VALENCIA LAKES
By Cassandra Leopold
Fall kicked off to an amazing start as the 3rd Annual Music and Arts festival took place inside of the Social Hall this year. Th e event drew in over 50 artists and crafters and the residents were thrilled with the variety of talent. Th is year’s Halloween Party was themed Haunted Halloween where you could walk the bloody red carpet and dance with dead Hollywood Stars. Creative displays were scattered about. Costumes, ranging from Cleopatra to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane’s sister, Blanche, were very amusing and creative this year.
Party revelers danced to popular songs spun by Party 101 Productions DJ and the food was catered by our very own Bistro. Th anksgiving quickly approached us and on Black Friday we had over 30 residents join us for our annual Turkey Trot. Th e very next weekend, the lifestyle team hosted the resident favorite Holiday Cocktail Parties. Due to the high demand in ticket sales, we hosted two parties this season. Friday night was enjoyed by all as the Valencia Singers put on a spectacular show in which all arose at the end of the performance to give a highly warranted standing ovation. Saturday was just as much fun as the residents danced and jingled during the live performance by Th e Tropics. Th e social hall was turned over quickly to prepare for the next weekend’s Holiday Bingo nights. With almost 200 in attendance
each night, the residents were thrilled to take home cash gift cards on Friday night and gifts as prizes on Saturday night. The big winner for Friday
night’s $250 grand prize was Vincent DiFabio and on Saturday night the big winner was Marie Chandler, who took home a travel pack valued at $750. We would like to thank all of the residents for supporting all of these wonderful events and for all of those who put in time and eff ort
to help make them successful.

Event & Program HighlightsVALENCIA LAKES BRIDGE CLUB
Over 40 members and several non-members enjoy playing bridge
at Valencia Lakes. Some players learned to play within the last
two years by taking classes off ered through the Life Long Learning
Center at Valencia Lakes. Some players haven’t played in years
and are renewing their skills since moving here. Others have been
playing continuously for years.
Meeting the needs of such a diverse group of bridge players can be
a challenge. Th e Valencia Lakes Bridge Club conducted mini clinics
for Wednesday afternoon bridge players this fall to help bridge the
gap (pun intended). Topics ranged from “Basic Bidding Instructions”
to “Weak Two Openings.” Th e information was a review for some
players while providing additional insight for others. Instructors
were Alex Iswarienko, Mick Campbell, Mike Morse, Rick Wilds,
and Fred Sutterlin.
Newcomers sometimes ask if we play “fun bridge.” Our response
if that we always have fun playing bridge, no matter the level of
play. More experienced players off er support and guidance to new
players, and there is always a great deal of camaraderie. Bridge is
also a great way to keep your mind sharp. Contact Martha Kilbourn
at 813.938.473 or [email protected] for more information.
HISTORY OF BOCCE BALLTh rowing balls toward a target is the oldest game known to
mankind. It dates back to 5000 BC when the Egyptians played with
rocks. Th en the Greeks picked it up around 800 BC. But, it was the
early Romans who were among the fi rst to play Bocce as we here
at Valencia Lakes know it today and it rapidly spread throughout
Europe. Th e early participants of Bocce noticed that the game’s
athleticism and spirit of competition rejuvenates the body and the
mind. Th e Europeans took their Bocce very seriously—the English
once said, “we will fi rst fi nish the Bocce game and THEN we will
defend the country from the Spanish Army. Th e fi rst organized
Bocce games where formed in Italy in 1947. Bocce was brought to
the United States in the early 1900s by Italian immigrants and
has fl ourished here ever since. Now it’s a big part of the Valencia
Lakes community, too! Come join the fun at the courts where there
are many regular players—sometimes up to 65!! See your Valencia
Lakes bulletin for days and times.

VALENCIA LAKES WOMEN’S CLUBBy Patty Hibsher
Th is past quarter has been very active for our Women’s Club. In
October we held a Tea Party to raise funds for our annual scholarship
donations. Our members donated scrumptious tea sandwiches and
pastries and several of their spouses were our servers. Each hostess
had a beautifully decorated table. We raised $1800.00 towards 2014
scholarships.
In November we held our annual “Dance” and “Walk for the
Cure”. We raised $10,000.00 for Moffi tt Cancer Research Center.
In December we decorated our “Angel Tree” to donate holiday
gifts for needy children. And of course, we had our annual holiday
luncheon deliciously catered by Chef Chris and our bistro. Th is year
our Valencia singers treated us to a special “Flash Mob”.
Th ank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, members and our
entire community for your continued support. We look forward to
another successful year for all of you and our “Women’s Club.”

BIG SHOW — THE EDWARDS TWINSLike many theatrical young men born in the 1960s, Anthony and

of those other young men, the Burbank-born Edwards brothers were
encouraged to become professional entertainers by one of their
beloved TV divas: Carol Burnett urged them to fuse their musical
abilities to create “Celebrities on Stage,” the celebrity-impersonation
extravaganza. Th e Edwards Twins have been touring around the
country for the past decade. (Th e Burnett story in a nutshell: She
fi rst saw Anthony Edwards impersonate her in a show in Toronto,
then she hired Eddie Edwards to impersonate Bette Midler in one of
her own shows, and now all three are chums.)
