Principal’s Report Education Week

Due to the scheduling of our Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations we

have chosen to celebrate Education Week outside the allotted timeframe

supplied by the DET; and what a line up of celebrations we have this year.

We kicked off Education Week with a 2 day visit by an Australian icon in the scientific world. Dr Jeanette Rothaphel, a renowned educator, scientist and Solar System expert, delighted Wauchope High School

students and students from the Bago Community Of Schools with 2 days

of engaging workshops.

This Monday the Hon Rob Oakeshott postponed his pre-election activities

to honour his commitment to officially open Education Week at our full

school assembly.

This Thursday we hosted a Grandparents Morning Tea for the

grandparents of our Year 7 students.

This Friday we will be celebrating NAIDOC week. This year is shaping up to be our best ever celebration of NAIDOC as we have an impressive and

exciting arrangement of workshops and Bush Tucker tastings. We look forward to the parents and carers of our Aboriginal students supporting us

by accepting our invitation to participate.

Next Monday we will host Gifted and Talented Primary Students from our partner Bago Community Of Schools. This event last year was a huge

success and this year we will conduct a multitude of workshops to engage

and inform students.

We will conclude Education Week celebrations next Wednesday evening

when the Bago Community Of Schools hold our inaugural BAGO Education Week Awards in the WHS Hall. During this evening, chosen students, community members, teaching and non-teaching staff from all

participating schools will be recognised for their outstanding contribution

to their school.

As you can see, our celebrations are extensive but it takes a lot to make a

good school great. Wauchope High School is a great school, we have much to celebrate and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, students and community members who contribute to helping us

keep our school great.

Construction Commences

As I write this article semi trailers are removing some of our demountable buildings, a construction site is being erected and the demolition team is

on their way.

Work to the value of several million dollars will see WHS with new, state of the art facilities for Industrial Technology, Food Technology, Performing Arts, Special Education and Senior Student Learning Facilities is

commencing. The work will be done in stages and we will be able to progressively move into the new facilities. All works are scheduled to be

completed for the start of the 2012 school year.

The health and safety of our students during the construction stage is paramount and we ask for parental support in echoing our requests for students to abide by safety signage and keep well clear of fenced off work

sites.

Cumberland Interschool Visit

The Cumberland Interschool visit was once again a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by the students who had the opportunity to represent

our school at Cumberland.

The Cumberland staff and community were once again impressed by the manner that our students conducted themselves both on and off the sporting arena. Congratulations to our team and all staff members

involved. Mr Robert Henry (Principal)

OUT WITH THE OLD, STARTING THE NEW!!

With the two demountable classrooms near B block re-

moved this week and a construction fence around the B

block itself, this old building that has delivered countless

lessons in TAS based subjects over the years, will now

be removed and replaced with a modern, efficient unit

that will incorporate the modern application of hospitality

and textiles.

Above Robert Oakeshott, Mr Bob Henry (Principal WHS)

and Mr Wil Jamieson hold the plans of what will replace

the old building B in the background.

Bago Education Week Awards

On Wednesday August 4 at 7:00pm in the Wauchope High School Hall the Bago Community of Schools will be cele-brating Education Week 2010 with awards for students, community members, administrative staff and teaching staff.

The program will feature items from the many schools in our valley including drama and dance items from Wauchope High School. It will also honour eight members of the Wau-chope High School community for their contribution to edu-cation. We invite you to join us in this local celebration of public education.

Narelle Bush On behalf of the Bago team.

NAIDOC Week

In 2010 Naidoc week was celebrated during the school holidays. We have moved our program for NAIDOC week so it is part of Education week activities. Last Friday students were able to experience Aboriginal culture

in workshops with local Aboriginal identities.

We were privileged to have Frank and Isobel Moran teach students about art and music as well as share Aboriginal artefacts. Kathy Cox and Angela

Roberts helped students experience bush tucker, whilst Steve Donovan and Uncle Bill O’Brien brought dance and storytelling to the young men and women of Wauchope High School. Our Aboriginal Education Worker

Jared Horrigan shared his personal story and talked about the them for

NAIDOC Week “unsung heroes.”

It was a wonderful way to celebrate Aboriginal culture and identity. My

thanks go to all our guests for their time and expertise.

Cumberland Interschool Visit 2010 Report

One hundred students from Wauchope High School travelled to Sydney at the end of term 2 (23-25 June) to take on Cumberland High for the Jack Parsons Memorial Shield, in an interschool visit which is now celebrating its 35th year.

Shortly after arriving and being greeted by our hosts, the competition began with Wauchope winning the Debate for the second consecutive year. . Wauchope were also successful in the Junior Netball 47-7. A dominant 10-1 victory in a shortened Open Girls Touch game was enjoyed. Wauchope then staged a great second half comeback in the Junior Boys Soccer to salvage a 2-all draw.

The games continued into the evening at the Auburn Basketball Stadium where Wauchope won both the Open Boys and Girls Volleyball 2 sets to nil.

We were also able to score great wins in both the Junior and Open Girls Basketball matches. Cumberland had some joy in the two Boys Basketball games, but Wauchope were still competitive in both.

At the end of the first day, Wauchope had established a commanding 15-5 lead in the overall points tally.

Bright and early on Thursday morning, the Open Boys Baseball team started another dominant day of competition for Wauchope with a resounding 7-0 victory. The Open Girls Hockey followed suit with a 4-0 win. .

Unfortunately, a mistake by the local council meant the Athletics could not be held, but an exhibition Mixed Touch game was put on in its place. Players representing in only one sport were invited to participate in this match, which Cumberland were able to win 5-1.

In the afternoon session, the Open Girls Netball team matched their Junior counterparts with a massive 50-11 win.

Finally, Cumberland scored their only win of the day with a convincing 5-1 victory in the Open Boys Soccer. This meant that Wauchope now had an unassailable 21-7 lead in the points tally. continues over page...

The story continues…….

Friday began with our newly-crowned North Coast Champion Open Girls Soccer team inflicting a 7-0 defeat on their rivals. The Boys and Girls Tennis teams both came from behind to win their round robin events. The Junior Boys won a great game 22-10.

Cumberland added some respectability into the final day by winning the Open Girls Softball in the final innings.

Cumberland proved too classy in a torrid and very physical Open Boys Rugby match, where they ran out 34-14 victors.

This meant that Wauchope finished as 29-11 winners in the Shield points.

At the Final Assembly, thanks were exchanged and the Most Valuable Players plaques were presented. Mrs Julie Kennedy (nee Hurrell), as both Acting Principal and a former Wauchope student, was delighted to have the opportunity to present the new Jack Parsons Memorial Shield, proudly donated by the Parsons family, to Team Captains. Mr Hancock

The Wauchope students were once again not only outstanding young sportsmen and women, but also terrific ambassadors for Wauchope High School and the entire Wauchope community. Thank you to the parents who went out of their way to help these young people enjoy and be a part of this amazing cultural tradition.
