RIDDLE ME THIS! 1. What happens when a leprechaun falls into a river?

2. What type of bow cannot be tied? 3. I can fly but I have no wings. I can cry but I have no eyes.

Wherever I go, darkness follows me. What am I?

WESTSIDE 4H VALENTINE’S EVENT

On February 3, 2018, Westside 4H participated in a Valentine’s Day event. We met with other 4H groups at JoAnn Fabric to make Valentine’s Day cards. We used craft materials such as card stock, stamps, stickers, heart shaped hole punches and more! We all made different designs and wrote fun Valentine’s notes to them. After we completed the cards, they were given to elderly people at Shasta Estates. Deb, from Joann Fabric said, “This is the best turn out we’ve ever had. Everyone was polite and helped with clean up. I would love to have 4H come back again.” It was a great time, I can’t wait to do it again!

MISSING IPAD The 4-H Office is currently missing an iPad Mini, similar to the one pictured below. If anyone has seen it and would like to help it find its way home, it would be greatly appreciated. It may have gone missing as long ago as November and would have an UCCE Shasta County ID label located on the back (note, the case would have to be removed to see this). Thanks!

COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP INTERVIEWS Council scholarship interviews will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the 4-H Office. This date was chosen to avoid any conflicts with student’s Spring Break schedules and activities. Applicants will be notified with complete details, including their interview time, prior to the scheduled date. Please contact the 4-H Office with any questions.

REGISTRATION DUE (mandatory): Friday, March 9th, by 5:00 PM, online or at the 4-H Office http://ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=22747 WHEN: Friday and Saturday, March 23 & 24, 2018

WHERE: Inter-Mountain Fairgrounds, McArthur

State Recognized Categories

1. Traditional

Features garments the participant has constructed, showcasing sewing skills and the ability to coordinate an outfit. The entry must be sewn

by the member as part of the 4-H Clothing and Textiles Project, and worn by the member (not constructed for someone else). The outfit must

contain at least one constructed garment; participants are encouraged to construct additional garments to complete the outfit. (No change

from 2017)

2. Consumer Science Purchased

$40.00 limit for the entire outfit, includes shoes but not sales tax. Receipts from the current 4-H year are required for any item that is visible.

Gifts, prior purchases, and items without receipts are not eligible for this category. Receipts from yard sales, etc. may be hand written. There

is no 4-H project requirement, which means that any 4-H member may enter this category. (No change from 2017)

3. Upcycled

Take one or more existing garments and turn them into a new, different, and wearable garment. Additional fabrics, trim and supplies may be

used during the construction process. The upcycled garment must be sewn by the member as part of the 4-H Clothing & Textiles Project.

Additional upcycled and/or sewn garments are encouraged to complete the outfit. A “before” photograph showing the original garment(s) is

required. This is not an alteration such as a large dress taken in to fit a smaller person that still retains the same lines. It is where the

garment has been cut apart and remade into a new garment that looks different. The emphasis is on the transition of the garment. (No

change from 2017)

4. See It, Sew It Challenge

Have you found an outfit online or in a magazine that you would love to copy for yourself? This category is perfect for you! Start with a picture

of a new garment or outfit from a current magazine, catalog, store display or website. List the retail price if you were to purchase the garment

or outfit. Then get creative and copy it. Include the cost of your sewn garment/outfit. Use of a commercial or hand-drawn pattern is your

choice (the original picture cannot be from the pattern envelope.) The garment must be made in the Clothing and Textiles Project. The focus

of this category is copying a new garment and making it fit you. The entry should only be modified for fit, type of fabric, or color/print of fabric,

keeping it as close to the original as possible. Copying a vintage Lucille Ball dress, for example, would be in the Retro Challenge.

5. Retro/Vintage Inspired Challenge Create an outfit that is inspired by a vintage design using new fabric and notions. Vintage is 20-100 years old; so use an inspiration that is

from 1900 - 2000. The entry must state the year or period of the design and include a drawing, photo or description of the design that

inspires your outfit. At least one garment must be handmade by the member. Other garments and accessories can be handmade or

purchased but must be representational of the same era. There is no 4-H project requirement; any 4-H member may enter this category.

Ideas for sources of inspiration include but aren’t limited to: a sewing pattern that belonged to your parent, an outfit worn by your parent or

grandparent in their youth, an iconic outfit worn by someone famous like Lucille Ball, Nancy Reagan, John Wayne, or James Dean, or use one

of the new sewing patterns labeled Retro.

Ideas by eras:

20s Gangster style, flannel fabric, flapper dress (calf length straight shift), short, sleek hair, Mary Jane ankle strap shoe

It also meets your fair contract requirement to show at the Shasta District Fair. DRESS: You must dress neatly and wear clothing that allows you to safely show and tend to your animal. No open-toed shoes and no shorts. Youth dressed in inappropriate attire will be dismissed by the judges. The 4-H uniform is not required. AGE DIVISIONS: Large Animal: Junior (9-10) Intermediate (11-13) Senior (14-19) Small Animal: Primary (5-8) Junior (9-10) Intermediate (11-13) Senior (14-19) RULES: Entry forms due to the 4-H office no later than Wednesday, April 18, 2018. club person in charge of the barn before leaving the grounds! You will not receive credit for the event if you do not clean up your pen and check out with the leader in charge. Everyone must bring their own clean up tools (ie. rake, shovel, etc.).

Washing of animals at the fairgrounds is prohibited. Please wash your animal at home before coming to the field day if the weather allows.

To receive credit for participating at this field day, please remain on the grounds until the conclusion of the event. All vehicles must exit the grounds after unloading and park in the parking areas. Please do not park along the fence as vehicles will be cited. Gates will remain closed until after Round Robin awards. Please do not walk animals off grounds before Round Robin!

There may be other gates open during the day but you can plan on gate 4 being opened at 7:00 am. Once your project has been delivered to Trinity Hall or the Livestock Barns, the vehicle must be moved to the parking lots. Lot 2 is the closest and easiest for the livestock exhibitors. Thank you and Enjoy!

UCCE - S H A S TA C O U N T Y P RO G R A M N E W S What is a Fire Safe Home?

With an unseasonable warm and dry winter, it is time to think about what this coming summer may bring. It may seem far off, but if Southern California has taught us anything, it’s that catastrophic fires are now possible anytime, anywhere. Start your fire safe home review NOW so that you will be ready for home improvement projects when the weather clears in the spring and summer. While it is impossible to have a completely fireproof home, there are several steps that will harden your home against fire.

Do You Have a Noncombustible Barrier? Like a moat on a castle, a 5 foot noncombustible barrier around your home will ensure that an active flame cannot directly run up against your home. Use materials such as gravel, brick, or concrete to landscape the first five feet around your home. For any fencing that runs directly into the house, you can replace that segment with a chain-link transition.

Is there Debris on Your Roof and Gutters? Twigs and leaves on top of your roof work the same way as kindling in a fire. Debris on top of your house is easily ignited by wind-blown embers and hard to see until it is too late. Clear off debris to minimize the chances of a fire igniting in these hard to see spots.

Are your Vents Covered? While home venting is critical to preventing mildew and rot in your home, it also allows embers free passage into your crawlspace. Because fires that start in your attic crawlspace are difficult to access, they often move quickly through your home and are difficult to extinguish. To prevent this, use 1/8-inch mesh to cover vents and block embers from entering your home.

What Kind of Windows Do You Have? Windows break during fires due to the extreme temperature difference between the exposed surface and the hidden glass in the window frame. Dual-pane windows provide an additional layer of protection and also have the added benefit of improving home insulation during the summer and winter. You can further harden your home with tempered glass, which is 4x more resistant to fire than regular glass.

These are just some of the easy steps that will reduce the chance that your home will ignite and has the added benefit of giving firefighters a better chance at defending your home.
