But always be sure not to say it in ink.” - Anonymous • History holds the possibility that there may be two different men considered to be the “real” Saint Valentine, and both were supposedly beheaded on February 14. The more commonly accepted legend identifies St. Valentine as a priest in early Rome around the year 260 A.D. The Roman emperor at that time forbade his soldiers to marry because he believed that single men made better soldiers. In the name of love and in defiance of the emperor’s edict, St. Valentine discreetly married numerous soldiers and their ladies in secret ceremonies. The king eventually found out about it, and Valentine paid the price for his deeds at the guillotine. • Tradition places the first written Valentine letter around 1415, when the Duke of Orléans, a Frenchman, was captured in battle and imprisoned in the Tower of London. From his lonely quarters there he composed rhymed love letters, which he had messengers carry to his wife. • In England during the 1700s, women wrote men’s HEARTFELT FACTS ABOUT

● It was 20th-century American critic John Leonard who made the follow-ing sage observation: “To be capable of embarrassment is the beginning of moral consciousness. Honor grows from qualms.”

● You’ve probably never heard of the Spanish village of Lijar, located in the south of that country. This village, though, was involved in a nearly 100-year war that lasted well into the 20th century. It seems that in 1883, Alfonso XII, the king of Spain, made a state visit to Paris and received a less-than-royal welcome. Led by mayor Don Miguel Garcia Saez, the citizens of Lijar, after hearing that their monarch had been in-sulted and possibly accosted by mobs, declared war on France. Though there were no casualties -- not even any gun-fire -- the war lasted until 1981. That was when the town council ruled that it would end hostilities with France thanks to the warm welcome King Juan Carlos of Spain received in France in 1976.

● The town of Adamant, Vermont, was once named Sodom. The townspeople voted to change the name in 1905.

● The first portable computer was made available to the public in 1975. In this in-stance, however, “portable” was used as a relative term; the IBM 5100 weighed 55 pounds.

● Only 5 percent of American men report that they feel satisfied with their looks. With women, it’s only 1 percent.

● In 2008, a study was conducted in the United Kingdom to determine what, if any, effect the consumption of toma-toes had on the human body’s reaction to sun exposure. The university students enrolled in the study who consumed the equivalent of about five tomatoes per day were 33 percent less likely to get sunburned than those who ate no toma-toes. *** Thought for the Day: “Several ex-cuses are always less convincing than one.” -- Aldous Huxley

Q: I was watching an old episode of “Dexter” from season one and was thrilled to see Tony Goldwyn as a guest star that episode. What has he been doing lately? I know he’s done a lot of behind-the-scenes work, but I’d love to see his handsome face on screen soon. -- Ginger F., Madison, Wisc.

A: Well, you won’t have to wait too long, Ginger, because Tony is one of the stars of the new ABC drama “Scandal.” The show centers on Ol-ivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington), a former communi-cations director to the president of the United States (Tony Goldwyn), who left the White House to open her own prominent crisis-management firm. She’s hoping to start a new chapter in her life -- both professionally and personally -- but she can’t seem to completely cut ties with her past. “Scandal” premieres Thursday, April 5, at

10 p.m. ET. With the show’s creator and executive producer being Shonda Rhimes, who also is behind the powerhouse series “Grey’s Anatomy,” you can bet there will be plenty of edge-of-your-seat drama to keep you coming back each week. ***

Q: I know you’ve mentioned this be-fore, and every now and then I hear teases about it, but are they ever going to make a “24” movie? -- Gerry D., via e-mail

A: Jack Bauer himself, Kiefer Sutherland, told reporters at a Television Critics Association press event about the planned movie: “Hopefully we’ll begin shooting at the end of April, beginning of May.” So, while that’s about all the details anyone can offer at this point, at least it’s something, and if we cross our fingers, maybe this movie will see the light of day by fall 2012 or early 2013. ***

Q: Are the rumors of a Van Halen re-union true? If so, is it with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar as the frontman? -- Steve V., Akron, Ohio

A: Those rumors are not rumors, Steve. They are cold, hard facts: Van Halen, with David Lee Roth, is back with a new album and upcoming tour. The album is called “A Different Kind of Truth” and will be released Feb. 7, with the debut single, “Tat-too” already getting airplay. The band starts touring Feb. 18, so check online to see when they are com-ing to your town. Hopefully they’ll stay friendly with each other long enough to complete the tour this time. ***

Q: I’m hoping that History Channel’s “Top Shot” be back again for another season. Do you know if there are any plans in the works

to keep this one going? -- Jeremy W., via e-mail

A: You’re in luck. The History Channel recently announced that its top-rated competition series hosted by Colby Donaldson will be back for a fourth season starting Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 10 p.m. ET. The show promises more twists and history-in-spired challenges than ever before. But unless your lady is into the show, I’d suggest taking her out to dinner for Valentine’s Day and DVR-ing the show to watch once she’s gone.

Grocery Sticker Shock Have you seen the price of hamburger late-ly? During the past year, the price of beef has sky-rocketed, with that made-at-home burger costing 10 percent more than it did a year ago. The Economic Research Service arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture keeps track of fore-casts, and it’s taken a close look at 2011. We know it costs more to feed our families, but just how bad has it gotten? As a general rule, food prices go up 2.9 per-cent each year. In 2011 the average increase was a whopping 4.5 percent, and where it got us in the wallet was in the staples. A pork chop costs 6.9 percent more than it did a year ago. A chicken leg costs 10.5 percent more. Eggs are up 10.2 percent. Cheese up 8.4 per-cent. Turkey up 10.5 percent. Milk up 9.8 percent. Even potatoes soared by 12 percent. Cereals, on the other hand, went up only 6.2 percent. Is it any wonder people are feeding their kids cereal for dinner? Supply and demand is given as the reason: More of us are sticking to basics, which pushes up the demand, which pushes up the price. The things we’re not buying -- steaks, for example -- didn’t see much of a price increase because there wasn’t much of a demand. The USDA predicts that food prices for 2012 will “only” go up 3 percent to 4 percent, which still is above the long-term average. How to survive until prices come down? Here are some ideas: --Shop the ads. This is no time to be loyal. If another nearby store has a special, go there. Stock up within reason. --Use your customer store cards to take ad-vantage any loyalty discounts they offer.

--Consider investing in a big box “club” membership. Be aware that the food comes in large bulk sizes and be prepared to split the costs with a friend. Divide and freeze meal-size portions. If you don’t have a freezer, barter with a friend to share the bounty in exchange for freezer space. --Study nutrition. Learn how to combine cheaper protein sources, such as beans and rice. Get creative with pasta. Go online and check out www.eatingwell.com and put “cheap” in the search box. Try www.cheapcooking.com and other simi-lar sites.

VALENTINE BITS (from page page 3)

Supermarket Tricks That Makes Us Spend More I’ve always thought of myself as pretty sharp when it comes to spotting supermarket trickery. I’m not even fazed by an end-cap display announcing, “Special.” I know their ways. They hope we’ll just as-sume that “special” means “super cheap sale.” But we’re so much smarter than that. Which is why I was taken aback by a recent article by our friends over at TLC Discovery Channel. They revealed ways that grocery stores trick us into spending more -- ways that I’ve never considered. Some of these really made me stop and think. 1. TVs at checkout lines. I have not seen this yet, but I hear it’s coming. The trick is to distract us from the checkout scanner while exposing us to product ads for items that are coincidentally within easy reach, or that we’ll encounter on our next shop-ping trip. 2. Rearranging the store. There’s a reason they do this: To get you out of your routine so you’ll wander into new areas and notice (and buy) things you never saw before. While searching for what you need, you’re apt to toss a few new things into your cart that you hadn’t planned. Gotcha! 3. Strategic placement. There’s a psychol-ogy in the way stores are laid out. Milk, bread and eggs (common items) are located miles from one an-

other, and in the back of the store. They know you’ll have to traverse from front to back and one end to the other. That increases the likelihood you’ll buy more things than you had planned. Gotcha again! 4. Pricey things at eye level. Human nature says, apparently, that humans are more likely to pick up things at eye level than when placed higher or lower. So where do they put the most expensive op-tions? Bingo! Did you know manufacturers actually pay a premium to have their items placed at eye level? Good reason for this. It works! 5. Unit pricing. It’s a good thing that stores now have labels showing the per-ounce or per-pint price, right? Sure, as long as all of the options are broken down in the same way. But what happens when ice cream is shown as per ounce for one brand, per gram for another, and per pint for anoth-er? Close to impossible to compare unless you carry a conversion table with you. The trick is to get us to grab the brand at eye level. Sounding familiar? 6. Diluting liquids. Items like liquid laundry detergent, cleaners and fruit juices can be difficult to price compare. While one brand may be priced cheaper than its name-brand competitor, it may be watered down considerably and therefore cheaper. Become a label reader to avoid getting tricked! 7. Grouping complementary items. You have tortilla chips on your list, but not fresh gourmet salsa, sour cream and grated premium cheese. But hey, they just happened to be arranged so beautifully right there with the chips, so why not? Or you grab the sale-priced eggs, but then see the hash browns, milk and premium brand English muffins right in the same bin. How thoughtful. The only problem: All those accessories are full-priced. Yet another tricky way the store gets you to spend more than intended.

The Writing on the Wall Sometimes it’s hard to see the writing on the wall. We’re too close to a situation to prioritize, make decisions and set boundaries. The following letters are from readers who stare at the writing on their wall and see only hieroglyphics. Sammo: “My girlfriend and I recently adopted Sammo, her parents’ 9-year-old Shar-Pei. He had become too much for them to handle and her father was ready to put Sammo down after he bit his wife -- twice. We decided to adopt him since we did not see signs of aggression toward people during our time with him. “At a recent checkup, Sammo snapped at the vet. Sammo has already snapped at me twice. Last night, we were on the back porch and he was enjoying a treat. It was getting dark and my girlfriend got up to get Sammo some water. He growled and charged at her. He has not had any real training outside of housebreaking and learning how to sit. What should we do?” The writing on the wall: Sammo had bitten twice before they adopted him, and they knew this. He’s an aggressive dog that requires professional training and firm boundaries. They will have to make conces-sions to keep Sammo safely in their lives and in their house. Rex: “Our 2-year-old Australian shepherd, Rex, has shown signs of aggression toward strangers and my daughter’s friends -- never toward family members. He won’t let anyone touch my daughter. If someone is on our yard, he will snarl and try to bite. Some mothers won’t let their girls come over anymore be-cause Rex bit them. He has even broken skin. We tried to socialize him, but it didn’t get any better, so we want to do something about it.” The writing on the wall: Rex is a dangerous dog, and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured. This family stands to lose a lot -- friendships, homeowners insurance, the home it-self or even lives. Rex should be securely confined whenever anyone visits their home, and he must be kept away from small children. Maddy: “Some months back, my daughter rescued an abandoned dog. We have rescued animals in the past, but I was hesitant to take in a new animal be-cause I’d just lost my job and money was -- and still is -- an issue. Nevertheless, I let “Maddy” stay. “In no time, I realized this little dog has some se-

thritis is no more effective than taking a placebo. And yet millions of Americans use them and believe them to be beneficial. The most likely reason is the very strong mind-body interaction. If you believe a treatment will help, the chances of benefit are good. On the other hand, if a medication is taken with reluctance and concerns about side effects, the chances of success are small. A good example of the pluses and minuses of alternative therapy is in the treatment of mild chronic depression, often referred to as dysthymia. Today, fish oil supplements are frequently recom-mended to help relieve symptoms of depression. The evidence is suggestive enough that clinical trials are under way to determine if fish oil is indeed of value. Many depressed people turn to St. John’s wort in the hope of relief. Sadly, research has repeatedly found that St. John’s wort is of no value whatsoever in treating depression. Nausea, insom-nia, anxiety and an allergic skin rash are common side effects, however. St. John’s wort also inter-feres with the action of many drugs including birth control pills, heart medications and therapies for HIV and AIDS. While no evidence has conclusively shown benefits of herbal remedies in the management of depression, it makes sense that massage, medita-tion and relaxation techniques can help improve mood and make psychotherapy and antidepres-sants more successful. A common blunder in the use of dietary supplements is the assumption that if a small amount of a vitamin in foods is of value, then larger amounts must be better. This led to the use of huge doses of vitamin A, E and C and many others that were thought (or marketed as such) to prolong life and reduce the risk of diseases including cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Sadly, the exact opposite is true. Mega dos-es of these supplements shorten life expectancy and increase risk of disease. There is no question that vitamins and minerals, certain fats and other nutritional substances improve health and prevent disease. But only if ingested in the old-fashioned way -- through food. Like every aspect of preventing or treating disease, the more you know the better. There may be an upside to alternative and complementary therapies, but downsides are also common. Truly understand the benefits and possible disadvantag-es before embarking on any course of therapy.

(and more than a few adults)

Alternative Therapies Can Help but Also Harm In every aspect of our lives, natural is touted as being better, and health care alternative therapies are all the rage. A recent report published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society stated that 80 percent of people over the age of 65 are consuming at least one alternative remedy and 40 percent are taking three or more. Why do we lean so readily toward these treatment options while being so suspicious of traditional pharmaceutical drugs? For many, cost is a concern, of prescription drugs and visits to a doctor’s office. But other factors are important as well. Because these remedies come “from the earth,” many believe them to have mystical powers, that being natural means they must be safer, have fewer side effects and must work as they have been handed down from generation to generation for centuries. But do they work and are they safe? Today, the health care community has more respect for homeopathic remedies. The National Institutes of Health is sponsoring rigorous studies to gauge the value of alternative therapies and to understand any potential risks. To achieve this goal, the Nation-al Center for Alternative and Complementary Medi-cine has been established to study these remedies. Complementary and alternative medicines include the use of natural products such as dietary supplements and herbs. The most commonly used supplement is fish oil. More than 40 percent of adults who use natural products take fish oil supplements that contain high doses of the very healthy omega 3 fatty acids. In children, the most commonly used therapy is echinacea to treat colds and sore throats. Complementary techniques in-clude meditation, yoga, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, body manipulation and massage. There is compelling evidence that some alternative therapies provide benefits. Chiropractic care for chronic low back pain is as effective as any other form of treatment. By contrast, however, carefully controlled clinical trials have shown that glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for osteoar-

Yet, I am afraid that Maddy will freak out at the sound of a baby rattle and bite one of the children. Any advice?” The writing on the wall: A dog driven berserk by arguments and noise and that has already bitten at least three children is not a candidate for “day care dog.” Maddy is dangerous and can’t be around chil-dren. TUES., DEC 6

Geezers and Floozies Q: I’m part of a group of old geezers who gets together every week at the local cof-fee place. Social Security is a frequent topic of conversation. At our last meeting, the subject of benefits for divorcees came up. One of our geezers was married to his first wife for 16 years and to his second wife for 30 years. His first wife remarried, but she is now divorced from that guy after 20 years of marriage. If our geezer pal dies, who will get what? He’s mostly wondering if his first wife will get Social Security from him or from her sec-ond husband.

A: Well, the answer depends on a lot of ifs, ands or buts not made clear in your email to me -- like people’s ages and Social Security benefit rates. So I’ll make up a scenario to give you an example of how all this would play out. We’ve got four people: -- Geezer is 68 years old and gets $2,100 per month from Social Security. -- Princess, his current wife, is 62 and gets her own Social Security retirement benefit amount-ing to $900 per month. -- Floozie, Geezer’s first wife, is 66, and she gets $1,200 per month in her own Social Security re-tirement checks. -- Wheezer is Floozie’s second husband and the guy she divorced after 20 years of marriage. Let’s say he is 70, still living, and gets $2,200 per month from Social Security. Now let’s say Geezer dies, and we’ll see what happens. Princess has a couple of choices to make. If she wants, she can immediately switch to widow’s benefits. She’d keep getting her own retirement check, which would be supplemented up to about 82 percent of his full rate, or about $1,722. So she’d get $900 on her own account and $822 in widow’s ben-efits. Or she can opt to continue receiving just her $900 retirement check for now, and then at age 66 get that supplemented up to Geezer’s full rate. So at age 66, she’ll get her own $900, plus $1,200 in widow’s benefits, for a total of $2,100. And no mat-ter which decision she makes, she’d get the one-time $255 death benefit. Floozie is also eligible for widow’s benefits on Geezer’s record because she was married to him for more than 10 years and because she is currently unmarried. Since she is over 66, her own retirement benefit can be supplemented up to Geezer’s full rate.

So she’ll continue to get her own $1,200 per month, and she’ll get $900 from Geezer’s account to take her up to Geezer’s full $2,100 benefit rate. (And please note that anything paid to Floozie, the divorced wife, doesn’t take a nickel away from the benefits due to Princess.) Floozie isn’t due anything on second hus-band Wheezer’s Social Security account -- at least not while he’s still living. She’s technically due a divorced wife’s benefit (at a 50 percent rate) on his record, but she can’t get that because her own benefit, $1,200, exceeds half his rate, or $1,100. And of course, now that we also add in Geezer’s widow’s benefit, her combined Social Security benefits greatly exceed anything she is due from Wheezer. However, when Wheezer dies, she can then switch to divorced widow’s benefits on his record. Her checks from Geezer would stop. And her own $1,200 retirement benefit would be supplemented with $1,000 from Wheezer’s record to take her total income up to $2,200. Is the moral of this story to be a Floozie, dump a Geezer, marry a Wheezer, dump him too and hope they both die -- and then watch the checks roll in? You tell me! * * *

Q: Can a guy like me who filed for So-cial Security retirement benefits at age 62 later switch to disability benefits? I recently had a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery.

A: It depends on how old you are now. As a general rule, if you’re pushing age 66 (or older), it won’t pay you to file for disability. Here’s why. Moneywise, a Social Security disability ben-efit pays the same rate as an age-66 full retirement benefit. So if you filed for disability and your claim was approved, your monthly Social Security payment amount would go up to your full retirement rate, and that’s obviously higher than the 75 percent reduced retirement benefit you are getting for starting your Social Security at age 62. BUT (and you’ll note this is a big BUT), they would have to reduce that disability (i.e., full retire-ment) rate by roughly one-half of 1 percent for each month you’ve already received a reduced retirement benefit. So, for example, if you were only 63 when you had that heart attack and got approved for dis-ability, your disability payment would be about 94

percent of your full benefit. (You already received 12 months worth of reduced retirement benefits, mean-ing they would have to knock off about 6 percent from your disability payment.) 94 percent is higher than the 75 percent reduced retirement rate you’re currently getting, so it would be to your advantage to file for disability benefits. But let’s say you had the heart attack at age 65 and then filed for disability. Your disability rate would have to be reduced by 18 percent (because you would have already received 36 reduced retire-ment checks). That would leave you with a rate of 82 percent. You’d have to decide if it’s worth the effort to go through all the hassle of filing for disability just to get bumped up from the 75 percent rate to the 82 percent rate. And once you reach age 66 (or anything old-er), there would be absolutely no advantage to filing for Social Security disability benefits.

Yeast Infection Tends to Recur DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I haven’t seen an article about vaginal yeast infections. The doctor gave me an oral antiyeast medicine for it and a cream to apply. In addition, he gave me something to stop the itching. It seemed worse after the treatment, so the doctor gave me five more days of the oral medicine. What would you suggest if it comes back again? Could it be something I am eating or taking? -- N.F.

ANSWER: Candida is the name of the yeast responsible for vaginal infections. Itching is a prominent sign. The vaginal lining also often is irri-tated and painful. Intercourse can be uncomfortable. White patches adhere to the vaginal lining, and there may be a white discharge. Close to 75 percent of all women will experience at least one Candida infection during their life. It has nothing to do with what you eat or take. Somewhere between 20 percent and 50 per-cent of woman harbor this yeast in their vagina but don’t have any symptoms of it. If these women are put on an antibiotic for an unrelated infection, the vaginal bacteria that keep the population of Candida at small numbers die off. Without those good bacte-ria, the Candida yeasts reproduce at a rapid rate and lead to symptoms. You were put on a standard treatment for Candida. Those treatments are antiyeast medicines that come as ointments, creams or vaginal supposito-ries. There are many of them. The oral antiyeast flu-conazole (Diflucan) is another approved treatment.Recurrence of this infection is common and hard to abolish. If it happens, longer treatment with vaginal antiyeast medicines coupled with a weekly dose of oral Diflucan for six months is a reasonable action. If that fails, referral to a center that has the capabil-ity to check Candida’s sensitivity to antiyeast medi-cation can end the problem. Unproven but popular ways of attacking this infection include eating yogurt with live lactobacillus in it to repopulate the vagina’s normal bacterial population. Another unproven ap-proach is to treat the male partner. It hasn’t been shown that such an approach works, but some ex-perts resort to it. Vaginal infections are discussed at length in the booklet on that topic. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1203W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about hypothyroidism? Does taking io-dine help? I hear that taking thyroid hormone

is a lifetime commitment. -- C.N.

ANSWER: Hypothyroidism is a thyroid gland that’s putting out way too little thyroid hor-mone. All body processes slow. People become weak and are exhausted. They’re cold when others are pleasantly warm. They gain weight without overeat-ing. Their skin dries. The face becomes puffy. The heart beats slowly. Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the main cause of a sluggish thyroid gland. It is not in North America. Here, the main cause is an attack on the gland by the immune system. The appropriate treatment is supplying the hormone in pill form. It usually is a lifelong treat-ment, but it’s not an onerous one. It’s taking only one pill a day. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Your Family’s Health History When it comes to leaving something for the next generations, there’s something even more valuable than albums with carefully identified photos -- and that is your family’s health history. The U.S. surgeon general has created the “My Family Health Portrait,” an online tool that helps organize the specifics of your family’s health. The potential benefits to the next genera-tions are huge. There are certain diseases that can run in the family, like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The risk for high blood pressure can show up through the generations. By knowing what diseases are common in the family, the gen-erations that follow will be able to guard against diseases that might have a hereditary basis. Their doctors will be able to assess which diagnostic and screening tests to run at various times based on family history. If you’d like to create your own family health file, go online to https://familyhistory.hhs.gov/ to access the online tool. You’ll start with baseline questions like your age, gender, whether you were born a twin, and your height and weight. You’ll move into the section on diseases or condi-tions you have or have had in the past. Then it gets a bit tricky when you have to list your relatives. It’s set up like a family tree: You start with your mother and father, if possible, and what you know about their health. Ideally, you can gather information for a total of three generations. At the end you can save the file and update it later as you gather more information, or print out what you have and share it with your family. By doing this you will be doing a great ser-vice to your children and grandchildren, and the information you provide could conceivably save the life of one or more of your own descendants!

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Sharing Valentine’s Day With Others Q: After 46 years of marriage my wife and I are still very much in love, and for us every day is Valentine’s Day. Since we usually don’t go all out for the traditional candy, expen-sive flowers and romantic dinners on this occa-sion, we would like to do something different this year. How could we go about sharing affec-tionate thoughts and somehow be a blessing to others this time?

A: What a great idea! There are a large number of lonely individuals out there. Some have lost their mate or a loved one, others are estranged from their families for one reason or another or ex-periencing major health issues. You could lift their spirits immensely by a simple thoughtful act. Consider buying a dozen or so inexpensive valentine cards at your dollar store and mailing them to friends and neighbors signed: “Just want you to know I’m glad to have you as a friend.” Another idea could be to bake and bag up cookies to bring to these people along with the card. Is there someone who has recently divorced or had a serious accident? Flowers or a card would give them a huge lift. If you don’t know of a needy person, call your clergey or local nursing home for the name of an individual who could use some en-couragement. Send it anonymously if you want. I hope these suggestions help, and I hope they get you to think of other ideas. I suspect that the satisfaction you gain by making a difference will encourage you to do it again next year!

Q: We have always managed our own financial portfolios with mutual funds, annui-ties, money market and savings accounts. But now, as we watch the economy getting weaker and weaker, our dividend and interest pay-ments are getting alarmingly small. I am also afraid of losing my pension payments as I’ve heard that my previous employer is struggling to stay in business. We have never had profes-sional financial assistance, but now we think we should consider doing this. In your opinion, is this really a wise idea?

A: Absolutely! For most all of us, the days of simply riding on the fruits of our principle is now shaky at best. The rules of finance we all grew up with have changed, and it makes good sense to have a trusted advisor to guide us through the labyrinth

of today’s investment world. I recommend finding an experienced, knowl-edgeable and trustworty financial planner who will sit down with you, evaluate your present financial situation and suggest ways to maximize your long-term income. Find someone who will develop a port-folio specifically for your age and income needs. He or she should wisely balance your portfolio between low-risk stocks, bonds and money market accounts. Retired seniors simply can’t afford the years it takes to recover any losses from high-risk stocks, so it is very important to stay with the conservative choices. We all want to maintain our lifestyles after the years we spent working to get there. Unfortunately, many investment choices today are being driven by fear. Paying a professional a fee to monitor and guide your investment accounts will give you more secu-rity and confidence and help lessen your stress.

● On Feb. 9, 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige becomes the first Negro League vet-eran to be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was inducted in August of that year. Joe DiMaggio once called Paige “the best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.”

● On Feb. 12, 1988, two Soviet war-ships bump two U.S. navy vessels in waters claimed by the Soviet Union. The incident between the ships took place in the Black Sea within the 12-mile territorial limit claimed by the Soviet Union.

Porcelain Condiment Set Serves as Family Heirloom Q: I have in my possession the por-celain set that is seen in the enclosed photo. The set consists of a tray, a covered sugar bowl with a matching porcelain spoon and two shak-ers. The round tray measures approximately 7 inches in diameter. They are all decorated with hand-painted pink roses, green leaves and gold trim. The set is in pristine condition. Each piece is marked with the words “Hand Painted -- Nip-pon -- M.” I did some research and learned that this mark indicates that the pieces were import-ed by the Morimura Brothers. There is a note in the sugar bowl that says the set belonged to my grandmother in the year 1919. Any information you can give me about this set, its actual age and the value it might have will be appreciated.

A: Nippon is the Japanese word for Ja-pan and was used in marks on porcelain from 1891 to around 1920. The Morimura Brothers were dis-tributors who exported porcelain from Japan to the United States. Your set is a condiment set and the bowl with spoon/ladle is for serving mustard. Tooth-pick holders were often included in these sets. Style, design and the manufacturer’s mark are the basis for determining age. Based on that, your condiment set was made sometime between 1891 and 1910. Similar sets are selling on the Internet at $75 to $125.

Q: This mark is on the bottom of a pitcher that we inherited. It belonged to my hus-band’s aunt, who died in England 10 years ago at the age of 90. Also included in the mark is the name “Rhead.” We were told his name is Freder-ick Rhead and he was an English ceramic artist. The pitcher is 7 inches tall and in mint condi-tion. It is decorated with a tan-and bittersweet-colored, stylized design. We would love to know the approximate age of the piece as well as its value.

A: Close, but no cigar! Your pitcher was made by Frederick Rhead’s daughter, Charlotte, around 1933 for Crown Ducal in England. Frederick was an accomplished English potter and design-er, but was not associated with Crown Ducal. His daughter was one of their most talented designers, and her work is highly collectible today. Your pitcher would probably be worth $300 to $500.

Bunker Drill When hitting out of a bunker, a common tendency for many amateurs is to decelerate or stop the club completely after impact. The re-sult usually leaves the ball still in the bunker. It is important to have a complete follow-through when hitting out of the sand, but for some play-ers it can be difficult to incorporate that feel. As a drill, hit some bunker shots with only your left hand (for left-handed players, use your right hand). This will force you to take a longer swing, as well as exaggerate your fol-low-through. Don’t lock your elbow or wrist after impact. Allow the elbow to remain relaxed and the wrist to hinge after impact and during the follow-through. This drill will give you the proper feel for what it is like to accelerate through the ball. As an additional result, you should find that you are now utilizing the full bounce of the club and that the club head slides through the sand much more cleanly.

ADDITIONAL

Don’t buy a putter until you’ve had a chance to throw it. Never try to keep more than 10 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse. The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all of your many other errors. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.
