REASONS FOR FINANCING

The investment into San Marcos wind farm creates significant local income. The project contributes to

the increase of clean energy resources in Honduras, helping the country to achieve a more

sustainable and independent energy mix. Market share of renewable energy will be enhanced,

serving additional 55,000 people with clean energy and together with the ground project nearly

220,000 people in total. The engagement counts 100% as climate friendly project, fully in compliance

with international / IFC environmental performance standards.

By providing a 15 year loan for the erection and operation of San Marcos II, DEG and the group of

lenders help to overcome the bottleneck for long-term project finance in the country of Honduras.

Increasing our investment into renewable energy in Honduras underlines DEG’s role in a developing

country that is of only little interest to commercial banks and therefore lacks alternative long-term

finance solutions. In addition, the project has a German component as the gearboxes of the Vestas

turbines will come from a German supplier.

Vientos de Electotécnica S.A. (“VESA”) is a SPV to

build and operate wind power plants in Honduras.

VESA was established in 2011 and belongs to

Grupo Terra, a well-known business group in Central

America under 100% Honduran ownership.

VESA operates a 50 MW wind power farm “San

Marcos” in Honduras since 2015, the financing of

which was already provided by DEG together with

FMO (lead), Proparco and OFID. The existing

20year PPA with Honduran utility ENEE allows for

the expansion of up to 25%. The same group of

lenders decided to finance such expansion which is
