Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools
Protecting Students and Creating Teachable Moments
From the very start Metropolitan Nashville Public Schoolsrsquo decision to choose Office 365 was contingent on also using Gaggle making student access to email and files in OneDrive fully compliant with the Childrenrsquos Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
ldquoI was always in favor of students in pre-K through 12th grade having email addressesrdquo recalls Dr Kecia Ray the districtrsquos Executive Director of Learning Technology amp Library Services ldquobut not every parent is going to be responsible so somebody has to kind of play the parent With us thatrsquos Gaggle Gaggle truly has our backrdquo
On the technology side Dr Rayrsquos colleague John Williams Executive Director of Technology amp Information Services also believed that to give students access to email and other tools there needed to be a proven level of safety and security
ldquoFor me using Gaggle was a no-brainerrdquo he said ldquobut what really made Gaggle stand out for me was how painless the integration was Everything was done in a matter of days and it didnrsquot change how our students log in or how me maintain their accountsrdquo
Both Dr Ray and Mr Williams believe that many studentsrsquo first email address is from the district Combined with Microsoftrsquos Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) which provides single-sign-on access to other websites Gagglersquos Student Safety for Microsoft is providing even more benefits
Dr Ray considers any possible student situations or questionable content identified by Gaggle as a ldquoteachable momentrdquo Rather than disciplining students for their online behavior or taking privileges away the district involves school counselors to work with them and their parents on practicing good digital citizenship
Another benefit of the integration according to Mr Williams was that he didnrsquot need to dedicate any additional resources to the project ldquoYou donrsquot often get vendors that know what theyrsquore doing and make it happen like Gaggle doesrdquo he said ldquoIt was a pleasant experience from the beginningrdquo

Tech Talk How to Make Sure Students Use Strong PasswordsA strong effective password requires a necessary degree of complexity In order to make the process simpler wersquove created steps on what to do and what not do when creating strong passwords
bull Teach students to never share passwords with anyone
Itrsquos important to educate students that they should never share their passwords with anyone (except their parents) Students should never give it to friends even if theyrsquore really good friends Tell them to think of it as a locker combination
bull Make the password at least eight characters long
bull Longer passwords are harder to crack The longer the better
bull Include numbers capital letters and symbols
Have students convert some of those letters into other characters Consider using instead of an a a $ instead of an s the number 1 instead of an l or interrupting the password with an exclamation point or other symbol for no good reason Please note that $afe is not a good password but something like rdquofi$h Apple amp strngrdquo is an excellent password
For more ideas on how to assure students are using strong passwords read ldquo6 Ways to Make Sure Students Use Strong Passwordsrdquo in the Gaggle Speaks blog
