The Voice Volume : 16 Number : 8 Month : August 2016

The feast of the Dormition or Falling-asleep of the Theotokos is celebrated

on the fifteenth of August, preceded by a two-week fast. This feast, which

is also sometimes called the Assumption, commemorates the death, res-

urrection and glorification of Christ’s mother. It proclaims that Mary has

been “assumed” by God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ in the full-

ness of her spiritual and bodily existence.

As with the nativity of the Virgin and the feast of her entrance to the tem-

ple, there are no biblical or historical sources for this feast. The Tradition

of the Church is that Mary died as all people die, not “voluntarily” as her

Son, but by the necessity of her mortal human nature which is indivisibly

bound up with the corruption of this world.

The Orthodox Church teaches that Mary is without personal sins. In the

Gospel of the feast, however, in the liturgical services and in the Dor-

mition icon, the Church proclaims as well that Mary truly needed to be

saved by Christ as all human persons are saved from the trials, sufferings

and death of this world; and that having truly died, she was raised up by

her Son as the Mother of Life and participates already in the eternal life of

paradise which is prepared and promised to all who “hear the word of God and keep it” (Lk11.27–28).

In giving birth, you preserved your virginity. In falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were trans-

lated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death (Troparion).

Neither the tomb, nor death, could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For

being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life, by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb (Kontakion).

The services of the feast repeat the main theme, that the Mother of Life has “passed over into the heavenly joy, into the di-

vine gladness and unending delight” of the Kingdom of her Son (Vesperal hymn). The Old Testament readings, as well as the

gospel readings for the Vigil and the Divine Liturgy, are exactly the same as those for the feast of the Virgin’s nativity and her

entrance into the Temple. Thus, at the Vigil we again hear Mary say: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my Spirit rejoices in

God my Savior” (Lk 1.47). At the Divine Liturgy we hear the letter to the Philippians where Saint Paul speaks of the self-

emptying of Christ who condescends to human servitude and ignoble death in order to be “highly exalted by God his Fa-

ther” (Phil 2.5–11). And once again we hear in the Gospel that Mary’s blessedness belongs to all who “hear the word of God

and keep it” (Lk 11.27–28).

Thus, the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is the celebration of the fact that all men are “highly exalted” in the bless-

edness of the victorious Christ, and that this high exaltation has already been accomplished in Mary the Theotokos. The feast

of the Dormition is the sign, the guarantee, and the celebration that Mary’s fate is, the destiny of all those of “low estate”

whose souls magnify the Lord, whose spirits rejoice in God the Savior, whose lives are totally dedicated to hearing and keep-

ing the Word of God which is given to men in Mary’s child, the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

Finally it must be stressed that, in all of the feasts of the Virgin Mother of God in the Church, the Orthodox Christians cele-

brate facts of their own lives in Christ and the Holy Spirit. What happens to Mary happens to all who imitate her holy life of

humility, obedience, and love. With her all people will be “blessed” to be “more honorable than the cherubim and beyond

compare more glorious than the seraphim” if they follow her example. All will have Christ born in them by the Holy Spirit. All

will become temples of the living God. All will share in the eternal life of His Kingdom who live the life that Mary lived.

In this sense everything that is praised and glorified in Mary is a sign of what is offered to all persons in the life of the Church.

It is for this reason that Mary, with the divine child Jesus within her, is called in the Orthodox Tradition the Image of the

Church. For the assembly of the saved is those in whom Christ dwells.

Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology

As a member of the Board of Trustees of Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology, I would like to announce the visit of its newly elected President, the Reverend Christopher Metropulos. Father Chris is no stranger to our community being the son-in-law of our be-loved Father Constantine, of blessed memory, and Presvytera Evelyn Mitsos. Last year, he was elected the 21st President of Hellenic College and seminary that educates the future clergy and Greek Orthodox leaders of our Archdiocese. A fundraising reception is planned for Saturday, September 24th at the Univer-sity Club and the next day following Divine Liturgy in our newly renovated ban-quet center. Father Chris will discuss the vision of HC-HC, the only Orthodox Christian liberal arts college-graduate school and seminary in the Western Hemisphere. There is no cost to attend either gathering, but a reminder that these are fund raising events and we ask for your voluntary generous support. For more information contact the event co-chairs, Father Bill, Gus Perdikakis, Lew Assaley or Nick L. Sarakatsannis. Gus G. Perdikakis

YOUTH MINISTRIES By: Father William Redmon

In July, the Holy Trinity–St. Nicholas youth participated in two of our summer programs: Vacation Church School (VCS), and the St. Nicholas Summer Camp.

St. Nicholas Summer Camp: This year we sent a contingent of eight to the Summer Camp. Everyone enjoyed the experience. If you have any questions about how it went, please feel free to ask Fr. William, or any of our camp-ers. It is my hope that we will continue to increase our participation in this ministry in the future. I have no doubt that, once people start hearing how fun the week was, there will be a great deal of interest in next year. Remem-ber: The more of us there are, the more fun we have!

Vacation Church School: From July 18–22, the youth of our parish came together for our Vacation Church School (VCS) program. This ministry continues to expand. Last year, throughout the course of the week, we had around 10 students. This year, we had over 25 youth participants. The theme of the week was Heroes of the Bible, and the children made hero costumes. Many thanks to Stephanie Bottomley, Presvytera Elizabeth, Nicole Richard-son, Dena Cranley and Anna Gelis for all of their help with the program.

If you have questions about any of our youth ministries, or would like to volunteer, please contact Fr. William.

OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson

We had a great luncheon on May 21. We had lamb, po-tatoes, vegetable and salad. Thank you to Alex Jonson and Jim Jonson for preparing the delicious food. Thank you to Pat Zaferes for bringing the cake in honor of the birthday of her daughter Tina. Katherine (Kay) Apostol passed away on May 13. Our sympathy to her two daughters, Barbara Cook and Karen Proffitt, and her son, George Apostol and to all of their families. She was 91 years old. May she rest in peace. We will light a candle in her memory.

As August rolls around we are all finishing up our sum-mer bucket lists and getting ready for a new school year!! The Religious Education Team (RET) wanted to send out a few reminders: Sunday Church School will start September 11th. The SCS registration deadline was July 15. ALL SCS students MUST be registered ONLINE. For many reasons, we need to have all SCS students and their contact informa-tion in the SCS database. If you have not registered your children, please do so NOW! Please email Vivian Ka-pourales, [email protected], and she will send you the link. Also, if anyone is interested in joining the Religious Edu-cation Team (RET) or helping out with SCS (ex. Nativity

The AHEPA Family had their 2016 District Convention in Hueston Woods State Park, an unusual sight for a con-vention, but one that worked perfectly for everyone. The park had many amenities not usually offered by a hotel. Calypso was well represented by three delegates and three past district governors. We received awards for the Most Charitable and the Best Relations with AHEPA. We were also able to have one of our local charities, NAMI, (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) to be voted as the District Project for the next two years. This was an accomplishment as projects are normally voted upon for only one year at a time. One of our members, Tina Kasidonis, was elected as a Daughters District Lodge representative to the Buckeye Scholar-ship Foundation. Lastly, the Calypso #13 District Schol-arship was awarded for the first time. We are looking forward to a busy fall schedule. Please save October 8 for our new and fabulous Wine Tasting. You will hear more about that in the September Voice. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about Daughters.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: After nearly two years of planning, designing, and fundraising, the Building Improvements Com-mittee is pleased to report that our renovation project started in the first week of July with interior demolition of the Multi-purpose Room and Bishop’s Walk. Cousin Construction Co. is scheduled to complete the work by the end of September this year. It will be exciting to see the construction progress during the summer. We look forward to celebrating the opening of our updated and improved Community Center. In the meantime, we will not have access to the multipurpose room during construction. Fellowship and coffee hour follow-ing the Diving Liturgy will take place in the small assembly hall. Parishioners are welcome to visit and see the construction, but please remember to check in at the Parish Office first and observe all safety requirements. The construction zone is a “hard hat area.” Please use the front building doors to enter and exit the facilities. Most of the interior doors are locked to the construction areas, but some only lock from the gym side. Please be careful with your young children and help us keep them safe through this process.

A WORD OF THANKS: We cannot adequately express our sincere gratitude to those who have pledged and donated to the Renovation Capital Campaign. Your generous support has done more than simply finance an overdue maintenance project. It has also demonstrated this parish’s faith in building for the next generation by transforming our facility with technology that was unavailable during the previous renovation a quarter century ago. The Building Improvements Committee thanks all of you for helping make this endeavor possible.

MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE: As construction proceeds, two important tasks remain. First, the Building Committee is gather-ing proposals from vendors to design and install the video projection and sound system in the Community Center. This up-grade in our technology was included in the approved project budget as a line item allowance to bring our facilities into the twenty-first century.

A CALL TO ACTION: The second task is a call to action for those who have hesitated to pledge their support for the renova-tion. You still have an opportunity to make a difference. Back in March, we had a critical milestone to raise sufficient com-mitments before signing the agreement with the contractor. We achieved that goal, but we have not yet raised the entire amount of $644,000. Our next milestone will be in September when we will close on the mortgage to help finance the con-struction costs. The Parish’s goal is to borrow less than the $350,000 amount approved by the General Assembly. Your com-mitment today will help the Parish reach that goal.

You have several options to help complete the construction. You may pledge online at: http://www.holytrinity.oh.goarch.org/donate-online/capital-campaign-pledge.

Donors can also call the Parish office at (513) 591-0030 to make a commitment, or fill out a pledge card available in the Nar-thex. It’s that simple. Now that the work has begun, let’s not miss this opportunity to update our Community Center. Thank you again everyone for supporting the Renovation Capital Campaign.

PANEGYRI 2016 by Eugene Nicholas

This year’s Panegyri was a very special one for me in many ways. First, my health was 100%, so I was able to be fully involved in all aspects of the festival. Although our leadership team was still monitoring my physical activity, they did allow me to participate in lifting and moving things. I also was able to get around the festival more and interact with the volunteers and chair people. This is always helpful in finding opportunities for improvement for next year.

This was also a special year because it was Fr. Bill’s last Panegyri as our Proistamenos. It was our honor to dedicate this year’s Panegyri to him. Fr. Bill will be retiring at the end of this year and we wish him and Presvytera Anastasia a long, happy and healthy retirement.

This year was our second year running the festival with an expanded leadership team. Once again, I found this to be an efficient and effective way to manage the issues that come up before, during and after the festival. I received many comments from parishioners and patrons complimenting us on all aspects of the festival. I heard, “your people are friendly”; “your pastries are outstanding”; “the gyros are huge”; “the lines move quickly”; “the dancing was great”; and “this is the best festival in Cincinnati!” Your hard work and effort are recognized and we should all be proud. Of course, I heard some negatives; but they were few and, where possible, will be addressed next year.

We dedicated a booth and our resources to raising money for the St. Nicholas Shrine. Although we did not achieve our goal, we did raise $3,000. We also raised awareness in the community as well as in our Parish.

Before I wrap up, I want to address our need for volunteers. First, please mark your calendar today; next year’s Pane-gyri is June 23, 24 and 25. Our Parish family has around 2,400 individuals (men, women and children). At any given time during the weekend, we need 300 to 350 volunteers to keep us running. We have all the resources we need in our Parish to run our festival. We need your commitment to join us next year and share the load of this huge under-taking. I know we had many volunteers this year who were not able to take breaks because of a shortage of volun-teers. We need everyone’s help before, during and after the festival.

Finally, it looks like the Panegyri will be a financial success as well. Although our weekend gross revenue was lower than last year, our overall gross is close. With the pre-sales, vendor revenue and weekend sales, it looks like our over-all gross is $409,000. Thank you to everyone who supported our sponsorship drive this year. We raised over $40,000 in goods, services and monetary donations. This is the first time that we have surpassed our sponsorship goal. I am still paying bills, and working on the overall expenses. The profit looks to be close to our budget for the festival and the margin looks very good. I will give a full report at the Fall General Assembly in October.

Thank you to our leadership team, all the chair people and volunteers who made our 42nd Panegyri a success!
