Jay Humphreys,Pastor of Chisholm Trail Cowboy Church

It’s hard to believe we are beginning the last year of our three-year strategic plan we’ve called, “Together, We Can Create the Future.” Thank you for your prayers, input, honesty, work and service.

In almost every case, we have seen this ministry we call WBA expand – sometimes by inches, sometimes by yards and sometimes by leaps. Allow me to highlight a few accomplishments:

Where do we go from here? We have already begun our assessment time with staff that will be critical for our next Strategic Plan for 2015 and beyond! I will be working with our Executive Leadership Team between now and April to do the same. The future is bright and challenging.

As our county continues to grow at a rapid pace, our churches are seeking to be the presence of Christ in their communities and around the world. Together, we can continue to create the future.

Be assured, we will remain committed to assisting our churches in fulfilling their mission. Count on us to explore and create new partnerships, strategies and paradigms to address the opportunities we have to share Christ, start churches, develop leaders and bring relevant, customized church solutions to your challenges.

I count it a joy, not a job to serve you through WBA. Your WBA staff prays for you, and we want to be your partner in ministry, now and into the future.

Warmest Regards,

Travis Bundrick, Director

Isaiah 54:2 has been our guiding verse of scripture…“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your curtains wide, do not hold back;

lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.”

We implemented a new governing structure and created multiple sources of income options. Both of these are making us more responsive to your needs at the church level.

Our first attempts at a new communications strategy included:• Creating a new website• Embracing social media • A monthly e-newsletter, The Branch• Sending text reminders for seminars• Online giving capabilities• New information brochures• Added improvements to our building and properties to make them more user-friendly and available to our churches! (Like our WBA Café)

Over 80 times this year, your WBA staff, between preaching and speaking opportunities, church mission fairs and one-on-one conversations with interested people, have promoted the mission of WBA.

More than $15,000 has been raised in the last two years through our new development strategy. In addition, two individuals have decided to include WBA in their estate planning.

Together, we have given a half million dollars these last 10 years to plant new churches! We have added over 20 new churches during this same time frame (10 in the last four years). Over 120 professions of faith have come through these new churches in the last three years alone!

Pastor Jay Humphreys of Chisholm Trail

Cowboy Church stands at the podium in his

church’s tented sanctuary in Weir

4

A bi-vocational church planter, Jay looks every inch the cowboy in his well-worn boots, cowboy hat and bolero tie. But aside from just looking the part, Jay, who is also a rancher, is the genuine article. That’s why he was the first person the WBA approached when they were praying about planting a cowboy church in Williamson County. That was in 2010, and after praying about it himself with his wife Fayma, he agreed to take on the challenge, a first for this former cowboy preacher and missionary.

“I’d worked with the Home Mission Board and planted over 40 churches, but I’d never planted a cowboy church,” he said.

Pretty soon, Jay and his sponsor church, First Baptist Church Florence, had formed his core group of 18 and teamed up with the Sheriff’s Posse in Georgetown, which allowed the church to hold its first roping event in their arena. More than 100 people showed up for that first service.

In early 2013, the church, formerly known as the Georgetown Area Cowboy Church, was offered some land in Weir where a future building and arena could be built. They changed their name shortly after pitching their tent and began making big plans for the future.

But even amidst progress, Jay doesn’t lose sight of what attracts people to a Cowboy Church to begin with. “We are for Western culture,” he said. “It’s a very come-as-you-are environment. You can come worship with us muddy and dusty from working and it’s okay.” And that’s something Jay knows from experience.

Mission Advance is, in short, our Church Planting fund. Every month Partner churches designate funds to go into our Mission Advance budget, which is used to help support new church plants. Williamson Baptist Association believes that churches start churches. That’s why WBA works in conjunction with local churches to help plant churches, and every new church must have at least one sponsoring church that agrees to support, in some form, the church planter.

Dollars designated for the Mission Advance Fund are used entirely for church planting purposes. In addition, the WBA budget covers all administrative expenses related to church planting, and at times various state conventions in Texas have generously funded new church starts.

To learn more about our church planting process, please visit our website at www.wbatexas.org/church-planting/ to download our

Church Planting Handbook.

On a cold January afternoon, Jay Humphreys meanders through a cloud of dust kicked up by the wind as he approaches the tented area where his people meet every Sunday. He apologizes for being late. “I was bringing the cows in,” he says in his slow drawl.

Pastor Bernard Buhl of One Way Baptist

Church stands in the

sanctuary that is a far cry

from where One Way

started – in his living room.8

“I was heading to one of my last visits (as assistant to the pastor at Sweet Home Baptist Church), when I saw ahead of me a church being moved on a big flat bed truck,” Bernard said. “That’s when God said to me, ‘That’s what I want you to do.’”

Shortly after that, Bernard began worship services in his living room with just 16 people. Of those 16 people, eight joined his church. That was 18 years ago. Today, after outgrowing Bernard’s living room and two other temporary locations, One Way is going strong with over 700 members.

“If it wasn’t for the WBA, we wouldn’t be here right now,” Bernard said.

One Way teamed up with the WBA and sponsor church Forest Creek Baptist Church six months into its founding, when Bernard said he was stumbling through the process of starting his own church, growing pains and all.

“The WBA embraced us when we came in and made it possible for me to do ministry full time,” Bernard said. “They brought us in and supplemented my pay and provided guidance for us as we grew. And they continue to provide resources for us.”

As he sits back and considers the journey from where he began to now, Bernard gets a little misty.

“I’m not surprised at what God can do,” he said, “but I never anticipated all of this. We went from the pit to the palace all because of Him.”

Church Solutions is the consulting arm of the WBA. Through Church Solutions, we can help identify a need or help to deal with an existing challenge within the church. Some areas of focus include, but are not limited to accounting/financial/employment law, facilities, personality testing and team dynamics, assimilation process and disciple making, communications/marketing/public relations, and strategic planning.

Through Church Solutions, we also offer one-on-one consultations at no charge to our Partner churches, and this can be done at your location.

For a more extensive Church Solutions description, please visit us online at www.wbatexas.org/church-solutions/.

When you see Pastor Bernard Buhl, he looks just like any other pastor. You’d never guess he spent a good part of his early career at IBM before going into ministry full-time. Seeing how natural he is in the pulpit, sharp in a well-cut suit, you would also never guess that starting a church of his own was never part of his plan.

In fact, had it not been for a slow-down in traffic, he might not be where he is today.

What is Church Solutions?

9

Pastor Kyle Cheatham of Terranova Church sits in one of “the most

comfortable church seats in town.”

10

Originally launched through First Baptist Church of Georgetown, Terranova was envisioned as a separate worship service for college-aged students. But over time, as the attendees grew, Terranova evolved to meet the changing needs of its congregation.

“We started seeing our college-aged students grow into young singles and eventually into married adults with children,” said Kyle. “That’s when we realized we needed to change our worship structure.”

Terranova’s services initially were offered from 8 to 10 p.m., often followed by dinner or volleyball into the wee hours of the morning. Eventually, Kyle and his staff made the decision to go to a morning-only service, making it possible for them to take advantage of a partnership with City Lights Theatre, which had only recently opened its doors.

Started with only a dozen attendees, Terranova now boasts 250 regular attendees and only sees more growth in the future.

Through all the change, Kyle gives credit to the WBA for its continued support and guidance over the last 13 years. Once officing solely out of the WBA’s building, Terranova still continues to regularly use the space for meetings and counseling as well as utilizing office equipment and parking when needed.

“The WBA has been there from the beginning,” Kyle said. “They have walked with us through all of our changes. We don’t know what we’d do without their help and guidance. It’s an excellent resource.”

Although Terranova’s worship space is unique and comfy, Kyle considers the arrangement an asset rather than a hindrance.

“We are not a normal church,” he said. “And that’s a good thing.”

WBA is committed to developing effective leaders in its Partner churches and we have designed a balanced, intensive strategy of servant leadership development. We provide leadership training opportunities throughout the year that are designed to develop and strengthen ministers, staff and church members.

Upcoming Leadership Development opportunities can be viewed online at www.wbatexas.org/leadership-development/.

As Kyle Cheatham, Pastor of Terranova Church, reclines in one of his “pews,” he readily admits that Terranova “has the most comfortable church seats in town.” And, considering this 13-year-old church worships in Georgetown’s only movie theater, he is not exaggerating.

What is Leadership Development?
