Evonik’s VISCOPLEX® additives and VISCOBASE® base oils for automotive applications
Driving for efficiency with DRIVON™ technology
Evonik’s DRIVON™ technology is a collection of products, formulation concepts and services that Evonik provides to customers in need of resource-efficient automotive lubricants. DRIVON™ lubricant technology from Evonik contributes to enhanced fuel economy and emission reduction in a wide range of vehicles – cars and trucks, as well as buses and heavy-duty equipment. VISCOPLEX® and VISCOBASE® products from the DRIVON™ technology toolbox are true design elements for achieving fuel economy. Some of the most valuable assets in the toolbox are VISCOPLEX® comb polymers, whose well-defined molecular architecture drives the viscosity/temperature relationship to the extremes of outstanding efficiency and fuel economy performance. Evonik’s lubricant solutions meet stringent performance requirements worldwide and are constantly raising expectations for the next generation of lubricant technology in:
• Engine oils
• Automatic transmission fluids
• Manual transmission fluids
• Rear axle fluids
• Continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluids
• Double-clutch transmission (DCT) fluids
As modern engines and transmissions evolve, efforts to satisfy emissions and fuel economy targets, fluid durability and owner expectations for reliability and drive quality lead to more complex powertrain design. These sophisticated systems require equally sophisticated lubrication, formulated with performance-enhancing additives of the highest caliber.
Evonik’s Oil Additives specialists bring more than 70 years of global experience focused on advancing lubrication for key automotive powertrain components: engine, transmission, and axle/differential. The Oil Additives Team at Evonik partners with lubricant formulators to develop customized automotive fluid formulations using: VISCOPLEX® lubricant Viscosity Index Improvers (VIIs) for Engine Oils,Transmission and Axle Fluids and Hydraulic Fluids; along with VISCOPLEX® Pour Point Depressants (PPDs) and Defoamer Additives; and VISCOBASE® synthetic base fluids.

TRANSMISSION, GEAR AND AXLE FLUIDS
Lubricant marketers are taking advantage of the excellent viscometrics and shear stability DRIVON™ technology provides to transmission, gear and axle fluids.
DRIVON™ technology enables development of very high viscosity index fluids. The additives used ensure a reduction in the viscosity losses at low temperatures without compromising the necessary fluid film strength at peak temperatures, delivering improved fuel efficiency performance.

FUEL EFFICIENCY FROM COMB POLYMERS
Based on Evonik’s polymethacrylate, or PAMA technology, comb polymers offer a unique polymer molecular architecture. The flexibility of the polar “backbone” in the comb polymer is designed to allow large molecules to “collapse” at low temperatures. As temperatures increase, the backbone swells, and the molecule expands. This results in a desired thickening effect, while maintaining a range of other positive attributes gained from the use of the PAMA technology.
