Grade 2

Grade Two is working hard. This coming month our new word families are “-ake” and “-ale”. Our word work will be on long vowel “a” and initial consonants /kw/ (queen) and /y/ (yell). We are busy writing narratives and focusing on ideas and adding details. In Math we are continuing to work on number, such as skip counting forward and backward by 2,5 and 10; odd and even num-bers; repeating patterns; 2-D and 3-D shapes; and beginning to do some graphing. Our mental math strategies are doubles, making ten, and adding and subtracting 1 and 2 from a number. These are a review from Grade One - we need to know them all to help with other mental math strategies. Spelling is sent home at the begin-ning of the week and should be practiced nightly in a variety of ways to ensure they can spell the words; we get new ones on Friday. Please have your child read their book each night so they can become stronger readers. We are working hard to make big jumps in our reading.

Grade 4 Mrs. Hooper has been working on organ-izing our classroom. We have a writing

table and a table for guided math.

Our room looks great!

K. and 1 are working on fluency and main idea. Our new word families are : -op, -ot, -ell. The short vowel “o” and writ-ing stories are areas to work on. In math, we are looking at attributes of 3D solids, looking at equalities and ine-qualities, patterns and number words to 10!

Grade 5

So far this month we have been busy with our new unit about food. Grade 5 students are keeping a food journal and discussing about what they eat for déjeuner, diner and souper. We noticed that gaufres and poutine are some of our favour-ite meals and that we don’t really like fèves verts. Mme Chute

Thank You!! Thank you to those who donated to the Indigo cam-paign “For the Love of Reading.” Your support allows us to add books to our library from Indigo. We have added many books to our library through this pro-gram, on the years we have been chosen to partici-pate. It allows us to add books not available through Scholastic. This especially benefits the older students as there are fewer authors who write for the teen age group available through Scholastic, making the Indi-go program so valuable. Thanks again for your sup-port!

Middle School Math

Dreambox has been launched for the Grade 6 Math class. The students are able to access Dreambox at home 24/7.

The Grade 7/8 Math class are finishing up units on decimals and Pythagorean Theorem.

Middle School Science

Grad 6 Science is beginning to investigate micro-organisms, while the 7/8 class are busy finishing up their research papers on oceanic life and environ-mental issues..

Middle School Health

Students have just completed a unit on nutrition and are now investigating the human body systems.

Grade 6 Social Studies have been learning about culture and the common elements of culture around the world. They are just begin-ning a new project where they will compare their own culture to that of someone in an-

other country.

Grade 7/8 Social Studies have been learning about empowerment and what empowers or

disempowers someone.

Middle School Language Arts

All middle school students have a weekly spelling list they should be studying. These words reflect specific spelling patterns stu-dents in each grade level should be able to spell independently within and without con-text. Also, students are working on writing

personal narratives.

Theme of the month: Respect

High School English In Grades 10 and 11, we have been reading Har-per Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird , which has re-sulted in many great discussions surrounding prejudice, its causes, and effects. Students have related themes in the novel to the plight of the First Nations people and the residential school system, and attitudes towards newcomers to Canada. They will be finishing the novel this week, then we will begin working on a final es-say examining the themes presented in the novel.

In Grade 123, students are working on a Science Fiction unit, looking at the effects of technolo-gy—its benefits and drawbacks. In Grade 122, students are halfway through Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. They are finding the novel challenging, but are coming to understand the characters and their motivations. They will com-plete this novel and will be working on a final essay before report cards are out.

Ms. Lee’s bit: Zoom Zoom Zoom! As we enter November, I cannot believe how fast the semester is going by! Term 1 is coming to an end on Nov 3rd so make sure that all missing assignments and projects are completed and handed in! With Secondary Expo, special programs and the start up of basketball, we will have many things to distract us from classes. Do your best to stay fo-cussed! Make use of your agenda to keep yourself organized! Check Powerschool often and prepare your-self for each class, assignment, quiz and test! Seek extra help / or just a quiet place to work, as needed (or maybe before you need it)! You got this!!

From the World of Mathematics

Math 9-Students are currently working on surface area of composite objects-meaning a cylinder attached to a cube. I prefer to use things like ice shacks and chimneys to make it more realistic. If you have a child in grade 9 ask them to find the surface area of things in your house, like a soup can sit-ting on a cereal box and remind them to remove the area

where the can is sitting on the box.

NRF 10- Students just finished up a test on fractional expo-nents and have moved on to a functions and relations unit. They will be building on writing equations to represent pat-

terns in tables and graphing and analyzing linear relations.

Foundations 11 students are working on quadratics. What goes up must come down! Quadratics is just the path (parabola) that such an object would take Students are find-ing the maximum height a ball could reach, how long it would be in the air and the time it would take to reach a

certain point.

Pre Calc 12-Laws of Exponents and Laws of Logarithms-simply just the inverse of one another. These topics cover material such as the growth rate of bacteria or the rate of depreciation. Bacteria grows rapidly so make sure to get

your flu shot!

Powerschool Update:

Grades 9-12 students and parents should now be able to access your marks through powerschool (https://sisasds.nbed.nb.ca/public/home.html)

Students should use the same username / password as they use for the school computers.

Check on your progress and make adjustments; hand in missing assignments ; change what you are doing in class or see teachers for extra help!

Term 1 is coming to an end on Nov 3rd! This will for your first mark on your report card. Make sure you take care of any missing assignments or assess-ments this week!

Term 2 starts fresh on Nov 6th!

You can do this!! Have a great semester!!

ONLINE COURSES

High School parents!!! If your son or daughter is taking an online course this semester, please ask him or her to log on to nbvhs.nbed.nb.ca so that you can view their grades. Students taking online courses should be working on the course for one hour each day in school, and one hour each day at home.

Greetings Vikings! I would like to congratulate the girls soccer team on a great season. Basketball season is upon us and I can’t wait to see the same Viking spirit that I saw at all of the soccer games. I would love to see everyone out and hit-ting the court. Our regular season tips off in a few weeks. I hope to see you all there! Pat Halford Athletic Director

As my graduation approach-es ever so quickly I sit and reflect on the past thirteen years of my life: all the school work, the basketball practices, and the ever-so- much-dreaded homework. As much as I really didn’t like going to school, it was-n’t all that bad. People can say what they want about the school being awful and how their kids aren’t getting

the education they need, but they are getting a very good education. The teachers are passionate about what they are teaching and reflect that pas-sion into their students.

I went on a trip this past summer and met a friend from Brooklyn, New York. As he was telling me about his school experience I kept thinking to my-self “Wow we are really lucky to have teachers that actually care”. As I started to tell him about how our high school only has only approximately 40 students and our biggest classes rarely have over 15 students in them. His answer was “Man, you guys must really learn a lot being in such a small school. It’s hard for me to even get help from my teachers, they just don’t care like your teach-ers do”. He continued to talk about his school life and the teachers that he has.

As a student that has spent his whole school career

at Campobello Island Consolidated School I can

easily say that I’ve had one of the best educations

that I could possibly get. We might not get a lot of

courses offered here that other schools might get

offered to them but every class that I’ve taken I

have succeeded in greatly, and that’s how it is for

any student that wants to succeed in this school. If

you have the ambition it can be done. So I just

want to say a huge thank you to the teachers that

have got me to this point in

my life, thank you for caring,

thank you for being here

every day.

Grade 12….. It just

doesn’t seem possible.

You think you’re going to

be ready for it, you think

you can’t wait, until you’re

actually a senior. Then it

all hits you at once. It’s a

scary thing honestly; one

minute you’re in grade 6

thinking it’s cool you’re in middle school, and

the next your principal is helping you fill out

your university application. You suddenly real-

ize that all the great teachers that you’ve come to

love and appreciate so much are going to be

gone in 1 years’ time. Rushing to the end isn’t

what you want to do. I did it my entire time here

at C.I.C.S. and now I’m just being smothered

with questions and cover letters and applica-

tions. Being a senior and having to make life

changing decisions is a very stressful thing. My

advice to lower grades is don’t wish it away. Be-

cause now that it is all going away, I’d do any-

thing to be a freshman again. The reason I say

this I because you don’t realize what you have

until it’s gone. I was very lucky to grow up in

such a great community, with great people. No

matter how bad you think it is, it isn’t. Because

nothing is more scary than knowing you’re going

to be living alone in 10 months. I was very fortu-

nate to attend school here with great friends and

teachers, it’s sad to say

that my time here is al-

most gone, but the next

chapter of my life

should be just as inter-

esting.

I Am Poem by Simon

I am creative, funny and smart

I wonder if I can make a roller coaster

I hear talking and pencils sharpening

I see orange and books

I want Lego Dragster set

I am creative, funny, and smart.

I pretend my toy figurines come alive

I feel excited

I touch Play-Doh

I worry about school

I cry sometimes

I am creative, funny, and smart.

I Am Poem by Rianna

I am funny and cool

I wonder who my ancestors are

I hear Ms. Denbow yelling at us

I want a private jet

I am funny and cool.

I pretend that I can do backflips

I feel that poems are actually hard

I touch the desk as I write this

I worry that I will forget my agenda for

class

I cry when it’s Monday

I am funny and cool.

I AM Poem by Declan

I am creative and funny

I wonder what other people’s lives are like

I hear laughter and the comics of yesterday

I see my idols on TV and in the movies I understand I’m not the best

I want to be like them I say I can do better

I am creative and funny. I dream of being successful with my dreams

I try to be funny and to make a difference

I pretend I’m others with my impressions I hope I do.

I feel the stuff I make and build I am creative and funny.

I touch my puppets and my other creations

I worry I won’t be successful in my work

I cry because I fail

I am creative and funny.
