Why do we get ashes on our fore-heads on Ash Wednesday? To ancient Jews, wearing sackcloth and covering themselves or sitting in ashes showed repentance and humility, and acted as a penance. Thus, the early Church adopted the practice of wearing ashes at the start of Lent to show re-

pentance, too. But as he places the ashes on our foreheads, the priest says, “Remember you are dust and unto dust you will return,” to re-mind us that our time on earth will pass away but our life in Heaven will last forever.

Dear Friends in Jesus Christ… Have you ever felt that life is demanding more than you can ever give? Have you ever felt that your leisure/relaxation time was interrupted by having to spend that time on others, like family, work, friends, etc.? And what is your attitude on those times? Today we see in the Gospel that some people ruined Jesus' vacation (see Mk 6:31). They wouldn't even let Him and His Apostles rest a little and eat (Mk 6:31). If a crowd of people made life that difficult for us, we might resent it or be upset. However, Jesus felt compassion for the crowd and "began to teach them at great length" (Mk 6:34). I would like to share with you an incident that happened in my life. It is a confession of my failure to act as Jesus for a moment. On December 24th 2012, I was at Mater Dei Parish in Newport, Vermont. It is a cluster parish of five churches. The farthest church is 45 miles away from the rectory. The whole week was busy decorating for Christmas all five churches. I was almost exhausted, but the worst thing was the freezing cold. The snow was piled up above our head and the temperature was down -10 degrees. I celebrated the 4 pm Christmas Vigil Mass then the 6:30 pm Mass and last Mass, which I believe was at 9 pm (all at different churches). After the Holy Mass I was driving home at midnight and was very hungry, for I didn’t get time to eat my supper. I had only one thing on my mind; just to get home to eat something and go to bed. As I was pulling into the driveway my pager went off. It was an emergency call from the hospital. I said “Really…now!” For a moment I felt very bad. I didn’t feel like going. But soon I came to my senses. I called the hospital and now I find that I do not have to go to the hospital, but to a home, which was about 35 miles away. An old lady was dying and they tried to get their priest, but he was not answering the phone. That was why they called the hospital. I said “Very good, thank you Lord.” I set out. My GPS stopped working about a mile before the house. The houses in that area are far away from each other and almost all the mailboxes were under snow. I stopped at each mailbox and cleared the snow off to find the house number. Finally after an hour and a half of driving, I found the house. The scene at the house was not very welcoming. They were all waiting for the death of their mother/grandmother. I saw some of the grandchildren, I believe, sitting around a table drinking beer, smoking, and playing cards. I asked them to come to pray together, but got no response. I prayed with her and anointed her and gave her the Apostolic Pardon. She received Jesus and I said in her ear that Jesus loves her and she smiled. With a heart full of joy and satisfaction, I left the home. I went to bed around 2:30 am and I slept for 3 hours. In the morning I never felt tired, but I was full of energy. There are times in our lives, as a pastor, priest, teacher, parent, friend, or employee, when we feel we can no longer carry the burden that has been placed upon us. There are times in life when we feel like Jesus who cried out in the Garden of Gethsemane “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me”. We saw after the prayer an angel from Heaven came to comfort Jesus. When we feel we are crushed by some heavy burden, we should do what Jesus did. Turn to God and pray and see how God will work miracles. The grace we should ask Jesus is to have a heart similar to His. Do you have the heart of Jesus for people who demand a lot from you, inconvenience you, or even hurt you? Are you willing to lay down your life to feed the sheep? It can be your children, your family or friend. Jesus is looking for people after His own heart, people with a shepherd's heart, who would never give up their own. Jesus gave us a new heart (Ez 36:26) when we were baptized into Him (see Rm 6:3). However, for that heart to beat with Christ's love, even for the most unlovable, we must daily surrender every detail of our lives to Him. Jesus invites us: "Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart" (Mt 11:29). Are you willing to learn to love with the heart of Jesus? Are you willing to have your heart broken open for love?

God Bless you!

Fr. Tom

Youth Ministry The Appalachia mission trip was a huge success! We faced many challenges including a break down of our material de-livery truck, a flat tire in a youth transport van, and rain every day, but still our spirits remained strong and we perse-vered! We demolished a dilapidated porch and staircase, dug lots of holes, poured over four thousand pounds of con-crete, built the substructure, decked the staircase and landings, and even finished the railings and spindles. We shared meals together, and morning and evening prayer together. One song named “Fix My Eyes” summed up our experi-ence.."Love like I'm not scared, give when it's not fair, live life for a brother, take time for another, fight for the weak ones, speak out for freedom...and above it all fix my eyes" We spent a week fixing our eyes on the kingdom of God and living in catholic community. You have every reason to be extraordinarily proud of our teens who worked for hours in the rain and mud to complete what seemed at times an impossible task, the finishing touches were completed long after normal work hours on the evening of our last day in a steady rain because our team refused to fall short of perfection. I spent some time speaking with the owner who felt undeserving of such an effort, I reminded her that God is good all the time. Please take a glance at some pictures in the back of the church to get a sense of this mission trip adventure. We are deeply thankful for your prayers and financial support, and we did pray in thanksgiving for you at prayer. God Bless you!!
