Toledo Bend Lake is located in Louisiana and Texas on the Sabine River and forms a portion of the boundary between the two states. The reservoir is 65 miles in length and covers an area of 186,000 acres with 1,200 miles of shoreline. It is the largest man-made body of water in the South and the fifth largest in surface acres in the United States. It offers unlimited opportunities for fishing and recreational activities. Toledo Bend was named the number one bass lake in the nation by Bassmaster Magazine for two years in a row, 2015/16 and 2016/17.

FISHING – BIG FISH! While bass fishing is the most popular on Toledo Bend, other species, such as crappie, bream, white bass, stripers and catfish are in abundance. The current bass lake record is 15.33 lbs. Toledo Bend Lake attracts numerous fishing tournaments because of the abundant fishing and the well-designed facilities. Cypress Bend Park and San Miguel Park host many fishing tournaments each year. For a list of lunkers and fishing tournaments, please visit us at ToledoBendLakeCountry.com.

Celebrate Toledo Bend’s 50th Anniversary with us.

As a result of rapid industrial development and the changing demands of an evolving economy during the late 1940’s, the people of the Sabine River area, both in Texas and Louisiana, realized a need to provide for the future of the area.

In 1949, the Texas State Legislature created the Sabine River Authority of Texas, followed immediately by the Louisiana State Legislature in 1950, who created the Sabine River Authority, State of Louisiana. Together, these two bodies were given the duties of conserving and developing the waters of the Sabine River Basin for beneficial purposes.

Studies were undertaken and the results clearly indicated the feasibility of building Toledo Bend Reservoir by damming the Sabine River.

Toledo Bend is the largest man-made body of water in the South, and the fifth largest in surface acres in the United States. From the dam site, the reservoir extends 65 miles upriver and inundates land in Texas and Louisiana. It was constructed for the purposes of water supply, hydroelectric power generation, and recreation. In all, the lake normally covers an area of 186,000 acres.

Land acquisition began in 1963, with construction of the dam, power plant and spillway the next year. Following completion of the structures, the power plant began operation in early 1969. The project was dedicated in October 1969. Toledo Bend Reservoir is the only public water conservation and hydroelectric project in the nation to be undertaken without federal financing.

Twelve years of planning preceded the October 5, 1961 groundbreaking ceremonies with governors Price Daniel of Texas and Jimmy Davis of Louisiana for what is now Toledo Bend Reservoir.

El Camino Real Designated as a National Historic Trail in 2004, El Camino Real de los Tejas (Highway 6 in Louisiana and Highway 21 in Texas) has existed for more than 300 years. El Camino Real has its easternmost beginning in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and it runs from piney woods through rolling hills to the arid lands of Old Mexico. The Spaniards and the French who marked the trail were followed by such men as Moses Austin and his son Stephen Fuller Austin (the Father of Texas), Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston and early missionaries of multiple faiths. An abundance of historic sites await the modern day traveler of El Camino Real, including Fort Jesup State Historic Site. ElCaminoRealTrail.com

The Lobanillo Swales are the largest concentration of physical remnants of the road that have been found anywhere in the United States. Here you can learn all about this historical site and walk the same path that lead to the founding of Texas!

Historically speakingNo Man’s Land The Neutral Strip region, (a.k.a. No Man’s Land) draws its name from the area’s brief stint as an official buffer zone between Spain and the United States following the Louisiana Purchase. When the United States purchased the territory from France, Spain and the U.S. were in conflict over the boundary south of Natchitoches. In lieu of an armed clash to decide the new territory’s borders, both governments agreed to remove all troops from the disputed area until boundaries could be determined, and the official Neutral Strip was born.

The region’s use as an official buffer between Louisiana and Spanish Texas lasted roughly from 1806 until the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty that established the Sabine River as the territory’s western boundary. Go to VisitNoMansLand.com to learn more.
