East Jordan Iron Works, Inc. was established by

William E. Malpass and his father-in-law, Richard

W. Round on November 8, 1883 and is located on

the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix in East Jordan,

Michigan, USA. During the 1930’s and 1940’s, William

Malpass gradually transferred management function

to three sons, William H. “Will” Malpass, Richard W.

“Dick” Malpass and Theodore E. “Ted” Malpass.

A third generation of leadership led by Will’s son,

W. E. “Bill” Malpass and Ted’s son, F. Bruce Malpass

emerged in the 1960’s and 70’s during which time

the foundry converted to modern automated molding

equipment. Since the 1980’s the business has been

led by a fourth generation of the Malpass family;

Bill’s son Fred Malpass, and F. Bruce’s sons, Tracy

Malpass and Tad Malpass. Fred, Tracy and Tad have

transformed the Midwest business into a national

leader of construction castings by acquiring and

establishing additional distribution locations and

building a state-of-the-art foundry in Ardmore, OK.

A history of family involvement, dedicated employees,

(many who are multi-generational) and a commitment

to reinvestment has kept EJIW competitive in a

global economy.

state, and local agencies nationwide. EJIW has earned a reputation for quality products since 1883.

Our extensive product line includes manhole frames and covers, utility castings for the telecommunications

industry, trench grates, tree grates, detectable warning plates, airport and design specific castings, monument

Our Safety Grate System is manufactured to make new installations and retrofits equally easy to install. In many cases all that is necessary is the removal of the existing cover and hinges. The new hatch is then lagged to the top of the existing structure.

Our grates cover an opening and provide fall through protection in conformance with OSHA standard 1910.23.

• Doors cannot be closed unless the fall through protection has been put back in place (protecting the next operator).

• Visual inspections and limited maintenance can be done while safety grate is left in place.

• Orange safety grates create a visual barrier around the pit; an epoxy-polyester (hybrid) powder coating promotes an awareness of the hazard and provides a mar-resistant finish.
