Young Sports Ambassadors Katie McLaren and Cara MacKenzie (both of 4 th year) attended the Grampian and Highland Regional Young Sports Ambassadors conference at Pittodrie stadium on Friday 13 th

September. The ambassadors’ aims are to: Raise awareness of opportunities to participate in sport in

schools, clubs and community sports hubs Promote an active lifestyle Raise awareness and using the excitement of all major

sporting events The young ambassadors were lucky enough to hear David Smith, Paralympics Rowing Gold medallist, and Eilish McColgan, Scottish 3000m steeplechase champion, who spoke at the opening ceremonies. They then attended workshops held by sporting champions and experienced ambassadors to develop the skills they will need to carry out their ambassador role. Both girls enjoyed the event and came away with plenty of ideas to share with the rest of Kemnay Academy Young Sports Ambassadors.

Geography Matters with Mr RobinsonThe builders working on our school’s extension have coined, at least to my ears, a

new phrase for the main building – ‘the hex block’. Not sure I like it. I’m glad it survived the bulldozer because I think it is a special building. Our school was built in the early 80s, but oddly shaped buildings weren’t a particular fashion of that time. Of course we aren’t alone with a hexagon in Aberdeenshire as Mintlaw Academy has an identical one. When trying to maximise space inside a given perimeter, a circle is the best shape but not easy to live or work in. The hexagon is the best compromise. Educated bees know it and in Geography some of us were tortured with it in a thing called Central Place Theory. To be sure, a lot of hexagonal buildings have traditionally been forts or prisons. At a social level, the hex brings us together and encourages us all to say ‘hello’ as we mill and spiral around (and around and around in some cases). Not for us those long, uniform corridors. The hexagon is the ‘signature’ of Kemnay Academy and the heart of the school. So many memories are tied up in there and it would have been a shame to flatten them as so often happens. It’s pretty shabby inside and out just now, but I’m sure the refurbishment will help to make it ‘hexy’ again.

After school on Tuesday 17 October some members of the Writers’ Group headed up to the Point of Origin to seek inspiration. The group met after school before heading up to the viewpoint to find things that might inspire each individual. Miss Hall and Mrs Black accompanied the small group up to the site where it was quite windy. However a great time was had by all and some good pieces of writing produced.

NATIONAL POETRY DAY IN SCOTLANDThursday 3rd October 2013

Over the course of the weekend, the builders have been in removing the ceiling boards around the corridors of the middle and upper floor. Eventually there will be new lighting and ceiling. This is all part of the phase which will eventually revamp the whole of the main building (hexagon block).

Building Works UpdateBy Lee Aitken

Over the course of the last three months, there have been major changes to Kemnay Academy. The entrance was demolished and a new music department was created at the back of the maths huts. However, everything is on schedule and now the builders are concentrating on the main extension. A steel structure for the new gym is due onsite on the 30 September and the structure for the new teaching block arriving on the 14 October. Hopefully, both frames will be up and complete by early November and pupils will be able to see the shape of the new school. Then in April of next year, refurbishment work will begin on existing classrooms in the main building, including two new science labs in 209 and 210.Ron Wells who has worked with Morrison Construction for nearly seven years is site manager. He told me the kind of things Morrison’s due which include, office blocks, working with the NHS, oil companies and school projects but are mainly based in Perth.Ron also said that Morrison Construction take on pupils for work experience and apprentices and has already taken on three new apprentices this year.

Before the building work began, a school garden was built behind the maths huts. It was created in 2009 by Mr Bayliss and Mr Clail to show pupils where their food came from. The garden was organic and used no chemicals to grow things like potatoes, strawberries and cabbages. However, builders came to dig up the old garden to find a sewer, which would help with the new extension. Instead of just digging the ground over, Morrison Construction gifted the garden with three large raised beds, which now makes the garden wheel chair friendly. The garden has also helped the community get involved. Greener Kemnay and the local brownies have all helped with the garden in the past. Now though, the Prefects are getting involved by collecting food waste from the canteen to help make ‘homemade compost’ with the help of an accelerated composter. Next spring, the garden will hopefully be up and running again. Hopefully with the next few years, the garden will be providing H.E with resources. Mr Clail commented on the new garden by saying, “We are really excited about the new garden and what opportunities it will bring. It is now accessible to people with disabilities and we are looking forward to work next spring.”
