Dear Parents and Students;

This Career and Educational Planning Guide is intended to assist students as they make plans for a career that will lead to a rewarding and enjoyable future. We urge students and parents to work with the school faculty to review the information in this book in preparation for creating the students personal plan of study. Each year you will annually revisit the students personal plan of study. The personal plan of study is the students unique plan of study which outlines courses that align with future education and career goals. When students see the relevancy of high school course work to what they aspire to in their future, they are more apt to take school more seriously and enroll in more rigorous courses. Remember course selection is very important and schedule changes can be very difficult.

Parent, please familiarize yourself with the abundance of information in this book and actively participate with your school and student in creating and reviewing your childs personal plan of study. Students rank parents as the most influential people in their lives. Challenge your students to set high standards, select courses and school activities which directly help them achieve personal and career goals, work hard to achieve these goals and attend classes daily. Embrace the power of your influence and genuinely engage in educational pursuits with your child(ren).

We look forward to partnering with you for a successful year. Please dont hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Mission Statement

To Prepare All Students for Productive Living

Philosophy

The purpose of the Clinton School District is to prepare our students to be productive members of an ever-changing society. It is our ultimate goal that each student grow intellectually, physically and emotionally. Furthermore, we strive to preserve each individuals rights and opportunities.

We draw our strength from supportive parents and patrons, dedicated students, and imaginative, professional teachers. Supported by these elements, we will continue to be a progressive leader in innovative curricular, professional, and technological advancement. With these components present and functioning cooperatively, children will develop into productive citizens who are able to contribute to the society in which they live.

Beliefs

All students can learn.

Students need to be willing learners.

To respect the opinions and beliefs of all students.

To provide equal opportunities in learning through special programs for the gifted as well as the handicapped.

To encourage students to make worthwhile use of leisure time.

To improve the learning situation through continuous evaluation and research.

To provide counseling that will direct the student to his areas of interest and importance.

To make provision for a program of health and safety education.

To help each child recognize his individual worth and make him aware of his importance in our society.

To develop students knowledge of the concepts of democracy and promote the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society.

To provide opportunities for vocational education.

To promote growth and practice of high moral and professional standards by the faculty.

To allow opportunities for parents to have a voice in the policies of the schools.

To give consideration for the most efficient use of tax money.

Clinton School District seeks to initiate a cooperative effort among students, faculty and administrators to prepare the student for his present and future responsibilities as a citizen of his community and country, and as an individual.

Notice of Nondiscrimination

It is the policy of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, or disability in its programs or employment practices as required by Title VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the enrollment process?

The enrollment process begins in late January as the high school counselors schedule a group meeting with each class to discuss the Career and Educational Planning Guide. In addition, the counselors meet individually with the students for discussion of career pathways and class selection. Students will be provided time to work on the computer to complete their course selections on-line. Once course selection has been completed a final master schedule will be generated.

Students will receive their final schedules at the end of the school year. At this time students may request additional schedule changes. Under certain conditions these requests will require parental permission before receiving consideration. Once the school year has begun, students have up to three days for a schedule change. Beyond the third day, schedule changes are made only for exceptional circumstances and with administrative approval.

What happens if I fail a semester of a required full year (2 semesters) course?

If a student fails a semester or more of a requirement, they will have to retake that course credit in one of the following ways, summer school, afterschool credit recovery, or re-enrolling in the course.

May I get extra credit through summer school or correspondent courses?

Clinton High School accepts up to 2 units of credit each year from students who take transcripted course through correspondent, college or other means.

What happens if I withdraw from a class before the end of the semester?

Students who withdraw from a class after the deadline will receive an F in that course and will not have the opportunity to gain credit in another course.

May I change my schedule at semester if I dont like a class I am taking?

Students may change their schedule at semester for various reasons if there is another course choice available.

Do any classes which I took in junior high count toward high school credit?

No. Algebra taken during the 8th grade only counts at the college level.

The Eligibility Center maintains and processes all of the initial-eligibility certifications. More information can be found at: www.ncca.org

The high school administration realizes that an effective educational program is one that provides

opportunities for student learning both within the classroom and beyond the traditional classroom and

school day. These expanded opportunities are viewed as educational options to supplement the

regular program.

A+ Schools Program

The Clinton Schools Program strives to ensure that students are prepared for and successful in life beyond high school. The A+ Schools Program provides students with continuous, progressive career information throughout the students years in the Clinton School District. The program focuses on ensuring students have course offerings that are rigorous and relevant to the world outside the classroom that will better prepare them for their paths after high school. For Additional Information about the A+ Schools Program contact the A+ coordinator or the Department of Higher Education website (www.dhe.mo.gov).

Articulated Credit

Articulation agreements are set up for certain career, technical or occupational courses that are offered through a postsecondary institution such as State Fair Community College. Articulated credit is earned by successfully completing a career, technical, or occupational course with an 80% or higher. The college credit will appear on a college transcript once a student graduates high school and earns 15 hours of college credit through the post-secondary institution. There is no cost to the student for articulated credit.

Dual Credit

Dual credit is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors who are capable of meeting an increased challenge to earn high school credit and/or college credit through selected courses offered on the high school campus. Dual credit courses are taught in the high school by a certified high school teacher with a Masters degree in the field of study or who has been screened and approved by the college offering the dual credit. Early Graduation

A student who wishes to graduate from high school in less than the ordinary eight (8) semesters, grade 9-12 sequence, may request permission to complete graduation requirements on an alternate schedule. The student and parents/guardians will consult with high school guidance personnel to develop a graduation plan. The students intention to accomplish early graduation shall be presented in writing to the principal by October 1st.

Early graduation requests may be approved only if the student plans to continue his/her post graduate studies during the eighth semester, or has a specific hardship. The student must have been in attendance at Clinton High School for a minimum of two (2) full semesters and have earned a minimum of six (6) units of credit at Clinton High School to be eligible.

A student who graduates early must complete all graduation requirements established by the Clinton Board of Education. The student who chooses early graduation will be allowed to participate in the spring graduation ceremonies. In all other activities, the early-out graduate will be treated as a graduate student. Diplomas for early graduates will be awarded at the time of graduation. If an early graduate chooses not to attend graduation ceremonies, their diploma will be mailed after the ceremony

Other Credit Opportunities

Clinton High School allows students the opportunity to earn credit through other non-traditional venues such as correspondence courses, the Missouri Virtual Instruction Program (MOVIP), and Summer School. A student may earn a maximum of 2 high school credits in an academic year. Students should talk to their guidance counselor for more information on various correspondence programs and summer school options.

Career Planning at Clinton High School

What do you want to do after high school? That is a question that is asked of our students a multitude of times over the course of their public school education. Its a question that is not easily answered, due to the enormous number of possible post-secondary alternatives that are currently available to our students. Technological advances and global competition have transformed the nature of both education and work. Tomorrows jobs will require more knowledge and training, highly developed 21st Century Skills, technological skills, and more flexible workers than ever before. Our students need to be prepared for, and informed of, the reality of several job and career changes over the course of their lifetimes. They need to understand that they will have to continually update their knowledge and skills, which may require additional training and/or education.

The Clinton School District offers a wide array of courses and experiences to its students. As students review course offerings and activities, we hope to guide them in choosing coursework and experiences that are relevant to their future goals.

In planning for post-secondary goals, students should start with examining where their own interests and talents lie. This can be accomplished in many different ways within the school district; researching middle and high school classes of interest, taking interest and skill inventories, participating in career fairs offered, and taking advantage of the many extra-curricular and enrichment activities available. The school district uses the Missouri Connections online program (www.missouriconnections.org) along with the PLAN test for interest assessments and to explore the variety of options students have beyond high school.

Using the results of career assessments students create their personal plan of study for their high school years and beyond. School counselors, teachers and other district personnel, are available to guide students and parents in this important planning process. The planning process is critical to not only meeting graduation requirements, but also to taking the coursework that will ultimately lead to a successful post-secondary transition whether it is transitioning to work, college, technical training, or military.

Career Paths and Career Clusters

Career paths are clusters of occupations/careers grouped according to participants interests and talents or skills. All paths include a variety of occupations that require different levels of education and training. Thus, career paths provide a plan for all students, whatever their interests, abilities, talents, or desired levels of education. Selecting a career path provides a student with an area of FOCUS, along with FLEXIBILITY and a VARIETY of ideas to pursue. Deciding on a career path can assist you in exploring your interests and preparing for your future. Identifying a career path can help you in selecting school courses, activities, and part-time employment. It can also help guide your participation in job shadowing, career exploration and internships. The focus of career paths is on helping students choose a career path, not a specific occupation. Selecting a career path is not a lifelong commitment; it is a place to begin focusing ones energies. As students take different courses and learn more about themselves and careers, they will probably change career paths. If different career paths become more interesting, the students can reevaluate plans, make appropriate decisions, and revise their high school plans as necessary.

Choosing A Career Path or Cluster

1. Identify your interests, abilities, and talents.

2. Identify the career path or cluster that relates to your interests, abilities, and talents.

3. Explore occupations in those career paths or clusters.

4. Decide how much education you want to receive after high school.

5. Develop a personal plan of study by selecting courses and co-curricular activities that relate to your career educational and career goal.

6. If undecided regarding a career path or cluster, choose courses from different career areas to give you a better idea of your interests.ATHS

Programs of Study (POS)

Programs of study, serve as a guide, along with other career planning materials, to help students develop their personal plans of study. Courses listed within these programs of study are recommended coursework only and should be individualized to meet each learners educational and career goals. Clinton High Schools programs of study can be found on the following pages.

Personal Plan of Study (PPOS)

A students scope and sequence of coursework and related activities based upon their chosen Career Path or Career Cluster and their educational goals. Initiated in the eighth grade, it is designed to insure a successful post-secondary transition. Personal plans of study is the key component of the Individual Planning process. A sample of Clinton High Schools Personal Plan of Study is found on page 49.
