    PROTECT TEMPLES AND WATER BODIES!!

    Vedas ordain  åÁõÃÏ ™Ó  fiúÏ ∫yÊ NÏ  ÆÁ| oΩ @ å uå…eyƒz oΩ @ å uƒƒÃåÀœÁÁÆÁoΩ @ TÏ ÿÁz ƒÁ LÁz D uT¿:@ (Aruna Prasna-1) which means

there is Lord Resident in Water, hence don’t urinate in water, don’t spit in water and don’t bathe withoutclothes. Following vedic traditions our ancestors never used to do these bad deeds. They used to worshipwater as Lord Narayana like. Pushkar lake in Rajasthan and Neervanna perumal lake near Madras are allpart of 108 divya desams. Thanks to the ill-founded drainage systems unlike ancient ones, which haspolluted all the rivers, lakes and pious water bodies with all bad and non-eco-friendly practices completelyagainst Vedas. India has at present become one of the most fresh water starved lands of the world with allof its rivers, lakes and wetlands denigrated. Despite knowing their environmental, social and economicsignificance, city planners have willfully neglected and destroyed these water bodies including the divineGanges.

Today these water bodies are encroached, full of sewage and garbage. Because of unplanned urbanization, much of the landscape around the lakes has been covered by impervious surfaces. Considering the presentbleak water scenario of Indian cities, today we need our urban lakes and wetlands more than ever.

The increasing loss of urban water bodies has also happened in Hyderabad, within last 12 years.Hyderabad has lost 3245 ha. area of its water in the form of lakes and ponds (Times of India, 2012). Thereare endless examples in India that shows such devastating state of urban water bodies. Mohenjo-Daro andHarappan civilizations became extinct when water was lost. If rivers go dry , the civilizations will also godry. The conditions of rivers in many developing countries of Asia are precarious. They are largely used asdumping ground for industrial waste, municipal waste or garbage. The banks of rivers need to be protectedby planting trees as they only have the power to prevent the soil of the banks from erosion. Unfortunatelywe remember the rivers only when they are flooded or dried. We have thus denigrated the worshippablewater bodies which personify the Lord in the same way as we destroyed our temples in Telangana andAndhra through the thoughtless 30/87 Legislation.

Like the movement to protect our temples, time has come to undertake a movement for restoringsanctity and purity of water bodies through a proper water management system. “Save Ganga Project” or

“Save Yamuna project” have consumed billions of rupees. Over 180 drains join into the river Yamuna inDelhi alone and many more on the way to Mathura and Mathura itself. If each one of us take vows toprevent flow of filthy water into rivers and prevent drains leading to rivers, much of the problems will besolved. We have to start with ourselves. The drainage waters need to be separately treated and recycledfor certain selective domestic and agrarian uses.

The recent World Cultural Festival’2016 event has brought into focus in an unprecedented way theneed for a clean Yamuna thus serving the larger purpose of the National water Tribunal. The suggestionmade by the Hon’ble Delhi Chief Minister on the stage of the event itself in the presence of several CentralMinisters for Sri Sri Ravishankar Guruji to use his good offices and influence with both the Governmentsand spearhead the effort to clean Yamuna need to be implemented.

We are facing a terrible drought in Telangana State for past many years. We have committed a greatsin by letting drainage water into countless lakes like Osman sagar which is personification of Lord Chilkur

Balaji himself. The Telangana government has named its programme of restoration of tanks as “MissionKakatiya” as a tribute to the Kakatiya dynasty rulers who had built a large number of irrigation tanks inTelangana. Let us all appreciate the efforts of Sri T Harish Rao, the Irrigation minister of Telangana and prayfor the success of this ambitious project with the help of the people of Telangana and this country. We haveto learn from the message given by Sri Sri and the Art of Living Foundation. If we have to survive we, shouldthink of doing prayaschittam by reviving our temples through a strong Telangana Dharmika Parishad whichwill bring rains by grace of Almighty and saving Osman Sagar and other lakes. Let’s properly treat thedrainage water in village treatment plants and recycle water for various agricultural and other utility purposes.

VAK and The Temples Protection Movement appeals to all the Devotees to participate in ‘Save Waterbodies and temples movement’. Let’s restore the piety of natural drinking water bodies.

     INCOMPREHENSIBLE IN NATURE

    Sri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai

Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama - 181

Normally we see Lord Mahavishnu in the templeswith four arms. But there are exceptions to provethe general.

The Lord in one of the many temples inKancheepuram gives darshan with eight arms. Heis therefore called “Ashtabhuja” in Sanskrit. Heholds the mighty disc –called Sudarshana, an arrow, the sword called Nandaka, and the Abhayamudrain the four right arms.

Abhayamudra refers to the way one holds his palm

spread with all the five fingers pointing upwards. It is frequently used by those regulating trafficto indicate the sense “Stop!”. It thus coveys theinstruction “Stop fearing and worrying”.

As the palm of the Lord resembles the wide beautifulpetals of a big well blossomed red lotus the palmin Abhayamudra is also described by somefiguratively just by the term “lotus”.

He holds the conch called Panchajanya, the bowknown as “Sarnga”, the shield, the mace – the“gada” known by the name” Koumodakee “in Hisfour left arms.

Thirumangai Azhwar has sung this Lord by a setof ten sweet Tamil verses starting with the term“Tiripuram Moonru”.

He describes the eight weapons carried by theLord in the third verse there. He lists them as(1.) Arrow (2.)Bow (3.)Mace (4.)Conch (5.)Sword(6.)Disc (7.) Shield and (8.) lotus.

I am giving a “feel-free” version of his verse in Sanskritfor the benefit of those of us who cannot read

    the original in Tamil.

     “Ào z “ÁbN ƒY| uà uÀs∫∆∫ Ê Ã√Æ zo∫ z oÚå Ï:

    ∆ò≥ÁÁuú TtÁ osÁDuÃ∫uoßÁ: YN¿ Ê §“oΩ QzbN ™Ω@≈¬ÁUÆÊ úÏ…úu™uo üTwÿ ßTƒåΩ@ tãoyã¸tãoÊ “∫åΩ  N Ànƒ Ê TÁjo™Á zD©§Ït Áß@ ƒt “z? åヅb§Á¤Á¬Æ:Tradition has it that Sri Nadadoor Ammal (1165AD-1275AD) grandson of Sri Nadadoor Azhwan livedin the Sannidhi Street of Ashtabhuja.

Sri Nadadoor Azhwan was the son of KamalaAmmal, younger sister of Sri Ramanuja (1017 AD-1137 AD).

Many of the readers may also be aware of thefact that Sri Nadadoor Ammal was also the grandpreceptor of Swamy Vedanta Desika (1268AD-1368AD).

There is a sloka on the lord Ashtabhuja as herushed to protect the elephant from the crocodile.According to some scholars it is from Sri NadadoorAmmal’s pen, though the sloka is referred to asa purana sloka by Swamy Desika in SachharitraRaksha. According to them, purana just means

    old.The sloka runs thus

     T¿Á“T¿Àoz u˚úzã¸z ªtuo Ã∫ßÃÊ oÁflÆ|™Áªÿ áÁƒåΩ  √ÆÁV Óm|å Ω ™Á¡Æ-ßÓÁƒÃåúu∫N ∫Áz ™zVT©ßy∫VÁz:@EÁu§ß¿ÁmÁz ∫sÁWTÊ ∆∫™uÙßÆÊ ∆òYÁúÁ{ ÃQzbÁ{ “Ào{: N Á{™Á zutN y™õƃoÏ “u∫∫ÃÁƒÊ“ÃÁ Ê ÃÊ“o zåz: @@The sloka mentions Abhayamudra as Abhayamin the term  zÉUqÉÍxÉqÉpÉrÉqÉ ç   in the place of lotusmentioned as zsÉÉbrÉÇ mÉÑwmÉÇ  in the Sanskrit versionby me of the verse in Tamil by Thirumangai Azhwargiven above.

I have also explained how there is no contradictionbetween the terms Abhayam i.e. Abhayamudraof the palm of the Lord and lotus.

I have given the Sanskrit version from which onecan easily see that the verse of Thirumangai Azhwaris in the form of a conversation betweenThirumangai Azhwar and Lord Ashtabhuaja.

Thirumangai Azhwar entered into a fantasy as hehad the Darshan of the handsome Ashtabhuaja.

Thirumangai Azhwar became a beautiful dame. There stood before him –no- her. Ashtabhuja the

handsome lad.Seeing Him standing with eight hands all carryingweapons as listed, the dame –let us name herParakala Nayakee –asks Him “Who are you?”.The lad answers “I am from the abode of Ashtabhuja”.

The answer is not straight. The lord does not say“I am Ashtabhuja.” Instead He says “I am fromthe abode of Ashtabhuja”.

He is not lying. For, even Ashtabhuja is from theabode of Ashtabhuja only.

      Madhura Vijayam - 54

Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai English Translation : CSL Narasimhan

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part – II

Story so far: The story based on the 14 th  century incidents,

was written by Sri Venugopalan which is based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha and Dutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved by four Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim invaders. After several adventures the two boys, with the help of Chenchu tribes found the idol along with one Kodava who protected the idol for more than eighteen years deep inside the forest of Chandragiri. Lord Ranganatha was brought to Tirumala and King Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler of that place patronized the upkeep of the idol with daily pujas. Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief of the Vijayanagara’s mulvoy province reaches Tirumala

in search of Lord Ranganatha and he promises Vallabha help of Vijayanagara to restore Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam which enabled Vallabha break his fast unto death. Vallabha and Datta turned to Kancheepuram on their way back, ensured safety of Manjari with her neighbors after the death of Singazhagar who was the key energy behind the expedition and left the town with disguised Vaishnavas as the fort doors were closed as a defense to an impending attack by Vijayanagar army. The disguised Vaishnava leader was no other than Camphor merchant who revealed that he was the head of Intelligence army of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the Vijayanagar men managed to kill all their pursuers and escaped to the foothills of the mountain on which Sambuvaraya’s fort exists where at the behest of

Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta enter the Rajagambhira fort as Gem merchants to rescue Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace while selling gems to the queen. Datta wanted to abort the mission and go while Vallabha stays firm. After some mutual arguments the parting friends unite again to the mission and get trapped in the palace attempting to meet the princess.Meanwhile at Vijayanagara Bukkaraya moved by the events has convened a high level meeting with his son Kampana Raya, Gopanna, Salva Mangu and other subjects to discuss the course of action on conquests to south and have decided to taken on Madhurai Sultan in spite of Bhamanis power always threatening them across Tungabhadra. As a first step Kancheepuram was

conquered and Kampana Raya’s army is now advancing towards Rajagambhira mountain. Vallabha and Datta have been who got trapped in one side of the fort got rescued by princess Madhurangini and her aides. Mean while the Vijayanagar forces have reached the fort of Sambuvarayas and have started attacking the fort.Vallabha and the captive princess watch this from a vantage point in the palace. Read further….

The fort of Raja Gambeera mountain in North Arcotdistrict was a part of the present Javvadhu Mountains. The fort and the city at its foothill was known asPadai Veedu in those days. The present day Padai

Veedu (which is also known as padavedu) is little

far from the olden padaiveedu. The old padaiveeduis dilapidated and has become a forest now. TheVijayanagar kingdom first attacked the Padaiveeducity. The Chief of the fort surrendered very soon. When went inside the fort, they realized thatSambuvaraya family are already inside the Rajagambeera fort. Next the army surrounded theRajagambhira fort. Since the fort was on top of thehill it was well protected. Whenever a war emergesthe Sambuvarayas safely gets into the fort. The fortcannot be captured easily as it was on top of thecliffy mountain. The commander-in-chief Gopanna and

Kandarakuli Maraiyya Nayakar both were thinkingof how to get into the fort. They identified few spotsand started attacking with heavy tools to hammerthe fort walls down. At the same time, on the otherside they were arranging sand bags secretly so thatthe soldiers can get into the fort. The battle tookplace the entire day between the two armies. The next day the battle started again. Within a fewhours of the day, The Vijayanagara army could climbmost of the fort area. The sambuvaraya army gotafraid after seeing this. The soldiers ran here andthere to protect themselves. The doors of the fortwere shattered by the Vijayanagara army.

Vallabha being in his place asked, ”Princess! Whathas happened?”“The fort door has been broken! “Hail! Long live Vijayanagara Kingdom “Vallabha shoutedwith joy. Then he asked ,”Has the army started cominginside?”“No not yet. They are trying. They are fighting withthe soldiers outside the entrance and they would soonbe defeated. “Vallbhan remained silent for sometime and askedagain, “oh Princess , What is happening now?”Sir!, Most of the enemy soldiers got killed . The ones

who are left are running for their lives. The Vijayanagarasoldiers are entering inside.Vallbhan again jumped with joy.The entire fort was getting destroyed. The King RajaNarayana sambuvarayar was very much in rage andwas shouting at his soldiers who were running, ”Ohsoldiers! Please join me to protect the fort”, sayingthis he gathered near the entrance of the fort.At the same time Kampana Raya and his army camethere and both the armies started fighting. Sambuvarayaridentified Kambannar and started attacking him.

Sir! Sir! Sambuvarayar is attacking the king alonewho came with Vijayanagara army. I feel I haveseen this king before. He looks very tall and brave. Wow! How he is swirling his sword and fighting.

The body is also not still . He is moving swiftlyhere and there! Now I understand whom he lookslike. He resembles our Camphor merchant. Toldthe princess with excitement.Oh Princess! What are you saying? Vallabha jumpedfrom his place and asked.Oh yes sir! He does resemble the Camphor merchant. He is now fighting forcefully. Sambhuvarayar’s crownhas fell down. Still he is continuously swirling hissword and he himself is fighting fiercely like a flyingkite. Oh !now…now… Sir! Sambuvarayar fell downshouted Madura.

Then immediately there were huge shouts of victoryand success everywhere.Oh Hail Kampanaraya ! Long live Kampana Raya!there was huge sound of army entering the fortshouting slogans like this .Vallabha was very muchanxious . What to do now? Should we wait till thearmy people to come and release us? Meanwhile,if somebody tries to hurt the Pandiyan princess?People can do anything when they are in rage ofloosing the battle.Princess! Princess! He shouted and called Madura. There was no response. He tried two three timesmore and since he did not get any response he

started having doubts. Immediately he took his swordand put his armour and came out of the room wherehe was before.Outside he saw a long corridor and was wonderingwhich way to go to find the princess room.He moved forward and saw the place was emptyand nobody around. After crossing two rooms he saw stairs. He quicklyclimbed the steps and reached the top floor. Whilehe was watching the rooms on the right side hesuddenly heard a lady’s moaning voice. He quicklyran on the left in the direction of the voice and reached

a hall. What he saw there gave him a shock. One soldier was dragging Madura after chaining herhands. He would have escaped from the fight nearthe entrance and would have come now as Vallabhansaw his body was hurt and he had blood stains. Hisface appeared that he belongs to a royal family. Ashe was dragging her she was resisting and whispering. That horrific scene made Vallabha angry, he immediately jumped in front of him and said, Sir! Leave the princess! The man got shocked seeing Vallabha and was veryangry.

“Who are you? Why did you come here?” hethreatened Vallabha. My mouth will not answer for you and only my swordwould reply said Vallabha laughing.

The soldier also removed his sword and both hadfight for some time. The soldier was tired as healready had been fighting near the fort and evenVallabhan was tired as he had not eaten anythingfor four days. Both were equally tired but still fought. After few minutes, Vallabhan struck the man’s chestand he fell down. He was moaning “amma! amma!which made Vallbha feel sympathetic for him. Seeinghim crying calling his mother, Vallabha felt pity onhim and took him on his lap and called him “soldier!Soldier!”“Tell my mom that I was remembering her only till

my last breath.“Who is your mom? Where is she staying?” I willdefinitely inform her.“She is in Paragur “replied the soldier.“What is her name?”“Krishnayee! Queen Krishnayee!”After hearing this Vallabha was so shocked as thoughhe touched the fire.“Oh Sir! What are you saying? Are you the son ofQueen Krishanyee?”“Yes”What is your name Sir,!My name is “Chinna Kulasekaran! My mother loves

me so much. Tell her I remembered her a lot”“Sir what is your father’s name?”My father who owned me up was Late King VeeraBhallala and my biological father was one warriorKulasekaran. The moment that word was uttered, Vallabha couldnot control his tears. He immediately hugged thebrave soldier with great force . Oh brother! Did I hurtmy own brother. What an injustice! What a cruelty?Did such a crime existed before on Earth . I am asinful person now. Having said this he started cryingloudly.

Readers who have already read the previous partsof Ranganatha Travels would know who the QueenKrishnayee was. She was Tuluva Queen. The Hoysalaking Veera Bhallala deva married her at his old ageso that his kingdom would expand upto Melaikadal(Mangalore coast). The couple did not have any issues.Rani Krishnayee was longing for a child . But thatwas not possible through Veera Bhallala. So Shehad to take a different route. Those days Thetuluvatribe ladies had an unique practice. That was knownas “Aliya Santhana Murai”. According to that practice

they can have a temporary husband for having ababy. They had those rights. That was not consideredsinful .This was one among the different practicesfollowed by different people. Based on this practice,

Rani Krishnayee acquired Kulasekaran as her husbandtemporarily. (Kulasekaran was the hero of the firsttwo parts of Ranganatha travels). A male baby wasgifted for her through him. She named the boy hisfather’s name itself. The soldier who had fallen infront of Vallabha is the same boy and is the brotherof Vallabha. Vallabha hugged and cried a lot realizingthat they both were kids of the same father. Thesoldier did not understand anything and was surprisedby Vallabha’s reactions. When Vallabha explainedhim everything even he could not control his emotions. Then Vallabha slowly took to a stone slab and said,”Sir! I used to always think that I do not have a

brother. Now I have found you. But before even Ifeel happy that I found you, I am going to lose you.I did not know that you belong to sambuvaraya’sarmy. Alas! I couldn’t find your identity before itself. The soldier started speaking consoling Vallabha.“Dear brother! After our family lost the country, Ithought I would join Sambuvaraya army and fightagainst Sultan to recapture our country. Vallabhanow looked at him affectionately and said, “Dearbrother! You did not do the correct thing by believingSambuvaryas. They were always slaves of Madurai

Sultan. And they won’t leave this practice in futurealso. Now What you dreamt is being achieved byVijayanagara kingdom .Chinna Kulasekaran wavedhis hands as sign of agreement of whatever Vallabha

said . That was also looking as though blessinghis brother for accomplishment. After that he closedhis eyes permanently. Vallabha whispered Dvayamantra on his brother’s ears and was weepingcontinuously. The Princess, who was watching all these camenearer to Vallabha and said, “Sir! Both of you foughtwith each other unknowing the fact you are brothers”Vallabha did not even looked up at her. He wascontinuously crying. He then started talking to himself saying, “ I really feeldepressed now. We all need a King to protect our familiesbut at the same time we are losing our family to protect

them.”Meanwhile, there were noises on the streets .Therewere also noises inside the fort. The Vijayanagaraarmy men must have entered the fort and was alsoheading towards the hilltop palace where these peoplewere. Dutta was in front of those soldiers. They wereall shocked to see Vallabha there. Dutta rushed toVallabha and hugged him with joy. At the same timeVallabha also told his Ill luck of losing his brotherto Dutta. Dutta who was also in grief tried to consoleVallabha. (to be continued)

The message of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and thetheme of World Culture Festival had definitely struck achord in the hearts of millions of people across theworld as recognised by the endorsement of world

leaders and the media world over, said Dr M VSoundararajan, Convenor of Temples ProtectionMovement. Speaking about the recently held WorldCultural Festival by Art of Living Guru Sri SriRavishankar, he said that as acknowledged by thePrime Minister and his ministerial colleagues alongwith CMs of various States; That we owe a sense ofgratitude to Guruji Sri Sri Ravishankar for choosing tohave this event in our country’s capital city as it hasenhanced the prestige of our country and re-emphasised the core message of ‘VasudhaivaKutumbakam’ which originated in this great land ofours as a path for peace in this world through theemphasis on Unity in Diversity.

He also said that since the event is over it is time todemonstrate that we are not small minded enough topunish Guruji Sri Sri Ravishankar and his Foundationfor this noble act of conducting the festival. Past track record for environmental protection of SriSri Guruji and Art of Living Foundation through theirwork spanning several decades including efforts takenin the past to clean river Yamuna.3. A people’s initiative to restore a river’s gloryNGOs from four districts in western Tamil Nadu

come together to rejuvenate the Noyyal

This joint effort is unique and special. Unique ashundreds of volunteers, businesses, educationalinstitutions, and non-governmental organisations fromfour districts in western Tamil Nadu have cometogether, special because it is to restore a river.

The Noyyal River Restoration Federation, whichincludes Siruthuli in Coimbatore, Jeeva Nadhi Noyyalin Tirupur, Olirum Erodu in Erode and Noyyal Kaappomin Karur, will launch here on March 26, ‘Noyyalai Nokki’(Towards Noyyal), a people’s initiative to restore theNoyyal river system, jointly with the government. Socialactivist Anna Hazare wil l launch the project atKooduthurai in Alandurai in Coimbatore district. The river originates in the Western Ghats and runsthrough the four districts to join the Cauvery at Noyyalvillage. As many as 34 streams feed water into it andthe river system includes 21 anaicuts and 31 tanks.Although the river is commonly known as a junglestream, in the 1940s it carried water throughout the

year and would flood twice or thrice a year, recollects81-year-old Su. Ra. Thangavel, former president ofSulur town panchayat. Now, just four or five streams that originate in theWestern Ghats feed the river, says C.R. Swaminathan, chairman, Noyyal River Restoration Federation. Inmany places, the river is encroached upon, sewage islet into it, or the river needs to be desilted. What wasonce a 60-foot to 300-foot wide water body is now dryin many locations or has just a sewage stream.Yet, for many like Mr. Thangavelu, there are cherishedmemories of the river. He recalls how, when he was inhis teens, he would go regularly to the Sulur tank inCoimbatore for a bath. Women too would go to thetank in the evenings to bring home drinking water froma well nearby. Sulur tank is one of the 31 tanks that ispart of the Noyyal river system. The river is all set to regain its glory with the ‘NoyyalaiNokki’ initiative. “We need to survey the streams andthe river, remove the encroachments, create alternativechannels to carry the water, desilt, and strengthen thebunds along the river,” says Vanitha Mohan, ManagingTrustee, Siruthuli. Sewage treatment plants need tobe installed and people should be involved at thevillage level to restore the river and sustain it, she says. What is encouraging is the willingness of the public tobe part of it. Members of Siruthuli have been going to

villages for the last 10 days to create awareness. “Ifpeople see the river cleaned up and start using it, theinitiative will become sustainable,” she says.“We need the support of the Central and Stategovernments too,” adds Mr. Swaminathan. The PublicWorks Department had prepared a project four yearsago to restore the river and to set up sewage treatmentplants. The project cost then was estimated at Rs.650 crore. However, only after completing a survey, in about sixmonths, can the project cost be finalised, they say. It isproposed to divide the river into segments of 500

Court issues summons to officials overpollution of lakes in Bengaluru

In a first, the top brass of the Bangalore Water Supply

and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), often in the dock for let-ting sewage into the city’s lakes, is being held account-able. A city court has found prima facie case against itunder the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act,1974.The incumbent BWSSB Chairman, T.M. Vijaya Bhaskar, two former chairmen, Anjum Parvez and Ravishankar, and 10 engineering staff, will face legal proceedings forletting sewage into the Hulimavu, Madiwala and Arakerelakes. If found guilty, they may face a prison term. The V Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM)Court, hearing a private complaint filed by the KarnatakaState Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), ordered the reg-istration of the case, and issued summons. man and other heads were supposed to file their replyon March 22. However, the agency has sought more time. The case has been adjourned to June. The KSPCB filed the case in 2015, following a complaintby Wing Commander (retd.) G.B. Atri, who is leading awatchdog committee of the three lakes, formed by the

KSPCB in partnership with local residents. “It is criminalof BWSSB, which is duty-bound to protect the lakes, to bethe biggest polluter. Ironically, BWSSB chairman is alsoan ex-officio member of KSPCB,” said the retired WingCommander.KSPCB had issued several notices, asking the BWSSBto stop letting sewage into these lakes, in 2014, copiesof which are available with The Hindu . When all elsefailed, KSPCB went ahead with the criminal suit, said asenior official.Even as Mr. Lakshman, chairman, KSPCB, said the Boardwould aggressively pursue the case to hold the top brassof BWSSB accountable for the first time, Mr. Vijay Bhaskarsaid the setting up of sewage treatment plants (STP)was a larger systemic issue that needed government

investment. “We will defend the agency in the courtthrough legal means,” he said. However, it’s not just the lack of STPs that has ruined thethree lakes. An STP on the bed of Madiwala lake hasbecome dysfunctional. “BWSSB has now handed overthe dysfunctional STP to the Lake Development Authority(LDA). The drainage line of the BWSSB in the area isleaking, letting the sewage in the lake seep in throughthe wetlands,” Mr. Atri said. (The Hindu 26.3.2016)

LAKESHundreds of lakes were created by the Kakatiya rulers in the dry Deccan Plateau. The lakes are magnificentexamples of irrigation from the 11th century AD. Hundreds of such lakes exist and are in use even today. The lakes were constructed under the 'Dashabanda cheruvu' system, where the farmers contributed atenth of their incomes for the construction of the lakes. A lake was created and adjacent to the lake abeautiful temple was built. A small town like Nirmal in Adilabad district has 24 lakes and tanks. Hyderabadand its surroundings had at least 50 lakes. Most of them had been encroached upon.
