BILINGUAL EDUCATION

Valley View Independent School District (VVISD) is distinct, with its own set of

circumstances and needs. Because of this, the district has developed language

policies and educational goals specific to, and appropriate for, its population.

Since the district’s student population includes many English language learners

(ELLs), we have considered its unique language and academic needs. To meet

these academic needs, VVISD has designed a program for ELLs with the aim to:

- Help students develop grade-level academic language proficiency;

- Help all students achieve and meet high academic standards; and

- Integrate sociocultural content that is linked to learners’ ethnic

communities and to society at large.

These three overarching aims helped our schools as we developed our mission

statement and decided on a program model that meets the needs of our ELLs.

To develop a high-quality program, it is necessary to remember that language

proficiency includes both conversational and academic language. Although it is

usually easier to become fluent in conversational language, students must learn

the sociocultural nuances of the language, such as when to speak and how

formally, how to speak to children versus adults, and so on. Even when they are

in all-English classrooms, it is likely that ELLs will continue to need support in

developing proficiency in both written and spoken English.

To help English language learners achieve high academic standards, it is

important for schools to help students navigate the bridge between their home

cultures and the school cultures. Teachers and administrators foster a positive

educational climate when they show respect for students’ home cultures and use

students’ language and prior knowledge as resources to build upon.

Our academic expectations for ELLs are the same as those for native English

speakers. This means that our curriculum and instruction program is not

“watered down” for ELLs because of their limited language proficiency. Rather,

teachers use strategies that provide ELLs with the scaffolding necessary to

help them learn new concepts and achieve high standards. The instructional

strategies selected with ELLs in mind are based on a combination of language

and academic goals within the framework of established academic achievement

timelines.

académico a nivel de grado;

aprender nuevos conceptos y alcanzar altos estándares. Las estrategias educativas seleccionadas

con los ELL en mente se basan en una combinación de metas de la lengua y lo académico en el plan

de estudio académico establecido.

SUCCEED!!

MAINTENANCE & TRANSPORTATION

The TIGER Express Valley View I.S.D.

Crews have been working on paint projects, fencing, sidewalks, and parent pick-up area

at the Junior High Campus for a safe and fluent traffic flow during student drop off and pick up.

With the department’s leadership and team work, the Maintenance Department’s hard work

must not go unnoticed. Once again it iha proven that everyone pulling together-

Administration, Teachers, and the Support Services/Maintenance Department-we can make

Valley View ISD an excellent learning environment for all of our students.

SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The TIGER Express Valley View I.S.D.

On December 15, 2014, the Valley View Special Olympics Team held its annual Special Olympics

Event. In attendance was very special guest “Christmas Homer” from The Home Depot in Pharr.

Santa and his elves were also in attendance bringing joy and laughter to our students and their

parents. This festive event included lots of games, food, and fun! After competing in their events,

the students took pictures with Santa and his elves and then danced the day away to all kinds

of music. This event was a sure hit, and the smiles on the children’s faces were priceless! All

this could not have been accomplished without the help of the Valley View Boys and

Girls Athletic Department.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition

in a variety of Olympic-type sports through a Motor Activity Training Program (M.A.T.P.). The

purpose of the M.A.T.P. is to prepare athletes with severe or profound intellectual disabilities,

including athletes with significant physical disabilities, for sport-specific activities appropriate for

their abilities. The mission of the Special Olympics is to give students opportunities to develop

physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills,

and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU goes out to Coach Barbee, Adaptive P.E. Coach; Athletic Personnel Coach

Robert Segura for being the D J in the event and spreading the Christmas spirit; Coach Julio

Martinez for assisting in planning the event; trainer Jacques for being available in case of injury;

and our very own Valley View Special Education Department. It was a successful event because of

everyone involved. However what made it even more exceptional was the enjoyment and delight

of the students and their parents.

THANK YOU ALL for allowing us to have a small part in this merry event!

A ROCKIN’ CHRISTMAS

YEAR AT A GLANCE

Teamwork! Teamwork! Pays off!! The message throughout the year has

been to unite as a district and work with one another to reach our goals.

This teamwork mindset has paid off. This year the district was recognized

by TEA as one of the top 26 school districts in the state (top 4 districts in

the Valley), winner of the 2014-2015 District of Distinction Award for

College Credit Program, 2015 Magna Award for the Spanish Medical Minor

program, and recently selected as 1 of 8 finalists for the HEB Excellence in

Education Award. This is only the beginning of what is to come. Even the

Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams, called inquiring what Valley

View was doing.

Improvement throughout the year is worth noting. At the end of the

1st Six Weeks, on average each campus accumulated roughly 4,429

Accelerated Reader (AR) points. By the 2nd Six Weeks, the average AR points per campus more than

doubled to 9,843. Reading brings out an awareness of the outside world and is a very critical component

to the academic success of our students. Our students reading more and more will lead to further

success. In line with state accountability, we are also keeping track of the amount of improvement each

class has made in assessments from one six weeks to the next. There are classes that have had gains of

25 to 30 points compared to previous six weeks. Keeping track of this improvement, along with the

overall improvement of the student, class, and campus, will give us an idea of where we are and what

needs to be done to get to where we must be.

Students and staff have worked very hard this year to reach our goals. Incentives have been given to

staff to reward performance. Salaries have increased this year, and, if everything goes well, the plan

is to give another raise for the 2015-2016 school year. Campuses will also be able to cash in their

incentives at the end of the school year if they reach their goals.

If we are to be the best, we need to have the facilities to provide the best services for our students. The

beautification of the district has continued. Improvements have been completed making each campus

more welcoming. These improvements have assisted our students in building pride, dignity, and charac-

ter. It has allowed for an appreciation of our district and what it means to be a Tiger. This has a huge

impact on student learning.

All this would not have been possible without the entire staff working together. It is this belief in team-

work and the tireless hours invested by staff that will make us reach our goals. When asked by TEA

Commissioner what the reason was for our success, I answered, “ It is the willingness of our staff to go

above and beyond and work as a team to reach our goals.” Let’s keep it up, Tigers!!

VALLEY VIEW I.S.D. CELEBRATES COUNSELORS

Valley View I.S.D.

National School Counseling Week is celebrated February 2-6, 2015, to focus public attention on the

unique contribution of professional school counselors within U. S. schools. Valley View ISD is fortu-

nate to have an outstanding group of Counselors who are committed to helping our students achieve

success and plan for their future.

This year's theme, Celebrate School Counseling, highlights the contribution of professional school

counselors to the academic, career and personal/social success of our children. National School

Counseling Week focuses not only on celebrating our counselors, but on informing the public of the

tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for

a career.

Valley View ISD School Counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities,

strengths, interests and talents. Working in partnership with parents and teachers, they focus on positive

ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development.

CHILD NUTRITION HIGHLIGHTS

The TIGER Express The TIGER Express Valley View I.S.D.

Valley View ISD Central Kitchen Tours How your children eat today will have a striking impact

on their health throughout adolescence and adulthood.

Consuming nutritious foods helps children and teens grow,

develop, do well academically and feel good about themselves.

Healthy eating helps prevent child and teen issues such as

obesity and eating disorders. Valley View ISD Child Nutrition

Department is committed to ensure that our students obtain

the best possible nutritious food and nutrition education. This

is why we follow the Nutrition Standards in the National School

Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. The Child Nutrition

Department provides nutrition education to students and tours to Valley View Central Kitchen.

During a Central Kitchen tour, students get the opportunity to learn how food is prepared and

distributed to the 8 campuses. They also get a nutrition lesson on the importance of eating their school

lunch and breakfast. The lunch and breakfast menus are designed with age-grade calories that the

students need. After the tour students are excited and motivated on healthy eating, and they also get

the opportunity to eat lunch at the Central Kitchen.

Valley View’s Child Nutrition Department takes pride in serving meals that are made with fresh

products rather than processed ones. Our food service department is working hard to ensure that our

children have a “taste of home” in their meals. The food services department provides students with

opportunities to consume an array of foods throughout the school day and enables students to learn

about and practice a healthy eating behavior.

We will keep on making changes to meet the new guidelines. These changes will take some time to get

used to, but we are working on great ways to get students excited about eating healthful foods.

If your Campus is interested in a Central Kitchen Tour please contact Wualberto Rincon

Fifth Grade Campus

Valley View I.S.D.

Valley View 5th Grade Campus

Did you know that 57% of all students in U.S.

schools decide on which college to attend during their

senior year in high school? Also, most students

consider the opportunities and choices of colleges

only through information they solicit during their last

year of grade school. Valley View 5th Grade Campus

has initiated an innovative program with a new twist

to teach all students about the need to attend a

higher education institution after graduation.

As the New Year rolled out, Mr. Villagomez has

taken the initiative to teach all 5th -grade students

about the mottos and virtues that are imbedded in

Texas Colleges, specifically The University of Texas-Austin. While using the keystone character program

curriculum on a weekly basis, Mr. Villagomez puts together lessons to teach the students on topics such

as honesty, integrity, loyalty, self-control, respect, diligence, and kindness. It is important that children

are taught such virtues early in their lives so that they may become familiar and recognize that values

carry over into all walks of life. The need to expose all students to universities at a young age is also

imperative. This enables them to make proper selections in order to attain the best education possible

according to their life-long goals and expectations.

Valley View 5th Grade campus hosted its

Family Science Night January 15, 2015. The night

was full of fun and exciting hands-on STEM-based

activities for the whole family to enjoy. Students

and parents were given the opportunity to design

and launch paper bottle rockets and use their

critical thinking skills to design and construct a

special air craft that could keep an egg from

breaking when dropped from the second floor of

the campus gymnasium. Another activity was

building the tallest tower made out of toothpicks

and marshmallows that can withstand a golf ball

for ten seconds.

Fifth-grade student, Mathew Molina

exclaimed, “I had the best time ever!” Mathew and

his father designed an amazing egg craft and

became the first winners of the Egg Drop challenge

for the night. Families were engaged and

determined to solve the challenges for each

activity. A special thank you goes out to all who

attended and helped make the evening a great

success.

Ms. Haydee Castillo is a hard working 4th-Grade Teacher at Valley View

South Elementary. Ms. Castillo is always looking out for the best interest of

her students and her team. She volunteered to create graphic organizers to

help students better organize their writing ideas. She does not hesitate to

speak out on behalf of fellow 4th-grade teachers when there is a need. Even

though she is in a STAAR-tested grade level, like the other teachers in her

team, Ms. Castillo will volunteer to help out with campus evening events.

Thank you, Ms. Castillo, for going above and beyond for our

students and for Valley View South!

Ms. Erika Pesina is a very hard working employee who is always willing to

lend a helping hand during school, after school, and even from home. Ms.

Pesina is a PK Aide who has volunteered for evening events such as Friday Foot

Ball Night, Homecoming, PTO and even Walk for Success. Another co-worker

described Ms. Pesina as an extraordinary co-worker. “No matter what the

situation is, you can certainly count on her to help you out.” Ms. Pesina is

Bronze Club Excursion

At Valley View Elementary, we encourage all

students to become avid readers. There is much

that we can learn through reading, and our goal is

to instill a love of reading in our children. To entice

children to read, we offer various incentives to our

children. We recognize the “Top AR Class” for the

week at each grade level, reward and recognize the

“Top AR Class” at each grade level for the six weeks,

reward and recognize our AR Millionaires and multi-

millionaires, but the incentives that most capture our

students’ desire are the excursions at the end of each

semester. This month, members of the Accelerated

Readers (AR) Bronze Club were treated to a field trip

to the Veterans Memorial of Texas in McAllen and The Zone. To become members of the AR Bronze Club,

students must read, test, and earn a minimum of 70 points in 1st grade, 90 points in 2nd grade, 110

points in 3rd grade, and 130 points in 4th grade.

Class Earns Perfect Attendance

While it is common to have children earn perfect attendance for the entire six weeks, it is uncommon to

have an entire class earn perfect attendance the entire six weeks. One class that has achieved this

difficult feat is Ms. Guerra’s Class. Each student in Ms. Guerra’s pre-k class was present the entire third

six weeks. The class was treated to lunch and

play time at Mr. Gatti’s Pizza.

Children at Valley View Elementary are

encouraged to attend class every day. Classes

earning perfect attendance for the entire six

weeks are treated to lunch and play time at

Mr. Gatti’s.

Please encourage your children to come to school

every day!!

Kinder Classes at North went on a combined scientific and art field trip to IMAS MUSEUM in McAllen,

Texas. The field trip was sponsored by the Valley View North PTO. The students were exposed to many

different science experiments and wonderful activities.

By having hands-on workshops the students learn about distances, eye-hand coordination, color

Through the use of Socrative, an innovative student response system, the Valley View Jr. High 6th-

Grade math team has enhanced classroom culture and instruction. The use of technology through

Socrative on iPads has engaged students in daily activities and cooperative learning. Students are

eager to participate in class and welcome feedback. Weekly reviews are turned into competitions for

students to showcase their knowledge and comprehension on topics covered through “Space Race”

activities. As stated by Mr. Vizcaino, “Socrative allows us to meet our students’ learning needs

through applicable uses of technology.” When students are asked about Socrative they often say,

“Socrative helps us use technology to communicate faster and learn more easily.”

Assessing and addressing student needs and strengths are the greatest addition Socrative has

brought to our grade level team. Activities and assignments allow for immediate feedback that is

used to drive daily instruction, future lessons, and tutorials. Socrative also allows us to instantly assist

students around the room based on their specific needs. While assignments are used to measure

student mastery, they also facilitate collaborative learning arrangements.

As expressed by Ms. Palacios,

“Understanding our students’ specific strengths and

educational needs through Socrative provides us

with an unparalleled process through which to

target and affect instruction in our classrooms.”

Socrative supports a collaborative learning

environment amongst students allowing them to

reach a higher level of understanding across topics.

Cross-collaboration amongst our team also allows

for one assignment to be created and shared in

order to horizontally align our instruction, activities,

and lessons.

Basketball Team Wins Tournament

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win

championships”. Family is our motto according to Piri Damian

Gomez, guard for our seventh grade basketball team. The unity

that holds families together, their hard work, and team effort

have rewarded our basketball team with a first place win in a

tournament and a winning season so far this school year. At the

tournament held at Sharyland North Jr. High School, our mighty

Tiger team beat Mission Jr. High by a score of 36-24 and went on

to the championship game against Shary North. Their winning bout

against the Diamondbacks with a score of 49-37 sealed their title

of champions. Piri Alek Gomez, point guard and team leader, had

an outstanding performance at the tournament; he made eight

3-point shots in the championship game. The team would like to

acknowledge and praise their Coach Alfredo Salinas for his

dedication to this team. His continued guidance has steadily made

this team better, stronger, and fiercer!!

The Hispanic National Honor Society (HNHS)

The Hispanic National Honor Society is a group of Early College Campus students who excel

personally and civically. This group of 8th - and 9th -grade students is sponsored by Early College Campus

Spanish Teacher, Mrs. C. Espejo. Being a part of this prestigious organization is both an honor and a

privilege that shouldn’t be taken for granted. To be eligible for membership in the Valley View Early

College Campus Chapter of the HNHS, a student must maintain and display outstanding performance

in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character. These five criteria for selection

form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. Each member must maintain

a 92% average every six weeks and must not have any violations of the student code of conduct for the

entire school year. In addition, students are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community

service. Thus far, the organization has taken gifts made by the students to people in retirement homes,

assisted in serving/cleaning at a community Thanksgiving dinner, and with the assistance of Mr. Ezequiel

Perez, former VVISD board member who serves as the hospital’s liaison, our students visited Driscoll’s

Children’s Hospital to deliver toys to sick children in hopes of brightening up their holiday season. Later

this year, the HNHS will be visiting a nursing home in Hidalgo to play, sing and read to the elderly

patients, and they are still scheduling more events for the months to come. Being a part of this organiza-

tion offers a parallel of benefits for both the students and the community; students learn to become re-

sponsible leaders who serve their community while exemplifying a positive, courteous and enthusiastic

spirit, AND the community benefits from the service provided by this selfless group of students. The Early

College Campus students who comprise the Hispanic National Honor Society represent our campus, as

well as our district, with dignity and pride.

Band Students Advanced to Texas All-State Band

Valley View ISD will be recognized and represented at the State Level in Music. The VVHS Fine Arts

Department is very proud of its Area Competing students who competed in Alice, TX at the Area G Com-

petition on Saturday, January 10, 2015.

Gilbert is a two time award winning All-State Musician! This is a

rare accomplishment amongst music students. Only about 1% of

all Texas Music Students get to wear the badge of being a Texas

All-State Musician. Congratulations to all band directors for their

perseverance in excellence and to Valley View ISD for placing the

importance of Fine Arts in our schools. GO TIGERS!!!

Gilbert Garcia, is a sophomore at Valley View High School and this

is his fifth year in band. Gilbert plays percussion instruments,

mainly the marimba, timpani, and concert snare drum. Band has

been a pleasant experience to him ever since it was introduced

by his wonderful educator and father, Mr. Gilbert Garcia. Since

he first started until now, he has been able to participate in

several intense competitions, one known as All-Region, where you prepare 3-4 pieces of music picked by

University professors to show your musical abilities. He has been very fortunate to have placed high in

these competitions, allowing him into the All-Region Honors Band, Area G Additions, and the TMEA All

State Symphonic Band. Gilbert comments; “It has been such a pleasant experience going through these

processes since they have shaped my musical intellect through fellow peers and teachers. I highly

encourage others to join band and experience the joy it gives.”

Aldo Padilla 11th Grade on Trombone Placed 3rd Overall in Area 5A !!

Aldo Padilla, is a junior at Valley View High School and this is his sixth year in band. Aldo plays the

trombone, and when he plays it, “It just throws me into the

wind.” Aldo comments, “Being in band is something that I

really enjoy above all else, because I get to show what I can

do. The main thing about being in band is competing with

other schools because you get to make friends, and it gets

exciting to compete with them.” Aldo has many accomplish-

ments, including making it to the All-Region Band, Region

Orchestra and even going to the area auditions. His teacher,

Mr. Hess, always tries to help him to get high rankings in his

auditions. Another accomplishment was getting a gold med-

al at UIL State Solo and Ensemble. “It’s a great experience

because you get to learn from others.”

Semester course selection by offering a pilot Welding Program with emphasis on Fluxcore Welding. In

collaboration with Valley View I.S.D, the program is being offered by the McAllen Careers Institute (MCI)

and is approved by the Texas Workforce Commission Schools and Colleges and accredited by the

American Welding Society (AWS) as an Accredited Testing Facility. In operation since 2009, MCI’s

rigorous welding course prepares students for employment in careers related to welding such as

industrial fabrication, pipe fitting, pipe welding and other related areas. The program also teaches

students the various welding equipment used in the industry , equipment maintenance and how to

read blueprint layouts. Currently there are twelve seniors enrolled in the program. After the students

successfully complete the program and pass their certification examination, they will receive an AWS

certificate that is recognized nationally and internationally for employment in the field.

TIGER ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

Valley View Tigers defeated the Rio Grande City Rattlers last night 61-38

with Miguel Garcia leading the team with 18 points. The game was close

through the 1st quarter as Rio scored with back to back three-pointers.

During the 2nd quarter, Valley View’s defense was determined to extend

the lead, and so they did. We held Rio to only 2 points in the second

quarter to open up a halftime lead of 23-14. The Tigers came out a little

sluggish in the 3rd quarter as Rio yet again battled their way back into the

game cutting the lead down to 30-27 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd. After a timeout to regroup our kids,

Valley View ran the tables the rest of the game as we finished with a 31-11 run to close out the game.

Rudy Gomez filled in for his brother Rick Gomez (out with an injury) scoring 16 points. Chris Castillo

tallied in 8 points, David Ruelas 5 points, Cris Cavazos 4 points, Carlos Batiz 4 points, Carlos Limon and

Marcos Campos both with 2 points each. Valley View is now 3-4 in district and alone in 4th place for the

final playoff spot behind Edinburg Vela, Sharyland Rattlers, and Mission Veterans.

We look forward to your support at our upcoming games!!

Measles in the News: Make Sure Your Child Is Fully Immunized!

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It can be serious

for young children. Measles starts with a fever. Soon after, it causes a cough,

runny nose, and red eyes. Then a rash of tiny, red spots breaks out. It starts at the

head and spreads to the rest of the body. Measles can be very serious for young children. It can lead to

pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death.

How Measles Spreads: Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

It is so contagious that if one person has it, 90% of the people around him or her will also become

infected if they are not protected. However, since measles is still common in parts of Europe, Asia, the

Pacific, and Africa, measles is brought into the United States by people who get infected while they are

abroad. Measles spreads rapidly in communities where people are not vaccinated. Children and all the

people are at a high risk of becoming infected. That is the reason that it is very important that your

child be up-to-date with this vaccine.

.Protect your child with the measles vaccine:

You can protect your child against measles with a combination vaccine that protects against 3 diseases:

measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR, for its acronym in English). The vaccine is very effective. One dose

of the vaccine is about 93% effective at preventing measles if exposed to the virus and two doses is

about 97% effective. It has been proven that the MMR vaccine or triple viral is safe and effective. The

CDC recommends that children receive two doses:

The first dose between 12 and 15 months and

The second dose before starting school, between 4 and 6 years.

Protect your child by making sure they are up to date on all vaccinations!

For information regarding the recommended and required immunizations for adults and

children, contact any of the school nurses at Valley View ISD.

Valley View I.S.D.
