By Pastor Pam Stofferahn It’s hard to sum up a sabbatical in just a few words . . . especially when the sabbatical spanned over 15,000 miles travelled, 50 cities visited, 35 worship services attended (not to mention dozens of cathe- drals visited), six miles walked (on average) every single day, four months, and countless new and renewed relationships. Over a year ago, I completed a grant application that asked me to say what would make my heart sing, and I answered, “accompanying my hus- band Ken on the journey of a lifetime.” Well, my heart is singing, my brain is full, my body is strong and my faith is flying. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime. But I have to say that I’m glad to have my spirit flying and my body landed. It feels great to be back. During my sabbatical, I visited 10 countries: Canada (an airport stopover), Iceland, Scotland, England, Ger- many, Austria (just by walking over a bridge one day), France, Norway (another airport stopover), Italy, and the Netherlands. You can read about the details of those visits on my blog, travelingpator.wordpress.com, where I tried to record some of the experiences I had. The problem was we were moving so fast that I didn’t keep up; so I still have several experiences that I’ll be sharing over the coming months. I have so many sto- ries to share that you’ll have to be careful about asking me about my sabbatical . . . make sure you’ve got time to listen (and feel free to let me know if you want the “short” version). I learned so much that I feel like a student who’s just graduated from college and is ready to face the world. History and art and theater and religion came to life for me in this sabbatical in a way that they never did dur- ing my own college years. My world view has been greatly expanded and, at the same time, I’ve come to realize that the challenges and stresses we face as indi- viduals, congregations and communities are remarka- bly universal. I’ve also come to see the larger way in which God calls us in the everyday moments, no matter where we are, to serve God’s purposes . . . sometimes in amazing (and sometimes challenging ways). And I’ve been rein- forced in my understanding that nothing matters more than our relationship with God and our relationships with one another. The sabbatical has taught me again the importance of investing in my own well-being and in my relation- ships and given me the opportunity to strengthen my faith journey, my physical well-being, and my relation- ships with family and friends. I have so many people to thank for this remarkable experience: Pastor Nate for fearlessly taking the lead for four months; Dona Will for being such a brilliant administrator that nothing fell through the cracks while I was away; the entire staff for pulling a little harder in my absence (we are blessed by a truly remarkable team here); Tom Will, our council president and the entire congregation council, for their unflagging support and encouragement (I cannot begin to express my grief at losing Loretta Lashinski who was such a joyous leader for our congregation. We will not be the same without her.); Ann Marie Gere, our congregational care coordi- nator for providing exceptional care to our community in my absence; our retired pastors who graciously stepped out of retirement to lead worship for us while I was away; and all of you who serve in and support the ministry of Redeemer. In God’s hands and yours, our congregation has grown stronger in my absence. I am eager to see what we can do together, now that I’m present. I can hardly wait to get reconnected with you. Lots of things have happened while I’ve been away, so I’ve got some catching up to do. I hope you’ll take time to fill me in on what I’ve missed and catch me up on what’s going on in your life. Please call so we can set up a time to get together. Trains, Planes, Boats, Bikes, Buses, Taxis, Trams, the Autobahn, and Some Pretty Sore Feet VOLUME 15 ISSUE 6 JUNE 2015

This year's theme is "Blue Moon"!

Team members and sponsors are needed for the Re-

deemer Runners Relay for Life event. The relay will be

Friday, July 31, at South Campus, White Bear Lake

Area High School. This is the 21st relay in White Bear

Lake, which is still the state's largest relay.

We welcome adults, youth, and returning and new

members for our Redeemer Runners team. You may

sign up for the team at the web site www.wbrelay.org or

see Sue Eddy for paper registration. Team members

are requested to fundraise $100 (you will receive a t-

shirt) and to help with team activities such as selling

Luminary bags, setting up for Luminary Sunday, setting

up at South Campus the morning of the relay, and clean

up the morning after the relay, if possible.

We also welcome all cancer survivors to come to the

relay and walk the Survivor Lap together. You will get a

t-shirt at the Survivor Tent and a bag of goodies. Then,

you may come to the Redeemer Runners site and walk

the lap with other survivors from our church. The loca-

tion of our site will be in next month's Crossroads.

If you have never come to the Relay for Life, come and

check it out this year. You may come anytime between

6 PM and 6 AM. The opening ceremony is followed by

the Survivor Lap. Then, the teams are introduced and

they do a team lap. At dusk, the luminaries are lit. There

is live music, food concessions, a silent auction, locks of

love, games and speakers. Hope to see you there.

Eve: Finding Lasting Contentment in the Truth

2. Rebekah: Breaking Free of Feminine Stereotypes

3. Leah: Overcoming Rejection and Insecurity

4. Hannah: Surrendering in Waiting

Review of a Recent Library Acquisition

Book Review: The Orphaned Adult: Understanding and

Coping with Grief and Change After Death of Our Par-

ents by Alexander Levy

This book is for anyone whose parents have died. Levy

is a psychologist who not only has navigated this grief

experience but has counseled

many adults who have shared

their journey of losing their par-

ents. Among other things, he

presents the particular aspects

of grief that may be manifested

with the death of parents, the

potential impact on personal

identity, how it might affect rela-

tionships with others, and posi-

tive ways to support the grief

process. It has been rated highly by readers who have

found it validates some the wide range of emotions that

surface with this normal rite of passage of losing par-

ents. One reader stated that it was reassuring to read

that “longing for parents is healthy and okay”. You will

find it in the Grief section of the Library.

……………………………………………………………….

On behalf of the students and staff of Willow Lane Ele-

mentary School, we want to thank Redeemer Lutheran

Church for the very generous donation of $1195.00

from your trust fund. This money will be used to pur-

chase comfortable, fun furniture that encourages read-

ing and the Reading Buddy Program. We owe a great

deal of the success of the Reading Buddy program to

the strong support we have received over the years

from the Redeemer community. We are very fortunate

to have your assistance. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Chris Streiff, Principal;

Leigh Anderson, Learning Skills Teacher

activities for kids ages 0-8 at our location in White Bear Lake. We’re

seeking high school students and adults ready for a rewarding and

high-energy volunteer position. Volunteers are needed Tuesdays 6-8

PM and Wednesdays/Thursdays 5-7 PM.

Summer Tutors: Our summer Tutoring Session is scheduled for Tues-

days and Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 PM June 9-July 29. Volunteers work

one-on-one with elementary and middle school students to boost math

& reading skills and present “summer slide”. Adult and teen volunteers

welcome!

Join the “Boy’s Club”- What is the “Boy’s Club”? Over the past couple of years, Brian Adams, Gary Schroeher, Ken Haslow, Bob Leaf and Mike Lundberg have been getting together once a month to just hang out and do "guy stuff" with some of the boys who live at Solid Ground. We are look-ing to expand our group of leaders for next fall. This is mini-mal time commitment on your part and a great opportunity for the boys to connect with male role models in their communi-ty. You do not need any special talents or skills, just patience and some extra love to give to these guys. Contact Brian Adams, Gary Schroeder, or Mike Lundberg if you are inter-ested in joining us.
