Thank you for welcoming me into this community. It was even more important, considering I had no friends or family around to support me. Thank you for the kind words, for the hugs, and for the encouragement. Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for listening to sermons, for visit-ing me at coffee shops, and for allowing me into your homes and your lives. Thank you for accepting me when I made mistakes, for being gracious as I learned and grew, and for celebrating my victories along with me. This last year has been challenging and diffi-cult, surprising, wonderful, and helpful. It has been so delightful to get to know all of you and being able to actually work in minis-try, rather than only study it. My last Sunday on August 21st. If you are wondering what is next for me, I will be returning home to Minnesota, where I will spend time with friends and family. In October, I have my final interview with my home synod, and then from there, I will start looking for calls. I will miss you all and this place so much as I return home to Minnesota, but I can’t help but be excited for the year the next intern will have because I know it will be one filled with grace and kindness, as you all are. As I leave, I wish you all the best. May you continue to be a great community in which future interns can grow and learn, and may you continue to love and support these new leaders as they begin their ministries. Be well, Carrie

Outreach

Red Wagon Spotlight:

Federal Way Day Center

On Sunday, August 14th, our Red Wagon will roll for the Federal Way Day Center. The Day Center is scheduled to open in August, Monday through Friday with hours from 10 to 3. The Day Center will provide showers & laundry facilities, sack lunches and healthy snacks, assist homeless military veterans in obtaining services, assess mental health needs and help arrange for counseling and medication services when needed. They will also offer referrals for assistance with independent living needs and self-sufficiency, provide computers and counsel for job seekers, provide a mailing address, and social and emotional support. The Day Center is an important resource which will serve a vulnerable population, while minimizing the impact of homeless individuals on libraries, malls, and emergency rooms. In addition, the Day Center will support human dignity and provide HOPE. It is operated by Catholic Community Services of King County and supported by the City of Federal Way, as well as local churches, groups, and individuals. They are in need of:

Plastic stacking drinking glasses (medium size)

Everyday flatware (Note: They need 40 sets. Try Deseret Industries, Target, or the Dollar Store.)

Ground coffee

Tea, sugar, & creamer

Thank you for considering a donation towards the Day Center. Monetary donation will be forwarded to the Day Center to facilitate the purchase of these needed items.

Blessings & Peace,

Marcly Curtis

“In 1983, a brutal civil war broke out in Sudan between the North and the South over religion and resources,

leaving villages destroyed by northern government armies and militia.

By 1987, thousands of orphaned children began to flee on foot across sub-Saharan Africa, walking as many as thousands of miles to Ethiopia and then Kenya. Thirteen years later, 3600 refugees would be relocated to the U.S.A.

They were known simply as ‘The Lost Boys of Sudan.’

This film is inspired by their story.” [opening of movie]

“After their village is destroyed and their parents killed by Northern militia, Sudanese orphans

Theo, his siblings and other survivors make a difficult journey to a refugee camp in Kenya. Thir-

teen years later, the group gets the chance to settle in the U.S. They are met in Kansas by Carrie

Davis (Reese Witherspoon), who has been charged with finding them jobs. However, seeing how

adrift they are in 20th-century America, Carrie endeavors to help them in rebuilding their shattered

lives.”

Bring a snack to share and join us at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17th in the Great Room as

we watch The Good Lie. Plan to stick around for a discussion afterward.

Finance Team Report

What’s noteworthy? June’s income of $34,697 was $3,439 more than expenses. As a result, the year-to-date

deficit dropped from $4,905 at the end of May to $1,326 at the end of June.

Although June is the half-way point in the year, income and expenses through June were

both less than half of the amounts in the 2016 congregational financial plan. Specifically,

income through June totaled 45.5% of the total planned amount, while expenses totaled

45.8% of the total planned amount. Continued close monitoring of expenses will be needed

to stay at a break-even point.

If you are planning to be away in coming months, consider developing a plan to keep your

giving up to date to help avoid extreme month-to-month income deviations. Using online

giving (http://www.calvaryfw.org/online-giving.html) is one method that can be used to

help you keep your giving current when you are away. It's easy to make either a one-time

donation or to set up a recurring donation.

Thank you for your generous support to Calvary!

Did you know that the most recent, finalized Council minutes are

posted in the office each month? To facilitate access, a document link

will now also be provided in the monthly Caller e-mail.

Calvary Lutheran Church, 2415 S. 320th Street, Federal Way, WA 98003

Phone: (253) 839 - 0344, Fax: (253) 839 - 0345, www.calvary-elca.org

This year, the ELCA National Day of Service falls on the 15th anniversary of the September 11th

attacks. Calvary is partnering with Christ Lutheran Church (Federal Way) to honor our first

responders. We are formally inviting our local police, fire, and EMT services to join us at the

Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 10th.

There will be a brief ceremony of Blessing of First Responders at 11:00 A.M. We will have tokens

of appreciation for first responders. Calvary members — and the community at large — will be

able to write thank you cards to first responders. And we will have the opportunity to shake hands

with the men and women who serve our community and say, “You are a valued part of our com-

munity and we are grateful for your service.”

There will be also be a photo booth for kids. They will be able to try on real first responder gear

and get their picture taken while their parents fill out thank you cards.

We hope that everyone in the Calvary family will make plans to participate in this important event.

If you can smile and shake hands, we’ve got a job for you!

Sign-ups will be available in the Narthex and Great Room Lobby in mid-August.
