A Message from the Board Chairman and President

“You can perform miracles by touching the hearts of those entrusted to your care.”

—St. John Baptist de La Salle

Dear De La Salle Community,

We are deeply grateful for the generous support and continued commitment of all those who contribute to De La Salle Institute to provide the necessary resources so that today’s young people may receive a college preparatory educational experience of the highest quality. We are Meteors United!

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to present unique challenges and the economic fallout has had a profound impact on many of our students and their families. Your financial support of De La Salle helps sustain the school’s financial strength and independence, and enables us to provide opportunities for young women and men who benefit from an innovative Lasallian education. By investing in De La Salle, you’ve shown your care and concern for the future of our Meteors.

Though there is still much work to be done, we joyfully celebrate our accomplishments and continue to plan for a much brighter future ahead.

Today, we are pleased to present the Investors Report for the 2019–2020 fiscal year. On the following pages, you will not only note the gifts of your fellow alumni and friends, but you will read about how alumni, families, friends, and the business community work in partnership for the greater good of society. De La Salle is an example of a quality investment whose mission is to create faith-filled citizens, who contribute to society by living their lives in service to the larger community.

As benefactors and stakeholders, you help to nurture the continued growth of the school by providing vital resources for our students and families. Thank you for your steadfast commitment to De La Salle Institute. This pandemic has taught us that we not only need each other, but have a responsibility for the success of each other. We are Meteors United! Together, let us remain united in our efforts. Again, thank you for your ongoing support and friendship.

enough right now. With COVID-19 still having an effect on everything at our school, on our fami-

lies and in the world, we have incurred some hardships at De La Salle. Many of you asked how you could help us.

In response, De La Salle created the Meteor Rising Fund. More than 125 alumni and friends have already contributed to this important fund, raising nearly $62,000 to support our student financial assistance program. We are committed to working with each family to ensure their child can continue their education here at De La Salle. Your gift made this pos-sible. We are Meteors United!

There is still much work to do as we continue educating cur-rent and future Meteors! Many of our families continue to face challenges as they navigate the transition of being back in school, and that’s why it is so important that you know the true impact of your generosity. Support from the De La Salle community has ensured that we can continue to provide each student with the personalized instruction and care that are so critical in an excellent Lasallian education.

We are Meteors United! Alumni and friends of De La Salle recognize the importance and value of the educational

mission and how it is carried out with steadfast dedication, not only for our students, but also for the community and the future good of the country. The ongoing support of our benefactors is an important reason why the school continues to flourish and impact the lives of so many young women and men.

Why support the Meteor Rising Fund? A recent donor to the fund shared this: “As an alumnus of De La Salle, I have always loved the school and the great education I received. I do not believe that I would have been the husband, father or grandfather or even the church leader that I am today, had it not been for De La Salle. I will always do whatever I can to help a fellow Meteor!”

Your generosity helps keep a De La Salle education accessible for our students, and more importantly, you give our students an opportunity to receive an innovative Lasallian education and give hope to our families. Your financial support is mak-ing an impact, and we are so grateful for everything you do to support De La Salle Institute. Again, we thank you.

If you have not already made a gift in support of the Meteor Rising Fund and would like to do so, please visit http://www.dls.org/meteorrising.jsp.

THAnKs to tHe exeMplArY generositY of oUr donors, De La Salle is able to provide a Lasallian, college-preparatory education to the young women

and men of Chicago who desire to receive one.

Here is a story written by Patrick Finley, son of Morgan M. Finley ’43. In it, Patrick explains why giving back to De La Salle is something very important to him and how our school played an integral role in his father’s life.

The Brothers of the Christian Schools of De La Salle gave my late father a free education. I felt it was time for a little payback. Accordingly, I established the Morgan M. Finley ’43 Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

Life did not start easily for my father, who was a poor kid from Bridgeport. When my Dad was three, his mother died. His father left Dad and his three siblings to be raised by their grandmother “Nanny” during the Great Depression.

Money was tight and practically nonexistent. My Dad sold newspapers outside Comiskey Park to help support his fam-ily. Many of the Sox players knew my Dad and liked him. Back then, when a player hit a home run, he received a case of Wheaties. Some players gave them to my Dad. His family survived on a lot of Wheaties.

His grandmother, “Nanny,” through dogged persistence, per-suaded the Brothers at De La Salle Institute to give him a free education. Dad repaid Nanny and the Brothers by making the honor roll for four straight years.

The education provided by De La Salle gave my father the ability to compete on an equal footing with those raised under more privileged conditions. De La Salle provided book learn-ing, spiritual development, and discipline. Rather than being forever relegated to the lower social and economic strati of society, the Lasallian education set my Dad on a path to become a success at whatever he did.

The first reason I established the Morgan M. Finley ’43 Memorial Scholarship was to show our family’s gratitude for what the Brothers did for my father. In his time, money was tight, and tuition was a luxury few could afford.

The second reason is the cost of tuition. Today, it costs much more to send a child to a private high school. As in my Dad’s time, money is tight, and many families struggle to provide their children the first-class education one gets at De La Salle. It is my hope that the scholarship will enable young men and women to rise to their fullest potential as productive mem-bers of society.

We are grateful to Mr. Finley for writing this and for estab-lishing the Morgan M. Finley ’43 Endowed Scholarship at De La Salle. It assuredly will make a difference in the lives of our students.

If you are interested in establishing an endowed scholarship at De La Salle, please contact our Director of Development, Iris Gist Cochran, at (312) 842-7355 ext. 152 or [email protected]. Thank you!

Thomas Haepp ’20 was chosen for membership in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s (CYSO) Jazz Orchestra, which is dedicated to the study and performance of classic and contemporary big-band jazz music.

LINK Unlimited ScholarshipDOMINIQUE JOSEPH ’23 – LINK SCHOLAR

A s o p H o M o r e i n t H e H o n o r s p r o g r A M , Dominique Joseph chose to attend De La Salle Institute because of its unrivaled academic oppor-

tunities as well as the strong guidance the school offers. Dominique is a LINK Unlimited Scholar. There are cur-rently twelve LINK scholars attending De La Salle for the 2020–2021 academic year.

Dominique believes that De La Salle has brought her closer to God and has instilled in her the intense desire to be the best person she can become. Dominique is an outstanding student with a 4.0 grade-point average and is active in the French Club. She enjoys the challenge of her Honors courses and is proud to be a LINK Unlimited scholar. At LINK Unlimited, you’re not just another student, mentor or donor. You are part of an interconnected network of individuals and organizations working to elevate the future of high-potential African-American youth.

In 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King visited Chicago and while here inspired the late John C. Parmer ’46 and his wife, Carolyn Noonan Parmer to take the necessary steps towards helping fulfill Dr. King’s dream. LINK Unlimited Scholars was born when they decided to mentor and support a single African-American student through four years of high school, and asked their friends to do the same.

Since those humble beginnings, LINK Unlimited has suc-cessfully supported more than 2,500 scholars. Their goal is to provide high-achieving African-American students who show great promise for personal leadership, achievement and suc-cess, both in and out of the classroom, with the financial and

personal support they need to change the trajectory of their future.

While education may be the core of its program-ming, the scholar/mentor relationship is at the heart of what LINK Unlimited achieves. It bridges the gap between students’ dreams for the future and the real-ity of achieving that future, by giving them the experience, guidance and network they need to fulfill their lifelong goals. The organization has helped many De La Salle students like Dominique, who otherwise might not have been able to attend the Institute without financial support.

“I’ve been provided with numerous opportunities and resources as well as met many great people through my involvement with LINK Unlimited,” Dominique said. “I might not have had the chance to experience so many great things if it were not for LINK Unlimited.”

LINK Unlimited requires its scholars to be involved in at least one extracurricular activity that goes beyond the realm of sports. When Dominique graduates from De La Salle, she plans to attend a four-year college or university. She under-stands the value of giving back and looks forward to sharing her time, talent and treasure to help others.

Since 1966, LINK Unlimited has been a leading partner with De La Salle Institute and its students. Because of the orga-nization’s generous commitment, De La Salle is on track to being the premier high school of choice for Chicago’s stu-dents, helping to develop not only the minds of today’s young women and men, but most important, the Lasallian values of faith, service and community.

“I’ve been provided with numerous opportunities and resources as well as met many great people through my involvement with LINK Unlimited.”

—Dominique Joseph ’23

Victor DeAvila ’20 and Emily McManus ’20 were the winners of the George Eastman Young Leaders Award for their exemplary leadership skills as well as their excellence in the classroom.

The Meteor women’s junior-varsity basketball team won the 2020 Girls Catholic Athletic Conference White Division championship as it defeated Trinity and finished the season with an overall record of 19–8. De La Salle’s coaches were head coach Angel Brooks ’10 and assistant Brian Bialczak ’94.

We Are Meteors United  23

Page 26: We re Meteorsn ited!

Each year, De La Salle Institute hosts the traditional all-class year alumni banquet. At this banquet, we commemorate all five-year anniversary classes. Last year’s celebration, hosted at the Beverly Country Club on Saturday, October 5, 2019, included the Jubilee Classes of 1969 and 1994. Other classes celebrating reunions were the Classes of 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.

A very important part of the celebration is establishing the anniversary class gift scholarships. These scholarships represent the care for the past and future excellence of De La Salle Institute. Whether alumni attend the banquet or not, support of the class scholarships are a way of saying “thank you” to De La Salle for a privileged education. On behalf of the entire De La Salle educational community, we would like to extend a special thank you to all anniversary classes for their generous support of our Meteors!

The Helen Brach Foundation The Helen Brach Foundation Supports Academic Web-based Platforms

THe Helen BrAcH foUndAtion And de lA sAlle institUte have partnered together since 1989 to provide excellence in Lasallian education in one of

the underserved areas of Chicago. In an area where edu-cational opportunities are greatly needed, the ongoing support of the Brach Foundation has helped us provide a solid foundation for many young women and men through-out De La Salle’s long-standing history. Our dedication to academic excellence remains as strong as ever.

During this challenging time of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are so inspired by the generosity of so many benefac-tors, like the Helen Brach Foundation. The renewed grant awarded in the 2019–2020 fiscal year funded three academic web-based platforms: TestRocker, EBSCO and Schoology. Access to these academic web-based platforms enriches our curriculum and prepares our students to meet the grow-ing demands for testing, research and technology in today’s world. This renewed grant from the Brach Foundation was truly instrumental as we continue to deal with the unique cir-cumstances of the pandemic.

At De La Salle, we are truly fortunate to have an advanced learning platform and faculty who are prepared to utilize their creativity in keeping the students engaged in learning. This technology ushers in fundamental structural changes that can be integral to achieving significant improve-ments in productivity. Used to support both teaching and learning, technology infuses classrooms with digital learn-ing tools, expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials. It enhances student engagement and motivation and accelerates learning.

We are excited about receiving this generous grant and the opportunity it presents for making sure that the next gen-eration of Meteors are successful. The active involvement of partners like the Helen Brach Foundation makes possi-ble all of our growth and the innovative steps we have taken to ensure that our students will become knowledgeable and faith-filled young people.

On behalf of the entire De La Salle educational com-munity, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Helen Brach Foundation for its continued generosity and investment in our Meteors.

Six De La Salle students participated in the 2020 Chicago Archdiocesan Math Competition sponsored by the Math Teachers Association of Chicago and Vicinity at Loyola University. Representing De La Salle from the Class of 2020 were Alexandra Brist; Christopher Considine; Victor DeAvila; Kayla Roman-Flores and Drayona Rollins.

TOLTON CENTER PERSEVERES IN SPITE OF THE PANDEMICTolton center’s Mission is to provide excellent alternative adult education and family literacy experiences within a caring community where “everyone teaches and everyone learns.”

Founded by De La Salle Institute in 1991, Tolton Center started as a GED program with as many as eight locations. In 2010, Tolton’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program began at Our Lady of Tepeyac Elementary School. The ESL program relocated from the elementary school site to the Head Start site at 2414 S. Albany in Chicago. To strengthen family education in the Little Village neighborhood, Tolton Center offers family literacy. Through this partnership, students of all ages are welcome.

Here is an update as to the progress the Tolton Center and its students have made and are continuing to make during the pandemic.

“Our student body is incredibly resil-ient,” Megan Pawlak Bodett, the Director of Tolton Center said. “Tolton students have persevered in ways many cannot imagine, and have continued to do so in the months of the pandemic.

“As a new and different school year begins, students are choosing to overcome the barriers that language and technology present by continuing to study while our

classes are virtual. Their steadfast dedication to bettering them-selves and their families is truly inspiring.”

Tolton Center has worked hard to adapt to the challenges the pandemic has presented. Many students experienced health and financial crises during Illinois’ quarantine period.

During this time, the staff worked hard to connect students to neighborhood resources. Through Tolton’s work with the Little Village Education Collaborative, a number of students received financial aid.

Other students were connected to a neighborhood food pan-try that provided needed assistance. These referrals, among others, were important to help students and their families survive that

challenging time. Moreover, teachers and students continued to support one another despite no longer being together in person.

Students compassionately cared for one another as many were severely impacted by the virus. The community of care that had been formed earlier last year helped sustain students during a chal-lenging time and has continued into the current school year.

After taking a break over the summer, Tolton Center resumed classes earlier this fall. All classes are remote and Tolton students are rising to the challenge. In addition to learning a new language, students are challenging themselves to learn how to use technology in ways they never have before.

Many students have commented that participating in Tolton’s remote classes is enabling them to feel more confident as they help their children with their distance learning. The eagerness of stu-dents to learn and connect during this unique and challenging season is a real gift.

Despite everything, Tolton Center seeks to meet students’ needs, help connect families to resources and foster learning.

Please contact De La Salle’s Vice President of External Affairs and Operations, Lawrence Blakley at (312) 842-7355 ext. 142 or blakleyl@ dls. org for more information about the Tolton Adult Centers.

The school has been built by conducting capital campaigns, securing legacy gifts, establishing endowed scholarships and securing support for the Annual Fund. These philanthropic invest-

ments come in all shapes and sizes. This effort has ensured our strength and has helped sustain the growth of De La Salle.De La Salle continues to strengthen its position as a leader at the forefront of college preparatory education in Chicago.

Our campaign, Meteoric – Elevating De La Salle Institute addresses the most critical facility and programming needs the school faces today. It enables De La Salle to continue to offer the very best value-based education to the next generations of Meteors. Success in the campaign will require a strong commitment from alumni and friends. Through our combined actions, words, generosity, time and service, we can shape a better future for De La Salle.

The school is a great example of a quality investment whose mission is to create faith-filled citizens, who contribute to society by living their lives in service for the larger community. The return on this investment is immeasurable. Together, we will make De La Salle the best learning environment possible for our Meteors and strengthen our position as a leader at the forefront of college preparatory education in Chicago.
