    VeryHappyisNotAlwaysEquallyHappyontheMeaningofVerbalResponseOptionsinSurveyQuestionsAbstractSurveyresearchisbasedonquestioningandrespondentstypicallyanswertoquestionsbypickingoneofseveralresponseoptions.Theseresponseoptionsarelabelledverballywithtermssuchasveryhappyorfairlyhappy.Responsescalesdifferinthenumberandwordingofresponseoptionsandthiscouldaffectthedegreeofhappinessdenotedbysuchwords.Ifso,scoresondifferentlywordedquestionsonthesametopiccannotbecomparedandthisreducestheopportunitiesforresearchsynthesisgreatly.Severalmethodsfortransformationhavebeendevelopedfordealingwiththatproblem,amongwhichtherecentlyproposedscaleintervalmethodinwhichjudgesratetheintervaldenotedbyverbalresponseoptionsonacontinuous010scale.Thismethodallowsaviewonthesizeoftheproblem.ApplicationofthescaleintervalmethodtocommonlyusedsurveyquestionsonhappinessinDutchlanguagerevealsconsiderabledifferences.Theimplicationsofthisforresearchsynthesisarediscussed.
