We got a lot of business transacted at the 2nd Quarter Meeting in Olympia on June 13. Although the minutes are printed in this issue of the Mogazine there are several items which should be mentioned:

Please note that we have set a deadline of July 20 for orders for the brass boat anchor badge. 2. Also note that the club decided to participate at the Pacific Northwest Historic Races

at Seattle International Raceway on Sunday, July 5, in Kent, Washington. Dennis Morrison, Gil Stegen and I called all of the members in the Seattle area: we will have at least 11 cars on display in an area reserved for Morgans. Twelve car clubs will be participating and at the noon break we get to take a few laps around the track. It is probably worth the drive from British Columbia or Oregon (or California, or Idaho?) to watch Dennis and Dave Cammarano race.

3. Current and future officers will be relieved to hear that Dave Sweeney reports (via Bitsy) that officers are not liable at club events for misconduct or negligence by other club members. Officers are liable should they affirmatively create a situation which results in harm to others. What this means, I think, is that if we use common sense we won't get into trouble.

The Habedank and Hauge tour to Mt. St. Helens was a huge success (see the report by Mike Powley in this issue). The trip up the back way (along the Columbia River and then up through the national forest) is worth the price of admission itself. The road is great (with only a short stretch of gravel) because very few people use it, it has no cross roads, and because it has many curves posted with 15, 20 and 25 mph signs which can be driven at 30, 40, and 50. There was a lot of tire squealing (or was that you, Louise?) We were pleased to meet John and Traci Hammer from Eugene riding in their 1981 4/4. John drove behind us for awhile, and I couldn't accelerate any faster that he could: I thought maybe the Plus 8 was getting tired. But at a rest stop I saw the telltale gauge on the dash of the 4/4: "Turbo Pressure." Rick, Lin, Bob, and Janis really put together a good one. Thanks, you guys!

Next up: the races at SIR and the Bellevue All Brit. -Dick Dice

a MINUTES OF THE SECOND QUARTERLY MEETING, MOG-NW, HELD JUNE 13, 1992 IN OLYMPIA WASHINGTON AT THE

CAMMARANO BROTHERS WAREHOUSE.

The meeting was called to order at approximately 10:30 a.m. by President Dick Dice. Attending were:

Bob and Janis Hauge, Jacque Morrison, Dave (and later Sharon) Cammarano, Rick Habedank, Gil Stegen,

Mike Amos, and Nancy Dice.

Dick reported that Secretary Bitsy Miles was ill, and in her place Nancy would take minutes. The

minutes of the first quarterly meeting are lost somewhere in the wilds of the Miles house.

Treasurer Janis Hauge reported that we have 122 paid members as of June 13. Sending reminder

postcards brought in 16 renewals, so was worth every stamp. The balance in the treasury (after the

end of the meeting) was $1,949.10. Bob Hauge (analyst) reported that our income is up on

membership, ads in the newsletter and regalia sales (compared to our projections in January) and our

expenses are less on the Mogazine and All-Brits so far, but are up on regalia costs. Over-all, were

right on our target budget.

The regalia discussion centered on the production of a new edition of the boat anchor car badge.

Daryl Ozuna had done some research on alternative foundries and costs. In the end we

moved/seconded/carried (MSC) to go to a foundry which will make badges from our old molds. We can

order in small lots as few as 20 at a time. It was MSC to order 10 more than we have orders on hand

at a cutoff date. It was MSC that we print the cut-off date (July 20) in the Mogazine. Cost will be

$18 per badge until that date, $22 after. It was MSC that the foundry will mark the badges somehow

on the back so that they will be distinguished from the older (collectors item) version. If the

foundry is unable to do this the officers will gather at an Emergency Inscribing Session and do it

ourselves.

Other regalia questions: Mike Amos will restock our dwindling supplies by ordering 2 dozen Grady

Meyers tees and 2 dozen 41 zip sweatshirts in assorted colors, mostly larger sizes. We sold more at

the Vancouver All-Brit than expected and have run out of some we needed.

A brief discussion ensued about the true value of the Clubs assets; we should remember that we not

only have the savings account but also have the value of regalia on hand. Bob Hauge does not want

to get into a complicated business approach to assets, but Mike Amos will bring figures to the

meetings to compare our regalia holdings/sales over the year to give us a better idea of where we

stand.

Plans for the Seattle (Bellevue) All-Brit are underway. Jacque reported on the needs for the Friday

night banquet, the food for the lunch at the meet, and how the cars should be placed on the field.

Gil Stegen pointed out that the viewers seem to like an "interesting' placement of the cars so that

they can take better pictures. Our cars will be divided by class (4/4, +4, +8).

The 4th of July races at SIR will give us a chance to promote the club. We will set up our tent and

banner and have a picnic on the Sunday, July 5, finals day. Cars should try to get to SIR by 9:30,

but later is OK. You will be admitted for the cut-rate of $5 per person if you bring your Morgan.

You will also be able to take a test drive on the course if you wish during the lunch break, so

don't be late! Be sure to bring your own lunch and something to drink. SIR is a great place to watch

racing -- and to cheer for Dennis Morrison and Dave Cammarano as they zip past everybody else. The

club will have a chance to win a prize for our booth/display.

We have no volunteer to run the Club's activities during the Portland All-Brit yet.

The holiday party plans are progressing; Bitsy is waiting for the menues and costs from the

Beaverton location.

Rick and Bob say that there will be 10 or more cars for the Mt. St. Helens trip.

We need to persue a question about Club liability for injuries/accidents on our club-sponsored

events. Could we be sued by a disgruntled motorist? Could officers and their wives be liable?

Dick will find out more.

Daryl Ozuna reports that the SoCal Morgan club is publishing many years' worth of technical articles

from their newsletter. We will wait and see a copy before deciding what to do with it. (Copies, how

many, what to charge, etc etc.)

The meeting adjourned to The Office for burgers and beer. Res. Sub., Nancy Dice, Acting Sec.

MOUNT ST. HELENS THE HARDWAY . . . or A VISIT TO THE LAND OF THE KILLER CHIPMUNKS

On Friday June 19th it was a dark and stormy night ('er afternoon) - all - good stories start out that way - however it was raining in Vancouver as

the Powleys left for the Mount St. Helens the HARD WAY event.

Checked in with Dices for the AN wake-up - and a terrible time they wanted us at 5:00AM to arrive at HQ for 8:00AM muster gad! what an hour. Believe it or not it was cold - we were to meet at the Dice house but due to their eagerness and our lateness they met us at the entrance to 3rd Place (they said it was because they didn't want us to wake the baby) A VERY COOL drive down was welcome (what would you expect at that hour!) and we picked up the Jewetts just outside of South Gate to make our little northern contingent complete. - no Morrisons - Dennis was in S.I.R. race preparation - too bad.

Due to the "driving" Dices we actually made it to "AN Feeding Station" as called so by GENERAL Habedank (actually the Stagecoach Rest.) where we had our own private briefing room. (Good idea, as a group of 18 MOG owners in feeding frenzy, even at a breakfast is not a pretty sight to the uninitiated.) Speaking of which we met new Eugene located members John & Traci Hammer (1981 propane 4/4, owned by former lady club member <looking for-a-man apparently> - her loss the Hammers gain), they were now, at least initiated as far as our eating style was concerned!

Luckily General Habedank on the Marching Orders had laid down a disclaimer, the Itinerary was as such, but in small print had declared, "but don't place any bets" - right he was! as the scheduled

-- departure time was delayed about 1 hour due to the groups usual garrulous habits slowing down the feeding process.

Mid eating, however, General H. and his Lieutenant Bob Hauge proceeded with the pre-trip briefing which was so dramatic that our daughter, veteran of bouncing back seat 'Morganing' (Calif 1 90) was even impressed with the level of fear and respect for the rigours of the trip that the two organizers were able to instil into the group - so much so that ALL of the members even stopped talking/eating and listened to the marching orders as given in print and reviewed - (likely a first here)

The day was beautiful and once underway - including the Miles other Morgan-ana-wanna-be the Fiero (always comforting having something dependable to follow along) - General Habedank in the lead and Lieutenant Hauge bringing up the rear - with the Miles a respectful several car lengths behind the tour - we began.

Almost immediately our worst incident of the trip occurred when the road was blocked due to what initially was reported as a very serious accident down the road. Having organized a tour or two my heart went out to Bob and Rick as these unexpected glitches can ruin everything. Fortunately it was not as bad as initially expected and with a minor delay we were on our way to The Bonneville dam for 000hs & ahhhs and potty stops - great stuff!

Carson was, as the AN briefing indicated, to be our last stop in the civilized part of southern Washington, particularly for the propane junkies. On to the Eagle Cliffs emporium to stock-up on any further drinks, food etc. Very necessary as there had already been several grumblings from the troops as nearly 1 1/2 hours had passed without any major repast being offered. ... on to page 2

As General Habedank had predicted on the itinerary we barely escaped there with our wallets intact and headed for the dreaded Mount St. Helens - the group goaded on and made fearless only by the promise of nearly mile high "tourist cuisine". Much of which was consumed by a large gang of very cheeky Chipmunks, some as big as Dwight Smith.

After this sumptuous repast we headed for the top.

All through the assent the operative word was DEVASTATION - everything was ash white and what was left of the trees were neatly placed "all-fall-down-now" style - dead ducks in row fashion.

To add to the ambiance of this wall to wall DEVASTATION the day was proving to be a HOT one indeed - arrival at WINDY RIDGE, so named for its well known light balmy zephyrs, the quaking group (watch the pun!) were face to face with the big hole, the big dome, and DEVASTATION - moonscape and real (not for the taking) pumice all over the place. Here we were treated to a 20 minute talk by the park guide and got filled in on the hows and why-f ores of the event that happened 12 years past. (silly Truman). Some among the group took on the extra challenge of climbing up many stairs to a look-out point so they could see a full 360 degree panorama of DEVASTATION, the rest of us older ones, content with just progressive 180 degree peeks (watch that pun again) of DEVASTATION entertained the many, many touristas' enquiries about what were these funny little cars and how-did-they-get-here questions. (Very unusual, but we did not sign-up any new members.)

An aside must be noted here, in that not one of the funny little cars burped out with that usual brown to green coloured tea that is so often produced after such a rigorous climb and run such as this, can you believe 4,000 +++ feet, without incident, must be a first - Even Ken and Pat were incredulous that such a miracle could have happened.

After soaking in this howling ambience for awhile, even the most inquisitive of the group had got enough DEVASTATION for the day and now with Lieutenant Bob in the lead it was time head back and continue on to the Pine Creek Visitors Center, the run down as paced by Bob was delightful and easy on the MOGS water works even in the heat.

Arriving back at Woodland for good-byes (it was now nearly 6:30PM, the northern bunch felt we would prefer to push on to the Kelso Red Lion Inn to eat and forsake the bunch that went to the Oak Tree restaurant, this was hard for us to do as missing a major group feed is not our style, but being up since 4:30AM was beginning to take its toll. The Jewetts hoped to get a room with us but confounded by the Joseph and Mary syndrome had to push on to Seattle. The Dices and Powleys did the Club proud at the dinner, especially Dick's desert (ask him about it if you dare). For the next day we then decided to find a way 'round the dreaded 1-5, and with the Dices excellent navigational skills we had a most pleasant and easy on the machines drive back for a cool beer in Bellevue.

Many thanks to the Hauges and the Habedanks for such a well organized interesting and fun event..., and yes Rick you are on the short list for the soon to be introduced Jack & Jean Memorial Rough Riders Trophy.

Ii Letter sent to Mike Powley from author Sky Lee (Disappearing Moon Caf

June 13, 1992

Mike Powley 4149 Pine Crescent Van.,B.C., V63 41<8

Dear Mike:

Thank you for the note of encouragement. You know, the most wonderful thing about getting a book out there is the great response I get from people. You particularly made me grin because I can tell you're a great one for the nostalgia of Vancouver as it used to be. Aah, the days of youth.

I want to tell you how I came to admire Morgans and Morgan-owners for that matter. I used to hitchhike into UBC at the bottom of the 10th Ave. hill. And several times, Morgan-owners picked me up. (Imagine, one may have been you.) Their balmy attitudes were certainly not wasted on me, an impressionable kid from the east end.

I don't know if I know cars. I've had boyfriends from Surrey, who were into Mustangs and Ford trucks. I've gone through the hippy dippy years in Nelson, with Volksies, and motorcycles. Learned how to drive in a Cutlass Supreme. Hung out with Volvos. The years go by, I've gone all feminist in Toyotas. But if I were to admit to a secret fantasy, it would be that I would have loved to tinker with cars. And I probably would have been good at it.

Good luck to you and all Morgan admirers. I hope you continue to pick up interesting asian women from the side of the road.

Yours

Another excellent cartoon from Harry Miltner - his remark "3 guesses who this is". Well let me see - Flat rad - loves to explore back roads - patient loving wife who thinks he may be a little crazy - a couple in Salem comes to mind but then change Morgans and it could be any one of us!!
