PROVENANCE OF THE COLLECTION Two Miami University alumni from Urbana, Ohio, Gerald Stout (’52), Nick Selvaggio (’88), and Gerald’s son, Steve Stout, donated the collection to The Walter Havighurst Special Collections. ABOUT THE CRADLE OF COACHES Miami University is recognized as the “Cradle of Coaches” owing to its unrivaled success in producing coaching legends. In 1959, the moniker “Cradle of Coaches” was first used by Bob Kurz, former sports information director at Miami University, as he pondered an article he was writing concerning several past Miami players. He began to think about the many prominent collegiate and professional football coaches of the time who had all been trained through the Miami University football program. Whether tied to Miami early in their athletic careers as players or as coaches, the school has been the training ground for such athletic dignitaries as: Chester Pittser, Paul Brown, Sid Gillman, Woody Hayes, Bill Arnsparger, George Blackburn, Earl Blaik, Paul Brown, Carm Cozza, Dick Crumb, Paul Dietzel, Weeb Ewbank, Stu Holcom, Bill Mallory, John McVay, Ara Parseghian, John Pont, Bo Schembechler, Richard “Doc” Urich, and Randy Walker. Soon after the concept of the Cradle had been established, the Cradle expanded to include a formal association with bi-annual meetings, a newsletter, and a large and rapidly growing membership. The association was administered through Miami University in Oxford, Ohio—specifically, through the joint efforts of the Sports Information Office and the Miami Alumni Association. In later years, the scope of the Cradle was broadened to honor coaching greatness in other Miami athletic programs, adding to an already long list the successes of Walter Alston (baseball), Darrell Hedric (basketball), and Dick Shrider (basketball), to name but a few. The Cradle also came to include leadership and contributions made by Miami graduates in administrative athletic roles. Bob Kurz used the phrase “Cradle of Coaches” nearly 50 years ago. It caught on quickly then and is still used today when referring to Miami University athletics, particularly its football program. In paraphrasing past Cradle members, the spirit of the Cradle begins with a focus on fundamentals and a drive for excellence that is instilled into athletes by the coaches at Miami University. It is completed by the passing of that knowledge on to future athletes and coaches. SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION This collection focuses on:

• The Cradle of Coaches Association, • Cradle Members, • Cradle of Coaches Newsletter, • Sports Information Office Correspondence, and • Statistical and Historical Records.
