PRESIDENT’S COLUMN This is pretty cool, how many people do you know that can look out their office window at work and see 4 baby Hooded Mergansers and a little fuzz ball on stilts baby Dowitcher shorebird at the pond in front of my window. Oh yes, and this is all going on while I write this column, at work too. I guess I don’t have such a bad job after all. July has been a pretty quiet month around the club, at least for me any way. Most weekends my wife and I have been able to go north and relax a little. We have gotten a ton of work done there as well, moving gravel and planting flowers, my next project will be laminate flooring in the hallway then I’m done for a while. The Month of August will definitely not be nearly as quiet for me though; we have the Beef Cook Out August 11th which is always a blast of a party, all the preparations for Good Old Days, then the actual event of Good Old Days where this year we will have an actual professional Chainsaw Carvers Competition, and the Second annual Terry Muns Car/ Motorcycle Show to go along with the attractions for adults and kids going on. This year we have asked that rain not be allowed on our grounds for the whole weekend, even though we badly need some rain. I plan to be there for the all day work bee before Good Old Days and all day for the event as well, and I sure hope to see all of the hard working members of MLCA helping out as well to make this a great event like we have seen in the past. I am sure there will be some great food on the grill, the firemen display and, no, again this year I will not be in the dunk tank in my Speedo! No disappointment there, eh? The wives and girlfriends will be doing the bake sale inside again I hope, so we can load up on ginger snap cookies, I need those like a wart but they really are good. This year we are hoping to have a new club brochure printed up to hand out to everybody that drives in to help promote Multi Lakes and let people know what we are really all about. Hopefully this will boost interest in becoming members of our club. We all know that we could really use more members to keep MLCA strong and make it through the hard times we are in right now. The raffle tickets for the Bass Pro $1000 gift card first prize and a $500 second prize are on sale now at the bar for $5 each. There will be a limited number of tickets sold and the drawing will be held at our November Spouse’s Night meeting. Please support this raffle by purchasing as many tickets as you can - who wouldn’t want to win a $1000 or $500 shopping spree at a great store like Bass Pro, especially just before Christmas. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome all the new members of Multi Lakes to their new club, please enjoy it and use all the facilities we have to offer; you are now a part of the best organization I have ever belonged to. Please introduce yourselves and meet as many people as you can from all the different committees as this will help you feel comfortable where ever you go on the grounds and make it easier for you to join in on any committees you may have an interest in. If you have a question that nobody seems to have an answer to, please call me and I will do my best to find an answer for you. Multi Lakes needs its members, all of them! So enjoy being one of those members. Tony Katopodis

WOMEN ON TARGET® UPDATE July 21, once again we were blessed with beautiful weather and a great bunch of students and instructors. Archery was on board for the second time and while I was visiting with them they were all having a tremendous amount of fun. I had not shot a bow in over 30 years and still managed to hit the target. Trap was expanded to having 1-field throwing straight away targets as usual and 1-field throwing targets in random directions. Chet Hendrickson the 1982 Trap World Champion signed on as one of the instructors and we took advantage of his knowledge to help the women on the advanced field. On several occasions you have heard us say that at “day’s end it is hard to figure out who had the most fun, the students or the instructors” well we can now add: “and the trappers have a blast”, no pun intended. On behalf of the NRA, Women On Target®, and the NRA Shooting Sports Camp Program’s I would like to personally thank all of the instructors not only for donating their time; but their rifles, handguns and black powder rifles and in quite a few cases, their own personal ammo for use by the students. Next Women On Target®/Shooting Camp will be held on September 29, 2007 hope to see you there. Cal Kittinger Women’s Events

Breast Friends Have you or someone you know been affected by breast cancer? Thousands of women are diagnosed every day. It is an on-going battle – and we need your help. Each year, the Susan G. Komen Foundation hosts the Breast Cancer 3-Day; where men and women from all over the U.S. join together to raise money to fight the disease. Adam Rott, member since 2006, and Multi-Lakes volunteer, Coral Tucker are “stepping up” this year. Over a period of three days, Adam and Coral will trek 60 miles to show their support for the cause. They have agreed to raise the required $2,200.00 each. That’s why they need your help. If you are able to donate, please see Adam for a donation slip or call him at 248-891-7640. You can also log onto www.the3day.org and follow the steps below. Thank you for your support!

1) Click on Donate, and choose Make A Donation in the drop down box. 2) On the LEFT side, choose Michigan, September 28-30, 2007. 3) Type in either Adam Rott or Coral Tucker (both from Novi) in the boxes

provided. When prompted, choose the name you want from the list below.

4) You will then be taken to the participant’s personal page. Here you can choose the amount you wish to donate. It’s as easy as that!

The Multi-Lakes Conservation Association in conjunction with Center Mass, Inc. & PSI, will be hosting this course on August 17-19, 2007. MCLA MEMBER COST: $175.00 per shooter. NON-MEMBER COST : $399.00 (Subject to availability) Registered attendees of the course receive a course manual, T-Shirt & certificate of training. The club will be offering lunch and drinks. RESTRICTIONS: Convicted felons are not eligible to attend any portion of this course. Persons with court orders baring them from possessing a firearm may not attend. Violation of these restrictions or the law may result in notification to the proper authorities and revocation of club membership. REGISTRATIONS & PAYMENT: Must be received by Friday, August 10th, 2007 and are non-refundable (Personal check or Credit card).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course begins on Friday evening at 6:30pm with a 3 hour seminar on Concealed Carry Self Defense. It covers many important issues such as concealed carry equipment selection, what happens in confrontations, what you need to do to be more effective and well rounded in your self defense, and safety. This seminar is open to any club member on Friday night for free, whether or not you are enrolled for the weekend course. Then, for those who are registered for the weekend, there are two days of intensive hands-on training in a variety of shooting and tactics skills, with over 600 rounds of shooting. This course is an excellent building block approach and will enable the student with many of theskills needed to begin more serious training. In addition, this is also a good starter course for future attendance at other schools of thisnature, or for those looking for a review or refresher course. The techniques taught in this course can be used with any type of pistol.(Walk-ins are not allowed - You must be registered for this portion of the course by August 10th, 2007). This is a very thorough, 2 - day course, covering the most important skills for defensive use of the pistol and concealed carry. This course begins with the basics (fundamentals, drawing techniques, how to reload, legal considerations, safety, etc.) then moves on to self defense skills such as use of cover, movement, multiple targets, and more. The course culminates with a variety of defensive drills which include shooting on the move, decision-making, and a defensive pistol shooting evaluation. This course goes far beyond what most schools instruct in defensive firearms use in the same timeframe. No experience whatsoever is necessary. However, attendees should have a working knowledge of their pistol and be in good physical condition as the stress of the movements can take a physically exhausting toll on some students. Persons with heart conditions, bad knees, elbows, hips, or back conditions should not attend this course. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT: A GOOD ATTITUDE!!! SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH at least 3 MAGAZINES (pistol should be safe &reliable). A waist level belt holster, preferably worn between the area of the appendix and the kidney on the shooter’s ‘strong’ ordominant side. If you have a specialty type holster, certainly bring it and time permitting we will show you more about how to use it. ASTURDY BELT (for wear of the holster, magazine pouch, and accessories). BASEBALL TYPE HAT (anything with a bill and that willallow the wearing of ear muffs). AMMUNITION: 600-700 rounds of factory new ammunition is preferred (Reloaded ammunition is notrecommended unless it is from a reputable manufacturer and that which is within the specifications for safe operation of your particular pistol). PISTOL CLEANING KIT. SUITABLE RANGE CLOTHING (pants with belt loops, short sleeve shirt, walking shoes).CONCEALED CARRY GARMENTS (at least one zippered or button downed jacket or shirt and at least one sweatshirt/sweater/pullover,for practicing concealment techniques). LOCKING DEVICE FOR FIREARM(S) if required by the club or the law. Clothing appropriate for weather conditions (cold/wet). You must bring your own eye & ear protection. RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT: Soft body armor, water bottle or camelback, knee pads, elbow pads, sunscreen, bug juice, flashlight or camera. Other weapon accessories you may want to try out during the course. Instructor: J.M. Peterson: Mr. Peterson is an Instructor for Center Mass, Inc. and is the Director of Personal Security Institute (PSI). He also Instructs for the International Association for Counterterrorism and Security Professionals (IACSP), Washington D.C.. He is a former U.S. Army Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, serving over 20 years between active duty and reserve component status and retiring with an honorable discharge to the “Retired Reserve.” He has served for 2-3 years each as an employee of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Smith & Wesson Academy, Sigarms Academy, and as a Private Investigator. He is a co-founder of and serves on the executive board of the National Patrol Rifle Competition & Conference. In the area of Concealed Carry and Self Defense training, he has specialized in this for over 10 years and been a practitioner for over 20. He has taught concealed carry classes at many top national conferences, to include TREXPO, to several thousand U.S. citizens, and to a combined audience to include law enforcement, government, military, and executive protection specialists. While serving at the Smith & Wesson Academy and the Sigarms Academy, he either authored or revised and taught every single type of defensive handgun program for the public that they offered. In 2002, he formed PSI and designed the Concealed Carry Defensive Pistol™ Course and the Concealed Carry/Self Defense Seminar ™ which are very refined programs tailored especially to the needs of the individual private citizen for self defense.
