Summit tackles heroin useBy F. AMANDA [email protected]

Rob Baumgartner, 34, recently cele-brated the one-year anniversary of hissobriety at a heroin summit organizedby state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park,in Elmhurst.

Sharing his story with a group ofpeople at the forum who were formeraddicts or had lost loved ones to theirheroin addictions, Baumgartner ex-plained to them how his addiction orig-inated from being bullied as a child, and in his search of “trying to find ac-ceptance,” drugs – not necessarily thepeople who used them – provided thatavenue for peer and self-acceptance.

“The worst part is knowing anddoing something wrong – and not car-ing,” Baumgartner said, adding his ad-diction destroyed the relationship hehad with his family and his daughter.

The forum was hosted June 20 atElmhurst College and featured socialworkers, counselors and law enforce-ment from throughout DuPage County.

According to Heroin DuPage, a web-site monitored by DuPage County Her-oin Coalition, DuPage County, at itspeak, lost 46 people between the ages of15 and 64 to heroin overdoses in 2013.In 2014, 38 died of a heroin overdose.

Conroy said her four sons each losta friend to heroin or know of someonewho died from heroin.

Felicia Andonoplas-Miceli and DonnaFoyle, who attended the summit, bothtalked about losing their college-agedsons to a heroin overdose a few years ago.

Moving forward, Miceli began theLouie Theodore Miceli Heroin Aware-

ness and Support Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on provid-ing an educational platform on heroinprevention, addiction and treatmentfor students in DuPage County, andFoyle began to work as a programmanager at Serenity House, a recoveryhome facility in Addison.

“This job has been a part of my heal-ing,” Foyle said. “It helps me believethere’s still hope out there.”

For Miceli, her foundation address-es heroin as a community problem be-cause it is going to take members of thecommunity to eliminate it.

“I knew if it could happen to my son, then it could happen to anyone,” Miceli

said, adding as a parent, she carried“guilt and shame” because of what herson had done to their family and, mostimportantly, to himself.

Baumgartner, who is now a clientat Serenity House, is a member of thePeer Prevention Partnership programat the facility and takes the time to talkto high school students in nearby sub-urbs about opiate addiction.

His father sent him a text messageto congratulate him on his one-year so-briety, ending the message with “makegood choices” – a piece of advice “he hasalways said to me,” Baumgartner said.

He added that’s a goal he intends onkeeping this time around.

3Lombard firefighters receive award for baby deliveryBy AIMEE BARROWS

[email protected]

LOMBARD – Everything happenedso fast for Joanna Koppang that shewasn’t able to properly thank the sixLombard firefighters who safely de-livered her daughter in an ambulanceacross from the Lombard Metra stationin January.

But the Wheaton resident got herchance to do just that June 18, whenshe presented the men with a StorkAward.

“It was nice to present them withthat,” Koppang said. “I was glad to beable to thank them and show my ap-preciation in person. I told them theydid a great job, and they told me I dida great job.”

Koppang and her family awardedthe men with the pink stork pin at aLombard Village Board meeting June18. Recipients included firefightersTim Hillesheim, John Studnicka, DaleFarris, Joe Kaforski, Galen Cardottand Lt. Tony Sally.

Sally said his men deserved the hon-or.

“They were able to keep cool in astressful situation that most of themhad never been in,” he said. “Whenthey do something like that, you needto reward them. When something goodlike this happens, you let them knowthey did it well. I want them to be rec-ognized.”

Sally said all Lombard firefightersare trained as paramedics, so he wasconfident they would be able to handlethe delivery.

“This was one of those calls whereyou know your training pays off andyou’re doing something good,” he said.

This was the first time Studnickadelivered a baby, but he said he wasn’tnervous.

“Everyone felt comfortable doingit because we have training on laborand birth at least once a year,” he said.“Everything went well; the baby washealthy. So we couldn’t ask for any-thing different.”

Farris said it was a “great experi-ence” for him. It also was his first time

helping with a birth.“Most of the time we’re able to get

the mom to a hospital before the birth, but this one happened so fast that therewasn’t enough time to be nervous,” hesaid. “But getting the stork pin mademe feel great, just knowing I was partof a birth.”

Koppang was at her job in Chicagoon Jan. 7 when she started to feel someslight contractions. She decided to takethe train home and told her husband tomeet her at the Wheaton train station totake her to Central DuPage Hospital inWinfield. But the baby had other plans.

“My water broke near the Elmhurststop, and my contractions were getting

stronger and closer together,” she said.“I was so embarrassed. The train con-ductor called 911 and told them to bewaiting for me at the Lombard stop.”

She was able to get off the train andinto the back of the ambulance just inthe nick of time.

“I was in shock; I didn’t know whatto think,” she said of delivering thebaby in an ambulance. “I knew I didn’thave a choice. I wasn’t really scaredbecause the paramedics reassured me,and they seemed confident.”

Once her daughter, her secondchild, was born without complications, they were able to bypass the emergen-cy room and go straight to the mom

and baby unit at Good Samaritan Hos-pital in Downers Grove.

“The doctor checked us both, andwe were fine, so after that, it was anormal, standard recovery,” she said.“They were so professional and did afantastic job. I’m so grateful they werethere waiting or else my husbandwould’ve delivered the baby.”

Sally said delivering the baby andgetting the Stork Award are significantevents for the firefighters.

“We don’t get to choose our calls, but when you get to be involved in apositive call like that ... it’s prettyneat,” he said. “It was a big night forthe firefighters to receive that award.”

Higher Learning Commission to reschedule accreditation reviewBy EVAN SHIELDS

[email protected]

A review of the College of DuPage’saccreditation has been delayed afterthe Higher Learning Commission post-poned a trip to the school scheduled forJune 29 and 30.

The postponement was announcedJune 28 and was attributed to JacksonCollege President Daniel Phelan’s can-cellation of his involvement with theCollege of DuPage accreditation review, according to a school news release.

The college’s acting interim presi-dent, Joseph Collins, said in the release

the visit is expected to be rescheduledabout a month from the original dates.

“While we are disappointed thatthere will be a delay, we understandthe HLC’s desire to ensure that theteam members are suited to give us anhonest evaluation,” he said.

The Board of Trustees was sched-uled to meet June 29 to have a discus-sion related to the commission’s reviewprocess, but that meeting was canceled.

In a blog post June 27, Edgar CountyWatchdogs stated Phelan was a “clone”of College of DuPage President RobertBreuder, who was placed on adminis-trative leave in April.

In the post, the watchdog groupstated Phelan has received a vote of noconfidence from Jackson’s faculty as-sociation and has been criticized forlavishly spending money on wine andfood. Similar complaints have beenlodged against Breuder.

Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamil-ton, a vocal opponent of Breuder, saidin the release that Phelan’s decision toopt out of the review process will setthe standard for who will review theschool’s accreditation.

“Based on this occurrence, we willinsist on closely examining the back-grounds of all potential HLC reviewers

to ensure a proper assessment of the col-lege that protects all of the educationalwork done by our faculty and students,on behalf of our taxpayers,” she said.

Higher Learning CommissionPublic Information Officer JohnHausaman did not immediately returnmultiple calls seeking comment on thereview’s postponement.

The college received a letter May 5from the commission on its accredita-tion being placed under review. Thecommission cited investigations relat-ed to institutional finance and ethicsviolations as being among the reasonsfor the review.

College officials weigh future of Waterleaf RestaurantBy NATHAN LURZ

[email protected]

The on-campus Waterleaf Restau-rant at College of DuPage may undergosome drastic changes in the near future.

The 6,000-square-foot upscale estab-lishment in the school’s Culinary &Hospitality Center has come under firein recent months for costing the col-lege more than $530,000 in operationseach year since it opened in October2011 and being the site of controversialmeals for trustees.

Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamil-ton said the restaurant represents a“financial drain” for the school.

“We’re really interested in redirect-ing where the Waterleaf is going, andso a thought-out analysis … is very im-portant,” she said.

Trustee Charles Bernstein led acommittee to examine the future of therestaurant, delivering its findings atthe board’s June 25 meeting before staffoffered options for Waterleaf’s future.

Currently, students staff the frontand back of the restaurant Monday andTuesday nights, while Waterleaf oper-

ates as a professional restaurant therest of the week.

Bernstein said the school’s expan-sion to a full restaurant came at the be-hest of President Robert Breuder, whonow is on administrative leave.

“From everything I’ve been ableto determine, Waterleaf existed, wascreated, exists today, because of oneman,” he said. “It was the dream andthe ambition of one man, one man whowanted a Michelin star. It had and hasno educational role.”

Staff presented three options forchange at Waterleaf: convert the diningarea to three small classrooms, open therestaurant to lessees and events, and re-purpose the space as an academic lab.

A staff report stated repurposingthe dining area and bar as classrooms– including removal of finishes andpartitions, as well as ductwork andelectric work – would run $378,400 to$516,000. Adding two classrooms in thekitchen area would bring the total toabout $1 million to $1.3 million.

However, Dean for Business andTechnology Donna Stewart said the ad-ditional classroom space would not add

much value to the college’s curriculum.Ellen Roberts, director of business

affairs, said school food service provid-er Sodexo is not interested in taking thespace because of its poor location forfoot traffic and the provider’s disinter-est in a high end restaurant, buildinginvestments and the negative publicitysurrounding Waterleaf’s finances.

She said the space turns down aboutfive events each month because of lack ofavailability and could be used for moreconferences. She also said populationand employment in DuPage County aretrending upward – a good financial signfor restaurants – and that the collegecould generate revenue by renting Water-leaf’s space to another restaurant for use.

Stewart said culinary and hospital-ity faculty were “erupting” with possi-bilities for curricula using Waterleaf’sfacilities. Given the opportunity, facul-ty and outside advisers would look atimplementing a variety of new classesas early as spring 2016 to take advan-tage of the real-world feel of the space.

She said Waterleaf is a valuable rep-resentation of a professional kitchen andrestaurant, and its fare could be better

tailored to fit curriculum options andmake it more accessible for the commu-nity. Should the opportunity present it-self, Stewart said, she is open to havingmore catering and full restaurant nights.

Tim Meyer, one of the school’s cu-linary program coordinators, said stu-dents love the experience of working inthe kitchen and faculty likely could han-dle day-to-day operations at Waterleaf, possibly eliminating several positions.

“It gives great opportunities – whenstudents are in the kitchen, it’s a verytight space, they have to stay orga-nized,” he said. “It forces them to dothings that they normally have to do inthe industry.”

Multiple residents expressed sup-port for increased student involvementat Waterleaf during public comment, and the board seemed in favor of addi-tional curricula.

“This sounds like a really wonder-ful option for the Waterleaf,” trusteeDianne McGuire said. “We are reallyexcited about it.”

The board will take a formal votein the future on the next steps for therestaurant.

The mighty struggle underway over theIllinois state budget is eerily similar to thegame of chess. The comparison is both aptand sad.

The opponents are the entrenched Demo-crats, led by House Speaker Michael Madi-gan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus first-year Gov. Bruce Rauner and theminority Republicans. They represent thekings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks onthe chess board.

And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans?Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in thegreat budgetary battle, join the club.

In chess, pawns are manipulated toadvance the interests of the major pieces.Pawns don’t matter much in the grandscheme of things. They are routinely im-periled and sacrificed to benefit the morepowerful chess pieces.

Likewise, in the budget battle, averagecitizens are manipulated to advance theinterests of the politicians. If the public isimperiled by budgetary proposals and brink-manship, it’s no real concern to the leader-ship class.

The object of chess is to use one’s intelli-gence and experience to defeat the opponent.

The same goes for politics, which unfor-tunately carries over into governance, andwhich is the crux of the budget battle: Willthe state continue to live beyond its means,or not?

The budget approved by the Democratswould spend $3 billion to $4 billion more thanit takes in. Democratic leaders did that onpurpose to pressure Rauner to approve tax

increases to cover the difference. For his part, Rauner doesn’t like the

chronic overspending, vetoed most of thebudget June 25, and awaits the arrival ofDemocrats at the bargaining table to negoti-ate for what he wants: some “pro-business”legislation and structural reforms to govern-ment that would weaken Democrats’ stran-glehold on power.

He previously announced more than $800million in temporary cuts that are set to kickin with the new fiscal year that starts thisweek.

What are the pawns’ roles in all of this?Average Illinoisans have spoken up abouthow proposed budget cuts would negativelyaffect them. Some have done so on their own;others have been trotted out by politicians.Either way, their stories are compelling.

Senior citizens, the poor, those withphysical and mental disabilities and otherswho rely on state funding are imperiled. Theuncertainty is difficult to bear.

In chess, pawns do have one golden op-portunity to triumph. If a pawn can advanceto the end of the board, it wins a powerfulpromotion and gains great influence. Theopposing player tries to stop that from hap-pening at all costs.

In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisansmust put politicians in check and exert theircombined influence to demand that fiscalprudence and the best interests of the peoplebe part of the new budget.

For politicians who just don’t get it, thepublic can deal with them at next election.

Checkmate.

Advocates help breakthe cycle of violence

Ten-year-old Aaron didn’t know why he wet the bed at night, but he was terrified of what his father would do if he found out.

During weekend visitations, Aaron’s father had put his son,a diabetic, in charge of monitoring his own blood sugar. Theyoung boy would sometimesforget – resulting in thebed-wetting incidents. WhenAaron returned home fromseeing his father one week-end, his mother saw bruises. The next day, she met withthe court advocates at Family Shelter Service.

Located in a space provided by the county on the court-house’s second floor, Family Shelter Service court advocatesassist people who are seeking an order of protection. They mayinclude victims of elder abuse, people terrorized by a formerpartner or even parents applying on behalf of their teen whofound themselves in a violent dating relationship. Becausemany of the people we help are traumatized by their experi-ence, the process of obtaining an order of protection can bedaunting.

For Aaron’s mother, the most important thing in her lifewas her son and his health. She knew his well-being dependedon what she did next. When they appeared in court, the judgeasked the child to speak on his own behalf and his motherwhispered to him to be strong. Through tears, Aaron told thejudge he loved his dad but didn’t feel comfortable with himalone. The judge decreed the father would only be permittedsupervised visits at the DuPage County Family Center inWheaton.

After the order of protection was granted, Aaron’s mothertold us having a Family Shelter Service court advocate by herside was the only thing that kept her going. Several monthslater, she reported Aaron’s health had improved significantlyand his blood sugar had been consistently level for the firsttime.

Last year, our court advocates helped more than 1,000 peopleapply for orders of protection. Today, thousands of adults andchildren are safer because of the free, confidential assistancethey received at Family Shelter Service, where we help peopleaffected by domestic abuse rebuild their lives. If you know some-one who may need our services, please refer them to our hotlineat 630-469-5650. We all would like to see an end to interpersonalviolence, so we invite everyone to engage in the effort. Moreinformation can be found at www.familyshelterservice.org.

EYE SAFETY ATWORKEach day, approximately 2,000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury thatrequires medical treatment. The majority of these injuries result from small particlesor objects striking or abrading the eye. To guard against these preventable injuries, workers should wear safety eyewear whenever there is any chance that machinesor operations present the hazard of chemicals, flying objects, or other potentiallyharmful situations. Industrial-thickness glass, plastic, and polycarbonate lenses meetor exceed the requirements of the eye protection standard. While glass lenses providegood scratch resistance and can accommodate a broad range of prescriptions, polycarbonate lenses are lighter in weight and are superior to glass and many otherplastics in terms of strength and impact resistance.Safety glasses may have prescription lenses or non-prescription lenses. The opticalboutique at SKOWRON EYE CARE is available to accommodate all of your eyewearneeds. We offer the latest in frame styles and lens technology at competitive pricesand can provide the thinnest, lightest, most smudge and scratch resistant lenses tofit almost any style frame you desire. We’re invested in the technology to make examfindings easier and more accurate from toddlers to seniors. At Skowron Eye Care, ourmission is your vision.P.S. Protective eyewear should be selected for its appropriateness for a given task.

Constitutional America is erodingThe American experiment as a constitu-

tional republic has endured for nearly 225years. It was a good run and now it’s end-ing. All three branches of our governmentare now writing law. The Congress is theonly branch constitutionally charged withthe responsibility of law writing. But thepresident claims to be able to do it witha phone and a pen, as he put it. And theSupreme Court has already rewritten“Obamacare” twice and gotten awaywith it. And if that’s not enough to do usin, when President Hillary takes over, herfamily foundation will be in position tosell what’s left of a once proud nation’sproperty and honor.

Teachers’ compensation hasan impact on pension crisisIt’s amazing how numbers can be ma-

nipulated to support one’s point of view.Despite what the teachers union andcurrent/former teachers say about teach-ers being underpaid, it’s just not true.Of course, whenever you start a newjob with limited experience, you start atthe lower end of the pay scale. No one isquestioning average starting salaries forteachers. What is out of line is the totalcompensation package for Illinois teach-ers, which has had a huge impact on thepension crisis facing the state of Illinois.

In 2012, the average teacher salary inIllinois was almost $70,000. In additionto generous vacation time, guaranteedpension benefits and retiree health plans, they only have to work about 38 weeks ayear. That’s one-fifth less than a full-timeemployee in the private sector. Underper-forming teachers are almost impossibleto fire since tenure is typically grantedafter only four years. How many of youwish you had that type of job securityand compensation package?

Share road with bicyclistsI commute to work on my

Ihappily take that route becausethe other three-quarters I amforced to share the road withmotorists who feel my exis-tence in their world is an insultto them. I follow the rules ofthe road and yet I have angrydrivers try and run me over. Thelaw says share the road. I willshare it with you. Will you shareit with me?

Global warming is not‘settled science’The idea of man-caused global

warming is often presented assome sort of scientific consen-sus. We even see the usage ofthe term “settled science” asthough no more questioningis to be tolerated. ... the veryconcept of “settled science”is strange and contradictsthe nature of science, whichinvites questioning of so-calledestablished knowledge andrecognizes that all conclusionshave a probability that they arewrong. To treat an explanationas perfect and absolute is tomove into the field of faith andreligion. Science is not revealedtruth presided over by the al-mighty. But, it is a very humanprocess that invites criticismand continual challenge.

Teachers not scapegoatsThis is in response to the

caller titled “We need Raunerto be a dictator.” This callerclearly has not done his/her homework. The averageteacher salary is not morethan $100,000 per year. It

saddens me and is extremelydisheartening that teachershave become the scapegoatfor the mismanagement ofour retirement fund. Teacherscontribute a significant portionof their salary to the retirementfund and it should remain inthe teachers pension fund.Unfortunately, the teacherspension fund is used for otherthings, other than what it wasintended to be. Let’s also keepat the forefront that teachersare educating the future of ourcountry and work very hardto establish that goal, there-fore, should have the highestpriority.

Bankruptcy is inevitableWe all know that Illinois

is broke, but unfortunatelyour legislature refuses to cutspending and balance thebudget. I’m afraid the governorwill need to take this state intobankruptcy so that responsiblespending can be imposed onall of us by a judge. Yes, it willbe painful, but it looks like thisis the only way to make Illinoisstrong again.

North Elmhurst hasflooding problems, tooIn the last few years, Elmhurst

has made the news as one ofthe worst flooded areas everytime we get extensive rain. The paper is filled with articlesabout how the city will resolvethese issues on the south sideof town. There is talk of relief... , home buyout programsand more town meetings. Myquestion is, what will be donefor the homes north of [Inter-state] 290? Lake Street andEmroy become a parking lot asthe side streets become swim-ming pools. Our homes floodas much, if not more, as otherareas, and yet there is no planin place that I have read aboutto alleviate the problem on thenorth side of town.

More local flavor neededat Rotary GroveFestMy husband and I went to

the Downers Grove RotaryGroveFest, and we were a littledisappointed in the event. Thecraft fair was very minuscule, the food vendors were horribly

priced and there was only onelocal restaurant available forpurchase. I really think we needsome more local people to beincluded in the food area, sowe can taste a bit of DownersGrove instead of these expen-sive items. A family cannot gothere and buy lunch, which is ashame because it should be afamily affair.

Favoritism occurringin Downers Grove? There seems to be two-tier

residency in Downers Grove. The high tier are the folks whoget what they want, such asthe residents of Clyde Estates. They didn’t want a sidewalkand they didn’t get one, nowthey are questioning the kindof road they will get. Theresidents of the 7400 blockof Webster Street didn’t wanta sidewalk either. Our treeswere cut down, our front lawnsdownsized and we were givena sidewalk. We received a letterstating it is the Village Council’sdirection to have a sidewalkon at least one side of everystreet in town. I’ve sent lettersto Village Hall to our mayor’sattention, questioning thisand nobody cares to respond.Perhaps we are the lower tier ofresidents.

Stop killing squirrelsI would like to explain to the

hunters in the northeast area ofWestmont that there is no squir-rel hunting season. [Recently]I found three dead squirrelswithin 20 feet of each other near... Blackhawk Drive. All wereshot on the ground with obviouswounds and blood loss. We wereout of town when the killingsoccurred, but days earlier I heardwhat I am sure was a gunshotcoming from approximately thesoutheast. A week later, whilewe were gone, my neighborheard a total of seven shotsfrom the same approximatedirection. This is likely when thesquirrels were killed. We enjoywatching the birds and wildlifein our backyard, including thesquirrels, of which there are nowfar fewer. It’s a shame there aresuch individuals among us, butwe will watch more closely inthe future.

Piscataway, N.J. – The Chicago Red Starsdefended their spot at the top of the NWSL tablewith a commanding 3-0 away win over Sky BlueFC on Sunday night. Vanessa DiBernardo, Jen Hoyand Alyssa Mautz all scored for Chicago, with Hoyadding an assist on Mautz’ second-half tally. Thematch also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-oldHuerta and outstanding play by defender AbbyErceg, who made her return to the Red Stars line-up after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFAWomen’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper MicheleDalton earned her third clean sheet of the seasonbehind an all-around solid performance. The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth min-ute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the leftand battled to maintain possession before smartlycentering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidesteppedgoalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the openingstrike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to levelthe score a mere four minutes later, but ShawnaGordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the areawent just over the frame. After three brilliant defensive plays in a row byChicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back wasin the right spot again to block a 21st-minute crossfrom the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. How-ever, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, whonearly put away the opportunity with a left-footedattempt that rattled the crossbar. The home side had another chance to tie thematch at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle wasin on goal off a beautiful through ball from deepinside her own half, only to have Red Stars outsideback Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide. While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg andSamantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managedto get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide ofthe far post from the left side of the area.In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponentspay dearly for the missed opportunities with abeautiful combination play doubling the lead forHead Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon tookfull advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huertadown the center, and the rookie sensation unself-ishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-infrom the mouth of the goal.

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the rightfoot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nad-im through on goal, but Red Stars keeper MicheleDalton left her feet for an exceptional block onthe powerful driven effort. That set the stage forChicago to increase their lead just after the hourmark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attackfound Hoy entering the box with time on herhands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shotthat took a slight deflection and trickled inside theleft upright. In the 66th minute of the competition, Huertanearly added a fourth for her squad when sheexploited some indecisive defending by toe-pok-ing the ball away from Maya Hayes and tookunleashed a shot on frame to force a diving stopby Cameron.Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc inthe closing stages of the match, dribbling past twodefenders on the left side of the box and firingfrom close range, only for Cameron to produce apoint-blank reaction save. The rebound fell intothe path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt ongoal forced another diving save from the Sky BlueFC goalkeeper.Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty areawhistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, herteammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what wouldhave been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year.On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, thestriker tracked back to meet the ball near the edgeof the box and smashed it off the crossbar by wayof a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the finalopportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for itsfifth victory of 2015.The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look tomake it consecutive wins when they travel totake on Houston Dash on July 12. The team’snext home game is a July 18 meeting withBoston Breakers at Benedictine University in Lisle.Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 RedStars campaign may be purchased by calling773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com/tickets.

VILLA PARK – A knockon some eateries is that theyoffer so many menu items, the cooking staff can neverreally master any of them. It’sprecisely the opposite at BabaKaram.

With a focus on MiddleEastern fare, the restaurantin Villa Park keeps the menusimple, and, in the process, has clearly perfected its craft.

I stopped by Baba Karamon a recent evening with adining companion. Hungry forsome protein, I was hankeringfor something with beef orchicken.

But first, to whet our appe-tite, we started with a hum-mus appetizer. The smooth, tasty dip, based on chickpeasand tahini sauce, was filledwith flavor, and made theaccompanying pita breaddisappear quickly. Our serverasked if we needed more pita, but it turned out that the por-tions matched up perfectly.

For our entrees, we bothzeroed in on the main sec-tion of the menu: the kabobs.Chicken, ground beef, lambshank and a few differentpreparations of filet mignonwere offered.

I went for the one labeled“barg,” described as thinlysliced filet mignon marinatedin saffron and spice. My com-panion opted for the bonelesschicken, similarly marinatedin saffron. We both ordered thedill rice; the other sides avail-able were white rice and shi-razi salad. The latter featurescucumber, tomato and onionin a dressing of olive oil, blackpepper, lime juice and mint.

I definitely had myhankering for some meatfulfilled, and then some. Thefilet mignon was as deliciousand tender as I expected, andI probably wolfed it downquicker than is strictly ac-ceptable for a nice restaurant.Fortunately for me, my diningcompanion loved her chickenkabob but couldn’t finish theserving, so I got to sample asizable portion of that entree, too. As terrific as the bargkabob was, I think the chicken

might have been even better, really capturing the flavor ofthe saffron and bursting withjuices.

Featuring an attractiveinterior, Baba Karam is in oneof Villa Park’s several com-mercial districts on St. CharlesRoad. The ambiance is relaxed, with gentle Middle Easternmusic playing, and an atten-tive staff that never lets yourcup stay empty for too long.

There are a number ofother appetizers offered inaddition to the hummus, and

several salads available, too.But for sure, kabobs are theprimary attraction. Unless

you’re a vegetarian, it wouldbe a shame to leave the restau-rant without trying one.

Darling: It’s been crazy since we’vewon. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like

going to Wrigley Field and going to seeMumford & Sons. And now this is myday to share the cup with my home-town and with my family and friends.

Once it all winds down a little bit, Ican relax and just reflect, maybe turnmy phone off for a few days and enjoyit for a little bit.

What’s the last year been like?Darling: The whole year, from start to

finish, like I’ve said before, it was suchan honor to sign with the team and I wasthrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs. Then to get the opportunity with Chica-go and to have a role in the playoffs andwinning the cup, it’s been unbelievable.

To get to bring the cup back to Lemont, how special is that?

Darling: This is where I spent alot of my life, these are the streetswhere I use to ride my bike. To seehow excited the people are, it meansa lot. I never forgot where I camefrom. I call this home, I always havemy whole life. I played Little Leaguehere, I played for the Lemont Indi-ans. I was [just like] those kids outthere, and to see them all here, it’sexciting.

I’ve had my opportunity with thecup last week with the team. This isa great opportunity to share it witheveryone else.

How did your new tattoo of the StanleyCup come about?

Darling: I’m a fan of tattoos. I alwayswanted an excuse to get a StanleyCup tattoo and now I have a greatone.

What is your mindset heading into nextseason?
