JUNE.. . INDEED DID BUST OUT ALL OVER

Most of the meetings had very little time for POD business but we did all work hard at doing the business of MOGANEERING.

FIRST-UP - THE GREAT ISLAND CELL TOUR

The long story will be told by GIL STEGEN in every lurid detail; this version will be in the PARENTAL GUIDANCE SECTION ONLY of the MOGAZINE. My participation in any scandal was very light as all I got to do was exchange beds with GERI BUTTON; she seemed to like my bed better.

The other "official" chore was the coronation of ROLAND THE RUTHLESS a minor GRAND VIZIER of the ISLAND CELL and some time tour organizer, all this nicely captured for television by the GRAND VIZIER of LACONNER. This pomp and circumstance all taking place on the fiefdom of LORD WOODY and LADY CARMEL THOMSON; with a freshly killed deer roasting on a spit (OK so it was a Iamb) making a fitting background for the "crowning" of ROLAND THE RUTHLESS

At this auspicious event we were very lucky to have a "gathering" of the trio of 1972 Morgans, the last three that GEORGE STERNF brought into Canada before the door was to slam shut for more than 15 years! First, is the STERNE plus 8 now in the hands of son BILL & FAY, the two seat (red) 4/4 now in the care of TRISH and LEO LEE, and my 4/4 - 4 seater - what a great combo!

LADY DAIMLER AND HER LITTLE DOCKERS??

BIG FUN at Chemainus, as JIM WALTERS brought up his DAIMLER DOCKER - that big silver unit he had at the BELLEVUE ALL BRITS and other local events. (Ed. note: see photo in 6/94 Magazine with Brian's 3-wheeler.) What fun all the little Morgans running around this huge convertible!

LYDIA STERNE COMES OUT TO PLAY

Final little highlight for the Powleys was our afternoon visit with LYDIA STERNE in her new home in Qualicum - all the Morgans lined up under the canopy and Lydia as always dressed in the Sterne livery of Black & White ready for a sit down in the PLUS 8 - The GILBERTS also presented her with the "official" Island Cell dash plaque commem-orating the event.

In all the ISLAND CELL TOUR organizers PAT and ROLAND GILBERT and WOODY and CARMEL THOMSON are to be congratulated for just an excellent job in the planning and execution of

this tour - see elsewhere in the MOGAZINE for "ALL" the EXPOSE.'

BANNED FROM THE SCOTTISH GAMES???

Yes the POT could not attend the Scottish Games this year due to the BUTTON incidents on Vancouver Island and had to go to a wedding in PENTICTION for penance. But we did rigorously brief the CLUB LAIRD of the Day BERT McMcCABE, on Friday night at the POT'S PALACE, making sure that every bit of protocol was clearly understood and that all attendees behavior would be exemplary at the games. Further, JONATHAN RUSSELL was then appointed scribe and further words and description of this event will appear under his hand. Chief amusement for the Friday briefing was watching the "rushes" of ROLAND THE RUTHLESS'S Coronation ... and many other ribald events that took place on the ISLAND TOUR.

On the Saturday morning as the POT'S Family took-off to PENTICTON it was great to see both LAIRD of the DAY MCCABE and SCRIBE RUSSELL in their kilts ready to do battle with any and all at the games - especially those who would be critical of GRAHAM BAILEY'S PIPING!

PENANCE DONE IN PENTICTON

Yes, it was difficult to miss the SCOTTISH FESTIVITIES, but the LOBSTER event put on by KEN & PAT MILES more than made up for it. Having a good excuse NOT to participate in the RALLY part due to the Pentiction Penance matter the POT arrived only to find out that participants the THEROUXS, RUSSELLS and RIC and LADY GLENDA were all still out there somewhere he' , he! he! ... RALLYING!

However, somehow the LATURNUS' also avoided the "tour" and so the next hour or so passed in a lively manner, only interrupted occasionally with a worried wondering of just where could they all be? It almost became a lets get the lobster on without them issue when for the next 1/2 hour all 3 MOGS came trickling in bearing a huge portfolio of directions and things to do. KEN MILES then quickly retreated to a quiet spot to do the marking and calculations: with Ric and Glenda who arrived last coming first, then the RUSSELLS, then the THEROUXS - then we could all eat! The pool was wet, nearly all went for a swim, the wine was wet too and the lobsters cooperated by dying dignified deaths in KEN'S lobster pot (not POT!) This was a "really must do" next year for sure event and many thanks to KEN and PAT MILES for hosting the POD at their LOBSTER POT!!!

CONTEST - CONTEST - CONTEST

Yes, in the June issue you saw a Famous CLIFF BAKER MORGAN CROSS WORD PUZZLE. CLIFF is the assistant editor to Chris Rowe, editor of the MSCC magazine MISCELLANY from the Mother Club. The solution was sent to the POT in strict confidence and a prize is there for the first correct solution sent or handed to the POT before the end of AUGUST - so sharpen you pencils and get to it now - PAGE 10 in the JUNE ISSUE of the MOGAZINE. - WIN A PRIZE!!

JULY WILL TOP JUNE???

Yes July looks like a big one with two Historic Racing events, flying events and Rallying events - but the biggest of course will be the 20th ANNIVERSARY event and we hope to see you-all at one of these activities for sure.

blessings and greetings to all for a great summer

OUR 201111 IS ON THE 22N1)! (OF ,JULY)

Midland Mat ter, from .oL' NeIon ....

From your absent midlands person...

Yes we missed the June meeting. This has got to stop. We are getting settled in our home, and just barely get the Morgan out of the garage. We did do the Vancouver All Brit and will be at our 20th.

Both Morgans are running good (great). Harman loaned his Mornn to a friend to go to the Vancouver All Brit, so he and Judy drove our 4/4.

I did some brake work on it, but was having a pulling problem when braking. It turns out that the left front flex brake line was swollen inside and not letting the fluid through fast enough. Two new lines

were $48.00 each and it brakes good now. Just something to keep in mind if yours are 10 years old.

See you for sure in July Bob and Loretta

P.S. We'll do a late summer picnic out here!

(Ed. notes: attending the June meeting at the Lucky 7 Saloon in their Morgans were Hal and Joan, Bill and Geri, Mike, Gil, Alan and Craig. By other brands were Jack and Jean, Terry, Joe and Daryl)

5authern Chatter, from He!t-iz

Maybe it's the good weather, but the June social meeting brought out a crowd of 15, including Lynn Hawkins from Idaho who is doing some consulting and temporarily living in Portland. Roger and Linda Huntley, just back from a trip to Great Britain and Ireland, related their adventures (ah, those pubs') and entertained us with some great pictures including an entire album of shots taken at the Morgan factory. Did you say thirty rolls of film, Linda?

Mike Miles arrived with a rather sus-picious looking package which he carefully placed in a corner and then refused to answer questions as to its contents. Toward the end of the evening, he rose to give a rather rambling introduction - something about a group of Morganeers who traveled together to the Vancouver Field Meet; the discovery that two of them like Dots (gumdrops) and gummi bears (doesn't everyone?); one of them, Bob Hauge, had worked on his car and it now runs better than ever, etc, etc. When he finally opened the

package, it contained a white board on which he had fashioned a great looking Morgan made entirely of Dots - a hidden talent that first came to light when he carved the famous cheese Morgan in Vancouver. The response from the crowd was only temporarily dampened by the comment "It's D.O.T. approved" - I promised not to tell who is was. The presentation was rounded out by both Bob and I receiving five large boxes of Dots, the last of which is being consumed as this is being written. Thanks Mike.

The evening ended with what is be-coming an increasingly unpleasant confrontation with the management of the Roadhouse over the payment of the bill. If the place weren't so convenient, we would have left some time ago. OK, so here it is: I need some input from all you southies on what you want to do in the future. I've scheduled us back in for July because we can enjoy sitting outside. Bring your ideas for a new venue to the next meeting.

Two other recent "activities" were the quarterly business meeting in Olympia and the Seattle Historics, both attended by many Morgans! Spotted at Cammarano's warehouse in Olympia on June 20th were the following drivers with their steeds:

Ca mm a ran o Stegen and passenger Amos Stromquist Hauge Miles Runions and Nancy Dice parked off in the far corner with her "off-brand" something or other

Out at Seattle International Raceway for the Northwest Historics, which was a really neat weekend with about 175 vintage/classic racers including many Can-Am cars, our Morgans made quite a showing (Mike Amos and Joe Ray were there sans Mogs)

VanDusen Wrap-up, by Ric MacDonald (a Disciple of 'El Pot') .....

Had the traditional lunch at the Jolly Coachman Pub on Sunday. Both Lady Glenda and I felt the standard of fish and chips, even after several pints of the 'Golden Nectar', not quite up to standard, but perhaps just because we've been spoiled by some of the shops at Pot's monthly meetings. Lady G spotted a Pub near the Albion ferry and suggested it might be worth investigating, nice view of the Fraser River.

We did manage to save one of the Coachman's umbrellas (MG TO on panels) from the litter bin; must have expired the use-by date as it seemed OK, but for a small tear on one the red panels. Lady G said she could fix it with an iron-on patch, (I would have used red duct tape but as fabric repair being one of her talents, I kept quiet!). It actually came to immediate use as we erected it for shade whilst waiting for the ferry.

As Bailey's generator had 'gone south,' (where Lady G and I had been tasked to escort Scruffy Bert), leaving a dead battery, I was volunteered as starter power to get him going off the ferry. One push and he was off, but of course the entourage could not stop on the dock, so off they went motoring to the first pull off. A bit of a walk after lunch never hurt any one!'

Having said our good-byes, Lady G and I left escorting Scruffy Bert and Ruth to the border;

this being necessary as we don't want him getting lost, thereby wandering about the country inflicting himself on the local population on an otherwise peaceful Sunday. We were deemed by S.B. to have 'local knowledge' so he gave us his map which 'Faithful Navigator' Lady G took. Seems the map was 'vintage' as Lady G found roads which did not correspond to any lines on the map. Surely S.B. would have gotten lost, thereby wandering about etc...

Had a very pleasant drive on the back roads, to quote Bert; "Don't know where the Hell we were, but a great drive, road a bit choppy in parts." S.B. and I differed in our approach to the choppy bits, he choosing the more conservative slow over every bump route, whilst I (Lady G and I securely fastened in and the front suspension to be rebushed this winter) opted for the more adventurous 'moto-cross' technique. The theory being to take the first bump at speed launching over the rest. Works fine so long as the front of the car is not still going down while the last bump is still going up!

A good run to end yet another successful VanDusen weekend. With a hearty 'Yankee Go Home,' but 'You come back Real Soon, EH!' Scruffy Bert and his Lady Ruth were sent on their way and were last seen through the Canadian border. Mission accomplished.

Morgans Over the West - MOGNW News, from Nancy Dice .....

Here's the latest on the Morgan Tour coming through in August and September: 1) Dinner plans are set for Friday night, Aug. 25, at the Bellevue Inn. See the special page in

this issue, fill out the form, send it in with your money (checks to MOG-NW, mail to Nancy Dice at 13802 S.E. 3rd P1., Bellevue, WA 98005 USA). Do so today and make me happy!

2) Dick and I drove around Mt. Rainier, all the way, in about 7 hours with only time for overheating and cooling down, and a stop to pick up maps at Paradise, and a stop at Wellington's cabin to pee. Traffic was not bad. This will change, but it will still be possible to make it to the cabin in plenty of time for the 3 p.m. picnic. And they might even get in a small hike. Plans are coming together for getting picnic stuff up to the cabin, and Dave Cammarano is working a deal for us to get some free beverages for the picnic. Thanks Dave (and Fred??)

3) Prizes are being accumulated for drawings on that Friday and Saturday for both guests and MOG-NWers. There will be some swell stuff! If you have any donations of appropriate items, they would be appreciated.

4) Can you help by bringing a salad to the picnic? If you plan to do the drive, and don't want your salad to overheat, you can bring it to the Inn on Saturday a.m. and put it into a van and have it taken directly to the cabin. We will need salads from about 10 or 12 locals, each to feed 10 people. The other picnic food will be furnished by the club: bangers and burgers, buns, cake, etc. I will be takina down names at the 20th oartv of those who can help.

TOURS IN GENERAL AND ONE IN PARTICULAR, a southern view by Nancy Dice

Why do we go on tour with other Morgan owners? There might be any number of reasons. An obvious one is to do the driving; to have the car run smoothly and effortlessly on twisty, challenging roads.

A second reason is to see new country and meet new people. A third is to eat and drink to excess with congenial companions. A fourth is to put miles on the car so that we can beat the world record for most miles in the least number of years.

All of these goals were met on our latest adventure into the wilds of Vancouver Island. Our car ran like a dream, with only a slight grabbing of the brakes when applied; Dick has since fixed this minor problem by tightening a loose strut. (A few others weren't so lucky, with a flat tire for Bert McCabe and a non-starter for Ron Theroux. But hey! not so tough.) The roads, especially from Port Alberni to Tofino, are plenty twisty & up & down all at the same time. The long line of cars looked like a caterpillar. And some of the roads were new to us.

The new people: new to us, not new as people of course! -- it was great to meet Bill and Faye Sterne and see GB's wonderful B/W in action. And Mavis and Jim Bayer in their Island Green, not to mention Drew Irwin and friend Laurie White in ditto (we had met the car last year on the Banff tour with Drew's dad driving). And Lars with his newly painted car -- green, naturally, but with

black wings. And we got to visit Lydia Sterne. And we traveled with neat people like Bert 'n' Ruth, Woody n Carmel, Ron n Yvonne, Leo n Trisha Lee. Pat n Roland, Mike n Rosemarie. Jonathan n Dale, Ric n Glenda, Gil n Barb, Bill 'n , Geri, Ted C-G, and who did I leave out? The nice people we met and talked to at the car show in Victoria (19 cars on the field!!! We should do so well at other locations!) The eating and drinking I will leave to your imaginations, only to say that as usual the next meal was always of interest, and the home-made wines and beer at Woody's Place were outstanding. I will leave the discussion of The Bar-be-qued Lamb to another better qualified than I to discuss construction details. However, IF you should ever get a chance to visit the Thomsons and stay in the 100-year old cottage, and hear Woody and Carmel tell stories about their place, DO NOT DECLINE!! It's fabulous.

And we put a bunch more miles on the car, and discovered that at least in the summer you can get from Nanaimo to Tsawwassen by ferry and avoid the whole blasted traffic of Vancouver! Great!

Many thanks again to the Gilberts and the Thomsons who planned and executed, and to Mavis who helped with lunches, and to every one of the members of the Van Isle Morgan Cell. (My great tee-shirt is a product of the fine mind of Carmel, and it's mine, and you can't have it!)

REDMOND, WA TO TOFINO, BC, an Island Morgan Cell production narrated by Gil Stegen

Friday June 16, the prognostication was for sea state 5, Beaufort 7, and lightening storms on Saturday. Not to be outdone by the stalwart roadsters, I put the top up, taped the jacking portals shut, and rigged my bonnet harness as a grounding strap. After doning our Scottish oil skins, Barbara and I departed Redmond at 7:30am under ominous skies. The rain held back until Everett, where we were deluged by 1000 millimicrons of pure Washington State cloud water. As we approached the Peace Arch, the glorious Canadian sun pushed back the clouds to provide a stirring welcome, and a wonderful start to our version of the tour. Having crossed the border at lOam, we stopped at the kiosk for Loonies and tourist stuff. Therein, I was appraised that our planned 12:15 ferry doesn't run on Saturday. Advancing the throttle to full-on, we dashed up 99A and down 17 hoping to make the 11am ferry from Tsawvvassen to Swartz Bay. We arrived at 10:30am, only to be told that we had an undersized vehicle (I wasn't sure if we were allowed on the BC ferry system). Fortunately, the Beefeater

magnanimously allowed us to proceed, after having of course paid full size fare. Being at the back of the line, we had no idea what lay ahead. However, our resolve was strengthened when we saw a unknown red 4/4 (later identified as belonging to Leo & Trisha Lee). After a few minutes of rain we were loaded on the top deck of the super ferry, and told to park with all of the other undersized vehicles. Eureka, we had found the mainland group. A short hour of good companionship put us on the ISLAND, and the true beginning of our adventure.

Having driven all of 12 miles, the Pot lead us to a two hour refueling stop. We were mostly well behaved. We then proceeded as a gaggle to the Thomson's Hunting Reserve on Lake Maltby. What a grand place to have a party. Woody and Carmel greeted us as lost sheep. The cars wrapped around the BARN in a flowing display of ash and steel. Anticipating our need for warming elixir, the Thomsons and the Gilberts had provided home brew and homemade red and white wines.

REDMOND TO TOFINO, continued from Gil.....

I'm sorry that I don't remember the varietal, but the red was in an oak barrel (honorary ash please). With glasses in hand, the Morgan engineers proceeded to be amazed by Woody's lamb rotisserie. The Iamb had been skewered with a stainless steel rod that had once been the drive shaft for P1109. The spit was a swing like mechanism amply patinated with Morgan oxide. The lamb was held at various clock positions by a counter weight positioned on a wheel attached to the spit. For those of you without virtual vision, think of it like having a ten pound wheel weight on your right front!! While the Iamb sizzled, and the Pot reigned, three lads stalwart, braved the awesome waves of Lake Maltby. Roland Gilbert, Gilbert Roland, (Ed. note: Gil, you're losing it!) and Jonathan had a grand time. Dinner was truly superb. Carmel filled the table with salads and condiments to accompany the lamb, after which Pat forced all of us to have multiple desserts. I almost forgot to mention the other neat stuff. Remember the Island Morgan Cell logo in the previous Mogazine??? Carmel had turned these into swell firewall magnets for our Morgans. In addition, the lucky ones also scored Mogcell 1-shirts. Good on you Carmel. Barb and I soon departed for our motel with in-room plumbing and a color TV, while most of the rest had authentic Canadian.

Sunday morning broke with bright sunny skies. We motored one stop light down the road to the Gilbert's, where we joined Bill and Fay Sterne, and Yvonne and Ron Theroux for breakfast. After washing the cars, we proceeded to the Father's Day Picnic and All British Car Meet. It was a beautifully casual event, and with 19 cars, Morgans were the Marque of the Day. People not previously mentioned include Nancy and Dick Dice, Geri and Bill Button, Bert McCabe and Ruth Wynn, Drew Irwin and Lady Lori, Ted Carew-Gibson, Ric MacDonald and Glenda Bowley, Rosemarie Powley, Jonathan and Dale Russell, Jim and Mavis Bayer, Stu Rulka and daughter, Rocky Rochfort, Lars Junker, and John Johnson. Lunch was another gourmet event arranged by the Gilberts and the Thomsons The only award at this Field Meet is the prize for the Car you would most want to drive home. After lengthy negotiations with the organizer (Jim Walters' Daimler is really a Morgan on steroids) and with the condolences of the Jaguar team, it was agreed that the award would go to a Morgan, naturally. The selection committee agreed that all of the Mogs were great. To settle the tie and get on with the voting, it was decided that the LOUDEST Morgan would be the selectee.

Departing the Picnic, we motored Northward with a brief stop for petrol. Pressing on, while trying to match Roland's driving skill, we soon arrived at

the Horseshoe Bay Inn in Chemainus, "The Little Town that Did". Herein began the musical shuffle, with everyone maneuvering for in-room plumbing as compared to in-door plumbing. Meanwhile, Mike P. and Geri Button were discussing who should get the big bed and who would get the little bed. Having settled sleeping arrangements, most people took a short tour of the town. Vespers were performed outside on the patio while dinner cooked on the Barby. Dinner was baked stuffed salmon and lots of other stuff. The highlight of the evening was presentation of the Picnic award by Jim Walters to the loudest Morgan of all - Bert McCabe.

Monday morning was breakfast in Chemainus, and lots of shopping. I really would recommend a trip there; they've really done a marvelous job of re-engineering themselves as a tourist haven. Stay at the Horseshoe Bay Inn, they were super people. Well its lOam, and we're off again, this time to Lantzville for a pleasant but uneventful lunch. Of course after lunch Bert discovered that his right front tire was dead flat. Bill Sterne rescued the day with his spiffy little electric tire pump that plugged into his cigar lighter. A cigar lighter in a Morgan? It must be a Plus 8 thing. While Bert was having his tire repaired, we pressed on to Quallicum Beach for a surprise stop at Lydia Sterne's residence. It was a grand visit enjoyed by Lydia, her friends, and all the Moganeers. Back on the road we headed for Port Alberni were we topped off, and checked the cars in preparation for the great "over the top" run to Tofino. By this time we had lost several cars and were down to the hard-core tour folks, including the Gilberts, Woody Thomson, the Dices, the Buttons, the Stegens, Bert and Ruth, the Sternes, Drew and Lon, the Pot, and the Therouxs. Seeing only black clouds, some of us opted for hood up. The rest took a chance, and were rewarded with light rain and spectacular views. The only mishap was my wipers suddenly stopped during the heaviest mist. Powley lead me down the mountain until the rain stopped. We all arrived at the Weigh West Marine Seaside Resort (that name must have been a marketeers invention) at 5pm, whereupon my wipers just as suddenly started working again. We were treated to a repeat of the Mike and Geri shuffle, Geri winning yet again. The motel provided covered parking in the wooden boat shed, very symbolic. Dinner was another great meal, this time crab, shrimp and oysters. The volume of verbal abuse did get a bit out of hand, and Ron Theroux had to promise the management that Roland, Bert, Mike, and Gil will not be allowed to sit at the same table ever again.( I promise not at that table in that restaurant). We watched a late golden sunset, and closed a truly great tour. Thank you to Woody, Carmel, Pat, and Roland.
