Did you know that more than 19 percent of Indiana’s population includes adults and children with disabilities? Disability awareness is important to us all, not only
in March but throughout the year as well. Here are some suggestions for when you are conversing with an individual with disabilities.

The Arc is asking you and your friends to wear orange, take a photo, tag those in the photo, and post on social media with the hashtag #TheArcSupporter.

Music Therapy uses music to assist individuals with disabilities with nonmusical skills and behaviors such as strengthening gross motor functions, increased verbalization, enhanced interpersonal relationships, and successful emotional release. Evidence-based Music Therapy includes assessing the needs of individuals, developing and implementing treatment plans, and evaluating and documenting clinical changes.
Music Therapy services are being offered at The Arc by Amanda Mackey who is a certified, licensed Music Therapist and a recent graduate of the University of Evansville. Amanda will be offering 30 sessions per week. As the number one requested service by individuals with disabilities, Music Therapy sessions fill up quickly. Don’t delay, and contact The Arc today!
To schedule your Music Therapy sessions or to get additional information, please contact Kelly Barnett, Vice President of Adult Services, at (812) 428-4500 x378.
Kathy is working to improve cognition and enhance social skills, and she is having a blast doing it. During Music Therapy sessions, Kathy works on improving skills while singing songs from The Beatles and Elvis Presley, adding her own dance moves to a song, and using the shaker eggs to the beat of the music. Kathy is showing success in initiating appropriate conversation with others and correctly recalling personal safety information. When asked what part of Music Therapy was her favorite Kathy said, “I like music [therapy] because I like singing. Happy here.”
