

New PE activities – please note that information for the new ‘Ireland’s Fittest School’ initiative which the school is registered for, and how to access the videos, is available in the Active Sports tab on the school website. The YouTube video exercise sessions are posted online on Tuesday and Thursday, each week.

Monday Maths: This week, we are going to look at Division (3) (pg. 143 Topic 24 if you wish to access online version of the Planet Maths 3 book and resources at www.folensonline.ie There are some useful interactive resources to help with the pupils understanding of division especially games involving remainders which we will come across in this chapter).

In Division (2) in April, we looked at how division was repeated subtraction, whereby if I have a sum 14 ÷2 = 7 then I had to take 2 away or subtract 2 from 14 a total of 7 times to get back to zero and get my answer to this sum which was 7.

14 – 2 = 12 (taking away 2 for the first time)

12 – 2 = 10 (taking away 2 for the second time)

10 – 2 = 8 (taking away 2 for the third time)

8 – 2 = 6 (taking away 2 for the fourth time)

6 – 2 = 4 (taking away 2 for the fifth time)

4 – 2 = 2 (taking away 2 for the sixth time)

2 – 2 = 0 (taking away 2 for the seventh time)

So,

14 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 = 0 so we had to take away the number 2 seven times to get back to zero. So, 14 ÷ 2 = 7.

You could think of the sum above using an everyday example and this is a good way to help you think out how you will go about dividing the bigger number in the sum. If our sum is

14 ÷ 2 = 7 we could pretend the big number is 14 cakes and the smaller number is 2 small boxes. We want to divide the 14 cakes evenly between the 2 boxes. How will I divide the 14 cakes into the 2 boxes? The answer is that 7 will be put in each box. You could do this by putting one cake at a time into each box until you end up with none left outside the boxes. You should end up with 7 in each of the 2 boxes.

Today we are going to revise some of what we learned in Division (2) in April to refresh your memory before we go on to some new information tomorrow.

(‘split’ or ‘share’ are other words that can be used too, to describe the word ‘divide’ and we may use these words instead of ‘divide’ during this weeks lesson).

Attempt the questions below for today.

Complete the following exercise based on “es” words.

This week’s story is titled “The Diary of a Killer Cat”. It is a short story so you should be able to read it in two days.

Vocabulary: As we did in our ‘team teaching’ classes when we were in school, do a scan of the story first to see if there is any word you may need to check before you start reading the story. You can use a dictionary or, with parents/guardians permission you can check their meaning on the internet.

Maths: Division (3) continued.

What we have being trying to do so far is to divide (split or share) a big number into smaller groups. So, when we have 24 ÷ 3 = 8, we are asking how can I split 24 into 3 groups and what number will be in each group (answer will be 8).

We can write the sum 24 ÷ 3 = 8 another way in maths.

The sign above means the same as ÷ (divided by). So, in the sum 24 ÷ 3 = 8 we could write it this way

8

The way to read it is 24 divided by 3 equals 8.

Try to start with the number inside the two sides of the rectangle first (the 24) and say that this is divided by the number to the left of the line (the 3). Your answer always goes on top of the line (the 8).

Todays questions - using the new symbol for divide.

When doing the questions in B today, try to write out the sum when doing your answer using the new symbol for division so that you will get some practice using it for word problem questions.

Wednesday

Maths: Division (3) continued.

This symbol means divided by and you start with the number inside the line. Look back at Tuesday’s examples to refresh your memory of this symbol of division .

Today we are going to talk about remainders. Sometimes when we divide a large number by a small number, we cannot divide the big number into all the groups evenly so that all of the big number is shared equally among the groups or boxes or bags for example.

8

In the example above when we divided the number 24 sweets into 3 bags, 8 sweets fitted exactly or evenly into each bag so that there were no sweets left over.

However, what would happen if we had 25 sweets to divide amongst 3 groups

25 ÷ 3 = or

We know that 24 sweets can be divided into 3 bags of 8 sweets but if we want to divide 25 sweets into 3 bags, we are going to be left with one extra. This is called a ‘remainder’ and we use the letter ‘r’ to show this remainder. We can show how this would be written below.

8 r 1

Other examples -

5 r 1 7 r 1

Try the exercise below. Some of the questions may have a remainder and some questions may have no remainder. Question A says to use cubes. You may have cubes, coins, counters or other objects at home which you can use to help you work out the sum and see any remainder when you divide the big number into smaller groups using the smaller number.

ThursdayMaths – Division (3) continued…Remember Sometimes we will have larger numbers being divide into smaller groups and sometimes this large number will not divide evenly so that each group that the large number is being divided into, has the same amount as each other. Look back over our example form yesterdays number with the example of dividing 24 by 3 and then dividing 25 by 3. When dividing 25 by 3 we will have a remainder of 1. The remainder is the number that is left over after the groups have equal amounts in them. ‘r’ is the symbol we use for ‘remainder’ in the sums we do.

Numbers we are dividing into smaller groups can sometimes become a little tricky so the example below will help you see how we deal with bigger number. You can use cubes counter or other objects you may have at home to work out the example below.

The example above may look a little difficult.

1. The important thing to remember in the ‘short way’ is that you start with the first number under the line (the 6 in the example above) and ask yourself does the 5 ‘fit’ into it, and it does, one time or once with a remainder 1.

2. We put the answer 1 above the line and put the remainder next to the 5 under the line. The 5 is now 15. 3. We now ask ourselves 15 divided by 5 or how many times does 5 ‘fit’ into 15 and the answer is 3 which we

put above the line. 4. So 5 fits into 65, 13 times or we can split 65 into 5 groups with 13 in each group.

Materials and Change – Lava LampExperiment time!! – MAKE SURE THAT A PARENT/GUARDIAN IS WITH YOU WHEN YOU CARRY OUT ANY EXPERIMENT.

Experiment to make a lava lamp and investigate if oil and water will mix.

Read the information firstly to understand what should happen to both the water and oil. To carry out the experiments you need water, vegetable oil, a clear plastic bottle jar, food colouring, effervescent tablets.

If you don’t have the materials needed, don’t worry. You can complete the experiment at another time. Take a look at the video below to help you make the lamp.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-BYKKtXCGU

Only do this experiment in the presence of a parent/guardian and remember to dispose of vegetable responsibly and don’t let the water tap running !

You can always do it another time when you have what you need! Good luck!!
