This is also an exciting announcement because the LSA has entered into a beautiful facil-ity, more room, at less than what we were paying for at our previous location (nothing more needs to be said about the location for anyone who has attended previous meet-ings). Don’t get us wrong, the past location served us very well, but when you are offered a trade-in on your Chevrolet Aveo, for a Cadillac, it’s a no-brainer. Thank you to Troy Councilman, Wade Fleming, who gave us the contacts to get the ball rolling. Enter any door to the Community Center. Signs will be posted for the easy to find LSA meeting room. October through December, we will meet in a beautiful fully-windowed circle room #402. Then beginning 2015, we will have our own permanent meeting room #303. These are all 1st floor meeting rooms and signage will be provided to eliminate any confusion. We look forward to seeing you at our NEW location.

PRESIDENTIAL PENNINGS—JEREMY AMEEN, CML

I would like to thank John Hohauser for presenting a small hands-on tutorial of the Mark’s push button lock. Many of us were able to erase and reprogram the demo locks. At many of the tables it was a group effort. I also would like to thank Mary Do-ver, the sales manager, from Clark Security Products in Chicago for coming to visit us. Mary also supplied the door prize gifts for the November meeting. We look forward to having Mary come

back as a presenter in the future. Holiday times spent with family and friends are memories that we will have for the rest of our lives. Having said that, I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving time with your families. Now that Thanksgiving has passed, it al-ways seems that Christmas will be here before we know it. Now starts the rush to get to all the stores to buy just the right gift for everyone on our list. Not to mention, busy stores, impossible to find parking spots, irritated sales people, and many more things we could complain about. Maybe some of the gifts we give this year are the unplanned ones like giving our parking spot to someone else, letting an older person in line before us or something thoughtful and unexpected. In my business, this is my most busy time of the year. I do not know why, but think it is because people have put off getting things done and they figure they need to get it done before the end of the year. This makes family time and parties, and holiday concerts all the more hard to get to! Let’s try not to get too busy for family, friends, and personal reflection this holiday season! We are looking forward to our annual Christmas/holiday party meeting. This year we will be doing something different, we will be having an awards banquet. We will be taking the time to recognize some “key” people in the security indus-try. Please be sure to join us for a free catered dinner, as well as a relaxed time spent with friends. Business casual dress is suggested but not necessary. We know many of you come straight from a hard busy day at work!

Happy Holidays to All, I wanted to start off with the results of the poll I conducted at the last meeting. Everyone that responded voted for Saturday classes following our monthly Thursday meetings. There was a suggestion of having a one hour class before each monthly meeting. Two members were willing to teach. A variety of topics were mentioned, most everything about Locksmithing was listed. So I will move forward with a possible class on the Saturday after our Meeting in January. We will give this a try and see how the response is. As a side note, and this is meant to be informative, not derogatory, the MAPL group is not having a December meeting, or Christmas dinner like last year. I was not there (working late) but this is what I was told. I do enjoy at-tending that groups' meeting, and Novembers was the first one I ever missed. All those MAPL folks are welcome to join LSA for our Christmas Dinner This Thursday, Hope to see you there. John Hubel sent out an email last week asking if anyone would like to donate to the dinner costs or bring a unwrapped gift for the drawing, every-one gets a gift to take home. It can be Locksmith related or not, but it should be “Guy” type stuff. Gift cards are also nice. I am bring several items as gifts and a donation to the dinner as well myself. LSA has been so good to and for me it’s my way of giving back. .....Hope to see everyone there, Be of Good Cheer, and Happy New Year. - Byron, Anne, Shannon & Bella Rose

LSA Prepares for an ALOA PRP Sitting!

This is your opportunity to show advancement. The LSA is actively taking part to give you the tools to achieve what you have already earned. By taking part in the ALOA PRP [Proficiency Registration Program], you can show your clients that you have kept up with the industry and are well qualified to handle their locksmith needs. Yes, there will be some who believe they do not need to prove themselves to anyone. Although that may be true on the surface, your credentials (CRL, CPL, CML, CPS, etc.) show much more, allowing your cli-ents to solidify their respect for you, your trade, and their completed job. The PRP testing date is Saturday, January 10, 2015, right in our own back yard. See the adjacent page for details. And visit: http://www.aloa.org/certification-and-testing/aloa-certification-testing.html Here is the list of the elective categories that may be selected according to each lock-

smith’s field of specialization or expanding knowledge. This number will vary as technology

changes. Each elective contains between twenty-five and forty questions, depending on

the subject covered. The elective categories are:

• Domestic Automotive

• Foreign Automotive

• Door Closers

• Life Safety Codes

• High Security Cylinder Servicing

• Special Application Cylinder Servicing

• Tubular Key Cylinder Servicing

• Basic Electricity

• Exit Hardware and Exit Alarms

• Keyless Mechanical Locks

• Lever Tumbler/Non-Safe Deposit Locks

• Motorcycle Locks

• Safe Combination Locks

• Safe Deposit Locks

• Time Locks

• Lockset Installation

• Advanced Master Keying

• Safe Installation

RAY’S WAYS— “BUSINESS INSURANCE & CONTRACTS”

-BY RAY S INAI, CML

I would like to share some business experience with you. I have been in the locksmith business for over thirty years. I won’t claim to be an expert by any means but sometimes it’s nice to get some input from someone who has “been around the block”. I have been around a few times. I am covered with sufficient insurance for my business; general liability, workers compensation, commercial auto coverage, inland marine (tool floater coverage) and the list goes on. You will rarely, if ever, be questioned about your insurance coverage by your residential and automotive clients. Your commercial accounts, however may ask you for certificates of insurance to protect themselves, their employees and where applicable, their tenants. In some cases, they will ask to be named on your policy as additional insured which adds to the premium of your policy. If you are currently operating without insurance coverage, I highly recommend that you change your thinking. First of all, you will never be able to service these commercial accounts that can be the “bread and butter” clients for you. They will insist upon having copies of your insurance certificates. Mainly, the reason to be in-sured is to cover your personal assets from any law suit that may be filed against you by a problem, mistake or an accident on the job. More recently I have been asked to sign contracts for some of the pro-jects that I have been awarded. No, these are not multi-million dollar pro-jects some are just a few hundred dollars. I have been asked to sign agree-ments that I really don’t understand /comprehend. I have no legal back-ground and I always have an attorney look it over. Mainly, they (the client) are covering themselves for any problems that might arise on the job. Usually the attorney confirms that I can sign the agreement, but there have been times that he has advised me NOT to sign or to “x out “a specific clause in the agreement. The most interesting part of this story is the customer usually has me proceed with the work even though I have NOT agreed with the terms of the contract. I recall one contract that was required by one of my long time customers because I reached a certain dollar amount on a project. I questioned this contract because I was never asked to sign any prior contracts after many years of do-ing business with this customer. There was some questionable content in the contract and my attorney had concerns about it. We finally settled this issue with the property manager telling me to submit two separate invoices that added up to the total job. It was silly, the contract was all about the total price, not the liability of the project. I believe that they expect most contractors / tradespeople to “just sign” the contract, not wanting to lose the job. I

think most “just sign” and hope that nothing will ever happen on the job. There was one contract that specified that if my workmanship be-came a problem and it turned into a lawsuit, I would be responsible for the lawyer fees on both sides, mine and the plaintiff. You don’t want to allow that. Lawyer fees can become outrageous and without limits, why would they try to cut costs. To sum it up, if you don’t understand what you are signing, ask someone. Speak to your insurance agent or ask a lawyer. If this proc-ess takes a few days, your customer will need to wait. They will have more respect for you if they see that you take these contracts seriously. Don’t just sign paperwork because you need the job. You can end up losing much more than you can gain. I don’t ask for legal help very

often but my attorney’s advice, along with my insurance agent, is invaluable to me. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR BUSINESS

The Gift That Keeps on Giving - Michael Trueba Jr., MPT Industries, has kept us informed over the past few months about how lubricants in our service vehicles can make a great difference. He spelled out the differences between petroleum based motor oils and total synthetic lubricants. This is Mike’s Christmas offer to two LSA members: He will send these two LSA members, FREE OF CHARGE, the MPT Thirty-K synthetic lubricant required for their next oil change. You will then be able to travel up to 9,000 miles before your next oil change. If you are an engine performance tracker, you will be invited to share your findings with the LSA at a later date. LSA Minutes—November 13th Meeting The Locksmith Security Association Meeting of November 2014 was brought to order by President Jeremy Ameen at 7:30 p.m. A special guest was Mary Dover, the Sales manager from Clark Security in Chicago. We want to ac-knowledge that Mary drove through a west Michigan snowstorm in order to attend our meeting. Other guests included Ron from Oakland University housing and Rodney, a friend of member Al Moebus. We welcomed Garrett Yankovitch and Steve Smiddy, two new members of LSA. John Hubel was the sponsor of our general membership dinner for the evening. Thank you, John. LSA is looking for numerous sponsors for the Holiday dinner next month. We are planning a similar Holiday feast as in the past; a full dinner from the same catering service. Rather than take funds from our treasury, designated for education, we would appreciate sponsors and members donate funds to help de-fray the cost to LSA. The Locksmith Security Association has had a Facebook page for a few months now. Feel free to post information or photos of jobs that may be of interest to others. We are hoping to have some short videos of jobs on our Facebook page as well. If applicable, make sure to clear it with your customer. A Locksmith Security Association sponsored PRP sitting is scheduled for January 10th, at the Wood-side Bible Church on Hoover Road in Warren, Michigan. Look elsewhere in the newsletter for more in-formation and an application form for the PRP test. Marc Dearing, our Vice President has scheduled a marketing class for May 16th with Joey D. Joey has taught some marketing classes here in the past, at the local IDN – Hardware Sales Trade show. Byron Lutes, our education chairman is hoping to put together some short seminars, instructed by our own members, each being 2 to 3 hours long on various topics. Byron knows that we have some local “talent” in our membership. If you have a specialty, let Byron know that you are interested. Secretary and Treasurers reports were presented and approved. Bill Lynk informed us of the upcoming ALOA nominations for officers. Our guest presenter was Jon Hohauser from Bockert & Associates. Jon brought a number of Marks I –Q displays for the group to have some hands-on time with. Jon gave us some programming experience with these units. Thank you, Jon. Sal Dulcamaro gave a short presentation on his invention. An installation template for the Kaba 1000 / L1000 made out of a backplate from a 1000 Kaba lock unit. Tom Szynski gave a presentation on a repair of a Larson mortise lock latch in a storm door. John Hubel had a FCL (Fellowship of Christian Locksmiths) project at the Zion Christian Church in Troy, Michigan. At this time about one- half of the project is done. We had numerous members of LSA volunteer for this project. The date to complete the project is forthcoming. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Ray Sinai, CML - LSA Secretary

Chanukah The joyous festival of Hanukkah celebrates two miracles --a great Jewish military victory and a miraculous supply of oil for the Temple. Hanukkah marks the Macabees' long-ago defeat of the much-larger Greek-Syrian army that had invaded Israel. The Macabees were just a small group of Jews led by Mattathias and his five sons, including Judah Macabee. But they organized themselves into a guerrilla army and, with God's help, proved stronger than their powerful enemy. Following the Macabees' victory, the Jews rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and, once again, were able to worship freely. Although Hanukkah celebrates a military victory, its major symbol — the Hanukkah menorah, or hanukkiah — reminds us of the miracle of the oil. As the Jews purified the Holy Temple, they found only one flask of the oil for the eternal lamp — enough to keep it burning for just one day. But a miracle occurred, and the oil lasted eight days and nights until more oil could be brought from afar. That miracle explains why we celebrate Hanukkah for eight days and also why Ha-nukkah is called the Festival of Lights. Christmas The English word "Christmas" derives from the old English Christes maesse, meaning "Christ's mass”. Christmas recognizes one of the most important milestones in a Christian’s life, perhaps second only to Easter. The fulfilling of many Old Testament prophesies such as Gen 3:15, Isa 9:6, Daniel 9:24, Mal 3:1, Mic 5:2, Num 24:17, and many other New Testament conforma-tions, leads up to Christmas, the birth of the baby Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was sent to earth, to be raised from a child, to become the Savior for mankind. His life was to become the ultimate sacrifice to pay the sin debt (Good Friday) for all who accept Him. His resurrection (Easter) would provide the legitimacy of His sacrifice. Christians have been celebrating Jesus' birth on December 25 since at least the early fourth century. The first evi-dence of its observance is in Rome in 336 AD. Happy Holidays Regardless of your religious, political, or historical position, it is difficult to deny December is one of the most festive and care-sharing months of each year. The LSA wishes each locksmith, here and afar, a wonderful and mean-ingful Chanukah and Christmas season.
