PASTORAL POST
Week of Prayer for Chris*an Unity, by Fr. Tony Davis
Whenever someone becomes Catholic, we o/en say, ‘they converted to
Catholicism.’ In a certain sense this is true. A good number of people who join
our Church do so out of a conversion experience. A/er encountering God, they
move from a secular life to a religious life. But in another sense, we must be
careful of how we use the word conversion. For Chris*ans, conversion is always
to God, or to Christ. It is not primarily to an organiza*on, ins*tu*on, or
denomina*on. Thus, we should be cau*ous of using the term in regards to
Chris*ans moving from one denomina*on to another. Conversion is a step
forward, not a side step.
This week, we are in the annual ‘Week of Prayer for Chris*an Unity,’ which
occurs from January 18-25. The theme for 2020 is, ‘They showed us unusual
kindness,’ a reference to Acts 28:2. In that chapter, St. Paul and his companions
were shipwrecked and found themselves on the island of Malta. St. Paul tells us
that the people of the island showed them ‘unusual kindness.’ This emphasis on
showing kindness is extremely appropriate today as our world becomes more
confronta*onal, opinionated, and flat out hateful. Kindness has the ability to
bring about unity, even in the most difficult situa*ons.
In the past, Roman Catholics have not been very open to Chris*an unity. This
changed rather easily and quickly at the Second Va*can Council (1962-1965). As
Fr. Yves Congar, a theological expert at the council and proponent of
ecumenism commented, “when the bishops saw that they were in agreement,
the Catholic church converted to ecumenism in a few minutes or at most a few
hours.” Unity among Chris*ans is an obvious implica*on of the Gospel. How can
a Church preach one God, one truth, and one body, while not talking to those
who share in one bap*sm?
Let us pray that as all of the Chris*an Churches convert more and more to
Christ, there may be greater convergence among them. Let us start with the
simple step of being kind to each other.

PASTORAL LETTER AGAINST RACISM
In November 2018 the Catholic bishops of the United States released a Pastoral
Leer Against Racism called, Open Wide Our Hearts. The leer is a powerful
invita*on for all the people of God to “face courageously the vice of racism . . .
reach out generously to the vic*ms of this evil, to assist the conversion needed in
those who s*ll harbor racism, and to begin to change policies and structures that
allow racism to persist.” At usccb.org/racism, you can read the en*re leer, get
new resources and find ideas for how we can respond.
