Three nationally-ranked teams (USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls) are within three points atop the WCHA standings: No. 20 Northern Michigan leads with 52 points, No. 5 Minnesota State is in second place with 51 and No. 14/15 Bowling Green is in third (49). The Mavericks, however, have two games in-hand on both the Wildcats and Falcons. All three have clinched home ice for the quarterfinals of the 2018 WCHA Playoffs (NMU will host for the first time since 2012). Defending champion Bemidji State is still alive with 39 points (and two games in-hand on NMU and BGSU). The fourth-place Beavers have a two-point lead (and two games in-hand) on fifth-place Michigan Tech for the last quarterfinal-round home ice slot. Both teams have secured a 2018 WCHA Playoffs berth ahead of this weekend's series in Houghton. Alabama Huntsville (30 points), Alaska (29) and Ferris State (28) are also separated by just three points in the sixth- through eighth-place spots. All three are still in the hunt for home ice. Lake Superior State and Alaska Anchorage, which meet this weekend in the Last Frontier, are still alive in the playoff chase, but need to accumulate points -- and receive outside help. Winning Hockey: The WCHA's top four teams all rank among the top-15 nationally this season for winning percentage. Minnesota State ranks third in the NCAA at .750 (21-7-0). Bowling Green is 10th (.625, 17-0-6), Northern Michigan -- which has its most victories since a 20-win campaign in 2009-10 -- is 11th (.609, 18-11-3) and Bemidji State is 15th (.667, 14-10-6). The Mavericks have played the best hockey in the country since Dec. 1, going 12-2-0 (.857). The Falcons are tied for seventh in that span at .706 (11-4-2), while the Wildcats are ninth at .694 (11-4-3). Since New Year's Day, MSU is tops at .875 (7-1-0), while BGSU (.750, 9-3-0) and NMU (.750, 7-2-1) are tied for sixth. 6x20: At 21-7-0, Minnesota State has reached the 20-win plateau for six-consecutive seasons, the longest run in program history. The Mavericks have won 143 games since opening night of the 2012-13 season, matching North Dakota and Quinnipiac for most nationally. Back-to-Back Shutouts: Junior Nick Kossoff (28 saves) and freshman Mareks Mitens (36 stops) combined to give Lake Superior State back-to-back, 2-0 shutout wins last weekend at Bemidji State. It marked the first time the Lakers had shutouts in consecutive games since March 2013 (3-0 at Northern Michigan on March 2 and 2-0 vs. Bowling Green on March 8). LSSU had not blanked the same opponent for an entire weekend series since holding Ferris State scoreless Nov. 12-13, 2010 (1-0 and 4-0). Lighting the Lamp: With scoring in WCHA league games up nearly 10 percent over final 2016-17 numbers (to 5.74 goals per game, from 5.22), six WCHA skaters are among the top-25 goal-scorers in the country. UAH senior and Huntsville native Josh Kestner is tied for second with a WCHA-leading and career-high 20, becoming the Chargers' first 20-goal scorer since Bruce Mulherin (24) and Jared Ross (22) in 2004-05. NMU senior Robbie Payne (18), junior Troy Loggins (16) and sophomore Darien Craighead (15) are tied for sixth, 12th and 16th, respectively, while each has set a new career high. MSU senior C.J. Suess is tied for 16th (a career-best 15), while BGSU senior Mitch McLain is tied for 24th (14). BY THE NUMBERS 8: Categories in which Minnesota State leads the country: wins (21), goals per game (3.86), goal margin (+47), power play goals (38), power play pct. (.277), fewest shots allowed per game (22.04), shots on goal margin (+334) and shots on goal margin per game (+11.93). 10: Wins for Alabama Huntsville, most by a Chargers team since the 2009-10 campaign. THE WEEK AHEAD Winter Carnival and Points Chase Highlight Weekend: The annual Winter Carnival weekend in Houghton also has major WCHA Playoffs implications, as fourth-place Bemidji State visits Michigan Tech with a two-point lead on the Huskies for the final quarterfinal-round home ice slot. League-leading Northern Michigan, which has a one-point lead on second-place Minnesota State, hosts seventh-place Alaska, which trails sixth-place Alabama Huntsville by a single point; meanwhile, the Chargers host the Mavericks. Lake Superior State visits Alaska Anchorage, with both looking to keep their postseason hopes alive. 2017-18 IMPORTANT DATES Date Event Feb. 23-24 Final weekend of the regular season March 2-4 2018 WCHA Quarterfinals Host sites; seeds 1-4 March 9-11 2018 WCHA Semifinals Host sites; top 2 seeds March 17 2018 WCHA Semifinals Host site; top seed March 23-25 2018 NCAA Regionals Four sites April 5-7 2018 NCAA Frozen Four Xcel Energy Center Saint Paul, Minn. 2017-18 WCHA STANDINGS Conference Overall Rk (Natl Rank) Team Pts GP W L T 3/SW % GF GA GP W L T % GF GA 1 (20) Northern Michigan*^ 52 24 16 6 2 2 .708 75 58 32 18 11 3 .609 97 90 2 (5) Minnesota State*^ 51 22 17 5 0 0 .773 92 49 28 21 7 0 .750 108 61 3 (14/15) Bowling Green*^ 49 24 14 5 5 2 .688 75 57 32 17 9 6 .625 99 82 4 Bemidji State* 39 22 11 7 4 2 .591 65 49 30 14 10 6 .567 84 71 5 Michigan Tech* 37 24 10 9 5 2 .521 71 66 31 14 12 5 .532 95 87 6 Alabama Huntsville 30 24 9 13 2 1 .417 63 72 30 10 18 2 .367 72 93 7 Alaska 29 22 9 12 1 1 .432 64 67 28 11 15 2 .429 83 86 8 Ferris State 28 24 9 14 1 0 .396 57 72 32 12 19 1 .391 73 101 9 Lake Superior State 21 24 6 15 3 0 .312 51 79 32 8 20 4 .312 68 110 10 Alaska Anchorage 12 22 2 17 3 3 .159 41 85 28 2 22 4 .143 51 107 * - clinched spot in 2018 WCHA Playoffs; ^ - clinched home ice in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 WCHA Playoffs (3 points for win in regulaon or 5-on-5 OT; 1 point for e aſter regulaon and 5-on-5 OT; 1 point for win in 3-on-3 OT or shootout; rankings listed by USCHO.com first, followed by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine) WCHA.TV In partnership with industry leader Stretch Internet, WCHA.tv - the official online streaming plaorm of the WCHA - will provide fans with live and archived broadcasts of WCHA hockey, now available via OTT aps on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV. 2017-18 WCHA preseAson polls

minnesotA stAte tAbbed As preseAson WCHA FAvorite

The program that owns the fourth-most wins nationally over the last five years is the heavy 2017-18 favorite in the men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), as Minnesota State sits atop both the Mankato Free Press WCHA Coaches’ and UAHHockey.com WCHA Media preseason polls.

Predictions on the final standings by coaches and media mirrored each other, led by a Mavericks team that has 122 victories since Mike Hastings took the reins prior to the 2012-13 season. Minnesota State, which also owns two MacNaughton Cups (2014-15 and 2015-16 as co-champs) and a pair of Broadmoor Trophies (2014 and 2015) in that span, received all nine possible first-place votes from coaches and 12 of 14 from the media.

Defending MacNaughton Cup champion Bemidji State received the other coaches’ first-place vote and is in second place in both poll. The Beavers are followed by reigning Broadmoor Trophy champion Michigan Tech (one media first-place vote) in third, Bowling Green (one media first-place vote) in fourth and Ferris State in fifth. The Huskies and Falcons – both on three-year runs of 20+ victories – are tied for ninth and tied for 13th nationally for wins since realignment, with 89 and 84, respectively. The Bulldogs are 18th with 80 victories in that span (Minnesota State is tied for fifth with 98).

Coaches and media also tabbed Lake Superior State (sixth place), Northern Michigan (seventh) and Alaska (eighth) to qualify for the WCHA Tournament, with Alabama Huntsville (ninth) and Alaska Anchorage (10th).

There was a tie among the league coaches for WCHA Preseason Player of the Year, as two Minnesota State players, sophomore forward Marc Michaelis and junior defenseman Daniel Brickley – the media’s pick – each received four coach votes apiece. Bemidji State senior goaltender Michael Bitzer, the 2016-17 Player of the Year, and Beavers’ senior forward Gerry Fitzgerald split the other two coach votes.

Michaelis, a native of Mannheim, Germany, was the WCHA Rookie of the Year, a first-team All-WCHA selection and the league’s top overall scorer last season with 36 points (14g-22a), tied for the seventh-best nationally by a first-year skater and the second-most by a Maverick freshman in the program’s Division I history. Brickley, from Sandy, Utah, was the league’s 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year, a first-team All-WCHA pick and the WCHA’s top-scoring defenseman with 31 points (8g-23a), while his 1.00 points-per-game ranked second among NCAA blue-liners. The pair finished two-three in the WCHA scoring race during league play, posting 28 (13g-15a) and 26 (7g-19a) points, respectively.

Minnesota State freshman forward Jake Jaremko was the coaches’ choice for WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year. The Nowthen, Minn. native, former Minnesota Mr. Hockey and 2017 Clark Cup (USHL) champion with the Chicago Steel (USHL) player was one of three Mavericks to appear on coaches’ ballots. The others were forward Reggie Lutz and defenseman Connor Mackey. Bemidji State forward Brendan Harris and Northern Michigan forward Joseph Nardi also received votes.

The coaches and media preseason All-WCHA Teams both featured Michaelis, Brickley and Bitzer. The Bemidji State netminder led the WCHA in all major goaltending categories last season and paced the country with a 1.71 goals-against average and six shutouts (tied), complementing a 22-14-3 record and .932 save percentage (20-5-2, .940 and 1.40 in league play).

Coaches teamed Michaelis with Bowling Green senior Mitch McLain and Minnesota State senior C.J. Suess, while the media tabbed McLain and Ferris State junior Corey Mackin. McLain was fourth overall and tied for fourth in WCHA play in scoring last season (17-16=33, 15-9=24), with Suess was fifth overall and tied for fourth in league action (12-19=31, 9-14=21). Mackin followed his 2015-16 WCHA Rookie of the Year campaign with a 26-point sophomore season (13g-13a), including 21 in league games (11g-10a).

Michigan Tech senior Mark Auk was the coaches’ other blue-line pick after posting 23 points overall last season and ranking 10th among all WCHA skaters with 18 assists (2-8=10 in league play). Alabama Huntsville junior Kurt Gosselin was the media’s choice, following a season in which he led league defensemen and with nine goals and tied for fourth with 18 points in just 24 WCHA games.
