SUNDAY SOCIAL HOUR SUMMER SCHEDULE
This Sunday, June 9th, the Coffee Social will be
hosted by the Pastoral Council. This will be the final
Sunday Coffee Hour until September. Due to
vacation schedules of volunteers during the summer
months, the Sunday Coffee Hour will take a break
and resume in the Fall on September 8, 2019 when
everyone has returned from their summer activities.
We want to thank all who have so generously
volunteered for this ministry and hope you return
refreshed to volunteer again in September.
BIBLE STUDY
This fall, the parish is preparing to offer a bible study
on the Gospel of Mark. There is the possibility of
offering both a morning and evening session. We
would like to get an idea of how many folks would
be interested. It is an eighteen week course and the
study guide would cost each participant $40. See
below for more specific information about the
course. If you are interested in participating this fall,
please email ([email protected]) your
name and preferred time so we can begin to plan.
The gospel of Mark has long been regarded as the
authoritative teaching of Peter, composed by his
follower, Mark. This study is a deep dive into this
most foundational book of the Bible. Catholic
Scripture Study at its finest.
In this engaging eighteen-week study, join Fr.
Patrick Winslow, JCL, and Michael Pakaluk, PhD,
as they examine this compelling introduction to the
Christ. See Jesus through the eyes of Peter.
Experience him first as a “worker of mighty deeds”
who expels demons and heals the sick, who teaches
that the Kingdom of God has arrived in power. And
learn with Peter why it was necessary for the Christ
to suffer.
In Mark you
will find:
Extensive
commentary that opens up the meaning of the
entire biblical text
Powerful teaching videos with an in-depth look
at a particular passage each week
Questions to help you reflect on the biblical text
and how to apply it to your life
Supplemental readings from the Catechism,
Church teachings, and the saints
And much, much more!

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Thank you for all your gifts
Please remember your parish in your will.
One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their
diversity, each listener heard God’s word in his or
her own language. The meaning for stewardship
is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by
the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the
needs of our brothers and sisters,
whatever they may be.
STEWARDSHIP OF TIME
Thank you to all of those stewards
who serve so faithfully.

the parish ministries, please visit the information

NEWLY REGISTERED IN THE PARISH?
Don’t forget to pick up your welcome bag
at the Welcome Desk
IT’S IMPORTANT TO REGISTER.
Parish Registration is the official way to join a parish
community. Many people think that because they
attend a particular parish they automatically belong.
At times young adults who have moved away for
years think they are still signed up under their
parents. But membership requires signing up,
formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration
is a commitment to a community, a way to be
included in the religious, social, and ministerial
activities of our parish. Registration shows you
belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like
scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor
certificates, and getting donation statements for tax
purposes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count
on you, to call on you to assist in its mission.
Registering in the parish is a statement of faith and
confidence in the life and work of our parish.

An Adoption Story
By Kate Moscato Leen
Have you ever woken up one morning and
known the day is going to be one of the most
important days of your life? Maybe it was your
wedding day, or the birth of a child. On Sunday,
June 2, I got to have one of those days, and it
was one I never really expected I’d get to have.
On that day, I hopped on a plane down to
central Oregon and walked into the waiting
arms of my birth mother. After connecting
through Ancestry DNA, we began to slowly
email, then Facetime regularly, and finally plan
a visit.
Through our conversations I’ve had a chance to
get to know her side of my adoption story, which
has been moving, sad, joyful, and filled me with
gratitude. When she got pregnant in
Portland in 1977, she was 25 and single. There
were no practical resources for single mothers.
She and her boyfriend had broken up, and
beyond giving her a little money and eventually
signing the adoption papers, he was not
supportive. She had to hide her pregnancy at
work as long as she could before she would have
to go on unpaid maternity leave. She had no
money, and no healthcare. She had every reason
to not continue the pregnancy.
But, as someone who was brought up Catholic she
knew that I was a person, and that any
mistakes she made or circumstances she found
herself in were not my fault. She wanted me to
live, and to have better than she could provide for
me. She found an organization called Birthright,
and through them she arranged for a closed
adoption with my parents. A volunteer called
her every week to see how she was doing and
if she needed anything, and they set her up with an
OB who provided her with free care, a
therapist who gave her free counseling, and
made sure she had maternity clothes and
anything else she needed.
When I was born, the doctor asked if she
would like to hold me, and she tearfully
declined. She said that she knew if she had
held me she wouldn’t have been able to give
me up, and she knew that that was what was
best for me. The amount of love she exhibited in
that moment is hard to quantify. She shattered
her own heart so that I could have everything she
knew I needed.
Life went on. Within a decade, she had found her
husband, and they went on to have three children
of their own, which she said was an enormously
healing experience. She is a faithful, dedicated
member of her local parish and has developed
a deep and personal faith, and it’s obvious that her
friends, husband and children all love and admire
her greatly. Very few people in her life beyond her
family knew about her giving up a child for
adoption. One of the wonderful things she has
experienced with our reunion is a loosening of that
shame. As she has told me, now she wants to
practically shout it all from the rooftops! I’m so
happy that I could help her even a little with this
freedom and joy she’s experiencing now.
For my part, one of the great joys of my life
has been getting to tell her in person, “Thank you.
Thank you for giving me life when it seemed
impossible, for giving my parents a daughter,
for giving my husband a wife, for making it
possible that my children exist.” And when we
cried on each other’s shoulders at the airport on
Sunday, I couldn’t help but think about the words
of St. Paul:
“At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but
then face to face. At present I know partially;
then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. So
faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the
greatest of these is love.”
