  • Who we are and our commitment to you:

The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL) is a nationally accredited full service animal health diagnostic laboratory. Our goal is to provide timely and accurate diagnostic laboratory support to promote animal health.

    How we can help you:

Our state-of-the-art laboratory will assist you in diagnosing diseases or providing regulatory testing. We have one of the most accomplished pathology units in the country, ready to serve you by performing necropsies, reading biopsies, special stains, and other histological studies. Our clinical pathology section offers routine blood counts and chemistries, urinalysis, parasite identification, endocrinology, stone analysis and more. Our three microbiology sections can detect, isolate or identify veterinary pathogens of clinical importance and assist you in selecting the most appropriate antibiotic for treatment. They can also assist you in investigating and identifying emerging pathogens. Our toxicology section can detect, identify, and quantify numerous toxins and poisons that threaten animal health, including those found in plants and forage. Our serology section can measure antibody titers for many common diseases of equine, livestock and pets, and also provides a broad range of regulatory testing services to assist in the movement of animals to markets, import and export, shows, and special events. Our epidemiology section and ruminant extension veterinarian, in conjunction with all of our veterinary faculty and scientists, we can keep you informed regarding seasonal and other risks to animal health and provide consulting advice on how to detect and manage disease outbreaks. Finally, we can help you protect the public health through the detection of zoonotic diseases in animals.

  • UKVDL Services Conditions

    1. A $10 accession fee will be assessed for all cases except:

Regulatory cases Cases assigned to Clinical Pathology and/or Toxicology only

    2. A diagnostic case is defined as specimens submitted to VDL for diagnostic purposes on one or more

animals from one owner and residing at one premise. A complete history is requested to help our faculty and staff to provide the best diagnostic services for you and your client.

    3. A regulatory case is defined as specimens submitted to fulfill legal requirements for the movement of

animals (e.g. import/export, interstate) and in support of state and federal surveillance, control and eradication efforts. The $10 accession fee will not apply to these cases (e.g. EIA, Piroplasmosis). The submitter must fill out regulatory forms completely and specimens clearly labeled with the animal’s id/name.

    4. A necropsy case includes cases where the client has submitted an animal that has died for a complete

necropsy and ancillary testing to determine the cause of death. The price on our fee schedule for a necropsy is the total price for the case (not including the accession fee). However, a maximum of $200 of toxicological testing will be allowed on these cases. This cap may be waived by the Director or Associate Director on special cases. Any testing associated with a legal case will be billed in total (i.e. no capping).

    5. All samples submitted to the VDL become the property of the laboratory unless agreed to by written

agreement prior to submission. 6. The VDL does not provide euthanasia services. We reserve the right to not accept live animals to assure the

safety of our employees. Please arrange for euthanasia before submission to VDL for a necropsy. 7. Non-necropsy diagnostic cases will be billed a per test charge for all tests. A “non-necropsy” case is any

case submitted to VDL that does not involve a necropsy. 8. Out-of-state submissions will be billed at 150% of In-State fees, except where noted in our fee schedule.

Toxicology tests are priced the same either In-State or Out-of-State. Animals residing on premises in Kentucky will be billed at the In-State rate.

    9. Specimens referred to another laboratory will be assessed a $40 handling fee. 10. A fee of $25 will be assessed on packages that are leaking upon arrival at the laboratory. 11. The submitting veterinarian will be billed for all VDL services. Owners may submit animals for necropsy

with the approval of their veterinarian. In this instance, owners must pay for services at the time of specimen delivery. Payment cannot be accepted on Sundays. The UKVDL Receiving Section will contact the client for payment the week following services.

    12. Services are billed monthly and payment is due upon receipt. The VDL reserves the right to inactivate

accounts when payment for services is not received in a timely manner.

Edit Equine Arteritis Virus rRT-PCR (EAV or EVA Real Time RT-PCR)

10 mL anticoagulated blood, swab, wash, 200 mg tissue, 10 mL seminal fluid (see test notes), aspirate from upper respiratory tract; Two specimens for each animal tested are recommended (see test notes).

Contact the laboratory at 859-257-8283 or 257-7771 before submitting any specimen not listed.

    1 - 2 working days / MTWRF

Live Animal Testing: To optimize laboratory confirmation of a diagnosis of equine arteritis virus (EAV) infection, it is recommended that a nasopharyngeal swab or washing and an unclotted blood sample be obtained as early as possible following the onset of clinical signs or in suspect cases of unapparent EAV infection. At least 10 mL of blood should be collected into EDTA (or ACD but not heparin) anticoagulant. In suspected cases of EVA-related abortion, submit the entire fetus and placenta for laboratory examination. If submission of the entire fetus and placenta is not feasible, collect specimens of placental membranes, lung, spleen, thymus and liver into individual, leak-proof containers, clearly labeling each with animal ID, tissue and date of collection. Where a stallion is a suspect carrier of EAV, he should be collected and 10 mL of semen containing the sperm-rich fraction of the full ejaculate submitted for testing. While the PCR test may be performed on seminal fluids, however, for regulatory purposes, such specimens may also need to be tested by virus isolation.

Edit Equine Diarrhea Panel (Multiplex PCR) - Bacterial Panel

5 gr fecal specimen (at least), intestinal scraping, bacterial isolate, nucleic acid

Specimens are submitted in a well labeled leak-proof container maintained at cold temperature during transport. Do not submit fecal specimens in gloves, screw-cap tubes are preferred

/ 1-2 days/Only run on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This is a multiplex Real-time PCR assay. These test results are intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of Lawsonia intracellularis, Salmonella spp and Neorickettsia risticii (agent of potomac horse fever). Results should be considered in conjunction with the quality of specimen submitted, clinical signs and animal history. In case of positive results for Salmonella, aerobic culture can be requested and antimicrobial susceptibility performed.

Live Animal Testing: To optimize laboratory confirmation of a diagnosis of equine herpesviris 1 (EHV1) infection, it is recommended that both a nasopharyngeal swab or washing and an unclotted blood sample be obtained as early as possible following the onset of clinical signs or in suspect cases of unapparent EHV infection. At least 10 mL of blood should be collected into EDTA (or ACD but not heparin) anticoagulant. Special equine nasal swab sampling kits are now available through Gluck Equine Research Center, University of Kentucky (859-257-4757 ext. 81124). The swabs in these kits are 16 inches in length, a size not available from most distributors. The charge per animal for EHV1 PCR testing will be the same whether submitting a single specimen or the recommended pair of specimens. Postmortem Testing: For animals exhibiting signs suggestive of neurological herpesvirus submit well labeled fresh tissue, especially brain stem and submandibular lymph node tissue. For suspected EHV1 abortions submit the entire fetus and membranes. If not practical submit well labeled fresh tissue samples. The EHV1 pathotyping test is automatically performed on samples found to be positive using the EHV1 PCR test procedure.
