Dear Parents,
Gone are the days when the words of a parent were the ultimate, gospel truth. As times change, rapid strides in technology &
science, along with the smart phone and internet revolution have ensured that we are no longer a closed society where
parents are the omnipotent source of truth. Every action of ours, be it ritual, custom or force of habit, is now open to question,
not just by our friends and family, but also by our very own children. This is the new world, where the scope of knowledge is
infinite, therefore making established beliefs open to question and debate. Such rapid change obviously ushers in
humongous challenges, for how does one continue to maintain harmony, discipline and respect for the hierarchy in the
household? It has become a major challenge for modern day parents. Corporal punishment is a thing of the past and is in no
way acceptable by an enlightened society such as ours; therefore, reason and logic are the keys in ensuring disciplined
children, which will ultimately lead to a responsible society.
Having said that, reason and logic do not come easy, they require patience, knowledge, understanding and definitely
restraint, especially when dealing with your child. It is a battle that many parents lose out to. With busy lifestyles and long
working hours, parents hardly have the time to reason, debate and carry out meaningful dialogue with their child on anything,
be it their time spent on the use of the internet or academics. It is a constant struggle to get one's point across. Unfortunately,
most parents take the easy way out, and give in to their children's demands. The common terminology they use, is, 'the world
has changed', 'we no longer can control our children'. Parents also tend to look at the school for answers, expecting that the
school will do what they can't. As educationists, we have realised that, in an ever changing world, we need to work in tandem
with parents to guide children into becoming responsible adults.
Banning the use of the mobile, all its apps, and the internet is a lesson in futility. Do not forget that we now live in a digital
world, and the access to all of it, is at one's fingertips, therefore, the term banning, should be replaced with, restricted or
supervised usage. To implement supervised usage would mean to sacrifice some of your precious time for the benefit of your
child, as the 'The carrot and stick policy' takes both time and effort to enforce. The child must be rewarded for a good deed
and reprimanded for a bad. While punishment should not be corporal in nature, it should be meted out in other forms, such as
curtailing the use of mobiles and television time. There are various methods to achieve what is right for the child.
As stated before, the school cannot be the only stakeholder in this effort. Parents will have to realize that, this is an ongoing
effort, a 'work in progress', so to speak. Parents will have to do more than their bit, and take an active part in this effort. Not just
at home, but in the school too. There is no financial implication; all it requires is your cooperation and your time. We will need
to act in total tandem, to ensure that every child in our care, turns out to be a responsible, loving and a caring human being.
God bless you allHyacinth Emanuel
