Father’s Day June 16, 2019

JUNE 2019

Fathers Day Consider the honor that God has given to you as a father. Jesus said

“When you pray, say “Our Father….”. God made himself known to Moses by a name that defines his nature, that is, his essential being.

To explain our essential being is human, but that says nothing about how we act or function. Jesus made God more personal when he

referred to God as a Father. I have three children. I cherish the title “father”. I want my children

to know me as “father” not as the human to whom I am connected genetically. The second is so impersonal.

What characterizes a good father? First, along with mother, he is the source of life. You can change your name, move to India, and formally

disinherit yourself from your father but you can never be not connected to your father (Forgive the double negative).

A father provides. The first years of your life you were totally

dependent upon your father (What I say about father is, in most cases, true of a good mother.) Your security, nourishment, comfort all came

from your father. Your education was provided by your father, probably through taxation and paid professional educators, but also

beyond, sometimes costing, thousands of dollars. (Many years ago I read that the total cost of raising a child – from childbirth through high

school was something over $200,000.) A good father also disciplines. Rules are established, guidelines set,

expectations clarified. A good father does this to protect you from hurting yourself. A good father wants to protect you physically,

emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. Pity the poor child who is not discipled.

All of you have had fathers. I trust that they were good fathers. If not, and there are fathers not worthy of the name, give thanks to God

that your Heavenly Father has provided you with what your biological

fathers failed to provide. I trust that you too have been a good father. If you have been, blessed are you and your children.

Give thanks to your Heavenly Father today that Jesus has honored you by called God “Father”.

gifts!! Yee Haw!! Join in Yee Haw Mooosic, Wrangler games & projects, a country picnic, and a Kid to Kid Mission Project to help

women and children of Zimbabwe, Africa. Admission is free, but you will leave filled with God's Gifts.

BBQ Potluck

Sunday June 2, 2019 Carlos Gracia and Kenny Morgan will be firing up the BBQ grill following our worship and congregational meeting. Parish Life is asking you to

bring a dish to share. Join us for good food and fellowship. Sign up sheet on the kiosk.

Our Cordless Microphone (that the Pastor uses) has stopped working. AV Innovations put in the system so Melody took the

microphone to them to fix, but it can’t be fixed. It’s over 10 years old and the wiring can’t be repaired. We can’t just buy a new microphone.

We also have to replace the box that controls it. So our cost will be $808.94. At this time we are asking for donations to go toward the

replacement system. Anything you can give will be appreciated.

POZ CAFE…on Thursday, August 15th (8 AM – 2:30 PM) volunteers from

Santa Cruz Lutheran Church will join two other churches at St. Francis in the

Foothills UMC as we again participate in the Poz Café to provide a delicious and nutritious lunch for people in Tucson living with HIV. Care Packages filled

with toiletries and other necessities are given to those in need. There will be more info in the July Newsletter, but please begin collecting individually wrapped paper towels, four-packs of toilet paper, toothpaste, and small

containers of bleach to help fill those Care Packages. And, be sure to let Ruth know if you’d like to be one of our volunteers!

SCHOOL SUPPLIES: School is getting out for the summer but starts

up again in August. Time for us to start collecting school supplies. These will be given out early August for those who can’t afford to buy

supplies. Paper, Pencils, crayons, erasers, folders, rulers, notebooks,

received 140 Happy 100th Birthday cards! and you were a big part of that!! She was overwhelmed, amazed and grateful. On her behalf,

GRAND CANYON SYNOD—BISHOP’S LETTER

“Our response to care for creation is really about loving our neighbor.” The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. —Isaiah 24:4-5

When I attended the Bishop’s Academy this January, the featured topic was care of creation. With so many other immediate matters before me as bishop, I questioned why was I focusing a few days on the welfare of our planet. Then Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda and Dr. Larry Rasmussen shared their brutal facts, resources for hope, and the reminder of our baptismal call to strive for justice and peace throughout all the earth. I was awakened to the urgency of their message. The burden of climate change falls disproportionally on people and nations who experience poverty and have less resources to adapt. Our response to care for creation is really about loving our neighbor. People who are called to love their neighbor must see more deeply. The church is a servant, a messenger of God’s saving love. A few weeks ago, I joined church bishops and leaders in accepting an invitation from ELCA Advocacy, an arm of World Hunger, to learn more about natural disasters and care of creation. This trip to our nation’s capital included visits with elected leaders. At every visit, I assured our leaders and their staff that we are grateful for their service, that we hold them in prayer, and we urge them to reach across the aisle and seek common ground. I let them know we lift our voices on behalf of the most vulnerable, those who suffer the most from natural disasters that are intensifying because of global warming. We urged disaster assistance for the people of Puerto Rico and the funding of the National Flood Insurance Program. There is a lot of bad news on climate change, but we still have time to do something. Climate change is a fixable problem—we have the technology, resources, and a window of time to transition to a clean energy economy. But we need to work quickly. We need to act now. Most of you are likely doing something already. If you are looking for more ideas, I encourage you to check out the ELCA resourcehttps://www.elca.org/Resources/Caring-for-Creation. Let me know what you and your worship community are doing. Your actions may inspire others. I must confess that I see this as a much more urgent matter than I did in January. I am convinced there is no issue more pressing or impactful on our life together. To make this a more livable world for all, our faith calls us to unite in truth-telling and hope. The Rev. Deborah K.
