VISCOPLEX® Additives for environmentally friendly lubricant formulations

Evonik Oil Additives is a leading global supplier of high-performance VISCOPLEX® lubricant additives and VISCOBASE® synthetic base fluids for use in automotive and industrial lubricants. We also produce dewaxing aids used in refinery processing and cold flow improvers for biodiesel. We form part of the Coatings & Additives business unit of Evonik Industries, a market leader in specialty chemicals.

Our broad line of Viscosity Index Improvers (VIIs) and Pour Point Depressants (PPDs), derived from proprietary polyalkyl methacrylate (PAMA) technology, helps formulators achieve fuel efficiency targets and cold flow optimization. Our Cold Flow Improvers (CFIs) alter the problematic cold flow properties of biodiesel and our dewaxing aids boost process efficiency through optimized solvent dewaxing. Viscosity Index ImprovementVISCOPLEX® Series 10 additives are polymethacrylate polymers that increase the viscosity more at high temperatures and less at low temperatures. This is particularly desirable in environmentally friendly lubricants when wide operating temperature ranges are needed.

Shear Stable ThickeningVISCOPLEX® Series 10 additives can be used to adjust the viscosity of vegetable and synthetic base oils. Products are available to meet the shear stability requirements of various lubricant applications. Because these products are made and delivered in biodegradable diluent oils, the environmental characteristics of the finished lubricant are not affected.

Pour Point and Cold Temperature FluidityBiobased and biodegradable lubricant oils have particular challenges for cold temperature storage. VISCOPLEX® Series 10 additives are designed to improve the simple pour point (ASTM D97) performance of these oils, but also to stabilize the fluidity under conditions of extended cold temperature storage. They allow lubricant oils to remain fluid for up to two weeks at -30°C and up to four weeks at -25°C.

VISCOPLEX® Series 10 additives are viscosity index improvers or pour point depressants developed for use in environmentally friendly fluids such as rapeseed, canola, soy or other vegetable oils, polyglycols or synthetic esters. Their molecular weight and alkyl distribution are adjusted to the special requirements of the environmentally compatible base fluids.

BiodegradabilityVISCOPLEX® 10-310 and VISCOPLEX® 10-950 are biodegradable according to CEC L-33-A-93 (90.7% and 87.9% biodegradation).

Readily biodegradable blends according to OECD 301B can be formulated with all mineral oil–free VISCOPLEX® 10 Series additives.
