Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently then you will know that Leeds has seriously upped its burger game. Almost Famous, MeatLiquor, Boss Burger and Aire Bar to name a few. With all this competition it can be hard to stand out from the crowd but I am confi dent Brooklyn Bar won’t be struggling.  There is a huge selection of burgers, burritos and sides on the menu but I think they have nailed it with their Pulled Pork and Bourbon Burger; an impressive combination of juicy beef, delicious smokey BBQ pulled pork and pickles in a toasted brioche bun.  To accompany the burger, their cracked black pepper chips with baconnaise will certainly put a smile on your face. I have tried my fair share of baconnaise on fries in the past but this is something

else altogether. The bacon is deep fried before being blended with mayonnaise and then a couple of crispy slices are added on top. This might have to be one of your ‘cheat meals’ of the week!

A lot has been said about Brooklyn Bar and there’s good reason for that. Part of the incredible Jones Bar Group, who boast Roxy Lanes and Roxy Ballroom on their portfolio, Brooklyn Bar really does rise up to the local competition.

Being situated at the bottom of the thriving Call Lane means it is ideal place to go with friends on a Saturday night. Another massive selling point of this restaurant is the incredible selection of drinks that they have to o er.

The deals on drinks will make you feel like a student again, the cocktail menu o ers 2

for £10 all night and then the happy hour is 4pm until 8pm which includes cocktails, bottled beers, vodka mixers and wine for £3 each! Brooklyn Bar also attracts those working in the city for after-work drinks!

Next time you see me in there, I’ll be having a Porch Swing - an amazing mix of all my favourite things; Hendricks, Pimms, lemonade and cucumber. The cocktail

menu has all of the classic favourites but with a bit of a twist, so you will certainly fi nd something to your taste.

In a nutshell, it’s great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere at Brooklyn Bar. It’s defi nitely worth paying them a visit.

Here at City Dweller we love trying out new menus around Leeds, and luckily for us one of our favourite places to eat and drink, Malmaison, has just launched a mouth-watering American BBQ bargain that’s too good to miss.

With a long overdue catch up on the cards with my good friend Suzie, we had the perfect excuse to try out Malmaison‘s latest o ering, and of course sink a cocktail or two!

The Malbar, that occupies the basement of the hotel, is quite the Friday night haunt for my friends and I which I’d put down to a number of reasons; the setting is luxurious yet relaxed, the service is exceptional, and the ‘Thank Mal it’s Friday’ drinks deal of incredible cocktails for a fi ver keeps us more than happy. We took full advantage of the bar post meal but on this occasion our night began in the sophisticated, low lit, Brasserie restaurant where we couldn’t wait for our American BBQ Ribs.

To start we ordered from the Brasserie menu, and as I have a bit of a Mussels addiction I just had to order a portion of Moules cooked in Meantime Beer with pancetta, whilst Suzie went for the stunningly presented Ahi Tuna Tartare with chopped avocado, pickled ginger, black sesame, soy

dressing and wasabi. Having dined from the Brasserie menu in the past it was hard to resist our starters, however had we of seen the proportion of the Ribs special beforehand we most likely would have saved them for another time!

Onto the main event, and the true reason for our visit, the American BBQ Rib Tips. Usually when there’s a meal deal going some places tend to cut corners on portion size and quality, not in Malmaison’s case, we were each presented with a generous stack of ribs, roasted sweet potatoes, slaw, and to wash it all down a crisp bottle of Sol, all for just £15 per person. Not to harp on too much about price but for the standard, and the amount of food we had, we would have been happy to pay more.

The ribs were defi nitely the show stoppers of our meal, having been slowly cooked in Mal’s homemade smoke rub marinade the meat literally slid o the bone, and the sweet and tangy BBQ sauce added just the right amount of kick. Served in separate cast iron ramekins the crispy roasted sweet potatoes drizzled in paprika mayo, and the fl avoursome chipotle and garlic slaw, were the perfect accompaniments.

If you’re wondering what Malmaison’s take on the recent BBQ food trend stand out from the other restaurants around town well where do I start?! As already mentioned the price is near on unbeatable, not only that but you can enjoy your meal in a fi ne dining setting with outstanding service, it is the best of both worlds…tasty and hearty comfort food in a classy and intimate environment. And fi nally, as already mentioned those ribs, the taste, the quality, the texture, it would be quite the challenge to fi nd a superior competitor!

As if we hadn’t eaten enough already our server for the evening Alex tempted us into ordering a special Bourbon Sundae to share for dessert. In true American style the sundae was packed with naughtiness, a gooey chocolate brownie, topped with peanut butter ice-cream, bourbon infused malt cream, bourbon caramel sauce, fi nished o with a sprinkling of grated Snickers bar, pure genius. I’m not normally a dessert person but on this occasion there was no stopping me.

Feeling su ciently full, and

more than satisfi ed with our meal, Suzie and I retired to the Malbar where, thanks to the money we saved on our food, we splashed out on a couple of decedent, champagne fi lled, ‘Bad Boy Good Girl’ cocktails, a fabulous end to a fi rst-rate night.

Our experience at Malmaison was second to none, the service, the setting, and of course the bank friendly American BBQ Rib Tips, it really is the ideal venue for any occasion.

So tuck in and enjoy!

City Dweller and socialite, Rachel Flynn heads to Malmaison to try out their mouth-watering American BBQ ribs.

LEEDS MARKET

Leeds Kirkgate Market, the iconic indoor market in the centre of Leeds, is thriving!

Leeds is famous for it’s retail, with hotspots such as the Victoria Quarter, Trinity Leeds, White Rose and the Leeds Kirkgate Market, we’re blessed!

As the largest indoor market in Europe, the market is heaven for shoppers; with fresh food, drink, fashion, fl owers, hardware and everything else in-between available at a ordable prices, what more could you ask for?

The market has been situated in the heart of Leeds since 1857. Coupling this old fashioned appeal with the fact that Leeds Kirkgate Market

also hosts some of the most exciting traders in the country, it’s not hard to see why it’s so popular.

The market itself, both inside and outside, includes a huge range of traders, with businesses spanning generations and representing a wide range of nationalities including a Polish delicatessen and a Chinese supermarket, an Asian Bazaar every Wednesday morning and regular farmer’s markets. Let’s not forget the famous Marks & Spencer stall either!

But it’s not just food, the market includes fashion & beauty stalls, toy stalls, a barbers and so much more. Their clothes stalls boast a range of colorful,

unique clothes whereas the beauty stalls provide a huge collection of branded perfume, cosmetics and toiletries at prices you’ll love! Combining this with toys and children’s DVDs, there’s fun for all of the family.

Their shop and drop scheme also makes their fresh food even more accessible than ever before! You can fi nish your shopping and then store your fresh items with the markets until you’re ready to go home. The fresh food includes locally produced eggs, top meats from the butchers and a huge selection of fruit and vegetables from the greengrocers. So whatever your taste, there’s something for everyone.

Whether you’re after your weekly shop, a bite to eat or even a new haircut, Leeds Kirkgate Market really is the place to be in Leeds City Centre.

Since Bar Soba’s arrival on the Leeds restaurant scene earlier this year, it has changed the game in Pan Asian Cuisine. With an up-to-date quirky and classy take on Pan Asian Street Food and a fantastic cocktail menu to boot, it really is giving the other eateries in Leeds a real run for their money.

Bar Soba is situated on Merrion Street which, as of this year, has become quite the hotspot! After recently becoming a pedestrian friendly street, Merrion Street is buzzing. With a mix of top bars and restaurants near the theatres of Leeds, it’s the perfect place to visit before a show or even just for a night out in the city!

Walking down to Bar Soba with the sun shining down on us, it’s easy to see why this street is thriving and with additions like Bar Soba, it doesn’t look like changing any time soon.

Launched in 1999 with bars in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Bar Soba quickly became a hit across Scotland as it established itself as the go-to place for Pan Asian food. Recently, they launched their bar in Leeds, their fi rst venture into England,

We had not had the pleasure of tasting their food before and I couldn’t wait to check it out. My partner Lauren and I went on a Sunday and after a busy week, a good Sunday feast is exactly what we needed!

Upon entering, we were greeted warmly by a member of sta and promptly seated. All the sta were extremely knowledgeable and helpful when explaining the menu to us.

Our table was directly under a paned glass annex supported by white painted beams which really set the scene as the sunlight shone through the restaurant.

To get a variety of tastes we opted to start with the Soba Sharing platter which consisted of corn fritters and Thai fi sh cakes plus more great tasting fi nger food which all came perfectly presented with a assortment of fantastic tasting sauces and dips. The starter portion sizes were great and at £6.95 per head, we couldn’t have asked for more!

For mains, we chose to share Teriyaki Beef Noodles and a Chang Mai Seafood Noodle Broth, which I would highly recommend for you seafood lovers. While it wasn’t a typical Sunday dinner, it didn’t disappoint; a gorgeous mix of fresh squid and prawns which was full of fl avour!

Whatever you fancy, Bar Soba has got all bases covered with a menu to set your taste buds tingling and open your eyes to new Thai dishes done the Bar Soba way. Other options included a Thai take on a 6oz beef burger called the Dirty Bangkok Burger or the old favourite, The Thai Green Curry.

As well as o ering a full gourmet menu, Bar Soba also o er an Express Lunch Menu with £8.95 for 2 courses which are smaller plates aimed at speed and convenience for those of you looking for a lunchtime snack.

If you are more of a weekend City Dweller then they host a disco, house and funk DJ every Saturday whilst o ering

a Happy Hour with 2 for 1 cocktails on Fridays from 5pm to 7pm and Saturdays from 10pm until midnight. We decided to fi nish the evening o with a couple of lovely cocktails from their extensive menu.

As any food enthusiast can imagine, our belly’s were full on fi nishing our visit to Bar Soba and as we said our goodbyes, I can truly say it’s the best Pan-Asian experience I have ever had.

At Bar Soba they have it all; you can enjoy a chilled out meal, a family get together or just a cocktail or seven with friends. All bases are covered to ensure you will have a great visit.

I will be back for a winter warming Thai Curry very very soon!

Call your mum and tell her she’s sacked…Distrikt launch awesome new Sunday dinner.

Since opening its doors back in 2009, Distrikt have been providing Leeds based hedonists with blistering beats and booze, as well as a diverse and ever-changing tapas menu. I dropped in recently for a sneaky peek of their shiny new Sunday dinner menu to see if it could compete with local other local trade.

Sunday is the day of rest for a very good reason. After a week of work followed by two days of socialising, who doesn’t need a day on the couch watching movies? I

went a long with a rather nasty hangover in desperate need of a cure and we all know there’s only one thing that can do that – yes, more beer.

We supped a bottle of the rather fi ne Vedett white beer as we glanced over the menu. The starters included Bahara spiced chicken wings and sticky balsamic pork ribs, but as delicious as they sounded, we just wanted to get straight down to business with the Sunday dinner (and leave some room for a few beers after of course).

The mains menu covers chicken, belly pork and beef, as well as two vegetarian options. We

both went traditional with the chicken, and what a fantastic choice it was. Cooked to perfection in lemon and thyme, it came beautifully presented and accompanied with Mediterranean and root vegetables and roast potatoes.

The dish as a whole had a really rustic feel to it, and was of course complimented by lashings of homemade gravy. It was defi nitely a threat to the average mum’s o ering, although there was no risk of that where my old dear is concerned – she once made me mashed potato which had the consistency of soup (sorry mum if you happen to be reading this).

After enjoying a glass of Malbec with the meal, we rounded the afternoon o with another Vedett, before retiring home for an afternoon of X-Factor and similar trash (don’t judge me).

So Distrikt have upped the ante with their inspired new menu and produced dishes worthy of your precious Sunday afternoon.

Call your mum and cancel - City Dweller highly recommend you pay a visit here soon.

Fletch checks in at Distrikt to check out their brand new Sunday Lunch menu.

Talk about ending the summer season with a bang. September was such a corking month for Pink Gorilla and Hairy Lemon, it’s been and gone in the blink of an eye.

We’ve launched Leeds hottest new restaurant, got our rave-on in the VIP area and rubbed shoulders with world-class DJ’s and organised the best 13th birthday party Leeds has even seen. Here’s a full round up of our most recent and forthcoming events!

Mint Festival was…well, mint! After weeks of torrential rain, the sun fi nally got his hat out and dancing shoes on and shone down on the beautiful crowds in attendance at this year’s Mint Festival. We had the pleasure of hosting the VIP lounge and despite being rushed o our feet, still managed to throw a few shapes in the Hard Times tent, where the legendary Todd Terry nearly tore the roof o with a red hot set. An amazing time was had by all, and we hope to be back next year.

Roxy Lanes are doing it for the kidsWhereas many city centre bars go by the mantra that children shouldn’t be seen or heard, Roxy Lanes are going against the grain with Roxy Juniors. Between Sunday-Friday 3-6pm and Saturday 10am-3pm you can bring your little monsters along for a spot of bowling at some pocket-money friendly prices.

It’s £5 per game, but they also o er parties for six or more at £10 per kid, which includes a pizza bu et and soft drink on top of their bowling. Get in touch with us if you have any enquiries at [email protected]

Jamiefest at The FavershamCan you remember your 13th birthday party? No, we can’t recall ours either. One girl that won’t forget hers in a hurry was

Jamie, who celebrated in style by throwing her own festival at The Faversham. With DJ’s, beatboxers, body painters, photo booth and even a rodeo bull, 100 raving 13 year olds descended upon the venue to show the oldies how it’s done!

Christmas in Wonderland with Leeds United What happens when you combine Leeds United, Alice in Wonderland and Christmas? Yorkshire’s fi nest festive bash, that’s what. Come down to the Centenary Pavilion venue this December and experience a party that’s madder than the Mad Hatter himself. The entire venue will be transformed into a place of wonder and enchantment, as you enjoy pre-dinner drinks followed by a delicious Christmas dinner with a unique twist.

As you dine atop toadstools, in and amongst oversized teapots and playing cards, Alice and her barmy army of friends and foe will put on an unforgettable, interactive show like nothing you’ve seen before. The night will be capped o more live performance and a DJ spinning your favourite party anthems. Needless to say, we’re more than slightly excited about this one – are you ready to celebrate Christmas in Wonderland?

That’s it for this month people – watch this space for more exciting events and parties heading to Leeds very soon!

Meat lovers of Leeds assemble. Things are about to get a whole lot juicier as Stockdales of Yorkshire opens on South Parade to showcase a superior steak-centric menu that’s guaranteed to redefi ne quality as you know it.

Seating 100 discerning diners as well as a sociable bar area, Stockdales of Yorkshire is set to be at the forefront of the South Parade/Greek Street revival.

There will be a private dining area seating up to 10 guests and a Chefs table - perfect for corporate events or special occasions. As the name would suggest, the decor will be traditional and quintessentially British - with a modern twist.

The menu, which has been created in partnership with Anthony Flinn and Jonathan Elvin, will centre around prime cuts of beef aged for 28 days and seared over

coal in the Jospur oven, giving the meat a unique and unforgettable fl avour. The crowning jewel of our steak menu is without doubt our prime cuts of Wagyu beef. Originating from Japan, Wagyu beef is widely-regarded as the fi nest meat in the world, due to the intense marbling that helps give the meat its rich fl avour and melt-in-the-mouth texture that other cuts simply cannot compete with. In a nut shell, our Wagyu beef is in a league of its own. Diners can preview this alongside all other cuts displayed in our chilled meat cabinet on the ground fl oor. Whilst premium beef is at the very heart of what we do, our menu is well balanced with a diverse range of lighter options on o er such as gin cured salmon, duck egg and tru e soldiers and a chargrilled Caesar salad.

Our Yorkshire born head chef, Jonathan Elvin, has trained with the likes of Gordon Ramsey at Claridges and Mark Fosh in Palma de Mallorca, making him the ideal candidate to blend the best of international cuisine with a distinctly local fl air.

The di erence between Stockdales of Yorkshire and other steak restaurants in Leeds such as Gauchos and Blackhouse Grill will be the quality of the meat on o er at a price that will ensure you leave with a smile.

Before the o cial opening, manager Rodney Prosper commented, “We are very excited to be opening Stockdales of Yorkshire in Leeds next week. We’re

proud to bring you a menu that is traditionally British with a twist and are certain the people of Leeds will love the friendly, dining experience we will be o ering at Stockdales of Yorkshire.”

Summer 2015 may be drawing to a close, but things are about to get hotter than the sun in Leeds this autumn as Revolución de Cuba bursts onto the scene with its unique brand of Cuban cool. Taking up residence in the space previously occupied by Baracoa Luxe Bar, the huge £1.5m Latin American rum bar and club will sit at the end of the ever-popular Call Lane.

Revolución de Cuba promises to mix the old school glamour vibe of the Buena Vista Social Club days of the 1930’s with a contemporary twist, making it the perfect place for the hedonistic people of Leeds and beyond to unwind. The relaxed daytime food and drink experience will turn into

a Caribbean fi esta as the sun goes down to unleash live music, dancing and celebration. Creating 80 new jobs, the dynamic split-level venue will feature a stunning main showpiece bar, live music stage, two upstairs bars and a 700 capacity club and function room, making it ideal for those decadent all-nighters. Leeds General Manager, Chris Sleaford said to us, “We have a fantastic menu with Latin inspired food and rum based cocktails, and with live music the atmosphere will be something totally di erent. There really isn’t anything like it in Leeds already, and it will be a welcome addition to the city.”

Revellers can expect to enjoy the fi nest cocktails outside

of Havana, expertly shaken up by a well-trained team of cantineros, as well as a mouth-watering menu of Cuban inspired cuisine and bar snacks. The head chefs have been on a mission in Cuba’s backstreets to take inspiration from some of Latin America’s most unique restaurants and eateries, enabling them to concoct an array of fl avours that even the most refi ned of pallets will have never experienced. Highlights from the diverse new menu includes a lime and soy marinated chicken chimichanga, Cuban style paella and baked sea bass served in a banana leaf with a Cuban salad. They say the devil is in the detail and that couldn’t be any

truer when it comes to the amazing tapas and side dishes on o er; even the guacamole is made fresh in-house, using a secret blend of ingredients. Much attention to detail has also been paid to the music policy, with a number of musicians on rotation to get those Cuban heels tapping with some blistering live beats that wouldn’t be out of place in the most opulent of Miami clubs.

Buying “O Plan” – What is it all about?

I have written many pieces for City Dweller over the years, from my days as a letting agent, through to today, operating as a specialist in the residential sales sector, with a focus on Buy-to-let property investment. Over the years, I have commented how Leeds City Centre has been begging for more quality residential development and putting the case forward for strong demand from both owner occupiers and tenants.

As the market has improved and values have generally worked their way back towards the sort of levels being achieved before the crash, property values in the City Centre are slowly creeping towards a level where developers can more confi dently justify acquiring land and buildings to develop in to apartments and sell here in Leeds. Two years ago, there would have been few developers confi dent enough to bring forward a scheme, for fear of either not being able to sell the apartments or more accurately, sell at a price where developing is actually profi table, after all, property developers are not charities!

In today’s market, the higher end, smaller schemes which have been developed over the past two years have been selling well with strong demand and at UK City Residential, we have been appointed on several schemes ranging from boutique smaller blocks such as North Street Lofts or the redevelopment of North Crescent to larger schemes like Victoria House and X1 Aire. There are other new developments also being marketed at present, such as Tate House, which JLL have recently launched. We are enjoying a lot of success selling apartments in the Chandlers, which has been popular as buyers view existing properties and then choose the spec that they would like, before the developers refurbish to include new bathrooms, kitchen, fl ooring and decorating. Our buyers have been mainly buy to let investors here, but I think more fi rst time buyers should look at the chandlers as they are ideal fi rst time purchases to get a foot on the ladder at prices mainly less than £100,000. This is a perfect opportunity to buy existing property, with the choice that o plan o ers.

The common denominator in the developments I mention above, as it was before the property crash of 2008, is that they are again being marketed “o plan”. In most cases, this method of marketing, means purchasers look at the location and then if they wish, reserve properties using plans, based on type, size, outlook, fl oor etc. This may initially feel risky as you don’t get to see the fi nished product before

reserving (usually with a cash deposit) or even exchanging contracts. However, there are many benefi ts to buying o plan, especially when the market for existing units is becoming more competitive. For starters, once development is complete, you are buying a brand new property with a warranty. O Plan also means purchasers, if the location matches their requirements, get to pick from a number of plots, o ering a variety of vistas and in some cases, gives buyers a choice of colour scheme/specifi cation options.

As you may already know, our core focus is selling buy to let investment property, but whether you are considering buying o plan for your own occupation or as a buy-to-let, I would strongly advise that you get advice from trusted property professionals and solicitors. Look for developments where the developer is already on site working, this is always a good sign that the developer is credible and can deliver the development without securing the fi nancial comfort of having buyers in place. Some sites currently being marketed do not actually have any contractors working on site, never mind a show fl at to demonstrate the quality that will be developed and this concerns me.

Do your own research in to the developer and get comfortable that they have a track record of delivering good quality property. Look carefully over any paperwork, especially the specifi cation and make sure the developer is o ering a builders warranty or guarantee. If you are an investor, speak to letting agents, get their opinion of demand and rent levels, don’t just take the developers word

as gospel. Most importantly, if the developer is o ering any guaranteed net income for a period after completion, make sure that once this period ends, you won’t be left with a property that cannot let at a level anywhere close to that which the developers rent guarantee states. A buy-to-let investment with a guaranteed level of rent might sound like a safe bet, but once this guarantee ends if your income doesn’t match existing investment opportunities available today, with a track record of letting and occupancy, or is an area that is di cult to let generally, then be aware that your net income will signifi cantly reduce.

MARTIN & CO ARE SPREADING THEIR WINGSWe at Martin & Co Leeds city are spreading our wings out of the city centre towards Oakwood, Roundhay and Chapel Allerton.

This has been brought about by increased demand from landlords and tenants alike wanting to be part of the success story which is Martin & Co Leeds City.

To set the story it began in an overcrowded o ce at 13 Bridge End where we, realising that in order for us to keep up with demand, had to move o ces. So in 2013 we moved from 89m2 space to state of the art o ces at 24-32 Bridge End with

432m2 of space. However, the key to success is not only the environment in which you work but the people you work with! We’ve added great people to key areas and developed a successful sales department whilst placing unlimited importance on retaining our friendly and knowledgeable service.

With developments already proving extremely popular in the Oakwood/Roundhay area on Wetherby Road and Park Avenue, we are now branching out to add more rentals and sales to our portfolio within these vibrant suburbs of Leeds.

Director and Head of Sales, Kate Richardson

commented “The need for homes in these areas are seeing record breaking demand, properties are being rented and sold via our extensive applicant list even before they are advertised.”

If you are thinking of putting your property on the market for either sale or rent, we are the property people, the people in the know, who will achieve the result you want and deserve.

THE ‘CAPITAL OF THE NORTH’ BECOMES A MAGNET FOR INVESTORS

As Leeds continues to build on its ever-growing reputation as the ‘capital of the north’, exciting investment opportunities are arising left, right and centre.

Rents in Leeds city centre grew by 7.7 per cent in 2014 and are expected to surge by a further fi ve per cent in 2015, re-igniting the residential development market.

Amongst them is new o -plan development, Victoria House, located in the northern quarter of the city centre. With a guaranteed net yield of eight per cent for three years, properties like this do not come on the market very often, especially with the small reservation fee of £5,000.

Within walking distance of the city centre, and in close proximity of the new Victoria Gate Shopping Centre and local universities, these apartments are ideal for

investors and owner occupiers alike.

Hi-tech one and two bedroom apartments are still available alongside contemporary studios, with communal gardens, a concierge service and ensuite bathrooms all included in investments.

Victoria House is proving very popular amongst investors as result of its return on investment potential and availability at twenty per cent less than market comparables.

The X1 Aire apartments on East Street are also receiving high levels of interest from investors across the country and beyond, looking to capitalise on the vastly undersupplied rental market in the city centre. It’s predicted that in the next 5 years, Leeds will need an additional 20,000 new households.

Taking boutique living to the next level in Leeds, X1 Aire apartments have impressive, onsite amenities including a private gym and management o ce to compliment the chic city accommodation.

We have a wide range of apartments available for every budget, from bespoke one-bed apartments to luxury penthouses, which again o er a net yield of six per cent in year one.

City Homes

It’s now 18 years since Morgans was founded and we began selling and letting Leeds City Centre’s fi rst apartments- it’s amazing how much a city centre can change in such a relatively short space of time.

A new report from the respected Centre for Cities think tank reveals how the population in the heart of the city more than doubled between 2001 and 2011, from 12,265 to 26,020. In addition, the number of people aged between 20 and 29 who live in the city centre nearly trebled during the same period from 4,756 to 13,187. According to the report, this age group now accounts for around half of the city centre’s residents.

Interestingly this city centre growth isn’t exclusive to Leeds either, with the report suggesting that the populations of most large city centres throughout England and Wales more than doubled between 2001 and 2011. It also reveals that the majority of city dwellers are likely to be well-educated, single professionals or students.

It’s quite clear that people are increasingly buying

into the city living lifestyle although it’s very di erent to the traditional British idea of a three-bedroom semi-detached house in a suburb with a nice garden and a car parked outside to drive to and from work in.

Across Europe and the world, city centres have long been some of the most desirable places to live and it seems that the major British cities are fi nally beginning to follow this trend.

We manage Leeds city centre’s largest rental portfolio and tenant demand continually outstrips supply. Each year we see growing numbers of people deciding that it makes sense for them

to live close to where they work and play.

Around half of these don’t have a car and walk to work. Many love having the city’s fantastic retail o erings on their doorstep and lots fully embrace city life by eating out and socialising every night of the week (not just at the weekend) – city living really does o er a lifestyle like no other and we’re sure the numbers will keep on growing!

CITY CENTRE POPULATION SOARS

Administering a Will can be a legal and emotional minefi eld, so choose your executors carefully.

Few legal documents in life are as important as your Will. Yet, unlike your employment contract, marriage certifi cate or any number of other crucial documents, you will not be around to ensure that its terms are properly respected. So who should you rely on to manage the legal process as your executor?

You may be inclined to ask a close family member, like a spouse or child. But it is important to remember that your choice of executor carries legal weight and that the responsibilities of the position have been defi ned by an Act of Parliament. “It may not be

enough for an executor to be loyal,” says Suzanne Lurie, partner at solicitors Linder Myers. “He or she should also be capable of dealing with the deceased’s money and property, and carrying out their wishes in strict accordance with the Will.”

There are therefore several criteria worth bearing in mind as you or those close to you think about whom to appoint to this important role. To begin with, an executor must be aged 18 or more and of ‘sound mind’. It is preferable to choose someone likely to live longer than you, as well as someone trustworthy and reliable.

You may appoint between one and four executors (two is typical) but it is important that executors can work together e ectively, as arguments cost both time and money. It is also advisable to choose executors who live in the same country, as it is harder to manage the process from abroad; and it is best to ask an executor’s permission in advance, so as to give them the right to refuse.

Death duties

“It is important to realise that what you are asking of an executor is extensive and can become onerous, however good your relationship,” counsels Lurie. “The payment of all debts and the distribution of assets does not mark the end of an executor’s role. If mistakes are made, their involvement could last for up to six years.”

It is worth therefore considering for a moment the number of tasks an executor will have to fulfi l.

An executor must register the death, value the estate (which may involve writing to banks and fi nancial institutions), and assess debts and liabilities. A ‘grant of probate’ will need to be applied for, probate and tax forms will need completing to assess Inheritance Tax obligations, and the tax will then need paying, which can involve raising funds if the estate’s funds cannot cover it. The executor must collect all assets and money, pay all debts and bills (including funeral expenses), and prepare accounts for the estate. He or she must then distribute the estate in

accordance with the terms of the Will and deal with any claims which might arise, such as from a disappointed benefi ciary. An executor can even be held personally responsible if debts are not paid, or if the estate is not distributed correctly. Nevertheless, there are advantages to involving someone who knew the deceased well. Given these risks, some people choose to employ two executors, one personal and one professional. While the former has intimate knowledge of the deceased (and therefore understands his/her wishes well), the latter (often a solicitor) is well acquainted with the law and with the responsibilities of an executor.

If there are trusts in the Will, executors usually become trustees and their duties will continue during the life of the trust. The employment of a professional trustee ensures that a long-lived trust need not create administrative problems. “A professional trustee costs more in the short term, but plays a vital role in ensuring that an estate is smoothly and e ciently handled at what is already an emotional time,” advises Lurie.

TOP REASONS FOR CHANGING JOBS?

Thinking about changing your job this year? You’re not the only one.

Many employees will leave their current jobs this year for various reasons. More than a third of UK workers (37%) are hoping to leave their current job in 2015, this is double the amount of people this time last year (19%). The Institute of Leadership and Management conducted a survey regarding our career plans for 2015 and better pay was surprisingly not the top answer. Of the people looking for new positions, nearly two-thirds (59%) were looking for a better opportunity to progress

in their chosen career, more than those looking for a better salary (56%), with a quarter of people planning to make the leap because they feel underappreciated – up almost 10% from 2014, and half of people were looking for a more interesting role. Top eight reasons British workers change jobs in 2015

• More opportunity for progression (59%)

• Better pay (56%)• More interesting job

(50%)• Better management

(30%)• More opportunity for

training/development (27%)

• More opportunity for fl exible working (18%)

• Nicer people (5%)• Better options for

parental leave (3%)

Employers need to recognise the importance of career progression using a structured training and development plan, which provides opportunities for further professional development with

training courses or through higher education.

Companies need to adapt to this change and ensure their employees are engaged with the company and acknowledged for the great work they do. If you want your employees to be passionate about your business they need to understand it and feel apart of it.

With workloads increasing and responsibilities growing it is easy for employees to get lost within a business. A good manager will ensure your employees feel valued using good people management skills and constant communication.

Four simple words; recognise, praise, reward and teach.

QI am a forty year old fairly fit guy and I have started to get varicose veins. Am I just being vain or is there something I can do about them? Or even worse could it be something more serious to worry about?

Darren

AHi Darren. This is a very common problem affecting about 1 in 3 adults. They occur more in women and develop when valves inside veins that are there to stop blood flowing backwards stop working properly. Blood then collects in the vein causing it to become varicose - meaning ‘abnormally swollen and knotty’. They commonly appear on the back of the calf and on the inside of the thigh. This is because standing and walking puts extra pressure on the veins in the lower body. They can also occur in other parts of the body too, including the oesophagus, scrotum and rectum.

There are a number of risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing varicose veins. Gender - Women are more likely to be affected. Family History - Risk is increased if a close family member has the condition. Age - As we age our veins start to lose their elasticity and the valves inside them stop working as well. Weight - Being overweight puts extra pressure on the veins. Occupation - Jobs that require long periods of standing increase risk. Pregnancy – During pregnancy the amount of blood in the body increases to help support the developing baby and increased hormone levels causes the muscular walls of the blood vessels to relax, increasing the risk of developing varicose veins.

Some people with varicose veins do not experience any pain or discomfort, while others are more severely affected. In these people symptoms can include: aching, heavy legs, swollen feet and ankles, muscle cramps and dry, itchy skin over the affected vein. Symptoms can be worse during warm weather or after standing up for long periods of time.

For most people, varicose veins do not present a serious health problem. They may have an unpleasant appearance, but they should not affect the circulation or cause any long-term health problems. Most varicose veins do not require any treatment.

Varicose veins are more likely to require treatment if they are causing significant discomfort or if complications develop. These can include thrombophlebitis (inflammation), varicose eczema, a condition that causes the skin to become red, scaly and flaky. Blisters and crusting of the skin called Lipodermatosclerosis may develop and ultimately an ulcer may form.

There are now a number of different surgical procedures to remove varicose veins, although the first treatment is usually compression stockings. Compression stockings are specially designed to steadily squeeze the legs to improve your circulation. They are tightest at the ankle and get gradually looser as they go further up the leg.The most common surgical technique is ligation and stripping, which involves tying off the vein in the affected leg and then removing it. Other treatments include sclerotherapy which involves injecting a chemical into the vein. The chemical scars the veins, which seals them closed. Newer treatments include radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser treatment. Both techniques also seal the veins.

I hope that helps. We have vascular specialists at the Nuffield that can help if you are worried.

City JobsIt’s not all doom and gloom out there on the Jobs frontCraig Burton offers us some helpful hints!

Just Do IT!Dale Carnegie is the first personal development coach Born in 1888. Most “Coaches” still use his material as a basis of their courses. This is a mantra we were made to shout and cream in a training course; “I know people in the “Ranks” who will stay in the “Ranks” why? I’ll tell you why; BECAUSE THEY HAVENT GOT THE ABILITY TO GET THINGS DONE! I beat myself up over this more than anything. JUST DO IT! The most frustrating, annoying and stressful thing for any manager is having to ask for a reasonable request twice. There are only three reasons why people don’t finish or in some case “Start” a task. a) They don’t know HOW to do it. b) They don’t’ WANT to do it. C) They are sticking their FINGERS up! JUST DO IT, if you don’t know how-ask. “Doers are winners, always” think about the most successful people you work with. I bet they just DO IT

We’ve had some interesting feedback from the last column and some great questions.

I work for a Manufacturing company and we are constantly reminded by permanent staff that “We are only temps” and that we can get laid off at any time and that we ‘re the reason they don’t get offered overtime. Its making me feel like I’m not valued what should I do? Geoff-Leeds 10

This doesn’t happen as often as it did but there are still some companies that still discriminate against temporary workers. We see it with more Eastern European workers. Let’s get this straight. Temporary and Flexible workers are one of the main reason the UK can stay competitive in Europe. Contract workers and Temps in my eyes are amazing. They often have to learn new skills in a much shorter time frame than permanent worker and have less job security. Tell your agency contact. They should be offering you appraisals and reviews and in some cases chance to do NVQ training if they are any good. You should receive regular e-mails and texts from your agency checking on your well-being too. They have moral a responsibility to make you feel valued. (Or find a new job. Vote with your feet! Great people are always in demand)

I am currently temping in a Customer Service role. Permanent roles keep coming up and I’m never selected for them. Even though I’ve been doing the same job here longer than other temps. Donna- Leeds 2

This is a difficult one Donna. I’m afraid the first thing I’d look at is “Myself”. Am I a “Doer”? Am I punctual? Do I ask the right questions? Am I eager to learn new things? Do I have the right attitude to work? Attitudes are contagious at work (is yours worth catching?) This may sound shallow; but do you look right? Dress to impress at work. You’re there a long time and whether we admit this or not. People WILL judge you by how you present yourself. I’m sat writing this with a bandaged knee in a suit shirt and tie. I could just as easily come in my slippers to work.. If none of the above just ask your supervisor “what would have to happen for you to be considered”. (Do not be confrontational though or you’ve no chance lovey)

My boss keeps looking at me in that “Old Fashioned” way. Whenever he walks past me he’ll squeeze my shoulder or brush against me. He asks me all about my private life and where I drink and If I have a boyfriend. Should I report him? Ryan-Leeds 12

Crikey Ryan. OK, first and foremost 48% of relationships are “Work” generated. Think about it. If there wasn’t any harmless flirting at work the UK would have a population plummet in a breath! Your Boss hasn’t actually done anything “Wrong” if this becomes sexual and uncomfortably personal that’s a another matter and you need to request a meeting with a senior member of the company or even just let your boss know “Formally” but calmly he’s making you feel this way. He may not even realise you’ve taken it like this. Document it too, just in-case it ’s more than a little affection. (I wish I had a fiver for every Secretary that ran off with the Boss)

Best of Luck!

Craig

theworksrec.co.uk0333 3449 444

[email protected]

Craig Burton is a seasoned specialist recruiter of over twenty one years with The Works Recruitment

Our workplaces today are full of kind, hard-working and well intentioned managers who don’t realise that they are actually being cruel to some of their sta . ‘It is impossible to fi re someone with over two years’ service’ is a common held misconception which is costing the economy, organisations, and the reputation of the managers and individuals dear. Sue Ingram, author of ‘FIRE WELL - How to fi re sta so they thank you’ and www.conversewell.com, believes that letting an individual stay unchallenged where it is obvious they are failing is the cruellest non-action a manager can take. Slowly, over time the individual’s confi dence and self-

worth will erode leading them in a downward spiral that they may fi nd very di cult to climb out of. Research (conducted by Gallup and published October 2013 gathered from 230,000 workers in 142 countries) indicates an amazing 24% of sta are actively disengaged from their work and would actually support activity detrimental to the organisation. Ingram suggests this crazy situation of ignoring poor performance is created because: 1) People do not see themselves as others see them. We want to come across in a certain way and, as we so rarely receive feedback about how we actually show up, we continue to believe that we are behaving as we want to do. The same is true of poor performing sta . They want to do well and they think they are. But if no-one takes the time to tell them otherwise they are left in the dark and perplexed as to why they are not progressing in their career. 2) A slow decline. Remember the parable of the frog in the boiling water? This explains why

people stay in jobs for which they are clearly unsuited and why managers never get around to providing the necessary feedback. The situation deteriorates so slowly that for both parties it just becomes the way it is. Often it is not until an outside person comes in and then calls the organisation on its way of behaving that it becomes apparent. 3) Di cult Conversations. These types of feedback conversations with under-performing sta are traditionally known as Di cult Conversations. So naturally both managers and sta will look for reasons to avoid having the conversation. And then, if the situation becomes untenable and a conversation is forced upon them, both will go in with the expectation of a di cult conversation leading to defensive/aggressive behaviour from one or both. But it does not have to be this way. It is possible to fi re people and have them thank you for doing so. Ingram suggests it starts with the manager being clear on the required outcome from the conversation; that the individual needs to become both happy and successful in their work. If that is within their

existing job great, but if this means that they leave to fi nd a more suitable job role for them, then so be it.

Next the manager needs to learn how to present the feedback and necessary improvements in a calm and factual way, showing great respect for the individual and for any choices they may make. Then the manager needs to follow the formal process all the way through to termination if that proves necessary. UK employment law is actually simple, straightforward and does its job very well. Remember to follow your formal processes to the letter, collate and record evidence and all informal and formal conversations, and act reasonably at all times. It is that simple. Be kind to your poor performing sta . Conduct fair, considered, thoughtful and generous conversations where they are provided with the required feedback either to improve or to realise they are in the wrong job role for them. Put them out of their misery. Be generous, fi re them and they are likely to thank you for doing so.

It’s impossible to improve on the great PR job Wordsworth and Wainwright did for our much loved Lake District, but this month my other half and I (plus Hoshi the dog) discovered some recent additions to the landscape that even they would have appreciated.

From Leeds you can reach Lake Windermere in two hours, although we opted to base ourselves at Brockwood Hall self-catering lodges (ideal if you have a pooch or kids) which lie further away in the southwest corner of Cumbria. It was a perfect choice, as we received a free upgrade and our home for the week had all we needed, even a sauna. Everything is provided, right down to the essential bottle-opener!

Our break became something of a road-trip, as we were

determined to take in as many attractions as possible. The beauty of our location was that we were 20 minutes the coast yet just 30 from Coniston Water, which is where we enjoyed our fi rst breakfast, sitting in the sun and taking in the stunning lake view.

The great thing about the National Park is that every drive is spectacular, revealing one stunning vista after another. We loved every mile of the trip to our next destination, Windermere, and the bustling lakeside town of Bowness. Pubs, cafes and shops abound, and it’s also where popular sightseeing cruises depart from.

The Lakes attract hordes of tourists at weekends, so we opted to escape to the coast and avoid the crowds. We

voted St Bees our favourite spot with its gorgeous beach, and it’s also the start of the legendary coast-to-coast walk.

The remainder of the week saw us exploring all corners of the Lakes, even tackling the famous fells. We felt we were on top of the world when we climbed a trail o Honister Pass and gazed down on the shimmering Buttermere. After all this exercise, Brockwood Hall’s many facilities were much appreciated, as we enjoyed soothing massages and swimming in the pool.

I’d highly recommend a UK lodge break, especially if you have dogs and children. They o er an a ordable and most relaxing time.

If you have a question for Dr Jones please email him at: [email protected] further information please visit:www.nu eldhealth.com

Dear Dr,I recently lost quite a bit of weight and I now have a lot baggy skin. I’m a 27 year old male and it is majority e ecting my confi dence. Is there something I could do about this issue? If so, how do I go about resolving it? I am willing to try just about anything at this point. Dear Dweller,There are certain over the counter creams that may be able to help tighten up lose skin and it may be worth having a look at these. Skin peels can also have a useful e ect on tightening things up but if there is a lot of excess skin then surgery may be needed. This would generally be classed as cosmetic and not funded by the NHS so you may need to consult a private plastic surgeon for advice. You can see one of my colleagues at the Nu eld who will be able to talk you through this.Dr J Hi Dr Jones.I am a young female and in good health but over the last few months I have noticed a sharp pain in one of my ovaries. Sometimes it can be a constant ache throughout the day and then other days it could be caused by driving over a speed bump. Is this something I should be concerned about? Dear Dweller,Well it sounds as if further investigation is needed

to rule out any serious problems. From its position and pain on movement means it could just be muscular. Does it change with your periods, i.e get worse or better during this time? Does the pain radiated to anywhere such as into the groin or to the back? Do you feel bloated and is your weight stable. The answer to these may help us decide what the cause may be. I would see your GP so they can exam the area concerned and undertake any appropriate investigations.Dr J

HI Dr J,I hope you can help me. I am in my mid fi fties and I’ve being thinking about having some fi llers or Botox to try and reduce the appearance of wrinkles around my eyes. Are these safe to have? I’m in two minds about it and want to be fully informed before I have anything done. Dear Dweller,Generally for wrinkles around the eyes Botox is used. This is perfectly safe in this area and can have some good results. This treatment is available at the Nu eld and other clinics in Leeds such as Love Your Smile on Low Road.Dr J

City Health Ask Dr Jones

Leeds trained NHS/Private GP & Honorary Lecturer at Leeds School of Medicine Dr Jones presents his monthly medical column.

Great Britain Athlete and British Record Holder, John Lane is back again this month to give you his fi tness tips to help you get the best out of your health and fi tness.

Enjoy this months tips!

Break It Up

Although doing a 30-40 session either before or after work is more common these days, breaking your training up during the day is just as easy and gives you the same results. If time isn’t on your side, doing four 10 minutes worth of exercise that is staggered out over the day is a great and simple way of cramming everything in. Simple exercises such as, press up, sits up, chin ups and static squats are a great example of easy exercises you can do whilst on the go.

Winter Blues

Training in the summer months is always more benefi cial and more appealing than training in the depth of winter! Its important not to lose motivation when winter hits. The harder you work in winter, the more you will see the results when the summer months roll around and you are enjoying the sunshine on holiday!

Planning is Key

Planning ahead is a very simple and e ective way of keeping focused and staying on track with your goals. Having something written down in your diary with a time and location always helps your motivational levels.

Sleeping Essentials

Sleep is underrated in aiding recovery. You should be aiming for at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night. The more you sleep, the more you are letting your body repair its muscles. The more energy you have, the faster your body recovers meaning the faster your fi tness will improve!

The Importance of Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It kick starts your immune system after waking up and provides you with all the energy you need to get through to lunch time. A well balanced breakfast should allow you not to get peckish in-between meals and start to snack.

1. “Slow gains add up really fast.

I want you to go into the gym this week, pick your favourite exercise - squats for example - and lift 1kg more than you did last week. You are not allowed to do 2kg more, only 1kg.

Do you think you could do that? Most people would be like, “Of course. That’s easy.” And they’re right.

But here’s the funny thing: if you do that every week, then you’re going to add 50kg to your lifts in the next year. Stick with that for 2 years and you’re lifting 100kg more. How many people do you know who are lifting 100kg more than they were 2 years ago? I don’t know many. Most people are so obsessed with forcing out an extra 10kg this week that they never fi nd the patience to make slower, but greater, long-term gains. It all comes down to the power of average speed. The next two years are going to come and go. The time will pass by anyway, might as well be climbing the whole time.”

2. “Do you fi nd yourself being really, really “good” with your food choices during the day, only to inhale an entire unplanned tub of ice cream in the evenings? Do you fi nd this happening a little too often?

You cave in at night because that’s when your willpower is at it’s lowest. You’ve gone the entire day

resisting chocolate, drinking your co ee black (even though you love cream), and turning down anything considered “bad”. I challenge you to change that mindset. Because after all, what’s the point of being so “good” if you undo all of that goodness - plus more - at night? Doesn’t that defeat the very purpose of what you were trying to do?

Throw yourself a bone. Relax your everyday food choices. Food is not in black and white. Nobody - I repeat, nobody - ever got fat from having a bit of cream in their co ee. And you cannot derail all your progress from just ONE cookie. I promise you that. No food is inherently good, and no food (in moderation) is inherently bad. There should be no guilt associated with food choice whatsoever.

For better long-term progress, make sure you allow yourself a few treats from time to time. For me, that means things like cereal, perhaps some desert or even a doughnut now and then. Everything else I eat comes from whole nutritious food sources: varied selections of meat, vegetables and fruit. I also consume dairy foods regularly. These foods actually make the majority of my intake for the day.

Night time cave ins using this strategy? Zero. Urges to binge? Zero. Food groups restricted? Zero.Dietary satisfaction? 100%.”

3. “Q: Will eating food, like carbohydrates, late at night make me fat?

This is a myth. Last time I checked carbs, protein and fat don’t change their molecular structure from one time of the day to another. Carbs at 7am are the same as carbs at 10pm. Your body doesn’t know the di erence. I don’t know about your body, but mine doesn’t have some secret digestive clock that turns everything into fat after a certain time. This myth most likely came about by people who consumed more calories than they should’ve and did most of this excess eating at night.

The only way for you to gain weight is if you consume more calories than you burn. If you overeat in the morning or night, you will gain weight. The time of day in which you overeat doesn’t matter.

For some people, the only time when they get a break from their hectic schedule to eat is at night time. Don’t ever feel guilty for eating at this time.”

All the insider information from Elland Road and LeedsUnited, courtesy of LUFC Liaison Director, Debra Ware

The new season is well underway now and I think everyone would agree with saying we have enjoyed a positive start. Away wins at Derby and MK Dons have given the fans who follow the club up and down the country plenty to cheer about, and we’ve already seen plenty of excitement at Elland Road.

When the transfer window closed at the start of September, we had eight new signings on board and the majority of them are aged 24 or under. That just demonstrates the young team that is being here. The club held onto its star

players over the summer, so you can see why there is quite a bit of optimism around the place at the moment.

The head coach, Uwe Rosler, has said he is aiming for a top-ten fi nish – which would be an improvement on last season – but that’s not to say that we can’t challenge for promotion. After all, a top-ten fi nish could be anywhere between tenth and fi rst place in the league...

It seems as though all eyes have been on Leeds United in recent weeks after four of the fi rst six games were broadcast live on Sky. The away game at

Middlesbrough was also televised and it just shows that despite being out of the Premier League for 11 years, there is still plenty of interest in Leeds United.Elland Road was put further under the spotlight in September as the stadium hosted two Rugby World Cup fi xtures, which were televised across the world to millions of fans. We’re not used to seeing the

rugby posts up here, but it was great to be part of such a huge occasion and a privilege to welcome the Rugby World Cup to Leeds United.

Watch this space for lots more exciting news and events coming very soon.

Till Next Time, Debra x

It seems the nights are defi nitely drawing in and there’s a distinct chill in the air. Autumn is defi nitely on our doorstep. Although I love this time of year, with Christmas looming and a general cosyness all around, I was ill prepared for the coming season and needed to buy warmer clothes.

You know I believe life should be fun, shopping is fun and I defi nitely participated fully. So much so that my purchases required a clearing of wardrobe space. I decided to be ruthless, after all, the ‘I will get back into these’ garments had become a little too ‘vintage’.

With black bin liners to hand I set to work. Clearing out the old for the new is good for the soul. I reminisced as the bags were fi lled, pairing with each garment a memory or two. It was as I moved onto my shoes and handbags that I realized how expensive some of them were and how little they had been used. I remembered that one handbag in particular had taken quite a bit of saving for. For months before I bought it I looked at it in the shop and felt sure that my life would be better if I owned that bag. Yet, here I was sending it o to my local charity shop with so many of my other ‘must have’ purchases.

This really clarifi ed something I had been thinking about a lot lately. Things don’t always make us happy! How many things do you have in your home that you had to have; things that you thought would make you happy, yet you never use them? How much worse o would you be if some of those things never made their way into your home?

In my line of work I am privileged to meet a great many people, from all walks of life, every day people and celebrities alike. You would think that the ‘successful’ people that I meet, the ones with the most money, best cars and biggest houses are the happiest, wouldn’t you? I have discovered

that this is very rarely true. Don’t get me wrong I know there are happy millionaires, but there are as many happy people on the minimum wage too. I have discovered during the years of working with all these people that happiness is nothing to do with what you have and what you don’t. Happiness from things is fl eeting and if you are unhappy nothing you buy will ever make that right in the long run.

I have noticed that the happy people I have met in my life all share similar traits. They are all truly grateful for what they have, no matter how much that is. They love what they do and they don’t do it for the money; fi nancial success is a byproduct of doing what you’re good at and enjoy. They love themselves enough to do what is right for them. They care about others and willingly share what they have but not at the cost of their own wellbeing. They appreciate the free things in life like daybreak, the sunsets, the parks, the oceans, nature and other such miracles. They know how to laugh, live in the moment, let go of the past and count their blessings every day. They don’t give up on their dreams and you will never here them say why me when things don’t click together for them straight away. Some may have expensive handbags, some may not, but they are happy regardless.

I hope that you are one of these people, but if not, why not adopt one of their traits. Its defi nitely cheaper and the happiness is much longer lasting.

Keep warm and happy till next time!

Radio Aire and TV Presenter Connor Phillips lets us know about all latest gossip and celeb news at Radio Aire.

As the sun creeps back in behind the clouds for another year (I don’t believe a word about this so-called ‘Indian Summer’ on the way), we get ourselves ready for Autumn and the best things coming to Leeds – more about that in a minute!

Since the last time I sat down to write this article – Radio Aire has once again been the talk of the entertainment world. We managed to bag an exclusive interview with one of the most talked about celebs who was given an unusual leg-up on his quest to start an new, if not unusual journey.

We are of course talking about Abs from the boyband ‘Five’ or ‘5ive’ if I try to be down with the kids of the late 90’s! Abs, Abz Love or to give him his real name Richard Abidin Breen has decided to sell many of his prized possessions as he looks to set up life on a farm and try to live o the land for as long as he possibly can. One of these items was his Brit Award – one of the music industries most sought after awards. Abz initially put the statuette on eBay expecting to get in the region of a few thousand pounds to allow him to buy feed for his pigs! Then things got interesting, the bids started coming in, over and over again until it reached the climax of £1,001,000. Yes you read that

right. Abs called into the show from his remote farm house where he has little mobile signal, no TV and no internet – he was a little surprised to say the least. Catch Abs on the farm on BBC 1 and hear the full interview on @RadioAire or on The Connor Phillips Show Facebook page!

Also on the show we celebrated Red Head day UK. Without the amazing red heads in our world we wouldn’t have the hits from Ed Sheeran, Jess Glynne and our sister station Radio Aire 2 would have no access to Simply Red or can you imagine life without Lulu?! Also I found out that I was an honorary ginger as Jessica from Red Head Day UK declared I was a ‘Chin-ger’, where I occasionally get a few ginger hairs on the chin of my facial hair!

The Connor Phillips show on Radio Aire launched the (now world famous) Glove Box Bingo game that you can join us and play. All you need is access to a glove box, car, van, bus, forklift, aeroplane, we don’t care, be sure to listen daily from 3pm to fi nd out more!

And now for something a bit special! I am delighted to welcome the brand new Breakfast Show to Radio Aire in the form of Stu and Kelly! This amazingly funny and hardworking duo will be waking Leeds up every morning from 6am. Take 5 minutes out of your day to see what all the fuss is about and I guarantee you will fi nd the new home for your radio in the mornings – and don’t forget afternoons from 3pm!

For more news and footage visit www.ConnorPhillips.tv or get onto @ConnorPhillips on Twitter for updates and news!

Until next time - behave yourself,

The Utah Saints are one of those world famous bands that if you were into house music in the 90’s and the noughties, you’d be hard pressed not to know some of their dance fl oor classics.  I remember being in absolute awe of the band when I heard them on Radio One in around 1992, and it wasn’t until 1997 that I found out they were a Leeds band, and in my eyes that made them even more amazing.

Tim Garbutt and Jez Willis met right at the start of the rave scene when Tim was DJ’ing in a club in Harrogate. Tim used to do a Friday night with a friend in a small 150 capacity basement club with DJ’s like Sasha and Graeme Park which eventually got closed down by a Fire o cer as he couldn’t get down the stairs or past the 400 crammed into the venue!

Jez was playing funk, disco and hip hop on the Saturday night and as Tim said; “I went to his night and he came to mine, we struck up a friendship and Utah Saints was born out of that. Jez used to bring tapes over on the Friday of tracks that he had made in his bedroom and that is how our fi rst track - ‘What Can You Do For Me’ started life.” Both Tim and Jez soon realised they were onto something big when their fi rst track, which reached the Top 10 in the UK Charts was a global success.  The Utah’s have had a career that has spanned many years from 1991 to today, and has involved Dj’ing, producing, world tours, and stage scheduling for festivals.  One of the most memorable years for the band was 2008, said Tim; “I think the best year for us was when we released ‘Something Good 08’, I guess it was a pinnacle for us because that was a track that we made in ’92 and everything had kind of gone full circle, and with that track coming out again and doing so well it gave us the opportunity to go out and tour

all over the world, and play some amazing gigs and festivals.”

The band still have a studio in Leeds, located just out of the city centre which has hosted many other DJ’s and producers including; Denney, Miguel Campbell, Grum, Hauswerks and Riley and Durrant to name a few.  Tim says; “It’s great to see new talent breaking through to national and international levels out of Leeds.”

For many years in Leeds the Utah Saints were known for promoting the successful Sugabeat Club, which then ran in the Elbow Room.  Sugabeat was such a well-known club night that venues in Edinburgh and London wanted a part of the Leeds night, taking the Utah’s around the UK weekly to DJ. Both Tim and Jez knew that there would be a fi nite time for Sugabeat as a club night, and that it would lead onto the next stage of their career.  In 2015 this was almost certainly the case when the band were asked to curate a stage at the Beatherder Festival.  There were many Leeds DJ’s and artists performing alongside the Utah Saints, including: Paul Woolford, PBR Streetgang, Ralph Lawson and Tim Sheridan plus loads more. We can but wonder as to what the next element of the Utah Saints brand will unfold, and I for one can’t wait to fi nd out.

This month’s Leeds Own subject, 20 year old singer/song writer Ben Lancaster, was spotted by the City Dweller crew whilst partying at the Masquerade for Macmillan Ball, held at the Marriott Hotel, Leeds. His acoustic set of quirky covers and original songs had everyone up dancing, and here at the magazine we could tell it would only be a matter of time until word gets around of Ben’s talents. Wanting to fi nd out more about the guy with the guitar I met up with Ben to talk inspirations, aspirations, and of course his thoughts on our wonderful city.

What initially got you into music?

My parents noticed at a young age that I could sing so they encouraged it from then, I used to do singing competitions and things like that on holidays. I began playing the piano at 9 and then when teachers at my high school (Morley High School) discovered I could play they nurtured my interest in

music. When I was 15 all my friends played the guitar and I felt left out so I began learning that too.

What did you study at school?

In 6th form I did Performance Studies, Music A Level, History and Law. I am really into Musical Theatre, as well as singing, which was covered well by the dance and drama on the Performance Studies course. I am now in my fi nal year at Renaissance Arts which is a dance and musical theatre college based at the Yorkshire Dance Centre and Northern Ballet in Leeds, I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to attend, it is great studying there because I can work on both my passions of singing/ song writing and musical theatre.

How did you get into gigging?

I began singing in a band when I was 15, then I did my fi rst solo gig at 18. I started o doing

parties and weddings and then went onto bars. Around Leeds I’ve played at places such as The Wardrobe, The Bierkeller, and Around the World in 80 Beers.

What sort of music do you play at your gigs?

At gigs I tend to mainly play covers and judge what to play from the crowd. I like to do a mix of current songs that are in the top 40, and an Ed Sheeran track always goes down well. I also like to do abstract covers that you wouldn’t expect to be played acoustically such as Britney Spears ‘Hit Me Baby’, also depending on the situation I like to throw in an original track of my own when I can.

Where do you get your inspiration for your music?

I am inspired by the likes of Ed Sheeran and Lewis Watson, I especially appreciate Ed’s earlier stu before he became massive, you can see so much progression in his music, I feel I can relate to where he began from. I also have a bit of a Grime guilty pleasure with the likes of Skepta. My music taste is pretty varied, if you had a look on my ITunes you’d see its very mixed.

What are your plans for the future?

As I am in my fi nal year at Renaissance it is time to start auditioning for up and coming roles in musical theatre productions. I am in the studio in October with Jiimi Naylor from The Pigeon Detectives to record my own tracks. I also work with The Music Study

which support young artists so they are helping me with my future prospects. I will continue to do my gigging and I want to keep both my singing/song writing and musical theatre interests going, I enjoy them equally so have no preference to go for one over the other.

What are your thoughts on Leeds as a city?

I love Leeds so much and feel grateful to have grown up here. It is always expanding, there is a new place opening every week and there’s so much to do, I look at it as the capital of the North.

Where do you tend to go out around Leeds?

As a student there’s something on every night, I go to Tiger Tiger on Tuesdays a lot and most nights usually end up in Prsym, bar wise I also really like Smokestack, Fibre and The Wardrobe. To eat out I love Fazenda and can’t wait to try Get Baked and Reds.

If you’re keen to fi nd out more about Ben, or want to check out his music, head to his social media profi les: Soundcloud: Ben LancasterInstagram: @BenyouareadiamondTwitter: @3enLancaster

There is no doubt that he’s one to watch!

BEN LANCASTERHere at City Dweller we’re getting quite a collection of talented and driven people for our ‘Leeds Own’ editorial, and this month there is no exception… Rachel chats to 20 year old singer/song writer Ben Lancaster, to talk inspirations, aspirations, and of course his thoughts on our wonderful city.

Welcome to my fi rst City Dweller column in my 30’s! It doesn’t really feel very di erent in all honesty, I’m mainly just pretty proud of myself that I didn’t spend the last few months in some kind of panic/stress/anger/crisis at entering my third decade.

I’ve got to give a huge shout out to everybody at the Fibre Penthouse for looking after me so well and hosting my birthday drinks… I had one of the best nights ever with some lovely people (even if I now have to redecorate my living room after my fl at mate managed to launch an espresso martini at the wall during some 6am drinks back at home… nice one Ben). As ever there is so much going on in Leeds and I think one of the biggest things of the last month or so was the announcement that the 2015 MOBO’s are being held at the First Direct Arena on Wednesday 4th November. It’s really cool that one of the UK’s biggest awards ceremonies will be held in our city. The line-up on the night is always really decent so I’m excited to see who they pull out of the bag for this year… Tickets are already on sale if you fancy being part of some Leeds history! It’s one of those occasions where I wish I could

blag the next morning o work, there are bound to be some after parties going on and they really don’t mix well with a 5am alarm clock.

We’ve got our big charity day coming soon for Global’s Make Some Noise. This year we’re focusing on smaller projects and charities that struggle to get heard. We’ve got loads going on including challenges, celebrity takeovers and prizes to win… Check capitalfm.com to fi nd out more and please get involved if you can! Lastly for this month I want to share a picture with you – we’d been discussing this new trend for ‘Unicorn Hair’ on the show… Basically it’s girls getting their hair dyed multi-coloured… JoJo took it upon herself to order a unicorn hair wig which she spent the morning strutting around in, JoJo Minaj!

LEEDS GUIDE & LISTINGS

It’s a good time to be Ellie Goulding. Our latest cover star has taken her fame to the next level in the past year and after

announcing a new tour and a new album, she’s only going to get bigger.

Since the release of her debut album

‘Lights’, she has sold

over 20 million records,

had two Number One albums, won two Brit Awards and had over two billion YouTube views.

But it was January of 2015 when Ellie Goulding released ‘Love Me Like You Do’, the soundtrack to the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. The single was a monster in itself, becoming a major success all across the world, racking up over 15 million streams the week of its release and hitting number one in 70 di erent countries; Ellie Goulding’s stock reached a new level.

Now, Ellie Goulding is capitalising on this success as she releases her fi rst album in three years. The music on her new album, ‘Delirium’ is bigger and better than anything she’s done before. It features tracks such as ‘Love Me Like You Do’, ‘On My Mind’ and her collaboration with Calvin Harris, ‘Outside’ and

most music experts are expecting the album to

be her third successive number one album.

Talking about the new album, Ellie said, “A part of me views this album as an experiment – to make a big pop album. I made a conscious decision that I wanted it to be on another level.”

It’s obvious that the album is a culmination of years of work for Ellie Goulding, it’s a mix of powerful anthems, catchy pop songs and emotional ballads. A combination of happiness, sadness, ecstasy and

heartbreak creates 22 songs for her incredible deluxe album.

It doesn’t stop there for Ellie Goulding, though. Accompanying her new album release, she’s also announced a nationwide tour that includes a date at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

Praise for Ellie Goulding’s performances have came in from all angles. Rolling Stone Magazine compared her voice to Dolly Parton, while one line of praise said that, “Goulding’s place at the top of the pops is as authentic as it is deserved.”

It’s expected that tickets will sell out quickly, they are available at www.fi rstdirectarena.com

BACK IN 2006, CAMERON EDWARDS AND JOE LENZIE MET AT LEEDS UNIVERSITY AT A DRUM AND BASS NIGHT. THE TWO HIT IT OFF AND ONLY TWO YEARS LATER, THEY FORMED THEIR OWN RECORD LABEL.

After that, it was years of hard graft as they attempted to reach the big time.

Nine years later, they’ve worked with Ella Henderson, Paloma Faith, Ella Eyre, Labrinth and plenty of other huge names, they’ve had two number one singles, ‘Nobody to Love’ and ‘Changing’, and they’re fi nally about to release their debut album.

‘Life’ is expected to be released at the end of the year and is expected to top the charts.

You can see the duo perform live at Plug in She eld on Wednesday 28th October too.

THE SESSIONS IS A LIVE RE-STAGING OF THE BEATLES AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS. A ONCE IN A LIFETIME BACKSTAGE PASS TO A MAGICAL MOMENT IN HISTORY AND EACH SONG IS PLAYED EXACTLY AS IT WAS RECORDED.

For the fi rst time in a generation, all instrumentation, arrangements and vocals are identical to the original recordings – the closest thing to actually being in the studio with John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Overseen by the legendary recording engineer Geo Emerick, authentic sounds are blended with an immersive environment. The original studio

has been meticulously restored while the singularity of each album is captured through unique choreography. Dazzling cinematic e ects take you on a journey from early Liverpool to swinging London and the phenomenon of Beatlemania.

This is more than a tribute, this is a portal to music history – telling the Beatles story like you’ve never heard before. If you’re a huge fan of the Beatles or you simply just want to watch a bit of music history then this is perfect for you!

The Sessions comes to Leeds next May and you can buy tickets at www.fi rstdirectarena.com

THE ORDINARY BOYS RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE ‘FOUR LETTER WORD’, THE LEAD SINGLE FROM NEW ALBUM - WHICH IS OUT NOW!  After a hiatus of nearly 10 years, The Ordinary Boys are back with what is arguably their strongest album to date. Lead single ‘Four Letter Word’ is a soaring, energy driven statement of intent reminiscent of their 2004 debut ‘Over The Counter Culture’. A return to their former sound is no surprise, since the reformed line-up consists of the original trio – Preston, James Gregory and Charlie ‘Chuck’ Stanley - plus new member Louis Jones from celebrated power-pop band Spectrals on guitar.

“We think we have made a really special, exciting record,” Preston says. “One that has been fuelled by reunited childhood friendships, new friendships, rediscovery of the records that shaped us, and the drive to create something undeniably great. I’ve had the best year of my life making this album.”

When we spoke to them exclusively back in March this year, their lead singer Matt told us, “Short term we just want to play some enjoyable gigs and get people to come and enjoy them with us - sound a good plan?”

It sounds an excellent plan to us! So you can go and enjoy them at the Brudenell Social Club on the 26th November.
