SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

DEADLINE: APRIL 30, 2003E-MAIL OR MAIL ABSTRACTS TO:

EDNA S. KANESHIRODEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATICINCINNATI, OHIO 45221-0006, USA

T +1-513-556-9712; F +1-513-556-5280; E-MAIL: [email protected]

1. Indicate at the top of your abstract submission, whether it should be scheduled for presentation in the 8th International Workshops on Opportunistic Protists (IWOP-8) or in the International Conference on Anaerobic Protists (ICAP).

2. Indicate at the top of your abstract submission, your preference for platform or poster presentation.

3. First make a practice copy. Proofread carefully before making the final copy. If possible, please prepare using Microsoft Word software/windows, or save the file in this program (or save as a text file). If you do not have a computer, type the abstract as close as possible to the following:

The abstract should fit in a space 9.5 cm wide x 12 cm long (e.g., approximate margins for a 8.5 x 11 paper can be set at left margin: 60 pts, right margin: 280 pts, portrait style). Do not draw lines (box) around the abstract. We suggest using Helvetica or Arial font style, 9 points font size, and 10 points line spacing. The 9.5- cm width x 12-cm length abstract space would represent a total of approximately 275 words.

Using font size 9 points, after three space indentation, type the Title, then after a comma and using all capital letters, type the name(s) of author(s), then institution(s) and address(es).

Start the text on a new line following a three-space indent. Do not use returns at the ends of lines (we may have to reformat and would then need to delete return commands). Right justify. See example below.

4. You may submit your abstract(s) by one of the following ways:

a. E-mail to [email protected]. E-mail the abstract within the text of the e-mail message and also as an attachment.

b. Mail diskette with hard copy to Edna S. Kaneshiro, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45221-0006, USA

c. Only if an electronic file cannot be prepared, mail hard copy of the original and one photocopy of the abstract.

5. Plan your poster presentations to fit a 4 ft x 4 ft area.

ORGANISM-BASED DINNERS

At IWOP-7, organism-based dinners were popular and can be planned for IWOP-8/ICAP. Hilo has fewer choices of restaurants compared to Cincinnati and reservations should be made ahead of time. To get an idea whether meeting organizers should ask the University of Hawaii at Hilo Conference Center and the Local Arrangements Committee to make restaurant reservations, it would be helpful to get an idea of how many might want to attend a dinner with participants working on a specific organisms or group of organisms. There are two possible evenings in which these events might be scheduled.

Are you interested in attending a dinner with an organism-based group?

Yes No

If yes, please indicate group(s) by writing in the number of people this form covers (if only you, write 1 in the appropriate space following the organism; if you will be accompanied at these dinners with guests, indicate total numbers we should include for reservations):

Amoebae , Anaerobic Protozoa Cryptosporidium ;

Microsporidia ; Pneumocystis ; Toxoplasma

Travel and Visitor Information

See video presentation on Society of Protozoologists Website

RESERVATIONS: Book Your Reservations Early! EARLY air, hotel and car reservations are highly recommended.

FINAL DESTINATION: Your final destination is HILO, HAWAII (ITO) - Hilo International Airport. Route baggage directly to Hilo unless you are staying overnight on Oahu (Honolulu). Please confirm that your baggage is ticketed through to Hilo and “ITO” is marked on tags. No mainland or international carriers fly directly into Hilo International Airport so all conferees

will need to make inter-island flight arrangements.

ARRIVAL INTO HAWAII: For most conferees, your initial destination will be Honolulu, Hawaii. Upon arrival, you will proceed to the Inter-Island terminal where you will transfer to the local air

carrier for a short 40-minute flight to Hilo. Please be advised that the last flight from Honolulu to Hilo leaves at 6:45 p.m. A minimum of 2 hours between Honolulu flight arrival and Hilo departure is suggested to

accommodate for added security measures and to transfer to inter-island terminal.

WIKI WIKI SHUTTLE Free transportation is available between the main and inter-island terminals. Exit the main terminal and wait at one of the WIKI-WIKI SHUTTLE Bus stops. Shuttles arrive about every fifteen minutes and go to the inter-island terminal.

DIRECT FLIGHTS: Direct flights are also available to Kona-Hawaii; a 2-hour drive to Hilo. Direct flights are also available to the islands of Maui and Kauai, but inter-island transfers to Hilo are

required. Arrivals into Kailua-Kona (Keahole International Airport) may take advantage of the beautiful drive

from Kailua to Hilo (allow for a full day of exploring along the southern or northern routes to Hilo). The north coast drive winds through scenic Waimea (within a short drive of Waipio Valley), and

along the windward ocean shore. The southern route (about 3 hours) winds along rural roads, past coffee farms, macadamia nut orchards and black-sand beaches.

INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPANTS: International conferees must go through customs and immigration at the main terminal (Kona or

Honolulu International Airports). Travelers are advised to allow at least 3 hours for processing and transfer time between the main and

inter-island terminal.

VISA ARRANGEMENTS: A valid passport is necessary to enter the United States of America. Due to international agreements,

some countries also require a visa to be issued to legalize the situation, on a reciprocal basis. International scientists and travelers, intending to participate in the upcoming meetings, should verify

the specific requirements with foreign affairs authorities in their country, or with US consulates. Contact the following website for more information:

HAWAI`I’S WEATHER:Information provided from: Hawaii Weather Today

The Big Island is truly a natural wonder. Visitors here will find everything from stony deserts, to tropical forests, to high alpine zones, all on just one island. The Big Island in fact offers an opportunity to experience 11 of the world's 13 climate zones. Even with all this, the island is still a work in progress with Kilauea adding to, and reshaping it every day; the volcano even has an effect on her weather.

Because Hawaiian weather varies very little throughout the year, the weather you'll experience on the Big Island depends more on location than time of year. The wide variety of climates and the resulting range of temperatures and rainfall across the island are mid- to low 70's (23.9-26.1 C) during the winter months of November to April. A brief review of weather at several popular locations on the island will give visitors a sense of the range of weather they can expect.

On the dry southwest side of the island is the Kona-Kohala coast. The average summer daytime high temperatures are from 77-80 degrees F (25.0-26.7 C), with night lows of 61-64 degrees (16.1-17.8 C). Day temperatures in the winter here are usually 76-79 degrees (24.4-26.1 C), with night lows of 59-62 degrees (15.0-16.7 C). You generally can count on getting a lot of sun in the Kona area, where average monthly rainfall around Kona-Kailua is less than 1 inch in the summer and 1-3 inches during winter months

To the north is Waimea in the heart of the Big Island's paniolo (cowboy) country. Located up-slope from the Kona-Kohala beach areas, Waimea's 2,600 foot elevation is slightly cooler, with summer daytime high temperatures of 74-77 degrees (23.3-25.0 C) and night time lows of 53-58 degrees (11.7-14.4 C). In the winter, daytime highs here drop to 72-75 degrees (22.2-23.9 C); with nighttime lows of 51-54 degrees (10.6-12.2 C). ). Waimea is located right at the transition between the rainy, windward side of the island and the dry leeward side of the Kohala Mountains. The rainshadow effect is especially evident here, with half the town receiving only 1-3 inches of rain per month in the summer and 3-5 inches per month in the winter. Rainfall averages on the cool, misty windward side may be 5-10 times higher. Hilo is on the windward side of the Big Island.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING CAMERA-READY SHORT ARTICLESThese articles should not ordinarily exceed 1,500 words of text and one table and/or one figure, limiting it to fit 2 pages of The

Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology (231 mm x 181 mm). The RESULTS and the DISCUSSION are combined into a single section. Papers must be complete in themselves, with sufficient information presented to allow repetition of the results; accession numbers and repository information should be included.

Mail the original (printed on the enclosed high-quality laser paper or comparable) and one photocopy to Edna S. Kaneshiro (see below). Print the final copy only after you have prepared, edited, checked it (Checklist enclosed), and had someone else check it. Allow several days to perfect your article remember you will not be given the opportunity to make corrections or changes on a galley proof.

If the article contains photographs or color illustrations, mount illustrations separately. Tables and figures of line drawings must be printed or mounted separately.

General InstructionsAll articles must be in English.Font style Times-RomanDimensions in these instructions are given in points (not characters/inch). Conversions may be required by your software (72

points = 1 inch).Paragraphs are 3-space indentations.

TitleUse upper case for first letters of all words except for articles, prepositions and coordinate conjunctions. Italicize genus and

species names. Center and bold the title.Authors’ Names

Use upper case for all letters. Use full first names (not only initials) and surnames. Center, bold.Font size for authors’ names and address - 8 pt.If appropriate, place superscripted a, b, c after commas following authors’ name to indicate different addresses. For

corresponding author, place footnote at the end of the article. Corresponding author: First initial Last name Telephone: xxx-xxx-xxxx; Fax: xxx-xxx-xxxx; Email xxxxxx@xxxxxxxxx

AddressItalicize, center. If authors have different addresses, superscript appropriate letters before the individual addresses.

TextAn introduction begins the text. A heading for this section is not used. The headings for MATERIALS AND METHODS,

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGMENT, and LITERATURE CITED are capitalized and centered.References are referred to by numbers within square brackets [ ]. If several references within a [ ] are listed together in the

Literature Cited section, use a long dash between the first and last citations (e. g., [37]).Tables

Table number and description should be indented paragraph style at the TOP of the table. The number of the table is in arabic and bold. End table title with a period; begin description two spaces after the period.

Use a double line to separate the description of the table from the table itself.Notations within tables for footnotes are indicated by letters in lower case (a, b, c, etc.). Footnotes are placed below a single

line at the bottom of the table, and begin with a superscript letter.Figures

Black and white or color photographs should be glossy prints and should be mounted on a separate white thin poster board (DO NOT use heavy boards such as matting boards). They should be in the final size that will fit one or two columns.

Plates with multiple figures should be mounted butted up against each other - without spaces between individual photographs. Individual photographs should be labeled A, B, C, etc.

Figure legends are indented paragraph style at the bottoms of figures. Abbreviate the word figure (Fig.); the figure number should be in arabic and bold.

Photographs requiring color reproductions will require additional charges (contact Edna S. Kaneshiro for further information - see below).

AcknowledgmentsGrant support information is included here.

Literature CitedArrange alphabetically according to first author.Indent, number, two spaces, then the surname of the first author. ALL authors’ surnames are required (do not use et al. for

multiple authorships - the last may be the most important!). For more than one author, use ampersand (&) instead of a comma before the last author. The surname ends with a comma, followed by initials of first and middle names, with periods. Two spaces, then the publication year, followed by a period. Two spaces, then the title of the article, followed by a period. Two spaces, then the journal abbreviation or if the journal has a single term or name, spell out the entire name (italicized), comma, volume (bold), followed by a colon (:) inclusive pages using long dash between the first and last pages (e.g., [3439]), followed by a period.

Abstracts, articles not yet accepted for publication, dissertations, theses, and personal communications are not citable in this section. They may be referred to (in parenthesis) within the text.

[ ] All chemical and mathematical terms, formulae, and abbreviations should follow the style used in the Journal of Biological

Chemistry.[ ] The metric system must be used in all instances.[ ] Express centrifugation speed in gravitational forces (g) not rpm.[ ] Write out acronyms and abbreviations the first time used in text, abbreviate thereafter - realize that those outside your field of

specialty are not familiar with certain compounds, molecular genetics, immunology, etc. Only well-recognized abbreviations (e.g., AIDS) need not be defined.

[ ] Use unit abbreviations without first spelling out: kDa, bp, h, min, s, mo, yr, wk, d, vol, diam, mm, mM, etc.; designate temperature as oC.

[ ] Numbers: write out one to nine unless a measurement (e.g. four Erlenmeyer flasks; 3 ml of chloroform; 1,000 not 1000; 0.13 not .13.

[ ] Do not hyphenate a measurement (e.g., 10 ml; 45 kDa) unless it is used as a compound adjective (e.g., 10-ml tube; 45-kDa protein).

II. Title[ ] Title centered across whole page. Capitalize first letter of all words except articles, prepositions and coordinate conjunctions.[ ] Below title, include authors’ names (first name, middle initial, surname); capitalize all letters, Denote affiliations using letters.

[ ] Follow all instructions in Section I.[ ] Begin with a brief introduction, but DO NOT use the heading INTRODUCTION. Use the following headings only:

MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS AND DISCUSSION (combined into a single section), ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, LITERATURE CITED. Capitalize and center headings.

[ ] In general, names and dates of citations are not used in the text but are placed in the text as follows:1. Published materials (cited in Literature Cited section) are referenced within the text in square backets by number (e.g., [2,

46, 8]).2. Unpublished materials: (A. Smith, pers. commun.) or (A. Smith, unpubl.).3. Cite dissertations, theses and abstracts within the text. (Follow style as in the Literature Cited section.)

[ ] Be sure that the formatting done after you have coded in symbols has retained the symbols. RECHECK (e.g., all have not inadvertently been reconverted to m, etc.).

IV. Acknowledgments[ ] Funding source information can be placed here.

V. Literature Cited[ ] ALL authors of a publication must be listed (DO NOT use et al. or a long dash).[ ] References should be arranged alphabetically by the surname of the first author. References by a single author precede multi-

authored works by the same first author, regardless of date. List works by same author(s) chronologically, beginning with earliest date of publication.

[ ] Format references as shown below.JOURNAL ARTICLES:

[ ] Do not combine a table with a figure.VII. Figure Legends

[ ] Type legends in paragraph form. For plates, start with the inclusive title that describes all figures of the composite plate, e.g., Fig. 1. Effects of XYZ on life cycle stages of Toxoplasma gondii. A. Bradyzoite. B. Tachyzoite.

VIII. Figures[ ] Illustrations may be either black and white or color photographs, half-tones, line drawings, or graphs. Do not combine line

drawings and photographs. If both are necessary, e.g., Mr markers on a gel, you may either place the line elements on the photograph itself, or you may re-photograph the figure with the line elements and send that photograph as your original.

[ ] Figures should be arranged consecutively and assigned Arabic numbers.[ ] Original (printer’s set) glossy photographs and color illustrations must be mounted on thin white poster board (not heavy

matting board). Affix with dry mount adhesive or equivalent. Leave at least a 1-inch margin on all sides. It is advisable to protect illustrations with nonabrasive dust covers. You must prepare illustrations using professional standards and of the quality published in The Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology. Machine-reproduced (e.g., xerox or laser) copies are unacceptable if the resolution is not sufficient and do not clearly show what the reader needs to readily see.

[ ] Add symbols to figures with press-on or glued-on letters (preferably Helvetica or Franklin Gothic). Handwritten or typed symbols are not acceptable.

[ ] All lettering and symbols must be at least 2 mm.[ ] Each figure in a composite plate requires a number or a letter. Mount all glossy photos butted together, leaving no space

between adjacent photos (printer will add clean separator lines). Single figures that are not grouped into a plate should be numbered in the legend only; not on the figure itself.

[ ] Illustrations of highly magnified areas require bar scales.[ ] Write author(s) name(s) and figure number(s) on the back of each figure or plate (or outside the 1-inch margins surrounding the

mounted figure) with arrow indicating the top.[ ] Authors will be charged for color reproduction.

IX. Reprints[ ] Reprint orders should be submitted to Allen Press at the same time that you submit the camera-ready Proceedings articles to E.

Kaneshiro. There will be additional charges for reprints with color illustrations. There will be additional charges if you order reprints after the publication has gone to press.
