Upcoming ALAO Workshop

Mark your calendars for the upcoming ALAO Instruction Interest Group / Ohio Immersion spring workshop. The workshop will be offered in two regions of the state this year. Attend the workshop on Thursday, May 17th at Lorain County Community College or Friday, May 18th at Raymond Walters College (University of Cincinnati). The schedule for both days will be as follows:

9:30-10:00 Registration and Continental Breakfast 10:00-12:00 Program 12:00-1:00 Lunch 1:00-2:30 Program 2:30-2:45 break 2:45-4:00 Program

The title of the workshop is "Librarian-Faculty Collaborations: The Foundation of Information Literacy". Our presenter will be Dane Ward, co-editor of "The Collaborative Imperative: Librarians and Faculty Working Together in the Information Universe (ACRL, 2000)". Mr. Ward is coordinator of instruction services in the university library at Central Michigan University. A perfect addition to our Immersion experience, this promises to be a hands-on, interactive workshop.

Registration for either workshop will be $15.00 for ALAO, OCLIS or ACRL members. The registration for non-members will be $35.00 which will include a one year membership to ALAO. A continental breakfast and lunch is included in the cost of the workshop. Registration forms have been mailed or you may download a pdf/word form which is available from the following website: http://www.alaoweb.org/comsigs/iig/

Workshop Planning Committee The IIG planning committee merged with the Ohio Immersion planning committee, the group responsible for bringing the ACRL Institute on Information Literacy to Kent State University last June. With the remaining revenue from last years' Institute, the goal is to provide more programming on Information Literacy for Ohio librarians. Since these two groups share a similar mission, it made sense to work together. The

Annual Plant Sale at Chadwick

The Chadwick Arboretum's Spring Plant Sale is fast approaching! In fact it's this next weekend, May 11 and 12! Hours for the sale are: Friday, May 11: 7:00am through 7:00pm, and Saturday, May 12: 9:00am until 5:00pm. As always, we're having our usual selection of perennials, herbs, vines, shrubs and trees, many of which are not commonly stocked by local nurseries. In addition, this year we're also carrying selections of dwarf conifers (perfect for you back yard railroad enthusiasts), alpine plants (perfect for use in trough gardens), and azaleas and rhododendrons.

This year we've created a garden store, stocked with a wonderful selection of gardening related books, circle hoes, herb wheels, gardening gloves, soil scoops, trellises, and plant penguins. And, since this next weekend is Mother's Day weekend, we're also offering gift wrapping for your

Mother's Day gifts!

As in years past, this sale is the major fundraising effort for the Arboretum, which covers over 35 acres throughout the University. The Arboretum is not a "line item" on the University's budget, so funds raised through this sale (and the Fall Plant Sale) are critically needed to purchase supplies, equipment, and provide some supplemental student staff. For more information about the sale (or the Arboretum in general, please see:

http://chadwickarboretum.osu.edu/events/psale.htm

Thanks! and I hope to see you at the sale!

Federal Grant Supports OSU Library's Latin American Collection

The US Department of Education has designated the Ohio State University Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) as a Title VI national undergraduate research center. It is the first time it has received this designation. The award entitles CLAS to almost $200,000 for the next three years, renewable for another three-year period. Of that amount, $60,000 will benefit the Latin American, Spanish, and Portuguese (LAT) Collection, housed in the Thompson (Main) Library. This additional support is enabling the LAT Collection to acquire hundreds of new monographs, microfilm, and electronic research resources.

Through Title VI, the federal government recognizes quality education in the study of foreign languages and area studies. The OSU Latin American program joins more than two dozen other major research universities in receiving such aid. The University of Texas at Austin, with 700,000 volumes, is the largest Latin American collection at an American university. The Hispanic Division at the Library of Congress, with over a million items, holds the largest Latin American collection in the US and probably the world.

OSU’s LAT Collection contains 200,000 volumes. Title VI funding increases its total annual budget to just over $100,000. The size of the collection and the increased budget now place the OSU LAT Collection at the threshold of the top tier of such libraries in the country. The collection is the largest in Ohio and a major resource on Latin America for the state.

OSU’s Title VI funds will assist both undergraduate and graduate students along with faculty and researchers in their study and publishing on Latin America. In addition the grant supports the Center’s efforts to increase activities for film programs, guest lecturers, and artistic performances. Currently the Latin American film study series presents five films per quarter.

Dr. Edward A. (Ted) Riedinger, Professor and Head of the LAT Collection, explains what benefits the grant has already meant: “We've just been able to support acquisition of a first edition (1725) of the complete works of the noted colonial Mexican writer, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz. The total cost was $6,000.00. Title VI funds covered $1,000.00. In addition, we have been able to order

almost all of the North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) microfilm collection of literature from modern popular movements. The collection reproduces thousands of pamphlets, manifestos, bulletins, newsletters, posters, chapbooks, etc. from a dozen countries in Central and South America. New CD-ROMs acquired, in the Digibis Tavares Collection from Spain, reproduce the texts of hundreds of classics of Latin American and Spanish literature and history.”

Prof. Riedinger is a specialist on Brazil who has written extensively on that country and been a Fulbright Scholar there. He was secretary to Pres. Juscelino Kubistchek, the builder of Brasília. According to Riedinger, these new acquisitions fill in many gaps in library holdings for modern and colonial Latin America.

The Title VI funding is “a key asset for strengthening Latin American research resources at OSU and in the state. Mexico is the second largest trade partner of Ohio. Brazil, Chile, and Argentina are rapidly growing partners. Brazil manufactured planes, from the Embraer Company, increasingly fly out of the Columbus airport. Last year OSU mounted the largest commemoration by an American university of the five hundredth anniversary of the discovery of Brazil, bringing the Brazilian Ambassador to the US to campus, conferring with the governor and mayor regarding trade matters.”

Together with other parts of Main Library, the Latin American Library Collection has also been refurbished. To accent the collection's character, Prof. Ted Riedinger, the head of the collection, is mounting small exhibits that demonstrate aspects of the region's culture. One exhibit shows the work of noted Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi, who was of Inca descent. Another exhibit displays reproductions of prints of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Ted plans additional exhibits, with small sculptures and craft works.
