SECRETARY’S MESSAGEby Patty McGuire aka Flipper ([email protected])

It’s hard to believe that it is already the month of June and NoWACA has had its first rally of the season. Last month we met in Salem, Oregon, at Hee Hee Illahee. If I do say so myself, we put on a pretty darn good rally. Along with Terry and me, co-hosts were Ed and Diane Doern, Mary Ann and Debra Humphrey-Keever and Phil and Barb Sperl. Also giving us a big helping hand was Debra’s brother visiting from Lincoln, Nebraska, Mike Keever. A great big thank you from me to all of them.

This rally was also NoWACA’s annual membership meeting. We didn’t have a lot of business to do this year, but I will give you a quick run-down of what we did discuss. There were reports about NoWACA’s two remaining rallies this season. They will be in Clarkston, Washington, in August and Westfir, Oregon, in September. I hope to see many of you in attendance.

It was brought up that some members are not receiving the e-mails that have pertinent information, like the newsletter and rally information. There was discussion about the need and best way to update the membership roster list, including email addresses. We are sensitive to the members’ concerns about ID theft. The Executive Board will continue to discuss this issue and we will notify you when a solution has been developed.

There was one little “clink” at the rally; the theft of Terry’s brand new bike that was cable locked to the back of the coach at the time. The perp (yes I watch too much television) came into the park on a skateboard, armed with bolt cutters and with the full intent of riding a bike out. The security video at the RV park showed it took him about 42 seconds from the time he spotted the bike, to cut the cable, unwind it from the spokes of the front wheel, then ride it out the front gate. Terry thought he had done everything to keep this kind of thing from happening. He used a heavy-duty plastic wrapped cable wrapped around and through the frame and front wheel. All of that only slowed him down a bit. Well, I do have good news to report – five days after we got home from the rally Terry received a phone call from the Marion County Sherriff’s Department that his bike had been recovered and was still in excellent condition. It does, however, have a little extra stuff on it now. It seems it is now armed with a knife and some other kind of tool to help the guy do “NO GOOD”. We all know that this can happen. Do I have advice on how to keep it from happening to you? No, just protect yourself and your personal property, and take the extra steps to do so. If you are unlucky enough to experience such an event, be prepared to help the authorities by having pictures and descriptions of your property, and, of course, the serial number. Terry had all of that and was able to give that information to the sheriffs’ deputies and the Salem Police Department right away. Maybe that is in part responsible for the quick recovery.

So in closing, have a wonderful summer, hope to see you at a rally or two, and be safe.

Patty

It was great to see all of you at the Salem Rally last month. We had 30 coaches attend and I think all would agree the event was a success. The tours of the Willamette Heritage Center and the Oregon State Capitol were very informative. I toured the Museum of Mental Health as well, and would recommend this to anyone visiting the Salem area. Thanks to Terry and Patty McGuire for hosting the event. Mary Ann and I were co-hosts along with Ed and Diane Doern, and Phil and Barbara Sperl.

Mary Ann and I will be at our beach house in Lincoln City later this month. We plan to catch up with Terry and Patty McGuire who will be there as well spending a few days in their motorhome. The following week, we will camp with the Smith’s (Russ and Barbara) in Astoria. We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather at both beaches.

I presented the club’s financial status as of May 19th during the annual board meeting held in Salem. During the rally, two memberships were renewed to put our current membership at 54. The club contributed $1,035 to the costs of the Salem Rally, which is under the $1,200 allotted for the annual meeting rally. We currently have 17 signed up for the Clarkston Rally in August and 9 for the Casey RV/Westfir Rally in September. As of June 5, 2017, the cash balance is $6,569 with $880 restricted for the Clarkston Rally and $675 restricted for the Casey RV/Westfir Rally. This leaves unrestricted cash of $5,014, which is $113 less than the cash balance at the beginning of 2017.

I look forward to seeing you at one of our two rallies scheduled for later this summer.

NEWS FROM FMCAby Fred Royce ([email protected])

FMCA Governing Board Delegates will vote on whether towables can be admitted to membership at the upcoming International Convention in July. If the measure passes, members (one vote per coach) will be asked to approve changes to the FMCA Constitution. Ballots will be in the September, October and November FMCA Magazine.

Ray Baker will serve as our temporary delegate. He was elected at the May rally. I have known him for many years, and he is very familiar with FMCA matters. Since NoWACA overwhelmingly voted in favor of having towables, Ray will cast a positive vote per our wishes. He will also be voting for national officers and approving the FMCA budget.

Why change? FMCA membership has declined from a peak of 130,000 in 2004 to about 71,000 today. Lack of membership affects income and has necessitated drawing on investment funds. FMCA members are getting older with the average age currently 71. By contrast, average age of RV buyers is 48, and many are purchasing “toy-haulers”. And significantly, only 13% of the RV purchases are now motorhomes as compared to 38% in earlier times. In short, FMCA is not up to date with the interests of these younger RV purchasers. Without them coming into the organization, FMCA may just fade away.

If you have questions, drop me a line.

Until the next issue, safe travels, be well and have fun.

Fred

I promised you the recipe – here it is. This does prove that Flipper doesn’t just make pancakes.

Cheesy Tater Tot Breakfast Bake4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled1 lb. ground breakfast sausage2½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded, divided2 cups whole milk2 extra large or 3 large eggs ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper½ teaspoon onion powder1/8 tsp. (pinch) salt2 lbs frozen tater tots3 tablespoon chopped parsley/chives

In a very large skillet cook sausage on medium high heat, breaking up the meat and browning it. Once cooked through, drain and layer onto bottom of a 9” x 13” baking pan. Evenly sprinkle 2 cups of the cheese over cooked sausage.

In a large bowl, hand whisk together the milk, eggs, pepper, onion powder, and salt. Once mixed pour evenly over the cheese and sausage in baking pan. Layer top with frozen tater tots. If not baking right away, cover tightly with foil and chill in fridge until next morning. When ready to bake, set oven to 350° with rack in lower-middle position. Bake 35 minutes. Top with additional ½ cup cheese, and crumbled bacon; then bake another 5-10 minutes.

Let set for a few minutes after removing from oven, top with garnish of chopped parsley or chives.
