PASTORAL POST
Advent, Wrien by Fr. Tony
This weekend, we have a change in liturgical seasons. This is a sharp change- from
Ordinary Time to Advent. Our Advent wreath is now up, our liturgical color is purple, and
we enter a 4 week /me of wai/ng…wai/ng for the coming of Christ. On the evening of
December 24, our wai/ng will come to an end with the birth of Christ.
If we are honest, though, some/mes we s/ll feel a bit empty a2er Christmas comes. All
the par/es, gi2s, and decora/ng can never fully sa/sfy us. In fact, some people feel even
more lonely and isolated at Christmas /me. It can be a challenging /me of year.
The theologian Karl Rahner made the comment that perhaps our en/re lives are an
‘Eternal Advent.’ Out of all the liturgical seasons, this one in par/cular speaks to our need
for God. No maer how much ‘God’ we get, we always want more. We are never fully
sa/sfied as human beings and always long for more. Even though we will celebrate Jesus’
birth, we s/ll don’t feel like we got all of him. In his prayerful reflec/ons, ‘Encounters with
Silence,’ Rahner writes, “are you the eternal Advent? Are you He who is always s/ll to
come, but never arrives in such a way as to fulfill our expecta/ons? Are You the infinitely
distant One, who can never be reached?…any goal we reach has only one purpose: to
point beyond itself and lead us to the last goal, our end. And thus we s/ll cry: Come!”
As we enter into this season of Advent, we are entering into the season of our en/re lives.
Our en/re lives are a prayer for God to come more and more into our hearts. Even a2er
the incarna/on, the birth of Christ on Christmas, we s/ll long for the Second Coming. May
this season of Advent truly be a /me of longing. May we crave more of God, appreciate his
coming on Christmas, but always long for more. Come, Lord Jesus, un/l the end of /me!
Throughout Advent, we will be singing the same Communion refrain with verses that
reflect the week’s Gospel reading. The refrain is:
