NEWSLETTER OF THE WANGI WORKERS CAMERA CLUB F H

CUS CUS

WANGIFLEX

MONDAY 22nd AUGUST WORKSHOP The workshop night was on Photoshop layers, presented by Ian English. Ian described and demonstrated how his monochrome “Bedroom Scene” image was constructed. The bedroom was taken as a series of 5 HDR photographs, to get detail from the brightly lit window and from the dark area beside the bed. The HDR processing was done in Photomatix Pro 5. The model (maid) was photographed in a studio separately. Ian demonstrated that you need to be careful putting a person or object into another photo. Careful consideration has to be given to the light direction and creation of shadows etc, so that the person looks properly grounded in the finished image. The image was finally converted to monochrome with NIK Software Silver Efex.

THE NORTHERN PHOTOGRAPHIC FEDERATION COMPETITION, SYMPOSIUM and SPONSORS EXHIBITION (2016 NPF) The NPF 2016 was held over the weekend of 27th and 28th of August, at the 16Footer Sailing Club at Belmont. On Saturday morning the NPF President, Brad Le Brocque, opened the day and welcomed members and guests.

On Saturday workshops presented were:- • John Wallace from CR Kennedy on the basics of studio lighting using Bowens flash units, with

soft boxes and reflectors. • Tim Bauer talked about his experiences as a professional photographer and showed great

photos of many famous people. • Selina Simpson from Sun Studios (a Canon subsidiary) talked about printing photos. This

started with screen calibration and using the correct printer profile for the particular paper being used. The colour adjustment settings of Perceptual and Relative were discussed in some detail.

On Sunday morning the activities were:- • A presentation by Kate Garibaldi via Skype from Pennsylvania. Kate is a National Geographic &

Wildlife Photographer and leads photo tours. Kate showed some great photos e.g. Grand Tetons with wildflower foreground from an unusual location. Kate has taken photos in Alaska and Iceland. You can view Kate’s work on her web address www.torraterra.com.

• Andy Larkman, from Newcastle Photographic Institute, gave a talk on “What camera is right for me”.

• Barry Madden, from Newcastle Photography School, gave a presentation of the uses of Histograms.

• John Wallace, from Ilford, gave a talk on paper selection for inkjet printing.

• You probably all know by now as Helen sent out an email, but one of our founding members, Beryl MacPherson, died suddenly last Wednesday. Although Beryl hasn't been active for a couple of years, she asked to still receive our Hocus Focus etc. as she was still interested in the club.

• 2016 Lake Macquarie National Exhibition of Digital Photography is now open. Closing date is 21st November. Entry via a link on our club website.

• Brad welcomed guests and new members. • Asked for members who can help with raffles on Sunday 25th September to write their names

down on the list or come and see Betty Moncrieff so she can record your names. • Up Coming Events; Colleen Price spoke about:-

o On Friday 16th September the club is having an outing to Tilligerry Habitat at Tanilba Bay. If you wish to go, but haven't registered, please see our Social Secretary, Colleen Price.

o Our next club outing will be on Saturday 1st of October at Luskintyre Airport. This is free, but you may purchase lunch. Once again, please put your name down on the list or see Colleen Price.

• Brad welcomed John Farrington from the Wangi Lions Club, who is the person who is organising the Wangi Calendar that many members submitted photos for. John showed the draft calendar, with some photos from our club members and some photos from other sources. While John had the floor he also mentioned the Lions Club Gala Dinner.

• Finally Brad introduced the evenings Judge, Carol Newton. Carol’s bio:- CAROL NEWTON: I have been associated with various camera clubs for about 40 years and am presently President of Cronulla Sharks Photography Club and am also a member of The Entrance Camera Club. I have also served on the committee of the Federation of Camera Clubs NSW, was Editor of f/Stop for nearly 5 years and served two years as FCC President and led, for the first time in many years, a full committee of 10 hard working members. During my time as FCC President we held Topshot and Interclub outside the Sydney CBD. I also organised and led 5 Judging Courses 1 in Sydney and 4 others in country venues. I compete with monochrome and colour prints and projected images and tend to take architecture and landscapes but look for something different wherever I am. I enjoy seeing what and how others photograph and through judging have learned to look at my own photos more critically. I think all images and styles of photography have a place in our interesting hobby and hope my comments may give assistance and encouragement.

WWCC Social Outing -Tilligerry Habitat On Friday 16th September, 12 members from WWCC had a great day at Tilligerry Habitat, Tanilba Bay. The weather was kind to us, although less wind would have been nice as we tried to photograph the beautiful Flannel Flowers and the myriad of other wildflowers about. We didn’t get to see koalas or echidnas which was disappointing, but the boardwalk through a variety of vegetation types and along the water was lovely. The Tilligerry Habitat Volunteers cooked us a super BBQ lunch with dessert. One of the volunteers, Cathy, took some of us on a walk to show us a flannel flower carpeted bushland. An enjoyable relaxing day was had by all.
