Dear Art Educators of Washington,
It is such an honor to see that the Washington Art Education Association has grown to more than 450 new and renewing members this year! As we continue to expand in numbers, we want to make sure all of our members and potential members are aware of the many benefits WAEA offers to art educators in our beautiful state! ESD WORKSHOPS Do you need clock hours, One way to get them, is attending local workshops designed specifically for art teachers. FREE clock hours and they can help you meet professional development requirements for maintaining your teaching license plus you will connect with other art educators in your region. SUMMER ARTISTIC RENEWAL Are you ready to recharge after giving your students your all this past school year? Come to this artist retreat to learn new skills and rejuvenate your inner artist! August 5-8th in Yakima/Tieton WA. WE ADVOCATE FOR YOU Is your administrator trying to get ROTC to count as an art credit? Did your students just lose opportunities for art classes in the new schedule? These are real world scenarios that WAEA helped advocate against on behalf of art teachers this year. There is nothing quite like a phone call and letter from the Washington Art Education Association making it clear that we will do everything in our power to support art education in our schools to make administrators think twice about their choices. We are here to support you and prevent any undermining of art education in Washington’s schools. WE ARE THERE FOR YOU This year there was a school shooting in one of our small Washington towns. The WAEA was able to collect a contribution for a $500 gift card from Dick Blick to help this school’s art teacher provide meaningful art experiences to his students in the wake of this tragedy. THINK THERE IS SOMETHING WAEA CAN DO BETTER? JOIN US! WAEA is a group of fun-loving art educators working together to support the art education community. We would love to hear your ideas to make us better. I want to take a moment and invite each one of you to be involved with the WAEA board! Members and non-members alike are ALWAYS welcome to attend any membership meeting, and you can find an updated board meeting schedule on our website. Our next meeting is May 19th at the Maryhill Museum. LEADERSHIP RETREAT Ready to up your involvement with the WAEA? Come to our annual WAEA Board Retreat! This is where we do all our major planning for the upcoming school year. We want your enthusiasm and ideas to help make sure we are providing the best opportunities and support for Washington’s art teachers!
AND DON'T FORGET... THE ANNUAL FALL CONFERENCE Come join your fellow Washington Art teachers every fall at the annual WAEA conference! Discover the newest ideas in the art education field while connecting with teachers form across the state! Don't forget the ever-popular art teacher karaoke night where you can let loose with your peers after an intense day of art-making and learning! This year it’s October 5-7 in Tacoma and features keynote speaker Nancy Walkup who is the editor of School Arts Magazine.
Artistically Yours,
