A s many as 1050 players from vari-ous federations and different states thronged the KIIT university campus,

Bhubaneswar, Odisha vying for the top hon-ors in the 10th KIIT international chess fes-tival, 2017 organised by Odisha State Chess Association. The event was categorized into Category A (GM open), Category B (below 1999) and Category C (below 1600) for a hefty cash prize of Rupees twenty lakhs in total.

Now we will have a short look at the Cate-gory A event held at the Sports and Fitness Center, Campus15,KIIT University from May 26 to June 02. The outcome of the tenth and the final round clash between the visiting GM from Vietnam Hoa Duc Nguyen and the local GM Debashis Das on June 2nd was keenly watched by chess fans across the country. GM Nguyen was the sole leader with 8 points before the start of this round and the only GM from Odisha Debashis Das was close on the heels of the leader with 7.5 points. Therefore a decisive result from this table was the deciding factor for the championship. However the former had everything under control as he played the exchange slav and drew the game in 25 moves, thus winning the title clearly with 8.5 points. The champion became richer by two lakhs rupees. Curiously the Vietnamese GM tasted his only loss at the hands of Vikramjit Singh of Manipur in the third round, Thereafter Nguyen had a dream run scoring straight five victories. Debashis Das by virtue of occupying the runner up po-sition with 8 points on account of his better tie break score pocketed one lakh rupees and the Kolkota collegian GM Diptayan Ghosh

finished third. This event one of the four GM events con-ducted annually in India was sponsored by the KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. This was its 10th edition without any break and it was conducted between May 25 and June 2. With 251 players drawn from 13 national federations, the 15 GMs, 20 IMs and 1 WIM who were in the fray provided a good ground for the norm seekers. Earlier the 8 days event was formally inaugurated by Prof. A. Samanta, founder, KIIT & KIIS in a glittering opening ceremony. Category B and C were organized as the part of KIIT chess festival 2017 at the KIIT International School. A total of 375 players took part in this below 1999 rating event con-ducted from May 26 to 29. Niranjan Mocharla of Andhra Pradesh netted 9 points from ten rounds and stood clear first to carry home Rs.50000/- . In a two tie for the second place with 8.5 points Rishabh Nishad (UP) and Gaurav Das (WB) finished in that order. In the Category C event for below 1600 rating held from May 29 to June 2, in a four way tie for the title Vangala Prashant of Telengana emerged as the champion followed by Sanjib Mali (West Bengal) and Mohanty Soyamsree (Odisha). Here too the champion was award-ed Rs.50000/- as prize money. This eight days chess carnival provided a festive mood for the players who enjoyed the hospitality of the KIIT university. The organizers did a great job in transporting all the players every day from their place of stay to the tournament hall and back. On the penultimate round when it rained heavily just before the start of the game the organizers ensured the safe arrival of the

Ashwin Makwana wins title by FA Biswanath Banerjee, Chief Arbiter

When Grand Masters play, they see the logic of their opponent's moves. One's moves may be so powerful that the oth-er may not be able to stop him, but the plan behind the moves will be clear. Not so with Fischer. His moves did not make sense - at least to all the rest of us they didn't. We were playing chess, Fischer was playing something else, call it what you will. Naturally, there would come a time when we finally would understand what those moves had been about. But by then it was too late. We were dead.

Sasikiran wins Capablanca Memorial This prestigious tournament began in 1962, under the initiative of Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara to remember the third world champion José Raúl Capablanca, who won the world title in 1921 in Cuba. The first edition of this tournament, was won by the famous Don Miguel Najdorf, who we all still remember today, thanks to the famous variation of the Sicilian. And of course in more recent times the Capablanca Memorial has been won by Ivanchuk multiple times! (2005,2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016. This tournament is famous for many reasons. The main one could be that Fischer played in it. Then of course, the best names of chess, have played in such tournament and won it, here we mention a few: Smyslov (in 1964, 1965, and 1973) Viktor Korchnoi (in 1963, 1969). Sasi can be billed as the Rahul Dravid of Indian chess. The un-sung hero, Sasikiran Krishnan, is truly one of the finest chess players that India has ever produced. He has a host of achievements to his credit, and now he adds another feather to his cap by winning the 52nd Capablanca Memorial 2017 ahead of Vasily Ivanchuk.Krishnan Sasikiran was also born in Chennai, just like five-time World Champion Vishy Anand. In fact he was Anand’s second during the 2013 World Championship. He has won multiple times the Indian Championship, and many international tournaments. Sasikiran reached a peak rating of 2720 in 2012. Sasikiran in round one crushed the Polish Champion GM Piorun, in just 28 moves. and out-witted GM Shankland from USA in an opposite coloured bishop ending generally considered drawish.Shankland last year worked with Carlsen in preparation for the world championship and is one of the top grandmasters of America. Masters of the past- 77 Larry Evans

Larry Melvyn Evans (March 22, 1932 – November 15, 2010) was an American chess grandmaster, author, and journalist. He won or shared the U.S. Chess Championship five times and the U.S. Open Chess Championship four times. He wrote a long-running syndicated chess column and wrote or co-wrote more than twenty books on chess.

Evans was born in Manhattan on March 22, 1932, and learned much about the game by playing for ten cents an hour on 42nd Street in New York City, quickly becoming a rising star. At age 14, he tied for 4th–5th place in the Marshall Chess Club championship. The next year he won it outright, becoming the youngest Marshall champion at that time. He also finished equal second in the U.S. Junior Championship, which led to an article in the September 1947 issue of Chess Review. By age 18, he had won a New York State champion-ship as well as a gold medal in the Dubrovnik 1950 Chess Olympiad. In 1951, Evans first won the U.S. Championship, ahead of Samuel Reshevsky, who had tied for 3rd–4th in the 1948 World Championship match-tournament. Evans won his second championship the following year by winning a title match against Herman Steiner. He won the national championship three additional times: in 1961–62, 1967–68, and 1980, the last in a tie with Walter Browne and Larry Christiansen.

FIDE awarded Evans the titles of International Master (1952) and International Grand-master (1957). In 1956 the U.S. State Department appointed him a "chess ambassador". He won the U.S. Open Chess Championship in 1951, 1952, 1954 (he tied with Arturo Pomar but won the title on the tie-break) and tied with Walter Browne in 1971. Evans represented the U.S. in eight Chess Olympiads over a period of twenty-six years, winning gold (1950), silver (1958), and bronze (1976) medals for his play, and participating in team gold (1976) and silver (1966) medals. At his peak in October 1968 he was rated 2631 by the United States Chess Federation.

Evans had always been interested in writing as well as playing. By the age of eighteen, he had already published David Bronstein's Best Games of Chess, 1944–1949 and the Vienna International Tournament, 1922. His book New Ideas in Chess was published in 1958, and was later reprinted. He wrote or co-wrote more than 20 books on chess. He wrote the tenth edition of the important openings treatise Modern Chess Openings (1965), co-authored with editor Walter Korn. He also wrote the introductions to Fischer's My 60 Memorable Games (1969) and urged the future World Champion to publish when he had initially been reluctant to do so. Some of Evans's other books are Modern Chess Brilliancies (1970), What's The Best Move (1973), and Test Your Chess I.Q. (2001).He was inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in 1994.On November 15, 2010, Evans died in Reno, Nevada, from complications following gallbladder surgery.
