On behalf of the Vistancia development team, we would like to congratulate the administration, staff and students

of Vistancia Elementary School for earning the coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for exemplary high-performance by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. This recognition represents one of the most honorable awards a school can receive nationally for its academic excellence and high levels of achievement and we could not be more proud of the teachers and students for their efforts in achieving this prestigious honor.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Award is presented to schools across the nation who have the highest achieving students – top 15 percent statewide – in English and Math, as measured by state assessments. Nationwide, 335 schools earned the prestigious honor and Vistancia Elementary School was one of just four Arizona schools that made the list.

Vistancia’s on-site schools are a vital component of the Vistancia master plan and livelihood for our residents. Recognition such as this confirms we are on track with our vision to create an extraordinary community connected through a distinctive mix of excelling schools, parks and trails, lifestyle experiences and home styles.

For more information about Vistancia, visit www.vistancia.com or call 623.933.6233. The Vistancia Information Center is open 7 days a week from 10 AM – 5 PM and is located at the guard-gated entrance of Blackstone at Vistancia.

Congratulations to vistancia elementary for earning National blue ribbon Schools Award

enhancing Your Landscape with Holiday Lights

As you enter the big box stores around town and see all of the latest and greatest decorations for sale, you are quickly reminded holidays are fast approaching. Thoughts

jump to planning your annual holiday party, family and friends coming to visit, or wanting to have the best looking lights in your neighborhood.

Driving past a home where lights were a last minute thought are easy to spot. We have listed some tips below to help you enjoy the decorating journey by making it a fun, festive, and family activity.

Keep these things in mind as you plan, purchase, and execute:• Map out your scheme carefully before installation.

• Use only light strings and extension cords approved for outdoor use.

• Strings are designed to plug into each other to create long runs, but never use more than three strings on any one run.

• Plug light strings into same-length strings. Don’t mix and match strings of different lengths — the wires are rated for different amperages.

• Measure the distance carefully and write everything down so you’ll only have to make one trip to the store. If you need a measurement for spiraling up a Saguaro or tree trunk, wrap a string around it, then lay the string flat to measure the length you’ll need.

• String your lights in the evening, with your light plugged in so you can see the effect as you build your light scheme.

• Get everyone involved! The more you involve the family, or even neighborhood, in the decorating process, the more smiles you get. And the end, isn’t that what it’s all about?

Please be mindful of the CC&R’s that are in place regarding the timing of install and removal of holiday lights & decorations.

Care to know tip: In late November we can start to see temperatures dip to the freezing mark at night. Be sure to have a plan to cover and protect frost sensitive plants.

SSince you have been gone we have been addressing numerous issues that come with the end of summer and the

beginning of the “not summer” season.

• Many plants were scorched and dried up. Several unapproved plants went in and several more came out.

• Many guests inadvertently parked their vehicles in front of their neighbor’s homes.

• Barking dog concerns are still being addressed as are the house painting projects.

It’s been pretty busy, but all in all its been a productive and enriching time. Now that you are back, we look forward to working with you in the preservation, maintenance and enhancement of our beautiful community. Please take some time to assess your property and do any trimming, painting or planting as needed. This is true for all our neighbors; please take a moment and walk your property and make an effort to do what ever is necessary to bring that extra little appeal to your property, neighborhood and community.

Thank you again for your time and efforts. Enjoy the weather and beautiful Vistancia.

Pumpkin Yogurt Parfait By Vanessa Rodriguez Coppola of www.SeeVanessaCraft.com

B reak out the chunky scarves and eat everything pumpkin, Fall is finally here! It’s my favorite time of year, probably because us Arizonians can finally see the light at the end

of the 110+ degree weather tunnel! I especially love Fall recipes, did I mention pumpkin everything?! I’m showing you how to make my new favorite snack, a pumpkin yogurt parfait. It’s easy to make and so yummy! My kids can usually share a jar between the both of them and mama gets to eat their leftovers. I like making 2 jars when I make this recipe, so I can store 1 away in the fridge for the next day. This recipe is also great for a quick and easy, on the go breakfast!

INGreDIeNTS (makes 2 pint sized jars)• Pumpkin Puree 15oz Can• 2 Greek Yogurts (Individual servings)• 4 Nature Valley Crunchy Oats N Honey Granola Bar• 3 Teaspoons Pumpkin Pie Spice• 2 Teaspoons Cinnamon• 3 Tablespoons Maple Syrup

DIreCTIoNSStep 1: Mix the pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, sugar and syrup together.

Step 2: Place 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree mixture into the bottom of a pint sized mason jar.

Step 3: Layer half of the container of yogurt into the jar, topped with 1 crushed Crunchy Oats N Honey Granola Bar.

Step 4: Continue layering pumpkin mixture, yogurt and a second crushed granola all the way to the top of the jar.

Step 5: Repeat step 1-5 for a second jar. Add a couple spoons and enjoy this Fall favorite recipe!

November News At vistancia elementary

October was full of Fall fun and excitement at Vistancia Elementary

School. We were announced a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School and will be accepting our award in Washington D.C.

in November. Thank you to our staff, students, families, and community members for all of your support and making Vistancia Elementary a great place for students to learn! Please continue to come out and support our school in November with the many more exciting events that will be taking place!

Liberty High School Students raise money for breast Cancer Awareness

By Christopher Le

During the month of October, Liberty High School students went all-in to support the national movement

promoting Breast Cancer Awareness. Clubs across campus pitched in with a variety of

different fundraisers to help raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness groups.

The fundraisers came in all shapes and sizes. Teachers could pay money to wear jeans and pink shirts all week long. Students were asking for monetary donations of any denomination, adorning the doors of classrooms that donated with sizable pink ribbons.

Some of the most lucrative fundraisers done in the name of Pink Week came from the students of Marketing teacher/DECA advisor Timothy McLaughlin and Culinary Arts teacher Jeffrey Stanhill.

Stanhill’s Culinary Arts Club students, along with a few of his advanced students, take a passionate ownership of their cakepop fundraiser. “Some kids [show] up at six [in the morning] to get the cake pops ready…a number of kids [ask] and receive permission from second hour teachers to stay in the kitchen and help out. They are all very enthusiastic [since they] know that this is for a great cause,” says Stanhill.

Stanhill’s students have done this for the past five years and it is always wildly successful. Through the first four days of sales, Stanhill’s students were able to make and sell over 2000 cakepops at fifty cents apiece.

McLaughlin, for the past two years, has run the same fundraiser and students love it. If students donate enough money, with all

proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, McLaughlin will dye his beard and hair pink. Oh, and he’ll shave his hair into a Mohawk too.

“Last year, my students asked if they could dye my beard pink in honor of Pink Week. So, as we were all attempting to raise funds for the cause, I agreed to dye my beard, but only if they were able to raise at least $100. They then set a stretch goal of $500, which included the matching pink Mohawk,” says McLaughlin. After last year’s lucrative haul, McLaughlin and his students went for the fundraiser again.

This year, the group raised $619.75. It’s not just a mindless fundraiser either, students are earning valuable marketing knowledge from the experience. “[The students] had to practice their solicitation skills and prepare a “sales pitch” before they could go around to collect donations. They had to explain why they were trying to fundraise, and what the money would be used for,” McLaughlin said.

But there’s more. Community partner and local car dealership Liberty Buick offered to match all campus donations towards breast cancer. That means any and all funds raised by Liberty students and clubs will effectively be doubled thanks to Liberty Buick. Liberty staff, students, and community partners continue to work to make a positive difference. McLaughlin put it best, saying, “The truth is, [the students] are pretty amazing. They are learning to be positive and productive members of society, but just as we did at their age, they need some guidance...we talk about the importance of having some fun, but really helping to support a great cause at the same time.”

M any times my monthly tip for the followers of Vistancia Living and the AZ Golfer are from personal

experience. This month’s tip is no different. We all have areas of the game that we struggle

with, looking for the secret to success. Putting is a key to every golfer’s game. When you are asked how you played, the common response is “I hit the ball well but my putting was off.” Here is a sure cure to some of your putting woes.

In the past I have talked about how to line up putts and the importance of line and speed are all you need. It is never the long putts that are missed that worry the golfer. It is the short putts; 5 to 6 feet and in that make or break a round.

With this in mind, go through your usual pre-shot routine for putting long putts and make it your goal to get the ball to get into a 6 to 12 inch circle around the hole. First of all, thinking this way you will be amazed at how many putts actually go in. If you should happen to miss, do not fear that short putt any longer.

For your longer putts, grip the club to its full length just like when

Shorten Up Your Putter By Greg Ellis, General Manager, Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia

you hit full golf shots. When you get over the putt that is 5 to 6 feet from the hole and in, choke down on the putter about 3 inches. The reason for this is similar to when you chip around the green. By choking down on the putter 3 inches, you will have more control of the putter and be able to make shorter more controlled strokes and keep the putter on line. If you have chosen the correct line, this will insure that the ball can stay on your line and go in the hole. The longer the putting stroke, on the short putts, the more chance there is for a deceleration into the ball and the putter face getting offline. Choking down on the putter will allow you much more solid struck putts when attempting those important winning putts.

If you have any trouble with this tip or have any questions about the golf swing, please feel free to email me at the Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia at [email protected].

Make sure to tune in to the Bunker to Bunker Golf Show every Saturday morning from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. on ArizonaSports 98.7 or on the internet at www.arizonasports.com for more tips and updates on all of the week’s golfing news in the Valley and around the world. T ry this delicious Thanksgiving Turkey and Leek Shepherd’s Pie for your post-holiday left over meal! Featuring some of the season’s most celebrated ingredients, this recipe adds a

little extra comfort to this treasured holiday.

Thanksgiving Turkey and Leek Shepherd’s Pie By Chef Steven Duarte at Blackstone Country Club

>>> bLACkSTONe COuNTry CLub

Filling:2 Tsp Olive Oil 2 Ea Large leeks, white and

light green parts diced1 ½ C Carrots, diced3 Ea Garlic cloves, minced1/3 C Dry white wine 3 Tbls All-purpose flour2 Tsp Fresh sage, chopped2 C Chicken stock2 C Turkey breast, diced1 C Frozen peas¼ Tsp Kosher salt Fresh ground pepper

to taste

mashed Potatoes:2 LB Yukon Gold potatoes,

peeled and diced large¾ C Buttermilk¼ Tsp Kosher salt Fresh ground pepper

to taste1 Ea Large egg, lightly

beaten1 Tbls Extra virgin olive oil

To prepare filling, pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, add leeks and carrots. Cook stirring often until leeks soften. Add garlic and cook until lightly browned. Pour in wine and allow to reduce. Add flour and fresh sage, stirring constantly until flour begins to lightly brown. Stir in stock and bring to a soft simmer, stirring constantly until it begins to thicken enough to coat a spoon. Add turkey and peas, season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer mixture to a 2 quart baking dish and set aside.

To make mashed potatoes, place potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with cold salted water, cover and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook until potatoes are tender, drain and return potatoes to pan, cover and shake the pan over low heat until the potatoes are dry. Remove from heat. Mash the potatoes with a masher adding enough buttermilk to make smooth. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in egg and olive oil. Spread with potatoes over the top of the turkey mixture with the back of a spoon. Set the dish on a baking sheet and bake until the potatoes are golden brown, approximately 25-30 minutes. Makes approx. 4-5 servings.

As the temperatures start to cool down, more of us will be out riding our bikes. With our clean roads and beautiful scenery we often take our responsibilities behind the wheel for granted. It is important that we share the road with individual and bicycle club riders. I am working with the city’s engineering department, as well as local riding clubs, to help raise awareness and develop safer biking opportunities for residents, especially near the Happy Valley Road bridge. Over the next few months I hope to share with you some ideas that will improve cycling safety in our community. Until then, watch out for bikes!

For those looking for other activities, there are two noteworthy events to pay attention to in November. On Nov. 1, taste the savory selections at Eight’s Great FoodFest at Trilogy and Vistancia from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be cooking demonstrations, beer and wine tastings and live entertainment. Purchase tickets at www.azpbs.org/foodfest. In remember-ance of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, Peoria residents will get the first glimpse of one artist’s effort to honor an icon of that era. On Nov. 5-7, 2015, the inaugural exhibition of Take Me Home

Huey will be at the Rio Vista Recreation Center. Take Me Home Huey is a multimedia art project created by artist Steve Maloney from the remains of a U.S. Army Huey helicopter that was shot down in 1969 during a medi-cal rescue in Vietnam. This art project uses a Huey helicop-

ter that was found in an Arizona boneyard by Light Horse Legacy (LHL), a non-profit focused on post-traumatic stress. LHL researched, re-skinned and restored the helicopter for Maloney, who then repurposed it into art for healing. PTSD workshops will also be coupled with this event and then the installation will begin a cross-country tour Nov. 8.

Also, don’t forget the mid-decade census count started Oct. 1. State and federal tax funds are distributed through city governments from the state of Arizona and they are based on population numbers. Cities, like Peoria, use the money to help operate police and fire departments, emer-gency response services, waste collection, and road and sidewalk mainte-nance, among other things. Peoria has grown since the last census in 2010, so this special, mid-decade census will help Peoria residents receive their fair share of state and federal funds. Enumerators, who are mostly residents from your communities, will be walking throughout Peoria communities to gather basic information from residents. Remember, the special census counts are only conducted in person so open your door and be counted!

C an I share with you a joyful moment? I walked into briefing the other day and the Shift Sergeant was sharing how he

and other officers participated in the Vistancia Cookie Contest. As I looked around the room

everyone had a smile on their face. They were happy they had an opportunity to engage with the community and taste some good old fashion bake goods. This is the type of interaction we desire as a police department, we want you to see us as a part of your community as it spawns a great relationship for communication. All four of the judges (Officer Meeks, Officer Antrim, Officer Taylor and Sergeant Gormley) said the competition was tough and can’t wait to judge next year’s contest. They better make room for one more judge—me! Congratulations to this year’s winner Ms. Amanda James and I would also like to thank your Lifestyle Director, Melissa Parsons for inviting us. We have such a great partnership with Vistancia.

September showed little crime. I am concerned about the one burglary that occurred because it fits a typical theme—the garage door was left open and a minor object was taken. This is a crime that more than likely could have been prevented with a simple security measure—close the door. We will continue with this message as

>>> pOLICe beAT

following it will decrease your chances of victimization. Lieutenant Leah Ray has been providing weekly police tips in The Village at Vistancia Association News Eblast. I will have her re-address open garage doors in the upcoming police tips.

As always you all have a very safe/secure community and we need your help in keeping it that way. Please report any suspicious activity to the police department by calling our non-emergency number (623-773-8311) or for emergencies (911).

Thank you all for letting us be a part of your community and remember lock your vehicles, secure your home/valuables, keep your garage doors closed when not in use and stay safe.
